Sports & Health at the Steinmühle
Promote healthy physical, emotional, and intellectual personal development
On its spacious grounds, the Steinmühle offers a wide and varied range of opportunities for a wide variety of sports activities. Balanced physical and sensory experiences support the healthy physical, emotional, and intellectual development of our students. This is closely linked to the development of a positive self-concept as well as emotional and social stability.
At Steinmühle, the promotion of sports and physical activity is not viewed as competing with other areas of activity, but rather as a supportive and complementary part of a holistic education.
Sports Programs (Overview)
Bilingual Elementary School, 4th grade and 5th grades: Physical education classes in the gym or on the outdoor sports fields, or swimming lessons at the Wehrda Swimming Pool
The Spring Run is a joint running event for 5th and 6th grades
Grades 5 and 6:
Lunchtime clubs offering ball games, Jugger, trampoline, horseback riding, fencing, judo, and rowing
7th Grade:
Rowing is a quarterly focus of instruction. At the end of seventh grade, a rowing camp lasting several days takes place at Lake Eder.
Grades 8 and 9:
Performance-oriented elective course in rowing. In addition, rowing with blind and visually impaired students can be selected as part of the elective course “Navigating Rivers and Lakes” in cooperation with the Marburg Institute for the Blind. Students can further develop their skills through strength and cardio training programs offered as part of the curriculum.
In addition, students can further develop their skills in soccer and volleyball, as well as participate in the physical activity program as part of the Duke Award, through elective courses (WU) in grades 8, 9, and 10.
In 8th grade, there is a winter sports trip to Mayrhofen (Austria). All students in this grade level spend a week at the “Gschösswandhaus” learning to ski or snowboard, or improving their existing skills.
High School:
Physical Education is one of our core subjects in the upper school. As early as the introductory phase, interested students are introduced to the subject “Physical Education in Theory and Practice” through the so-called “profile preparation course” as a prelude to the advanced Physical Education course, where they also meet their future advanced Physical Education teacher. Sports is then offered as an advanced course starting in the qualification phase.
In high school, students enroll in a basic course based on their interests. Care is taken to ensure that all basic courses offered differ in terms of the areas of physical activity they cover. In addition to the regular two-hour basic courses, a three-hour basic physical education course is also offered so that students can choose physical education as a fourth or fifth exam subject for the Abitur, even if they have not selected an advanced physical education course.
All age groups:
Children and teens of all ages can play during recess on the grass field, the two artificial turf fields, the multipurpose field, and the basketball court in front of the gym. The “Active Recess” program takes place in the gym during the winter and outdoors in the summer. Equipment such as waveboards, speedminton, badminton, and ball games is available for checkout.
The Steinmühle has a cardio room and a weight room. Both rooms are primarily used by our competitive rowers for training purposes and as part of the advanced sports course.
Achievements in regional and national school competitions
In addition to regular physical education classes, Steinmühle offers a variety of other activities. Our school teams consistently achieve great success in volleyball, soccer, basketball, and artistic gymnastics at regional and national school competitions such as “Youth Training for the Olympics and Paralympics.” Preparation for school competitions takes place on a regular basis through elective courses, extracurricular clubs, or partnerships with local sports clubs.
Music at the Steinmühle
Rowing is a quarterly focus in physical education classes for 7th graders. On 7th-grade Sports Day, the traditional rowing event takes place at the school’s own boathouse. Toward the end of 7th grade, a multi-day rowing trip to Lake Eder is on the calendar. Young people with a passion for rowing can choose the sports track in high school and select rowing as part of the advanced sports course. At the nearby club Rudern und Sport Steinmühle (www.rudern.steinmuehle.de), students can train alongside their schoolwork—depending on their interest and ambition—for regattas and even at the elite level.
Making Friends with the Ponies – Getting Up Close and Personal with the Horses
Children can begin their first experiences with horses at Steinmühle as early as elementary school. For interested students at the Bilingual Elementary School, an after-school club focused on horseback riding is offered on Fridays after school.
In grades 5 and 6, students have the opportunity to participate in an extracurricular club on Thursdays from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m.
The course covers important basics about horses. This helps participants learn how to handle the animals safely:
- What should you keep in mind when working with horses?
- How are they kept, and what do they eat?
- What does care involve?
- How do you get on a horse?
- …and much more
Before beginning the riding program, it is important to acquire some basic knowledge that will make the joy of riding, success, and fun possible in the first place.
To ensure this happens, experienced club leaders are available to the children at the Steinmühle Riding School, which is led by Beate Schridde (Level A Instructor). They gently and properly introduce the girls and boys to horseback riding.

In cooperation with the agency Play the Pro, Steinmühle offers a professional tennis program for all grade levels on campus, from 1st to 13th grade. Three courts can be used simultaneously. The program is designed for both beginners and athletes who already compete in tournaments.
The program is primarily aimed at Steinmühle students, who no longer have to travel long distances to play tennis after school. Training times are therefore primarily scheduled for the afternoon. However, morning sessions are also offered to accommodate parents’ schedules.
Tennis camps are also available.
Information about the full range of programs can be found here: https://www.play-the-pro.com/steinm%C3%BChle-schule-internat/.
