Bodam Lee Takes Third Place at the National Finals of “Jugend musiziert”

Archive, News

Bodam Lee (9b) returned extremely pleased from her first appearance at the national finals of “Jugend Musiziert,” the German Music Council’s competition for young musicians. More than 80 participants from Germany had qualified for the finals in Kassel in the violin/age group IV category, including six musicians from Hesse and Bodam Lee, our student.

In her performance, she presented a mix of classical and modern styles—from Beethoven’s Sonata No. 3 in E-flat major, Op. 12, to Isang Yun’s *Li-Na im Garten* —and considered her third-place finish a fitting recognition of her performance and the effort she put into preparing for it.

Jan Audretsch (6b) and Justus Schneider (9a) have qualified for the regional finals of the Pangea Competition

Archive, News

This year, 8 students from Steinmühle qualified for the intermediate round of the Pangea Competition (mathematics) in Gießen. There, they had to solve a total of 10 problems from the highest-scoring categories in 60 minutes. From this intermediate round, the top 70 students in each grade level qualified for the regional finals on June 4, and two of our students made it through:

Jan Audretsch (Class 6b) and Justus Schneider (Class 9a).

In this regional final, which takes place at seven different locations throughout Germany, participants must solve five more of the most difficult problems. Afterward, the scores of all participants will be tallied and announced at a grand awards ceremony, where all participants will be honored.

Our two finalists will be competing in Mainz, and we wish them the best of luck.

Steinmühle Soccer Team Reaches the Hessen Final Once Again

Archive, News

Our soccer team won the WK II regional tournament in Schwalmstadt and has once again qualified for the state finals in Grünberg.

As is often the case, our team struggled a bit at the start of the first game and had trouble finding their rhythm against Christophorusschule Oberurff. It wasn’t until Arthur Laux put us ahead that the team gained more confidence; they gradually found their passing rhythm and were able to dominate the game. A spectacular free kick by Jonas Pfalz late in the game then sealed the victory.

Buoyed by their victory, our team regained its usual form and dominated Kaulbach School Arolsen from the very first minute of the second game. Arthur Laux’s early goal was then built upon by Jannis Borsdorf (2 goals), Sam Kempkes, and Jakob Reinhard to make it 5–0. It wasn’t until the very end of the game that Kaulbach School scored a consolation goal.

Thanks to their team spirit and skill, the team confidently and deservedly advanced to the Hesse finals.

Congratulations, and good luck in the Hesse finals!

THE STEINMÜHLEN TEAM TAKES THE COURT FOR THE FIRST TIME AND SCORES A POINT

Archive, News

In the WK II (1999–2002) district tennis tournament of the “Youth Trains for the Olympics” competition, the Steinmühle team qualified for the regional finals. At the TV Marburg club grounds, our tennis team shone in its first tournament appearance. In their first match against the Lahntalschule Biedenkopf, Steinmühle won every singles and doubles match by a wide margin. The Europaschule from Gladenbach then also secured a commanding victory over the Lahntalschule.

Bolstered by the confidence gained from their first match, our tennis team entered the decisive second round against Gladenbach. Things got particularly exciting after the singles matches, as Max and Carlos secured two of the four singles matches, while Steinmühle had to concede the other two to the strong Europaschule. The score was 2–2. Now, at least two wins out of the three remaining doubles matches were needed for an overall victory. The tension was written all over the players’ faces, as only the first-place team could qualify for the regional finals. Our team gave it their all, fought for every point, and was rewarded with a surprising three victories. 5–2 for Steinmühle. Huge joy at the end of a great day of tennis.

Congratulations to our tennis team!

Lucas Schäfer Wins Bronze at the European Championships in the Lightweight Quadruple Sculls

Archive, News

The German lightweight four, featuring Lucas Schäfer (RuS Steinmühle), had no chance at first or second place in the final of the European Championship sprint race, but they were determined to secure third place. Although the German boat had to go through the repechage, a third-place finish behind the Swiss and the British was already a foregone conclusion.

