District Soccer Tournament in Kirchhain

Archive, News

Steinmühle has two teams on the field

Competition Class II Boys (born 2001–2003)
At this year’s district finals for “Youth Trains for the Olympics,” our team faced the Georg-Büchner-Schule in Stadtallendorf and the Lahntalschule in Biedenkopf in Competition Class II.
In the first game against the Georg-Büchner-Schule, the Steinmühle team got into the game quite quickly and dominated the match from start to finish thanks to their high work rate and aggressive pressing of their opponents. Their offensive style of play logically led to a 1–0 lead midway through the first half. As the game progressed, the team created a number of excellent scoring opportunities, but failed to capitalize on any of them. It wasn’t until shortly before the end that the well-deserved and decisive second goal was scored.
In the second game against the Lahntalschule, the tournament’s outcome meant this match effectively became the final for the district championship. Taking an early lead in the second minute gave our team added confidence, and their dominance on the field was evident in numerous impressive offensive plays. The resulting 3-0 lead made the team look like the sure winner, and in the final 10 minutes, the reserve players also got their chance to play. The resulting tactical adjustment and minor lapses in concentration led to two unnecessary goals against, forcing the team to nervously hold on for the win in the closing moments. In the end, however, they secured a well-deserved 3:2 victory.
Our WK II team has thus once again confidently qualified for the regional finals in Marburg on April 20.

Competition Class III Boys (born 2003–2005)
Our soccer players from grades 7 and 8 faced off against the teams from Lahntalschule Biedenkopf and Alfred-Wegner-Schule Kirchhain.
The team, led by D. Konnertz, played well in both matches but suffered two narrow, unfortunate losses. However, the team can look forward to next year’s games with optimism, especially since not all of their key players were able to participate in Kirchhain.

Math That Will Amaze You

Mathematics Evening with Prof. Beutelspacher

On March 7, 2017, the first Math Night took place at Steinmühle and was unexpectedly well-attended. Professor Beutelspacher from the Mathematikum in Giessen presented mathematical experiments, and the math student council, together with many students, had organized a varied program of activities.

The evening also provided a fitting occasion to honor the successful participants from Steinmühle at the Hessian Math Olympiad.

In his one-hour lecture on mathematical experiments, Prof. Beutelspacher amazed the audience with simple experiments involving geometric figures and solids, astonished them with calculation tricks, and inspired them to think through hands-on activities with scissors and paper. His entertaining explanations of the development of various number systems also highlighted the importance of mathematics for human progress. The audience was captivated and fascinated by a side of mathematics that is sometimes neglected in school.

The supporting program featured a wealth of hands-on activities, most of which were developed in class or designed specifically for this evening. The WU Computer Science Department presented “LEGO Mindstorms” they had programmed themselves; the famous chessboard legend and the legend of Achilles and the tortoise were explained; and the goat problem was examined in even greater detail. Visitors could test their math skills in an extensive quiz, crack secret codes using a computer program, marvel at geometric solids and build them themselves, try their hand at various math puzzles, solve logic problems, or try out the calculation tricks already demonstrated on stage and learn new ones. On display boards, students presented work from their “regular” classes; for example, visitors could admire beautifully designed cubes, marvel at the mathematics of honeycombs, or examine impossible solids.

The Friends of the School Association also organized a raffle featuring numerous attractive prizes related to mathematics, which were drawn on stage at the end of the event. The WU Catering Service provided refreshments for the guests, so many visitors lingered in the Steinmühle Forum for a long time, enjoying lively conversations and a great atmosphere.

Once again this year, students from Steinmühle were successful in the state-wide math competitions

Archive, News

Whether it’s the Math Olympiad, the Pangea Competition, or the Kangaroo Competition—students from our school have been participating in them quite successfully for years. Not all of this school year’s competitions have been evaluated yet, but Steinmühle has already seen its first encouraging results in the State of Hesse Math Olympiad.

As part of the Math Night with Professor Beutelspacher, Ms. Oestreicher-Gold and Ms. Faß honored the successful participants in the Math Olympiad.

Annabell Bork and Nela Haeberle (both in Class 5c) participated in this competition for the first time and achieved outstanding results. Among the 27 top students in the 5th grade statewide, Nela even took first place.

Jan Audretsch (7th grade) competed in the finals for the second time and placed 4th this time. At the same time, he was accepted into the “Youth Trains in Mathematics” support program run by the “Education and Talent” Foundation.

The top young talents gathered at the Technical University (TU) of Darmstadt on the last weekend of February for the final round of the 56th Hesse Mathematics Olympiad (MOH). Students in grades 5–12 demonstrated their skills in logical thinking, their ability to reason and concentrate, and their creative approach to numbers, formulas, and unusual mathematical problems under exam conditions.

