Open Stage at Steinmühle Bilingual Elementary School: An Event Full of Talent and Emotion

Art, Music & Theater, Bilingual Elementary School, News

Teacher Lisa Smit opened this year’s Open Stage at the Steinmühle Bilingual Elementary School with the prediction, “It will be amazing.” And she was right: Together with her co-host, student Mara, she charmingly and energetically guided the audience through a program marked by creative performances and emotional moments.

The event featured a variety of poems, songs, skits, and acrobatics, with all grade levels participating. Some students had to overcome their stage fright to present their performances in front of an audience. But they were rewarded with loud applause, as their performances delighted the audience.

The event featured musical accompaniment from instruments such as the piano and violin, which enriched the program. While some performances were simply meant to make people laugh and marvel, others were also educational: for example, one skit addressed the proper safety precautions to take during a thunderstorm.

Saying goodbye was also a topic

The event did not end without a certain sense of melancholy. It was also a time to say goodbye to teacher Lisa Forchheim, who is leaving the Bilingual Elementary School. Another emotional highlight was the farewell to Class 4, whose students were set to move on to middle school the following school year. The third-graders bid them farewell with a lovingly rehearsed song that created a particularly touching atmosphere for everyone present.

The Open Stage event impressively showcased the diversity and talent of the elementary school students and served as a successful conclusion to the school year at the Steinmühle Bilingual Elementary School. It was an event that sent the audience home with smiles—and certainly a few moments of reflection as well.

Friends of the School Association Supports More Physical Activity During Recess

Collaborations & Partnerships, News, Sports & Health

A beach volleyball court and two table tennis tables have recently been installed between the Forum and the Atrium. These and other sports equipment are intended to encourage middle school students to be more active during breaks—an initiative of the School Parents’ Council (SEB) that the Friends of the School Association, chaired by Jasmine Weidenbach, was happy to support with 6,800 euros. The new sports facility was officially opened on May 17 with a ceremony organized by the school’s athletic director, Marcel Kalb. The students immediately thought the new sports facilities were really cool and needed no encouragement to try them out right away. It goes without saying that the SEB, the Friends of the School Association, the teachers, and the school administration were all very pleased with this development.

Gardening with Brand-New Raised Beds, Thanks to Support

Bilingual Elementary School, Collaborations & Partnerships, Ecology and Sustainability, News

Thanks to the support of the Steinmühle Friends Association, chaired by Jasmine Weidenbach, and the carpentry firm Holzbau Jasky from Stadtallendorf-Wolferode, the Steinmühle Bilingual Elementary School received new raised garden beds to continue its gardening project. After the Friends Association had already provided new gardening tools and a garden shed at the beginning of the year to help the elementary school students plant their garden, the new raised garden beds were purchased and professionally installed at various heights. In the process, some of the students proved to be real pros with the cordless screwdriver!

This was preceded by a workshop for the children on designing the raised garden beds. The project was initiated by Katrin Weißenborn. The Friends of the School Association would like to once again thank the Holzbau Jasky carpentry shop for their cooperation!

Further Promoting the Development of Reading Skills: Children’s Book Author Andreas Steinhöfel Enriched the MENTOR Gathering

Art, Music & Theater, Collaborations & Partnerships, News

As part of the “75 Years of Steinmühle” celebration week, the association MENTOR—Reading Tutors of the Marburg-Biedenkopf Region e.V.—gathered at the Steinmühle Forum, just as it had the previous summer. The Steinmühle is one of the supporters of this nonprofit association, which has made it its mission to help children from diverse backgrounds learn to read.

The music added to the atmosphere

Once again this year, Andreas Steinhöfel from Biedenkopf—a children’s and young adult author, multiple literary award winner, and mentor to the reading tutors—enriched the program with his active participation. His musical reading, titled “If My Moon Were Your Sun,” was accompanied by an impressive musical performance. Tom Herfert on saxophone and Mingzhou Yan on piano performed works by Sergei Prokofiev and Georges Bizet, adding a wonderful atmosphere to the reading.

Listening was an experience

Andreas Steinhöfel captivated the audience with his lively, emotional storytelling style, which truly immersed the listeners in the action. His storytelling skills made listening to him a special experience.

Inge Maisch, chairwoman of MENTOR Marburg-Biedenkopf, expressed her delight at the lively turnout for this annual event. She praised the dedication of everyone who volunteers their time to help young people gain access to reading, comprehension, and knowledge.

