Pop Meets Chamber Music at the Winter Concert

Archive, News

Not everyone was able to get a seat. That’s how great the interest was in the Steinmühle Winter Concert. The guests at the Forum enjoyed an entertaining evening of music, singing, and dancing—and there was probably no one there who didn’t find something to their personal taste.

“We’re reaping the rewards of past years here”—no one could have put it better than Ulrike Wilmsmeyer, the event’s overall organizer. Daniel Sans, a fellow music teacher and concert tenor, nodded in agreement. The two of them co-hosted the evening.

Just looking at the list of titles gives a sense of the diversity of the performances. Modern chart hits like “Hot2Touch” by Felix Jaehn were performed through song and dance, as was Richard Strauss’s Opus 27 No. 4, which, in the midst of the gloomy season, offered the message “…and tomorrow the sun will shine again” — masterfully performed by Steinmühlen student and star violinist Bodam Lee, Gabrielle Sans (piano), and Daniel Sans (tenor).

The evening program featured Wind Ensemble Class 6, the WU Musical, the Swing & Sing Club, the Chamber Music Club, the Upper School Choir, and the Concert Band, which can be proud of the clear tones produced by its tuba player.

Basketball: Injury woes meant the team “only” finished in 4th place in the regional tournament

Archive, News

Despite the unfortunate injuries to two of its starting players (Finn Steinfeld and Hannes Schweitzer), the Steinmühle basketball team competed in Competition Class II at the regional finals of the “Youth Trains for the Olympics” competition.

Our team lost the first game against Ostschule Gießen by a wide margin, 17–30. The basketball players from Gießen gave our team a hard time, and unfortunately, our team couldn’t really get into the game. “Perhaps due in part to injuries, it took us a little longer to establish a rhythm and readjust,” Coach Marc Bepperling explained in his report.

In the second game against the team from Wetzlar, a win was now needed to qualify for the semifinals. In a very close, evenly matched game, the Steinmühlen team managed to hold on to their 18–17 lead until the final whistle.

Having finished second in our group, our team now had to face the winner of Group B in the semifinals. However, the very strong team from Lich proved unbeatable. Our team lost 8–41, with the high proportion of club players on the opposing team making a very clear difference in this match.

The result was a complete success nonetheless

Despite resting our regulars against Lich, Steinmühle was unfortunately unable to emerge victorious in the third-place match (against KFG Homburg).

It’s a real shame that we weren’t able to start the district tournament with our previously successful “starting five.” “Qualifying for the regional tournament and finishing in 4th place overall was still a complete success,” agreed school sports coordinator Michael Neirich.

Steinmühle wishes the two injured individuals a speedy and full recovery and thanks Noel and Luka for their spontaneous willingness to help.

The players: Luka Harmann, Noel Mati Shir, Paul Wolf, Jonas Neirich, Eric Behrens, Samuel Ruff, Sebastian Jung, Linus Ingenbleek.

The coaches: Gordian Bachmann, Marc Bepperling.

Celebrating Christmas with Music, Singing, and Poetry

Archive, News

With great enthusiasm, the 5th and 6th-grade classes organized their joint Christmas party in the Forum. Parents were also invited and watched the performances from their tables while enjoying coffee, cake, and cookies. The program featured music from the 5th-grade wind ensemble, choral singing by the 5th-grade class, as well as song and poetry recitations. The youngest Steinmühlen students were focused yet clearly enjoying themselves. Their performances demonstrated the value of good professional guidance. In addition to Ulrike Wilmsmeyer, Steinmühlen teachers Andreas Jamin (Grade 5 Wind Ensemble) and Daniel Sans (Grade 5 Choir) are actively involved in this program. It’s also not a bad idea, musically speaking, for Ulrike Wilmsmeyer to always lead by example and take to the piano herself. The Steinmühlen community would like to express its gratitude for this dedication—and also to the parents, whose contributions of drinks and pastries helped create a festive atmosphere throughout the afternoon.

Even though our Class 6b wasn’t selected from among the many applicants, we didn’t want to keep this great application video from you all. Thanks to all the students and to our homeroom teacher, Nicole Faß.

“Ohne Punkt und Komma” Writing Contest: Naomi Skibbe Won Again

Archive, News

She’s just that good! For the third time, Naomi Skibbe, a 10th-grade student in class 10b, won first prize in the statewide “Ohne Punkt und Komma” competition. This is a writing contest organized by the Hessian Ministry of Science and the Arts.

The Steinmühlen student’s winning streak began in 2014. At that time, she was among the top finishers with her story “Checkmate”; two years later, in 2016, she placed first again with her story “A Beautiful Lie.” This year, her entry was titled “Soap Bubble” and once again took first place.

To ensure that the jury evaluates the entries impartially, they are always submitted anonymously. Each year, the jury selects five first-place and five second-place winners—all of whom are ranked equally—for each age group (12–13-year-olds and 14–15-year-olds) statewide.

This year, the prize for the first-place winners consisted of a cash award of 350 euros. In addition, the 20 winning stories were published in a book, and each winner received four copies.