After a steady race in which the German boat held third place from the start, things got exciting again at the end when they had to fend off an attack by the Dutch, who reached the highest speed of any boat over the final 500 meters.

In the end, there was great joy on the boat when the bronze medal was secured and the hard work of the past weeks of training was rewarded.

The Rotsee Regatta (May 19–22) will show just how far the four-man crew has come on its path to the top—and to Rio. There, they’ll be competing against the world’s best.

2016 Spring Run for Grades 5 and 6

Archive, News

By now, we can count on it: the spring run for grades 5 and 6 always brings spring-like weather and excellent performances.

The Spring Run around the boathouse features four individual races on the 1,300-meter-long “Boathouse Loop,” followed by relay races.

Paula Auschill (5a) delivered an outstanding performance this year; not only was she the fastest girl, but she also outpaced the rather fast boys in her grade.

Timo Baalbaki (6c), who had already dominated last year’s Spring Run, posted the fastest time ever. Timo was the only one to finish in under 5 minutes.

The students once again approached the event with great enthusiasm and demonstrated excellent sportsmanship by cheering each other on. This led to outstanding times in the relay races. All six classes completed the lap in less than four minutes.

Obstacle Course—Loosely Based on Takeshi’s Castle

Archive

Due to the poor weather forecast, we scrapped our original plan to go on a hike on May 1 and came up with an alternative activity instead: An obstacle course was set up in the gym, which the students then navigated. They shimmied along rings, balanced on benches and slacklines, climbed wall bars, jumped over and crawled under obstacles, and had to cross a distance with the help of a rope. That alone sounds challenging enough, but there’s more—during the course, the students were challenged by throwers using balls of various sizes and types. Using softballs, volleyballs, soccer balls, and medicine balls, a team of throwers tried to prevent the runners from reaching the finish line. Gradually, more and more students dared to take on the teachers—who made up the throwing team—and demonstrated, in sometimes creative and adventurous ways, how they could outwit the throwers. But the best was saved for last: The throwing team became the running team, and all the frustration that had built up during the game could finally be vented.

To wrap up May 1, we were able to uphold a bit of tradition after all, as the barbecue season at the Steinmühle officially kicked off. The evening came to a close with sausages and steaks, and the first rays of sunshine of the year sparked our anticipation for summer at the Lahngelände.

LEH – BoulderCup 2016 – Steinmühle Boarding School Visits Schondorf

Archive

On April 16, 2016, the traditional annual Boarding School Boulder Cup took place. In addition to the host, Landheim Schondorf, the following schools competed: Schloß Bieberstein Boarding School, Birklehof Boarding School, Schloß Neubeuern Boarding School, and Steinmühle Boarding School. Despite the surprisingly high number of participants—which was much higher than usual—the competition was conducted in a very sportsmanlike and fair manner: as is typical in bouldering, while competitors in individual categories were vying for a good placement, the spirit of camaraderie prevailed and set the tone for the excellent atmosphere. Everyone was cheered on; spectators shared in the excitement, offered help, gave tips and advice, and chatted. Even during the competition, students from the different schools mingled, and a lively exchange took place, which continued after a delicious dinner and during the dance tea that followed.

Steinmühle fielded a team of five students and two adults: Although they once again achieved strong results, they were unable to secure the overall victory:

Among the students, Frederik Schmelzer took first place in the U16 division, and Jakob Bienecker (former student) took second place in the U16 division. Due to the strong competition, the other three students were unable to place in the “top three,” but they all gained valuable experience in competitive climbing. In the adult division, Christian Schäfer took first place, and Marcus Bienecker (former member) took second place.

However, since only a small group competed this year and no female runner from Steinmühle was able to take part, it was once again not possible to secure the overall victory. As a result, the trophy for the overall winner remained with the host town of Schondorf this year, which confidently secured the overall victory with four first-place finishes.

The 2017 LEH BoulderCup will be held next year at the Birklehof boarding school; the dates are currently being finalized.

Photos from the Cup will be posted shortly.