Back at the Steinmühle with the podcast “Des Pudels Kern”

Collaborations & Partnerships, Events & Celebrations, Former Students & Alumni, News

“Des Pudels Kern” is the name of a podcast that recorded a live segment on campus during Steinmühlen Festival Week: After an extensive look back at the past during festival events and the like, the focus has now shifted to the future. Former Steinmühlen students Philipp-Leo Mengel, Philipp Kreiter, and Marco Kosic posed the following question to the audience in the boarding school’s well-attended tea room: Does school actually prepare students well for the future, and does it inspire future innovators?

The Environment Influences Innovative Thinking

What could schools do better to inspire innovative ways of thinking and ideas in their students? What role does education play in fostering creativity and adaptability? — Two essential qualities for innovation.

The participants reflected on their own formative school experiences and examined which structures and teaching methods foster innovative thinking. Particular emphasis was placed on the importance of environments that support experimentation, a willingness to take risks, and critical thinking. At the same time, the podcast episode questioned traditional educational approaches and emphasized how interdisciplinary approaches and tackling real-world problems can better prepare students for the challenges of a rapidly changing world. In doing so, they compared educational systems in different countries and also noted a correlation with the social environment. Good grades in school or college are not necessarily an indication of strong professional performance. The podcasters cited examples of students who struggled in high school, such as Steve Jobs and Dr. Martin Luther King.

Respond flexibly to problems

The podcasters noted that schools can learn from innovators to raise awareness and create the necessary conditions. As for the personal qualities of potential innovators, the key points ranged from “being good at math and science” to “responding flexibly to problems” and “knowing how to search effectively on Google”. Other qualities mentioned included an open-minded approach to outcomes and an answer to the question: “How do I apply my knowledge?” The role of college dropouts and career changers was also discussed.

Leo, Philipp, and Marco have personally experienced in recent years that the conditions for innovative projects, startups, and ultimately for innovative thinking and action are not the same everywhere in the world. Leo, who is now an economist at Bocconi University in Chicago, studied at Oxford and at University College London. Philipp Kreiter also studied at Oxford and now works at Mercedes-Benz in Stuttgart as a product manager for strategy for the Mercedes-Benz Operating System.

Steinmühle as a Learning Organization

The third member of the trio, Marco Kosic, works in the creative industries. He is an editor and communications consultant who focuses on topics relevant to culture and society. Among other things, he is responsible for the design of the podcast, which covers a wide range of topics in the fields of culture, philosophy, music, and science and is often produced in collaboration with institutions such as WDR.

“For us at Steinmühle, hosting this event was both refreshing and educational,” enthused Dirk Lange, a member of the school administration. “After all, Steinmühle sees itself as a learning institution—and there were plenty of opportunities to learn something new.”

The gig quadruple sculls got off to a flying start

News, Rowing, Sports & Health, Talent Development

A great success for our Steinmühlen girls’ gig quadruple sculls at “Youth Trains for the Olympics” in Competition Class III: In their very first regatta together, the team immediately put in a strong performance, reported coach Martin “Stromi” Strohmenger. Despite a valiant effort, the athletes unfortunately fell short of second place, which would have secured them a spot in the finals. Nevertheless, the five are eager for more and already have their sights set on next year. This could also mean more reinforcements from the younger age groups. Our photo shows the successful and dedicated rowers (from left): Madlena Preck, coxswain Lilu Schmidt, Emilia Taschner, Noomi Schneider, and Anna Lisa Wilhelm.

High-Quality Performances at the Summer Concert

Art, Music & Theater, News

What a wonderful treat for the ears, what a spectacular sight! Time and again, you see that when a teacher is fully committed to the task at hand—whether at the conductor’s podium or playing an instrument—the students are too! And that’s exactly how it was at the Steinmühle summer concert shortly before the end of the school year.

Once again, the event offered the audience an impressive showcase of the vocal and instrumental talents of students of various ages at our school. The program featured the 6th-grade choir, led by teachers Daniel Sans and Anna Prokop; the 5th-grade wind ensemble, conducted by Andreas Jamin; the concert band and the 6th-grade wind ensemble, conducted by Stephan Reissig; and the 10th-grade class, led by Anna Prokop. The concert band presented itself as an impressive ensemble that has grown out of the 6th-grade wind ensemble and—supported by several students from grades 6, 9, and 12—delivered a confident performance.

“That really hits the spot”—that’s what the audience thought as they listened to the colorful medley of songs performed, including “We Will Rock You,” “Rock Around the Clock,” “The Final Countdown,” “Radioactive,” and, to wrap things up, “What a Wonderful World” and “Lean on Me.”