The awards ceremony, hosted by Minister of State Boris Rhein, took place in early December in the theater hall of the Künstlerhaus Mousonturm in Frankfurt am Main.

STONEWS – Interviews with Teachers and a Glimpse into the World

Archive, News

The Steinmühle is always happy to get “good press.” We were quite surprised when, a few months ago, our own students contributed to it: STONEWS was published—a new 16-page lower-grade newspaper in A4 format, created in the 5th-grade language workshop under the guidance of German and geography teacher Lisa Braun.

The team, consisting of Annabell Bork, Vivien Ettrich, Nela Haeberle, Felix May, Emma Schnabel, and Melina Wagner, conducted interviews with Steinmühlen teachers for the newspaper, addressed the topic of refugee policy, and developed a quiz to help people find out if they’re addicted to social media.

Second issue in the next half-year

According to teacher Lisa Braun, there will definitely be another issue of STONEWS in the coming semester. This time, 20 students—from the current 6th-grade classes and 5th-grade students—have already expressed interest in contributing. We wish them every success and are already looking forward to it. The photo shows the front page of the first issue. You can download the content using the link.

Quite active: Sports badges for 110 students

Archive, News

A total of 110 Steinmühle students earned the Sports Badge this year. Of these, 44 received the gold Sports Badge and 50 received the silver Sports Badge. Sixteen students received the bronze Sports Badge.
With these overall results, the school was able to nearly match the achievement from 2016, reports school sports coordinator Michael Neirich, adding: “Steinmühle is thus continuing its wonderful athletic tradition this year as well, enabling as many students as possible to earn the Sports Badge.” All the award recipients then posed together for our photographer in the gym.

Charity Event: On the Trail with Sherlock Holmes at the Steinmühlen Forum

Archive, News

The ultimate pleasure of the Marburg Hörtheatrale’s performances unfolds when you close your eyes. That’s when your own imagination takes over. This was also the case on Tuesday evening, when the Hörtheatrale ensemble performed in the school’s forum at the invitation of Steinmühle and the Friends of the School Association. The trio—consisting of Daniel Sempf, an actor employed at the Marburg Schauspielhaus, and his colleagues Franziska Knetsch and Stefan Gille—presented Arthur Conan Doyle’s mystery “The Speckled Band” in a blend of radio play and live theater.

The audience in the packed Forum followed the investigations of the legendary detective Sherlock Holmes, whose task, together with John Watson, was to solve the mysterious murder of a woman. But that wasn’t all. Her sister, Helen Stoner, was also already feeling threatened. Understandably so—especially when you had to endure the eerie and intimidating noises that could be heard all around her!

A substantial sum for the new construction fund

Although admission to the event was free thanks to support from the Steinmühlen Friends Association, the guests were happy to contribute to the evening’s costs. Designed as a benefit event to raise funds for the interior design of the new building currently under construction, the guests donated a truly impressive total amount—much to the delight of Melisande Lauginiger, who came up with the idea for the evening and organized it perfectly. The inspiration for the event came from the mystery novel project she is currently working on with 7th-grade students. This led to an additional highlight of the evening when Emilia Ouaissa, a student in class 7c, kicked off the event with a reading from her own mystery story. Since cultural enjoyment goes hand in hand with culinary delights, the tireless Steinmühle Catering Club, under the dedicated leadership of Fido Wagler, provided drinks and snacks both during the intermission and at the end of the evening.

Following the charity run at the Fall Festival and the concert given by concert tenor and Steinmühle teacher Daniel Sans, the performance by the Marburg Hörtheatrale at the Steinmühle was the third successful fundraising event to benefit the Neubau-Kasse.

WU Computer Science Competes in the First Lego League Competition in Fulda

Archive, News

Let’s keep our fingers crossed for the students in the elective computer science class taught by Steinmühle teacher Nicole Faß: This weekend, the eight boys will compete against 10 teams from other schools in Hesse in the regional round of the First Leo League (FLL) competition in Fulda. Steinmühle High School is the only participating school from the Marburg-Biedenkopf district.
The challenge for the young computer scientists was to work as a team to design a robot and program it to complete as many tasks as possible within two minutes on a specified course. In addition, the students had to present the results of a research project, which was also part of the competition’s requirements. Design and teamwork were evaluated separately.
The dedicated group, which adopted the self-chosen name “Steinbotics” in reference to the Steinmühle for the competition, has put a great deal of extra work into this project—and has been doing so since the very beginning of the school year.

Benefits from water-based activities

As newcomers to the FLL competitions, Nicole Faß and her team have set themselves the goal of familiarizing themselves with the rules and procedures in order to gradually develop the competitive routine that many other participants already have. Even so, as an observer at the dress rehearsal, one could already witness presentations that appeared very professional.
This year’s competition theme is “hydroynamic,” so it’s all about water. The students were therefore able to benefit greatly from the water-related projects they worked on in 8th grade. – A great example of how classroom content can also be useful for activities that take place outside of school.
The FLL competitions are open to participants across Europe.
