Steinmühle Without a Filter: Family Day at the Boarding School

Events & Celebrations, Former Students & Alumni, Life at Boarding School, News

Not “edited,” not altered by AI—but just as it is: That’s how the Steinmühle Boarding School presented itself at its annual Family Day.

During the tour, we went to the beach volleyball court on the Lahn and took a boat shuttle a few meters further to the boathouse. We toured the buildings, including the specialized classrooms for our science subjects, the gyms with a weight room, the tennis court, the soccer field, and the equestrian facility, where the horses had recently been given brand-new stalls.

First-hand Plus-MINT information

Teenagers from our plus-MINT team gave the young people—who had been selected by Steinmühle during the plus-MINT casting—a tour of the entire campus to provide information to them and their parents and answer any questions they had. We’d love to have you on the team! While the kids ran around the front sports field in transparent “bumper balls,” the boarding school’s teaching staff exchanged information with parents of interested students and conducted several admissions interviews.

Close to nature, yet centrally located

Parents and relatives of our prospective students, as well as the young people themselves, got a sense of our nature-oriented campus in southern Marburg, not far from the university and close to the lively atmosphere of the bustling city center and the traditional Upper Town with its historic half-timbered houses. Having all of this within easy reach is a very special bonus, in addition to our comprehensive academic program!

The weather was kind to us as organizers, and likewise to the families who gathered around the tables in our courtyard for a friendly get-together. They enjoyed food and cold drinks until, toward evening, the kitchen team served up delicious grilled treats.

Click through the photos—and get a feel for Steinmühle School & Boarding School!

We’re saying goodbye—and see you soon!

A Journey Through Time in a Rowing Boat: The Steinmühle from an Artistic Perspective

Art, Music & Theater, Former Students & Alumni, News

What was originally intended as a substitute for a written exam eventually developed into an impressive artistic expression: The students in the advanced art class in 13th grade were tasked with looking back on 76 years of Steinmühle’s history in their final project, artistically reflecting on the present, and at the same time designing a vision for the future. The result was to be a mural adorning the interior of the main building.

From Individual Figures to the Big Picture

“It’s truly amazing how the dynamic evolved from individually designed single figures toward a shared overall image of all five students,” says art teacher Ines Vielhaben, commenting on the creative process. It quickly became clear: All the figures should be sitting in a boat. To achieve this, the group decided to take on the challenge of creating life-size figures using the stencil art technique, which is well known from street art—particularly through Banksy.

Workshop in Giessen as preparation

In line with this, the class took part in a workshop led by Kai Krieger of 3 Steps at the HUETTE38 Art Hub in Giessen. Armed with their prepared stencils, the students used graffiti spray paint to spray-paint the rowboat and figures onto three strips of smooth wallpaper under expert guidance.

A work with multifaceted content

In terms of content, the work is multi-layered: The figure in the background, with its black face, symbolizes the fading memories of prominent members of the school community. The next figure refers to the successes in the important Steinmühlen “Jugend forscht” program—depicted by a bubbling laboratory experiment. The next figure, wearing the distinctive red one-piece uniform, represents the school’s current successes in rowing and its international victories, accompanied by the German flag as a symbol of the international context. Another figure, composed of pixels, embodies the future, shaped by digitalization and artificial intelligence. Finally, the coxswain looks ahead, pointing toward a hopeful future. His jersey features a combination of various versions of the Steinmühle’s past and present logos.

Display during Senior Year Theme Week

During the graduating class’s theme week, they managed to enlist the help of the facilities staff to install the mural. Together with the art class, the artwork was installed in the main building next to the cafeteria entrance. The event was accompanied by lively music and applause from fellow graduating seniors. Special thanks go to the students involved—Cilia Evelbauer, Janice Houdek, Raphael Richard Miller, Nele Schultheis, and Lina Zippel—as well as their art teacher, Ines Vielhaben, for the successful completion of this extraordinary project.

