plus-MINT – Boarding School Program for Young STEM Talents

Particularly talented students with a passion for mathematics, computer science, natural sciences, or technology (MINT) will find a unique academic and personal environment at plus-MINT: They live and learn at select boarding schools alongside other young people who are enthusiastic about MINT subjects and receive targeted support tailored to their interests and abilities.

Who is eligible to apply for plus-MINT?

plus-MINT is funded through the Student BAföG program. Depending on the family’s income, up to 100% of the boarding school fees may be covered. This is intended to ensure that the program is also accessible to students whose families cannot fully cover the costs of boarding school on their own.

The program is designed for exceptionally talented and dedicated students who have already demonstrated a passion for STEM and would like to further develop it. For example, young people such as

who demonstrate exceptional achievement in mathematics, computer science, natural sciences, or technology,
who have already successfully participated in STEM competitions,
who are involved in STEM clubs, projects, or extracurricular activities,
or who engage intensively with STEM topics even outside of class.

Starting in which grade does the plus-MINT talent development program begin?

The plus-MINT program at Steinmühle is designed for young people from 10th grade through the Abitur. This unique educational track is developed in collaboration with strong partners, including research institutions and companies in mechanical engineering, computer science, and the natural sciences. In addition, students can even conduct their own research project at a university.

The Steinmühle is located in the immediate vicinity of the university and the Technical University of Central Hesse (THM), and not far from regional companies that are world-class in the fields of technology and the natural sciences—ranging from innovative startups to global market leaders in the fields of pharmaceuticals, medical technology, and mechanical engineering.

How do teachers provide support?

An entire team of teachers, coordinated by Dr. Jutta Töhl-Borsdorf, is on hand to guide interested teenagers and young adults through science-based projects and research questions.

In superbly equipped classrooms—which are currently undergoing further expansion—the teaching staff guides students in programs such as “Jugend forscht,” “Chemie mach mit,” and math competitions. Students at Steinmühle regularly qualify for state- or even national-level competitions and are frequently found in the final rounds.
