Politics Firsthand—Lawmakers Share Insights on the Practical Side of Politics

Archive, News

On April 20 and 27, 2015, the 11th-grade students taking political science courses had the opportunity to learn a bit about how politics works.

Dr. Thomas Spies, a member of the state parliament and SPD mayoral candidate, and Dr. Stefan Heck, a CDU member of the Bundestag, each spent two hours answering questions from the students.

Both willingly shared details about their careers, their motivations for entering politics, and the day-to-day realities of a lawmaker’s work. Both elected officials did a very good job of coming across as authentic and conveying a positive image of the political profession.

After brief introductions, all questions were addressed in detail. The students showed great interest in the following areas:

  • Political Biography / Professional Background / Career Goals
  • Current Issues in the County and City
  • Education Policy
  • The Daily Life of a Member of Congress
  • Refugee Issue
  • Opportunities for Shaping Policy

Rowers from Steinmühle and blista kick off summer training with an expanded fleet

Archive, News

At the “season opener” after the Easter break, the rowers from Steinmühle had plenty to celebrate. The athletes are looking forward to the 2015 rowing season with great optimism. Winter training was very effective, as was already evident in several indoor competitions. Things are going great for Lucas Schäfer, Marburg’s 2014 Athlete of the Year; the club is in good shape; and now they’ve even christened a new four-man boat to kick off the season.

Fortunately, the work of the Steinmühlen rowers is also appreciated and recognized by others. Jürgen Hertlein, chairman of the sports association; Marian Zachow, first deputy district administrator; and Björn Backes from the City of Marburg’s Sports Office were all eager to attend the christening of the new boat.

The new four-person boat was funded by the school and will help further support the“Steinmühle and blista in the Same Boat” project. This also gave Claus Duncker, the chairman of blista, another opportunity to watch his students at work on the water.

Lucas Schäfer was also there for the season opener and was greeted with great fanfare, as he had won silver in the lightweight coxless pair over 2,000 meters at the German Championships on Beetzsee in Brandenburg/Havel, where he had won silver in the lightweight coxless pair over 2,000 meters in the final race with Alexander Diedrich from Treis-Karden. For Lucas, this runner-up finish at the German Championships is another step toward earning a spot on one of the national team’s boats.

Steinmühle Wins Overall Title – BoulderCup Hosted by the Landschulheime in Marburg

Archive

On Saturday, April 18, the traditional Landschulheime BoulderCup took place in Marburg for the first time. For several years now, the boarding schools have been meeting regularly to compete against each other on the climbing wall.
As the host, Steinmühle welcomed four participants from Landheim Schondorf, five guests from the Hermann-Lietz-Schule in Bieberstein, and seven climbing enthusiasts from the Birklehof boarding school. Steinmühle itself fielded nine participants.
The meeting point for all boarding schools was the Marburg Climbing Gym. For over a year now, young and old alike have found excellent technical facilities there and, above all, a competent and friendly staff. The staff proved exceptionally flexible and responded very graciously to last-minute changes and route requests.
After a warm welcome from this year’s BoulderCup organizer, Christian Schäfer (Director of Westfalenhaus), the starting signal was given at 1:30 p.m., and the competitions began. A total of 25 participants competed in four categories: under 13, under 16, over 16, and educators/alumni.
Under the watchful eyes of the other participants and numerous spectators (official competitions in Munich usually attract less interest), it was now time to conquer the climbing wall. With plenty of perseverance and determination, the students mastered even the trickiest sections. They were cheered on enthusiastically while bouldering.
By around 4:00 p.m., the winners in each category had been determined, and everyone set off for the Steinmühle, feeling both proud and tired.
A delicious dinner was already waiting there for the Steinmühle community and their guests. The glorious awards ceremony took place later that evening. Afterward, everyone celebrated in style at the Teestube.
The guests spent the night in the gym, and the hearty brunch on Sunday morning provided a wonderful conclusion to a successful 2015 BouldlerCup.

Winners:
U13: Frederik (Steinmühle)
U16: Tim (Schondorf) and Eva (Birklehof)
Over-16: Felix (Schondorf) and Julia (Birklehof)
Teachers: Schäfer (Steinmühle) and Ines (Steinmühle)

This year, the overall trophy went to Steinmühle, which narrowly prevailed with three individual victories over Schondorf and Birklehof, both of which won two trophies each.
We congratulate the winners and participants on their outstanding achievements!
A big thank you to everyone involved for their dedication and sportsmanship during the competition. We wish everyone a safe (climbing) year and look forward to seeing you all again at the next BoulderCup. We’d also like to take this opportunity to extend a special thank you to everyone else who worked behind the scenes to ensure the success of the Cup!

Archive, News

The 10th- and 11th-grade students participating in this year’s exchange program to the U.S. have returned from their three-week trip.

They and their accompanying teachers lived with American families, attended high school, and went on field trips in the area around our partner school.

Last week, the exciting cities of Chicago and New York City were on the itinerary. Everyone is already looking forward to the Americans’ visit.