Steinmühle mourns the loss of Theo Nauheimer

Former Students & Alumni, News

From 1980 until his retirement in 2016, Theo Nauheimer taught art and physical education at Steinmühle, serving as the school’s physical education director for many of those years.

His goal was to bring together school sports, recreational sports, and league sports. As a result, Theo Nauheimer established numerous school sports teams that enjoyed great success both regionally and throughout Hesse—particularly in handball and badminton.

In later years, initiatives to participate in “Youth Trains” competitions were added, such as basketball or triathlon.

Through the swimming lessons in 5th grade and the school ski courses in 10th grade, Theo Nauheimer came into contact with nearly all of the students at Steinmühle over the course of decades, making him a defining figure in our school community.

In his second teaching subject, he is best remembered for his dedication to the art of photography. Through both required and elective courses, he turned the photo lab into a popular creative hub at Steinmühle. His students’ photographs adorned the hallways of all the school buildings.

On Friday, February 6, 2026, Theo Nauheimer passed away after a battle with cancer.

We would like to express our sincere thanks to him for his work and dedication.

Our thoughts are with his wife Carmen and his children Yvonne, Ingo, Lasse, and Till.

A Visit from a Successful Actor—or: A Look Behind the Scenes

Former Students & Alumni, Life at Boarding School, News

Sigmar Solbach is coming. A former student of the Steinmühle boarding school. Someone who became an actor, a TV series star, and a heartthrob. — What can you expect? A lot of self-importance, a lot of reminiscing about his own glory days, and, on the spot, a good dose of showmanship as he reads from his memoirs.

In the end, people were all the more surprised to realize: He wasn’t a show-off at all. Here was an authentic guest who self-critically looked back on his successful life, yet didn’t shy away from acknowledging dark moments and difficult times. On top of that, he conveyed what is essential for anyone who wants to be successful: overcoming obstacles, pushing past one’s limits, stepping outside one’s comfort zone—and always keeping one’s goal in sight.

Boarding school was his own choice

Sigmar Solbach enrolled in the upper school at Steinmühle Boarding School in 1963 because he wanted to do better in his studies. He did so of his own accord. His parents were separated, and his mother had a new partner. — From his perspective, this was not a foundation for a successful academic career.

The young man from the village of Rothemühle in South Westphalia already knew what he wanted to be when he arrived: an actor. The theater production at the Steinmühle got off to a flying start shortly thereafter. The driving force behind it all: Sigmar Solbach.

“A largely carefree time”

It turned out to be a largely cheerful look back—before, during, and after the reading. Several classmates from back then gathered at the Steinmühlenforum, and more than once someone would say, “Do you remember…?”—They looked at old photos and shared anecdotes. – That’s exactly how you’d imagine a class reunion after 60 years.

“It was a happy and mostly carefree time,” the actor recalls of his years at Steinmühle Boarding School.

Solbach was one of 500—and he played Faust

When Solbach had “a decent high school diploma” under his belt in 1966 and his dream of becoming an actor was still very much alive, his stepfather remained skeptical. “He was willing to support just one attempt at a drama school.” This narrow path and the enormous pressure of auditioning as one of 500 applicants at the Westfälische Schauspielschule in Bochum apparently unleashed every conceivable ounce of energy in Sigmar Solbach. He received the only acceptance—because he performed well in a role that no one had dared to take on before: Faust.

Respect for High Standards

Sigmar Solbach felt a sense of relief. He was able to put his career Plan B—becoming a goalkeeper on the national soccer team—aside.

Solbach’s acting solved some problems, but it also created new challenges. In the eyes of his stepfather, he went from being a “good-for-nothing” to someone who was slowly making something of himself.

What no one saw: The hardships on the way to the top, financial struggles, and the student dorm without a shower; the need to earn money temporarily as a cosmetics sales representative; the poor credit rating as a freelancer; the respect for one or another great director and the expectations that came with it. For example, “…in front of the great Fritz Umgelter”:

“First I was afraid of horses—then I rode like the devil”

He was told to get crowns on his healthy incisors because they were just a tiny bit crooked. And he had to learn to ride—that was the condition for the role he was being considered for. Against his better judgment, he went to the dentist; despite his fear of horses, he took riding lessons. “And you won’t believe it—neither did I—but in the end, I was riding like the devil.”

