Sweeping leaves and selling stuffed animals to fight child slavery: You are our role models!

Bilingual Elementary School, News, Social Engagement

A big round of applause for our fourth-grade elementary school students: Because they wanted to do everything they could to help end child slavery in Ghana, the girls and boys showed incredible creativity. They raised nearly 1,300 euros to donate to the organization IJM.

During a class with their homeroom teachers, Katrin Weißenborn and Maria Gloerfeld, the children watched a film about slave labor in Ghana. The age-appropriate—yet nonetheless unvarnished—documentary made a deep impression on the students. While they themselves enjoy what is arguably the best possible education at the Steinmühle Bilingual Elementary School, they saw their peers in Africa toiling away. They realized: These children in Ghana have no opportunity to attend school—no education at all. Instead, they have to work hard.

There is more slavery than ever before

The Steinmühlen class decided: “We’re going to change the system.” Their plan was to help transform the existing system in Ghana. The organization International Justice Mission (IJM) proved to be a suitable partner in the fight against inhumane practices in Africa.

“There is more slavery today than ever before,” the two teachers reported.

Seeing the other children work so hard had a profound effect on the class at Steinmühle Bilingual Elementary School. So the children decided to try all sorts of ways to raise funds:

“I’ll give you my allowance”

“I do household chores and donate the money I get from my parents for them.”

“I’m donating the reward I get from my parents for getting a good grade.”

They played music in the city

And there’s more. The children used a vendor’s tray to sell gummy bears to their peers and donated the proceeds. They sold homemade cookies at the fall festival, sold their magazines, set up a donation box at the family festival, and sold their stuffed animals. The students donated the proceeds from returnable bottles, sold T-shirts, raked leaves, did chores for their grandparents, and sold handmade jewelry at the flea market. They played music in town and offered vegetables for sale to interested people. – A series of creative initiatives that made it clear: What they had witnessed had moved the children so deeply that they were eager to contribute financially, even if it meant making sacrifices of their own.

2,600 euros to fight an inhumane system

The teachers hadn’t expected that they would ultimately raise nearly 1,300 euros for the donation. Class teacher Katrin Weißenborn kept her promise to match the amount out of her own pocket—what a wonderful gesture!

All in all, it was a wonderful initiative that mobilized a lot of people to take a small step toward challenging a system that disregards human dignity. Thanks to everyone’s hard work and generosity, we raised 2,600 euros.

Steinmühle would like to thank all the children and their parents who championed this cause and supported their children in doing good. We would also like to thank the dedicated teachers Maria Gloerfeld and Katrin Weißenborn, who made an additional donation.

You are all the role models we need. And not just at Christmas!

Bringing a Sparkle to Children’s Eyes: Elementary School Participates in “Christmas in a Shoebox”

Bilingual Elementary School, News, Social Engagement

The Steinmühle Bilingual Elementary School, led by Julia Daube, participated with great enthusiasm in the Christmas gift box campaign for children in Eastern Europe. The campaign, also known as “Christmas in a Shoebox,” is organized locally by the Malteser Hilfsdienst in Marburg-Schröck.

Candy, stuffed animals, school supplies

Everyone should fill a shoebox with candy, as well as items like stuffed animals, art supplies, and school supplies, and wrap the box nicely. In this way, many packages—both large and small—from Steinmühle Elementary School set off on a long journey to ultimately surprise many children, whose families can barely afford gifts, under the Christmas tree. The Malteser organization coordinates the Christmas package campaign—from collection and transport to distribution to the children in orphanages, homes for people with disabilities, kindergartens, and schools—all carried out by volunteers.

Relaxed Craft Activities Together at the 6th-Grade Christmas Party

Events & Celebrations, News

The Christmas party for the 6th-grade classes at the Centrum was a picture of friendly togetherness. In a relaxed atmosphere, various activities—including crafts—took place across all classes throughout the afternoon, allowing both children and adults to enjoy a wonderful end to the year. “We’re delighted when parents see how relaxed and calm—yet focused—the children are as they spend time together here,” said Theresa Großer on behalf of the sixth-grade homeroom teachers. The Centrum also offers children plenty of space to stretch their legs in between social activities.

Between the Theater and the Ice Palace—a Field Trip for the 5th-Grade Classes

News, Steinmühle on the Road

Once again this year, during the run-up to Christmas, the 5th-grade classes went to the theater to see the play “Little Lord Fauntleroy.” Students from other schools were also at the theater, and many children were happy to see their friends from elementary school again. The performance that followed had the audience laughing and marveling, and it ended with thunderous applause.