The evening, hosted by Ulrike Wilmsmeyer and with technical support from the Sound & Light Club, showcased the results of a tremendous effort by all the performing students and all the teachers in the music department at Steinmühle. Hats off to them!

9th Grade: Back from the language trip to Vila-real, highly motivated

Languages & International Affairs, News, Steinmühle on the Road

The second exchange program to Spain for the Steinmühlen 9th-grade class took a group to the city of Vila-real, made possible by ERASMUS funding. “This support enhances the quality and organization,” reports María Ramos, offering insight into the preparation and planning of these projects, which she applies for together with her colleague Laura Cubillas. The exchanges pursue goals in the area of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD).

“For the students, these trips always mean new experiences,” said María Ramos. “A different climate, a different environment, an even more mindful approach to water, and different flora and fauna. We were delighted to have found a partner school in Vila-real that also operates sustainably. This school works on practically the same projects as the Steinmühle.”

Activates dormant vocabulary

The trip to Vila-real was very rewarding for the students on several levels. Many activities were woven into the program, including tours of caves and rock formations, a boat trip, and a visit to the city of Valencia. The group of 9th graders from Steinmühle benefited linguistically through the active use of Spanish, English, and, of course, German, and more than a few of them realized during conversations just how extensive their foreign-language vocabulary actually is.

María Ramos: “It was a wonderful language trip, and the students came back highly motivated. What’s more, they even made friends.”

The following photos give a glimpse of the trip—not only of the English classes, classroom discussions, and various field trips, but also of the visit to City Hall and the soccer stadium of the quite popular soccer club Villareal CF. There, students from Steinmühle clearly had a lot of fun simulating a press conference.

Supported by Erasmus: 9th-grade exchange to Granada, Spain

Languages & International Affairs, News, Steinmühle on the Road

The trip to Spain for Mar Montenegro’s group began with a flight on a very small plane via Madrid to Granada, where we were picked up at the airport by our respective host families. Over the next few days, after a Spanish breakfast with our host families in the morning, we went to our exchange students’ schools with them. Our class was split among three different schools, all located in the center of Granada.

In the mornings, we sometimes participated in the Spanish students’ regular classes. At the schools, we were also able to continue working on our ERASMUS projects. Since our exchange was funded by ERASMUS, we focused on four topics:

  • Interfaith Dialogue/Coexistence of the Three Religions (Cultures): Islam, Judaism, and Christianity—Then and Now
  • Environment/Climate Change: Water as a Fundamental and Indispensable Resource; Water Management in Marburg and Granada Then and Now
  • Sustainable School: Mobility/Waste Separation/Sustainable Consumption
  • Environment/Climate Change: Changes in the Surroundings After class, we often met up with others from our Spanish course in the city and went on excursions together, led by our three accompanying teachers (Mar Montenegro, Ronja Heckmann, Stephan Kersten). A major highlight for us students was the trip to the Alhambra, the ancient fortress built by the Moors. We were able to explore the entire interior, and the magnificent architecture and the view over the entire city were particularly impressive. In the afternoons, we had free time with “our” Spanish friends and could go shopping in the city or go on our own excursions. On the weekends, some of us went on individual outings with our host families, such as trips to the beach. But we also went as a group to the big “Corpus” fair, which took place for Corpus Christi. With all the rides and the traditional clothing everyone was wearing there, it was a wonderful experience. To wrap up the trip, we went hiking in the mountains and then swam in a lake. The next morning, we drove to the airport together and arrived safely back in Marburg after a 12-hour journey. Overall, we thought the Spanish exchange was really cool, and it was definitely an eventful exchange.

Fun Takes Center Stage: Steinmühle Has the Largest Contingent at the Marburg Night Marathon

Contests & Awards, Former Students & Alumni, Life at Boarding School, News, Sports & Health

With nine relay teams, three half-marathon runners (Leon Vielhaben, Ron Owen, and Clara Freudenstein), and one marathon runner (Marlon Welsch), Steinmühle was once again the largest group of runners at this year’s Marburg Night Marathon.

The groups were diverse, meaning they were mixed in terms of running ability and not focused on achieving particularly high rankings. Fun and camaraderie were once again the main priorities this year, reported Principal Björn Gemmer, who successfully participated in the race. His group secured the top spot among those who finished. The fact that this particular group didn’t have a name—and that this was even noted on the certificate—was a minor source of amusement.

The following photos, showing all participants, depict—in no particular order—those who started the Marburg Night Marathon at the Steinmühle.

Have fun scrolling!