Hamlet as a Mark of Distinction

The recurring question he asked himself—“Will I be up to the task?”—was a recurring theme not only at the start of Solbach’s career. Later, when the man with a penchant for theatrical roles was appearing primarily in television series, Solbach defined his own personal challenges. After portraying Hamlet—”arguably the most difficult theater role”—he undertook three successful transatlantic crossings on a sailing yacht, which took their toll: little sleep, a great deal of skill, and complete concentration.

Proving himself, pushing himself to the limit, testing his boundaries, and seeing things through to the end—that’s what Sigmar Solbach stands for above all else. How insignificant, then, are the kissing and bedroom scenes from TV series for which—according to his wife’s standard response—“he was, in any case, well paid.”

No, he doesn’t take the characters he plays home with him, Solbach explained during a Q&A session following his reading. And he admits, “…that a successful career depends on many pieces of the puzzle.” He also says he’s been lucky. Judging by everything he’s said, however, that luck seems to have been rather limited. Actor Sigmar Solbach, known for his roles in the series “The Winter That Was a Summer” and “*Das Traumschiff*, “Das Erbe der Guldenburgs,” “Diese Drombuschs,” “Dr. Stefan Frank,” “Die Alpenklinik,” and others, visited his former school, the Steinmühle boarding school, thanks to his existing connection with Principal Björn Gemmer, and read from his autobiography “Mein Leben – ein Traum.”

“A cosmopolitan, cheerful community”: Steinmühle celebrated its fall festival

Events & Celebrations, Former Students & Alumni, Life at Boarding School, News

It wasn’t exactly a golden autumn day, but at least the weather held steady on the last Saturday in September, when Steinmühle celebrated its annual fall festival. The Steinmühle administration’s overall assessment of the event is positive: The festival brought people together who, in some cases, hadn’t seen each other in a long time—and alongside the fun, artistic, entertaining, and athletic presentations by the current classes, that was definitely the most important aspect of this “holiday.”

“The overall atmosphere was outstanding”

Principal Björn Gemmer: “It was a very peaceful celebration. The overall atmosphere that evening was outstanding. Graduating classes from 1975 to 2025 had fun together, sitting together in a convivial atmosphere, laughing and dancing. I met many parents with their adult children who were celebrating with each other or with friends. — The Steinmühle served as our common gathering place.”

“Another step toward mutual understanding”

Boarding School Director Anke Muszynski: “Our young people had a wonderful celebration. The goal of fostering a sense of community and growing through challenges is certainly still being fulfilled. Considering that the administrative merger of the boarding school and the school took place not too long ago, it was evident that, at least among the teaching staff, another step toward transparency and mutual understanding has been taken. I find that very heartening.”

Information About the Friends of the School Association

Steinmühle also uses the Fall Festival as an opportunity to share information about the school and boarding school. Members of the school administration are on hand to answer questions from visitors. At the same time, the Friends of Steinmühle, led by Chairwoman Jasmine Weidenbach, are available to anyone considering membership. What does the Friends Association fund, and where does it provide financial support? — The Autumn Festival provided the answers in person.

The same goes for the school parents’ council. There, Chairwoman Bianca Zenker and her team shared a bit of information with everyone.

The boarding school and the school shared responsibilities

Whether it’s interactions among alumni, activities organized by current classes, the presence of parents and siblings, the desire for information, or the extensive food and beverage offerings—with the impressive four-digit number of visitors, excellent organization is essential. This responsibility lies largely with the boarding school, but the school also played a significant role in many areas.

Amazing: Parents pitched in

Many people and countless helping hands volunteered their time to prepare for the fall festival. The parents also pitched in—a fact that cannot be praised highly enough, given the positive outcome.