Visible Progress on Skates

Afterward, the entire class marched in a “duck march” through Marburg’s Upper Town toward Georg-Gaßmann Stadium, where the ice rink is currently being set up. There, the children rented skates or quickly slipped into the ones they’d brought with them, and then spent the rest of the day among the food stands or on the ice. In addition to a few “pros,” there were many children who, although they fell over quite often at first, were able to make visible progress thanks to the skating aids. By the end of the day, almost everyone was skating very confidently and was thrilled with their newly acquired skill.

Fun with the Christmas ponies at the Steinmühle Riding School’s Advent Magic event

Life at Boarding School, News, Sports & Health, Steinmühle Riding School

There was a bustling atmosphere filled with Christmas spirit at the Steinmühle boarding school’s riding stable: Many children from Steinmühle and the surrounding area, along with their parents, accepted the invitation to this event at the riding facility, billed under the promising name “Advent Magic.” Not only were the bar tables and the snack stand attractively decorated—where guests could enjoy winter hot drinks and treats while taking in the “scent of horses”—but the ponies were also tastefully adorned as they moved about in the arena alongside the children.

Clearing the obstacle with momentum in hobby horsing

Getting to play at being a pony—that’s what the youngest kids got to do at Hobbyhorsing. The challenge there was to use their hobbyhorses and plenty of momentum to clear the obstacles that had been set up. Upstairs in the building, in the Reiterstübchen, the craft station awaited them. In this room, skilled hands and patient young minds created some truly amazing Christmas decorations. — Hats off to them!

Introducing Beate Schridde, the experienced riding stable manager

The Steinmühle School and Boarding School look back on a successful event marking the start of Beate Schridde’s tenure as the experienced riding stable manager. She introduced herself to guests of all ages, welcomed new faces, and greeted old acquaintances from her earlier time at Steinmühle. The equine manager and riding instructor, who holds an A-level trainer’s license, has ambitious plans. So if you’re interested in Steinmühle’s riding program, it’s worth staying tuned—even if this image doesn’t quite capture the spirit of the occasion. So let’s just say: get comfortable in the saddle. You can read more about who’s in charge of riding at Steinmühle here: https://reitschule.steinmuehle.de/

A Thank-You Poem for a Lovely Secret Santa Gift

Events & Celebrations, News

Some Secret Santa gifts can really touch your heart—that was certainly the case in Dr. Claudia Röder’s 5th grade C class. It wasn’t just a matter of accepting the gift and calling it a day—no! Lucia Albert wrote an entire poem to thank Santa Jakob Claar for her Secret Santa gift.

We think that’s a wonderful gesture! By the way, what the gift was remained a secret. It must have been something special—in whatever way!

Steinmühle Boarding School wishes everyone a Merry Christmas!

Events & Celebrations, Life at Boarding School, News

Along with the high school graduation celebrations, the Christmas party is the most important and wonderful celebration at our boarding school every year. As the year draws to a close, the students from grades 5 through 13 look back on the past year together with their parents. To kick things off, everyone gathers in the Forum to enjoy various performances.

Once again, the young people themselves presented plays, film segments, poetry slams, and musical performances. The two hosts skillfully guided the audience through the varied program, which offered the audience both a glimpse into the artistic and musical activities at the Steinmühle and a taste of our talents.

A great atmosphere throughout the evening

Later, during the exquisite multi-course meal in festively decorated rooms, the atmosphere remained very positive. The sumptuous meal was accompanied by lively conversation, and later that evening, the party got underway in the tea room, where everyone celebrated and danced together until late into the night.

A big thank you for the wonderful celebration goes to the educational team led by boarding school director Anke Muszynski, as well as to all the students and kitchen staff who contributed to the evening’s success. House Director Michel Hermens and Jan from the boarding school student group captured some photographic highlights for us:

An evening filled with music of an exceptionally high standard

News

Year after year, the winter concert at the Steinmühle Forum is a musical highlight in December. In a festive atmosphere, students from nearly every grade level showcase their impressive talents and put on a varied evening of entertainment that delights the audience.

Once again this year, it quickly became clear that all the performers were playing at an exceptionally high level. At the end of the event, Tobias Karlein, a member of the school administration team, explicitly highlighted this, thereby paying tribute to the young artists’ achievements.

