Cultural Evening 2016

Students present a varied program

The performers at this year’s Cultural Evening were treated to enthusiastic applause from the large audience.

The “Speech” section featured both thoughtful prose and entertaining scenes. These were:

the speeches addressed to adults by Lea Lessing, Tessa Deusing, Abdallah Jaber, and Raphael Hettche,
the mystery story reading featuring texts from 7th grade,
“Letters to Trees and Clouds” by the Theater Club for Grades 5–6 and
The Loriot Scenes from the Q3 Drama Class.

The musical lineup was surprisingly diverse, ranging from chamber music to Syrian hip hop to well-known international classics. The program included:

the energetic performance by the Bremerhaus Band,
the piece “Africa” by the Chamber Music Club and
Two Schlager classics from the WU: Songs and Stories from Around the World.

The natural sciences department showcased its cultural side. The program included:

The dramatic reenactment of the invention of nylon thread by the Q3 Chemistry class.

The students from “Sound & Light,” led by Sam Kempkes, ensured that the event ran smoothly.

Boarding School Council Initiative: Christmas in a Shoebox

The boarding school community took part in the Germany-wide “Christmas in a Shoebox” campaign. Not all children are able to celebrate a peaceful and reflective Christmas like we do, which is why we all thought the boarding school council’s idea to brighten up the holidays a little for these children was a wonderful one. We worked hard to pack shoeboxes with warm clothing, toys, school supplies, and various small gifts. The members of the boarding school council ensured that everything ran smoothly. They provided boxes and wrapping paper and also organized transportation to the central collection point, which looked just like a little Christmas workshop. It was wonderful to see that we’re not the only ones who care about these children’s well-being and that our community can play a part in making their Christmas more special. One thing is already certain for us: This won’t be the last time we take part in this initiative!

2016 Indoor Soccer Tournament – Well-Balanced Teams Play Great Soccer

On November 18, 47 students and four teachers gathered for the 2016 Steinmühlen Soccer Tournament. Under the direction of Mr. Neirich, seven teams were formed, and the tournament kicked off with 21 games played in a round-robin format.

The even matchups kept the competition exciting right up to the final game and resulted in matches played at a remarkably high technical level. The fact that the teams were playing at a similar level was evident, among other things, in that Team F, which finished in seventh place, managed to eke out a 2-1 victory over the eventual tournament champion.

Although the balance of the teams deserves mention here, three players in particular stand out:

The Student at the Bremerhaus Morteza demonstrated not only brilliant technique but also excellent court vision. Thanks to his team-oriented play, he played a major role in his team “Die Raketen” winning the tournament.

The player proved to be remarkably resilient and skillful Cecile Arroyo knew how to make her mark. The boarding school student had learned to play soccer in Alaska and had already earned plenty of respect from the “tough guys” after just her first game.

Mr. Schubert , playing as goalkeeper for the “Eisernen” (Team A), drove a number of opponents to despair. Completely focused and fearless, he confidently cleared dangerous situations in front of his goal and secured second place for his team in the final standings.

The coaching staff led by Mr. Neirich ensured that the tournament ran smoothly, and everyone was happy to have the chance to play some really good soccer again.

Election Party at the Boarding School

Since we wanted to follow the results of the U.S. election live as soon as possible, we decided to throw a small election party. Armed with classic American food and drinks, we watched the election spectacle from the tea room. We also spent the evening discussing the American electoral system and the campaign platforms of the candidates, Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump. We analyzed the swing states and predicted what results they would yield. We expected Hillary Clinton to win the election, albeit by a narrow margin.

When our eyelids finally started to get heavy, we decided to get a little more sleep before heading off to school the next day, when we could continue discussing the results. The evening was both entertaining and informative for us.

The boarding school council was re-elected

At a general assembly of all boarding students on Wednesday, October 12, 2016, we elected our Boarding School Council and the Boarding School Council Advisor. The Council represents the interests of all boarding students and is deeply committed to further developing life at the boarding school. Upcoming projects include, for example, the redesign of the tea room and a room for the Council, as well as the design of Steinmühlen sweaters. The Council also includes a dining committee and is involved in the upcoming “Christmas in a Shoebox” project, in which students will put together Christmas gifts for children who experience Christmas differently than they do, thereby spreading the Christmas message.

The Boarding School Council consists of the five house representatives: Leon Sauer, Louis Riester, Sarah Haagen, Chaymae Belkadi, and Marie Baab. Additional elected members are Yujun Wang, David Nees, and Sebastian Unsicker. The students are advised by Patric Hahn, a member of the teaching staff.

Those chemists are crazy—Advanced Chemistry Class at the cultural evening

As in previous years, the 2016 Cultural Evening featured a presentation by Dr. Jutta Töhl-Borsdorf’s advanced chemistry class. Under the theme “Chemists Are Crazy,” the students presented a dramatic reenactment of the invention of nylon thread this year. On stage, a long thread was created from two chemicals, and Riko Uphoff used a “cheese mouse” and a “Gretchen Faust” model to explain how individual molecules assemble into long chains and can ultimately form threads.

Great performance at the WK II district basketball tournament

After a series of high-level, closely contested games, Steinmühle finishes in 3rd place

The girls and boys from schools in the Marburg/Biedenkopf district put on a high-caliber performance at the basketball tournament held in the Kaufmännische Schulen gym on November 8, 2016. Five teams each from the 2000–2003 age groups competed. While the E-Schule secured a commanding victory in the girls’ division, the boys’ competition was much more exciting. Here, the Elisabethschule Marburg and the Alfred-Wegener-Schule Kirchhain entered the tournament as clear favorites.

Right in their first game, the Steinmühlen team faced off against the well-coordinated squad from Elisabethschule. They kept pace well until halftime (12–20), but then had to acknowledge the technical and physical superiority of the Elisabethschule team (17–38).

In the next two games, the boys really stepped on the gas and, thanks to strong performances, won 43–35 against Philippinum and 27–16 against Europaschule Gladenbach.

In the decisive match between the undefeated schools for the tournament title, Kirchhain defeated E-Schule 30–29. In the tournament’s final match, Steinmühle could still have secured second place with a victory over Kirchhain. It was an almost impossible task, given that their lineup included a player who towered over everyone else by at least a head and had already played in the 3rd Bundesliga.

Our guys managed to keep the game close for a long time and even tied the score at 23–23 at one point. Two missed free throws and a silly technical foul brought Kirchhain back into the game, and the tournament’s standout player single-handedly sealed the 26–33 final score.

However, the Steinmühlen students were able to leave the district basketball tournament with their heads held high after securing a fantastic third-place finish, having put up a great, spirited fight in every game.

Special praise is also due to the coaches, Theo Nauheimer and Tom Bartsch, who demonstrated a sure hand in leading the team and fostered harmony and enthusiasm among the players.