Take another look at the beverage concept

There’s no denying that the organization can be challenging in some respects. However, that’s not because it’s fundamentally impossible to manage.
Dirk Konnertz: “The Fall Festival is an event where several generations come together to celebrate, including minors. “The food and beverage aspect needs to be well thought out,” says the managing director of Schule & Internat Steinmühle. He does not rule out the possibility that the concept may be adjusted slightly over the years to address this aspect.

This aspect should not be overlooked, but it is by no means the most important one: “The Steinmühle has shown itself to be a professional, cosmopolitan, and cheerful community, and we are delighted about that.”

Invitation to the traditional fall festival on Saturday, September 27, starting at 3 p.m.

Events & Celebrations, Former Students & Alumni, Life at Boarding School, News

For many, no distance is too far: Every year on the last Saturday in September, current and former students gather at Steinmühle for the Fall Festival to reminisce about their time together—over a drink or two and some delicious food. This day is also a family day—not only for our “Steinmühle community,” but also for anyone interested in learning more about our school and boarding school, while children can take part in the many hands-on activities on our campus. We therefore invite you to join us starting at 3:00 p.m. at Steinmühlenweg 21 in Marburg-Cappel, and we look forward to seeing you there!

A diverse group from Steinmühlen took part in the Marburg Night Marathon

Former Students & Alumni, Life at Boarding School, News, Sports & Health
With five teams and a total of 13 participants in the half marathon (nine) and marathon (four), Steinmühle took part in the Marburg Night Marathon. The school and boarding school traditionally participate in this well-established event, involving the entire Steinmühle community. Anyone who is interested and feels fit is welcome to join in.

Participants included students, teachers, parents, and support staff. – “All in all, a very diverse group,” reported Marcel Kalb, the school’s athletic director and organizer. – A heartfelt thank you to him and all the participants for their dedication to the night marathon, where having fun together is always more important than running performance.

A farewell for some, a new beginning for others at the summer staff party

Events & Celebrations, Former Students & Alumni, News

The end of the school year at Steinmühle is also the time to say goodbye to colleagues who are retiring. It is a traditional event, marked by a sense of reflection, but also by joy for the employees in question, who can now shape their lives beyond the daily school routine according to their own wishes. As is the case every year, the farewells took place as part of the joint summer party, to which Managing Director Dirk Konnertz invites all staff members from the school and boarding school on the last Thursday evening before summer break.

Decades of Work

When someone has been a teacher for several decades, their colleagues have so many memories of that person that it is impossible to do justice to their contributions here. With art teacher Dr. Sabine Kraft (25 years), physicist Dr. Rainer Nietzke (math and physics teacher, 33 years) and Almut Sersch, a German and religion teacher (36 years at Steinmühle), we bid farewell to long-serving teachers who not only left their mark but also shaped Steinmühle through their personalities.

Principal Björn Gemmer paid tribute to the work of Sabine Kraft, a certified architect and urban planner who holds a master’s degree in art history and a Ph.D. (Dr. phil.) earned in 2000. Publications, lectures, and teaching assignments characterized Sabine Kraft’s work until she left academia in 2001 to join Steinmühle, where she taught art with great dedication to students in all grade levels.

“You were always focused on the issue”

Rainer Nietzke began his teaching internship at Steinmühle in 1992 and later became the school’s data protection officer as well as chair of the physics and computer science student councils. “You were my mentor; I learned a lot from you,” recalled Principal Björn Gemmer, while also praising Rainer Nietzke for his clarity, his steadfast commitment to his values, and his competence, “which was always focused on the matter at hand, never on yourself.”

Almut Sersch studied Protestant theology and German language and literature, and completed her teaching internship at Steinmühle, where she earned an “excellent reputation among teachers and students” (Gemmer). Almut Sersch was known for her ability to handle conflicts at school; she worked as a school mentor, student council advisor, and works council member, and served as a mentor to numerous teachers in their pre-service training—”…and was always open to innovation,” according to the principal.