The evening kicked off with Wind Instrument Class 5, conducted by Andreas Jamin, performing the well-known Christmas classic “Jingle Bells,” which got the audience in a lively mood for the evening. Next up were Juna Bamberger (Class 6) and Sophie Raven, who delivered an impressive performance of “Autobahn” by Benedikt Brydern.

A finely tuned interplay

Annica Bartsch (Class 12) once again provided a special highlight, performing Meghan Trainor’s “Like I’m Gonna Lose You” as a duet with Mio Bender on piano and thrilling the audience with their chemistry. Equally captivating was the performance by Mathilda Lambach (Class 13), who, accompanied by Elias Haas on the cello, performed Johann Sebastian Bach’s Violin Concerto in A minor, BWV 1041 (1st movement: Allegro moderato) and impressed the audience with their finely tuned harmony.

At the piano, Toshi Beato del Rosal (Class 12d) then impressed the audience with Shota Kageyama’s “An Unwavering Heart” and Go Ichinose’s “Midnight Theme,” demonstrating great expressiveness and technical mastery. Eleventh-grader Gojus Kanes presented another powerful piano piece: Edvard Grieg’s Lyric Piece, Op. 1, which came across particularly impressively in his performance.

A vibrant interpretation of the works

Sophie Menzler (Class 8b) then captivated the audience with her infectious enthusiasm, performing Vittorio Monti’s “Czardas” as a duet with Mio Bender and enthralling the audience with her lively interpretation. Mingzhou Yan (Class 13c) then captivated the audience with his piano performance of Frédéric Chopin’s Ballade in G minor, providing another musical highlight.

The grand finale was provided by the 6th-grade wind ensemble and the concert band, conducted by Stephan Reissig. Their joint performance brought the concert to a spectacular close and created a memorable ending.

Strong Community Involvement

Overall, the winter concert proved to be an impressive event in which, under the organizational direction of Ulrike Wilmsmeyer, instrumental music and vocal performances of the highest caliber carried the evening along, once again demonstrating the musical diversity and great dedication of the Steinmühle School and Boarding School community.

Punch, singing, and plenty of Christmas spirit

Events & Celebrations, International High School, News

We received the following report about the 5th-grade Christmas party from Ronja Heckmann, Dr. Claudia Röder, Laura Haller, and Leonie Zapf:

On the afternoon of December 8, the 5th-grade class from Steinmühle gathered with their parents at the Forum to enjoy a cozy celebration of the pre-Christmas season together. For the occasion, the wind ensemble class, led by Andreas Jamin, had rehearsed and performed three songs—everyone was thrilled at what the group was able to do after just seven rehearsals!

Choral Music and Piano Music

Afterward, the 5th-grade choir, conducted by Daniel Sans, performed several more songs. “Feliz Navidad” in particular inspired the parents in the audience to sing along and clap along, while Felix Tondorf accompanied the choir on the piano. The audience was then treated to another moving piano piece performed by Greta Bamberger.

Learning About Christmas Traditions

As the final item on the program, Class 5c presented “Christmas Around the World” by interviewing children from Romania, Armenia, Spain, and Colombia about the Christmas traditions in their countries.

The rest of the time was spent enjoying the children’s punch that was served, the Christmas treats everyone had brought, and relaxed conversations. While Christmas classics played in the background, children could also make stars and candy “moose” in the craft corner organized by the parents. The festive atmosphere was enhanced by the numerous Santa hats on everyone’s heads and the creative decorations on the tables, which the children had made in advance during art class.

All in all, it was a very pleasant afternoon that ended with “Fröhliche Weihnacht” and “Jingle Bells,” putting everyone in the right mood for the holiday season.

“Give a Hand—Take a Hand”: Advanced Art Class Donated Photo Project to Marburg Food Bank

Art, Music & Theater, Collaborations & Partnerships, News, Social Engagement

To mark the 25th anniversary of the Marburg Food Bank this year, the Steinmühle high school’s advanced art class created five large-format photographs for the Food Bank’s new facilities. The documentary photography project “Hände geben – Hände nehmen” was created with the collaboration of Cilia Evelbauer, Janice Houdek, and Nele Schultheis as part of Ines Vielhaben’s art class; Vielhaben made it possible for the photos to be mounted on Aludibond through her own donation. The works were recently presented to Bernd Holly, the former principal of Steinmühle. Since his retirement, he has been volunteering at the Marburg Food Bank.
