Boarding School Weekend, February 21–22

Archive

Over the weekend, the Steinmühlen buses took all snow and winter sports enthusiasts to Winterberg. After a trip of just under an hour, the students reached their destination: Winterberg, the place in North Rhine-Westphalia with the most reliable snow conditions and the heart of the Sauerland Winter Sports Arena. Ten ski resorts with 83 runs totaling 50 kilometers in length—ranging from easy to difficult—awaited the boarding school community. Under a bright blue sky and with perfect snow conditions, everyone enjoyed skiing and snowboarding in the Winterberg ski area.

Those who stayed behind relaxed at the Steinmühle during a group evening gathering. Some students from the Hessenhaus paid a visit to Martin Blankenhagen’s art studio. They tried their hand at free-form art and experimented with various materials.

Steinmühle Mourns the Loss of Berthold Rübsam

Archive, News

Steinmühle mourns the loss of Berthold Rübsam (July 23, 1931 – February 19, 2015). We have lost a wonderful former colleague who, not least because of his kindness, was one of the most beloved teachers at Steinmühle. We will publish a detailed tribute in consultation with his children, to whom we extend our deepest sympathy and condolences.

Isabel Weitzel (12e) Gets Off to a Successful Start in the New Season / Julius Grau (11e) Takes Bronze at the “Süddeutsche”

Archive, News

She hadn’t been exaggerating: In the October letter to parents, hammer thrower Isabel Weitzel sounded very confident when asked about the switch to the heavier women’s hammer. At the throwing meet in Niederselters on February 7, she handled the new 4-kg hammer with ease and achieved a distance of 48.20 m.

Isabel, an athlete on the DLV junior national team, immediately moved into 7th place on the DLV’s annual rankings.

However, Julius Grau is still 6 cm short of making the DLV’s annual high jump leaderboard. At the South German Championships in Karlsruhe on the first weekend of February, he once again cleared 1.87 m and finished in a commendable third place in his U18 age group.

The school community wishes both track and field athletes good luck and success for the new season—and hopes it will be injury-free!

Young revelers on Altweiberfastnacht

Archive, News

At exactly 2:11 p.m. on Altweiberfastnacht Thursday, the students from the 5th and 6th grades marched into the gym and enjoyed a colorful program featuring fun relay races, a mysterious kidnapping story, and various dance performances.

And to top it all off, there were the popular Carnival fries again.

Good prospects for Leon Sauer (9c) even after just a short training period

Archive, News

As the German ergometer runner-up, Lucas Schäfer is a strong candidate for the Olympic team

The young RuS rowers achieved top results at the Ergocup Rhein-Neckar, a highly competitive event drawing a large field of elite rowers from five federal states: Leon Sauer (9c), who competed in the 15/16-year-old junior division and hopes to qualify for the Hessian Rowing Association’s eight, reinforced his case for a spot on the selection boat by finishing 7th out of 38 competitors, setting a personal best of 5:00.1 minutes in an official competition—making him the sixth-best rower from Hesse. State coach Harald Blum expressed satisfaction with the athlete, who has only been rowing seriously since last fall.
In the 13-year-old boys’ division, the two RuS young rowers Jonas Neirich (7a) and Lasse Jacob (6a) returned to the Steinmühle with 8th and 9th-place finishes. In their very first race, both demonstrated great fighting spirit. Luca Hahn (6a) also showed great fighting spirit, finishing in 6th place, and Leon Vielhaben ( 8c) narrowly missed the podium by just one second. Coxswain Viktor Zovko (7c) supported the team with his active participation.

At the final of the German Indoor Series in Essen-Kettwig, Lucas Schäfer, our 20-year-old RuS athlete, became the German ergometer runner-up, thereby once again earning a spot on the 2016 Olympic team. He narrowly lost the final to Lars Wichert, the stroke of the German four, but his performance earned him the No. 1 spot among all lightweight rowers in Germany!

Lisa Kemena again!

Archive, Uncategorized

Lisa Kemena, who participated very successfully in the Inventors’ Lab at the Center for Chemistry in Darmstadt last May, continues to enjoy success.

Lisa has advanced to the third round of the Chemistry Olympiad! This means she is among the top 60 students in all of Germany (out of a total of over 1,700 participants). A total of six students from Hesse are competing. That’s a fantastic achievement!

The third round will take place in Göttingen during the week of March 3–10, 2015, right before the Hessian Abitur.

The school community congratulates Lisa and will be rooting for her during the first week of March.

Chess Club Members Succeed in the Pawn Diploma

Archive, News

The German Chess Federation’s “Pawn Diploma” is designed to demonstrate that one has mastered the starting position, possible moves, and chess notation. And all participants in the chess club from grades 5 and 6 passed the test. They received their “Pawn Diploma” on January 29, 2015, from their instructor, Mr. Daniel Allig.

Mr. Wemme thanked Mr. Allig for his dedicated and inspiring work and wished him all the best as he works toward earning his Tower and King diplomas.

The photo shows Mr. Allig with his young chess players. Tilman Molzberger is missing.

Lucas Schäfer, Marburg’s Male Athlete of the Year / Nathalie Pohl, Marburg’s Female Athlete of the Year

Archive, News

Lucas Schäfer will always have fond memories of 2014: He graduated from high school in early summer, impressed with top finishes at the Hessian, German, and European Championships, and also performed exceptionally well in his new age group. As a testament to his progress, he was named to the association’s elite squad in the fall of 2014, and as the icing on the cake, he was honored as Marburg’s 2014 Athlete of the Year on January 29, 2015.

The 2014 Athlete of the Year awards were jointly organized by the Ahrens department store, the Oberhessische Presse, the City of Marburg, and Sparkasse Marburg-Biedenkopf.

Our rowing coach, Martin Strohmenger—who has played a major role in Lucas’s successes—was able to celebrate alongside Lucas (see photo), as he achieved a commendable third-place finish in the “Coach of the Year” category.

Nathalie Pohl, who is also part of the Class of 2014, was named Marburg’s 2014 Athlete of the Year. The long-distance swimmer was unable to attend the ceremony; she is currently abroad.

In the “Youth Athlete of the Year” category, Philipp Leo Mengel (12th grade) put in a commendable performance and helped ensure that Steinmühle could once again make a name for itself with its successful athletes.

The school community would like to thank and congratulate its athletes and wish them a successful 2015 season!