The three teachers also received recognition from Managing Director Dirk Konnertz—for their decades of dedication and for spearheading specific activities that are inextricably linked to each of them and will remain so. Special mention was also made of Tobias Leisge’s departure from the Bilingual Elementary School; he is seeking a career change, and his “calm demeanor and great patience” were always regarded as important and helpful. Speaking on behalf of the works council, Nicole Hohm expressed her gratitude to the departing employees. Heartfelt and personal words were also offered by the department representatives and, on behalf of Tobias Leisge, by Lorraine Herrmann, the deputy principal of the Steinmühle Bilingual Elementary School.

A warm welcome to all newcomers!

As the new school year begins, we also welcome new colleagues. Following Janine Küster’s departure, Julia Daube is now taking over as principal of the Bilingual Elementary School. Niki Johnson and Sophia Fleißner are joining the faculty at the Bilingual Elementary School. In the high school division, Steinmühle is also welcoming Philipp Knaack and Olaf Roth for the new school year; Roth will be teaching a greater number of music classes.

From Steinmühle Boarding School to Professional Sports: Benedikt Mons Plays American Football

Former Students & Alumni, Life at Boarding School, News, Sports & Health, Talent Development

The annual Super Bowl, the championship game of the U.S. National Football League (NFL), fills the coffers and empties the beverage shelves in supermarkets. Many fans in Europe are also eagerly following the action. Benedikt Mons, who just graduated from Steinmühle Boarding School with his high school diploma in hand, remains one of the biggest fans. His goal: to play in the NFL himself one day.

First Contact as an Eighth-Grader

It’s not just a pipe dream. Benedikt has a plan, and he’s sticking to it. After joining Steinmühle in eighth grade, a classmate took him to a football practice. The sport isn’t exactly gentle. But that didn’t stop him from continuing to train.

Important Companions

Benedikt played more and more often and made the U18 Hesse select team. He connected with players from Bad Homburg, joined the Sentinels, and played in the GFL-Juniors—the youth Bundesliga of the American Football Association of Germany (AFVD). He also came to see the team’s coach, Markus Hackenberg, as a mentor: “He helped me develop as a player.” In 2024, Benedikt Mons was named to the U19 national team.

Benedikt Mons must have continued to do something right, because in early 2025, the next step was on the horizon: a move to the Frankfurt Galaxy and the transition to professional sports in the European League of Football. This was a decisive step for the humble Steinmühle student—who took advanced courses in political science and math—who is grateful not only to Steinmühle for supporting his athletic career, but also to others, such as the sports director of his current club, Thomas Kösling. “He motivated me to balance my high school diploma and training”—training four times a week, no less.

Reaching Full Potential in the U.S.

Logistically, things will get a little easier for Benedikt now that he has his high school diploma in hand. After the season, he’d ideally like to attend college in the United States. “I definitely want to keep playing, and I want to do it in the U.S. Everything about the sport is much more professional there, from training all the way to the individual support athletes receive. To reach your full potential in this sport, you have to go to the U.S.”

When it comes to this step and his athletic career, Benedikt Mons knows his parents have his back: “They support me.” Whenever possible, they even sit in the stands at his games. The high school senior regularly competes against his brother in sports. But his brother is better at hockey and tennis. “I’d rather stick with football,” Benedikt says with determination.

A lot of practice and talent, too

When asked about his career goal, the former boarding school student replies, “To make a living from sports.” Benedikt views being tied to equipment like a helmet and shoulder pads as a temporary phase. “I want to retire in my mid-30s and have made my money in the NFL by then.” Then he could imagine being a good father and helping to make the sport more attractive in Europe: “The market is growing tremendously; there’s a lot of potential.” Until then, however, Benedikt says it will take a lot of courage, a lot of time, a lot of patience, and a lot of training.

You have to run; you have to be fast. “It’s a sport for physical types,” says Benedikt Mons, describing the rough-and-tumble nature of football, while acknowledging that he himself is “genetically blessed—and grateful for it.” He’s ideal for the tight end position in football; the rest he’s earned through hard work.

But he knows that a certain amount of talent is definitely part of it. Angela Heinemann