2016 Reading Aloud Contest

Archive, News

The three class winners, Paula Auschill (6a), Ellen Hilt (6b), and Emilia Ouaissa (6c) demonstrated their reading talent on December 8, 2016, during the Steinmühle school competition in front of their classmates by reading a passage from a book of their own choosing and then a text they hadn’t seen before. Paula Auschill emerged as the winner. This was determined by a jury consisting of students and teachers.

With that, Paula had qualified for the next round. At the city-level competition, held in the conference room of the Marburg Building Authority, she put on a good performance but was narrowly defeated.

School Ski Course in Mayrhofen

Archive, News

This January, Steinmühle once again took part in the eighth-grade school ski trip to the Gschösswandhaus in Mayrhofen in the Zillertal. The group included 69 eighth-graders and 10 chaperones.

At the Gschösswandhaus, the students were greeted by the very friendly Mitterer family, who ran the inn, along with delicious food and rooms with 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, and even 15 beds. Living together in these rooms can sometimes be a social challenge for the students, but thanks to the generally positive atmosphere at the lodge, there were hardly any serious conflicts.

In ability groups of 6–10 students, they spent about 2 hours on the slopes in the morning and up to three hours in the afternoon. Naturally, the beginners made the most progress, and many of them were able to tackle their first blue run by the end of the second day of skiing. The students who already had skiing experience were able to improve their technique and explore the expansive ski area. Theoretical instruction was also a key part of the program: adhering to international slope rules, adjusting one’s skiing style to external conditions, and learning about alpine hazards are all integral components of the school ski course.

To mark the 35th visit by a Steinmühlen group to the Gschößwandhaus, the Steinmühlenweg—a trail connecting the ski slope to the lodge — a new sign, which was ceremoniously unveiled on the evening of the last day and will hopefully continue to guide many more generations of Steinmühlen students to the hut.

Double Gold: The equestrian team from the Steinmühle Riding and Sports Club Triumphs at the Youth Cup and Ring Tournament Finals

Archive, News

In late February 2017, the finals of the Youth Cup and Ring Tournaments took place at the Steinmühle. In the Youth Cup, all four team members from each club had to complete a dressage test and take a theory exam. In the Ring Tournament, in addition to dressage, the discipline of show jumping was included, in which riders competed on a short course. Under the guidance of coach Beate Schridde, the hosts came out on top.

Since late 2016, Ms. Schridde (Level A Competitive Sports Trainer) has officially been managing the Steinmühlen Riding Center. As a rider, she herself has successfully competed at the highest level in international tournaments (e.g., Festhallenturnier, Euroclassics Bremen). As a trainer, Schridde has also won many awards alongside her students (e.g., German Junior Eventing Championships, Hesse Eventing Championships).

Their services for riders and horses include riding lessons for beginners and advanced riders in dressage, show jumping, and cross-country riding; specialized training with your own horse; young horse training; horse conditioning; and personalized competition support.

With the appointment of Beate Schridde as operations manager, the Steinmühle Riding and Sports Club has gained a true equestrian professional and looks forward to continuing its excellent collaboration with her.

Mr. Georg Ritter was appointed managing director of the boarding school, effective March 1, 2017.

Archive, News

He holds a degree in public administration (FH), is married, and has two children. Most recently, he successfully managed an international guesthouse and conference center for youth and families in Upper Austria.

“Steinmühle 2.0—that is the goal I have set for myself for the coming years. Steinmühle, known for its pioneering approach to education, is set to achieve a similarly strong position in the area of boarding. This will require numerous measures. Over the next few years, we plan to modernize the furnishings in the boarding rooms, reactivate the tennis facilities, and completely renovate all boarding buildings from top to bottom. Furthermore, a stronger international focus and close collaboration with the Steinmühle School Association (Schulverein Steinmühle e.V.) are among the priorities I have made my own. To achieve these ambitious goals, I look forward to strong support—especially from the school administration, the school association, and the parents. Our shared goal must be to preserve Steinmühle’s uniqueness and guide it toward a bright future.”

We extend a warm welcome to Mr. Ritter and look forward to a successful collaboration.

A lively atmosphere among the 5th- and 6th-grade students celebrating Altweiberfastnacht

Archive, News

The opening polonaise and the beautifully choreographed dance performances quickly put all the students in a festive Carnival mood. The students were happy to comply with the costume requirement, and many teachers had also dressed up beyond recognition. The winners of the class costume contests—which Ms. Boebel used to organize a fun game—proudly presented their outfits.

In addition to dancing, the classes took part in other physical activities: the class relays, which were a lot of fun for both participants and spectators.

And to top it all off, there were the popular Carnival fries again.
