First Day of School for 5th Graders: An Important Day for Girls, Boys, and Their Families

Events & Celebrations, News

The doors to the Steinmühle Forum were wide open on this beautiful summer day—and that was a good thing, because it allowed all the parents, grandparents, siblings, and relatives of our fifth-graders to watch the entire orientation program. It really is a special day when high school begins at Steinmühle!

14 Languages in the International High School Program

We are starting the 2024/25 school year with four classes in Grade 5. In addition to 5a, 5b, and 5c, Class 5i is the lowest grade level in our International High School Program. And indeed, there were quite a few familiar faces in this class—students who, after attending the Steinmühle Bilingual Elementary School, are continuing their educational journey in the International High School Program. The girls and boys attending this program speak 14 different languages at home!

A Glimpse into the World of Music

Today, however, on the first day of school, all 5th-grade students were introduced to a different language: the language of music! The current sixth-graders once again performed excerpts from their anniversary musical—which they had staged in June to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Steinmühle School & Boarding School—and presented their choral singing. The music department—led by Ulrike Wilmsmeyer, Anna Prokop, Frank Wemme, and Daniel Sans—had pulled out all the stops to give the audience a taste of vocal and instrumental performances right from the start. With popular songs from music history, starting with the 1950s, the sixth graders immediately captivated the entire audience. Catchy tunes like “Rock Around the Clock,” “Dancing Queen,” “They Don’t Care About Us,” and “Waka Waka” simultaneously took the audience on a journey back in time to Steinmühle’s past and brought to mind many a school milestone.

Trust, Patience, and Fun

“Have faith, be patient, and have fun together”—this was the advice the teachers gave the students as they left. Principal Björn Gemmer concluded by suggesting that everyone stop by to see Jasmine Weidenbach on their way out. The chairwoman of the Steinmühle Marburg Friends Association had a welcome surprise in store for everyone.

Photos are part of it

The students in the new 5th-grade classes then gathered at the legendary climbing spider in the schoolyard to pose for the photographer—first by class with their parents, and then as a whole class on their own.

The photos below show, in the following order, the classes with their homeroom teachers: Stephan Steinebach (5i), Dirk Lange (5c), Jonathan Gröb (5b), and Rieke Schüssler (5a). The other photos provide a glimpse of the first-day-of-school celebration, which was organized primarily by students in the 6th-grade classes.

Welcome to our school: We welcome the “first-graders” at our bilingual elementary school

Bilingual Elementary School, Events & Celebrations, News

“Nice to see you all!” With warm words and plenty of music, we welcomed the new students of our bilingual elementary school—along with their parents, grandparents, and relatives—to our school’s lovingly decorated auditorium. It was a big day for the 17 students from diverse international backgrounds! Over the next four years, Janine Küster, Lori Herrmann, and their team will prepare the boys and girls in two languages—English and German—for their secondary school careers, which will ideally lead them to Steinmühle’s rapidly growing International High School program.

The First Stage Performance

The morning’s program consisted of musical performances featuring both instruments and voices. As is tradition, the “older” children at the Steinmühle Bilingual Elementary School gave their younger classmates a warm welcome with songs and poems, and the excitement spread quickly. During Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s “Eine kleine Nachtmusik,” the audience—which included Principal Björn Gemmer—actively joined in, clapping, patting their hands, and stomping their feet. It was still a bit nerve-wracking for the youngest children on our campus, however, as they were called up to the stage one by one. But their homeroom teachers, Hannah Achenbach and Tobias Leisge, were already there waiting to welcome them. By the time the audience broke into a huge round of applause, the ice had completely melted.

Photos as a keepsake

To commemorate that morning—which will remain a very special day in the lives of each and every student—numerous photos were taken of the “first graders” themselves, their entire class, and their classmates’ performances on stage. Jasmine Weidenbach, the chairperson of the Steinmühle Support Association, even gave each and every one of them a personal gift.

We hope you all have a great time at the Steinmühle!

“It’s as if I never left”: Life Returns to Steinmühle Boarding School

Life at Boarding School, News

After taking care of the final formalities with our administrative team—our new boarding students were already off with our teachers to their living groups and settling into their rooms! We’re thrilled to have welcomed so many new faces to our Steinmühle boarding school yesterday and could hardly wait for all our returning boarding students to arrive shortly afterward. — After six weeks of summer break, our campus is bustling with life again!

A seamless transition from home

While the children and teenagers were getting accustomed to their—in some cases—new “second home” or had returned to their usual place of residence and school, the parents made themselves comfortable with coffee, cake, fruit, and soft drinks, chatted with boarding school director Anke Muszynski and school principal Björn Gemmer, and were delighted to see how smoothly the transition from home to the Steinmühle Marburg boarding school had gone for the new 2024–25 school year. “It feels like I never even left,” said a high school boarding student happily upon his arrival.

Delighted with a Great Start

Our photos show (from left) our licensed nurse, Mandy Mönke, with our boarding school administration team—consisting of Sandra Werner, Ina Block, and Maike Friauf, the boarding school’s accountant and executive assistant—along with boarding school director Anke Muszynski.

The fact that the weather cooperated on Welcome Day is evident in the photo showing our seating areas with sun umbrellas, where the parents of our new boarding students took their seats.

You could tell they were thrilled about the great start, as this snapshot taken at a parents’ table shows.

Goodbye to Grades: Physical Education Sets New Standards

News, Sports & Health

Goodbye, numerical grades! At Steinmühle, physical education classes for grades 5 through 8 will soon feature quality certificates instead of grades. This innovative change was recently approved unanimously at the last faculty meeting and marks an important step toward a more modern and multi-perspective approach to physical education at our school, reports Benedikt Hohmann on behalf of the physical education department.

The quality certificates will be introduced gradually starting next school year. Fifth-grade classes will thus be the first to experience this new form of performance assessment in physical education. Steinmühle is working closely with other schools that have already taken this step.

“We are convinced that this innovation will have a positive impact on physical education, the sports culture at Steinmühle, and the motivation of our students,” said Benedikt Hohmann. “We are looking forward to the new opportunities and are eager to see what we will learn from the quality certifications.”

Liam Bacht – a young archer on the path to success

Contests & Awards, News, Sports & Health

During the 2023–24 school year, Liam Bacht was in fifth grade at Steinmühle. But even now, this young student has a hobby that has made him well-known far beyond the school grounds: archery. He took up the sport in the summer of 2022, and he has been passionate about it ever since. With the support of his parents, Liam trains regularly at his archery club’s grounds and shows tremendous dedication.

Seventh Place at the “Vegas Shoot”

This dedication is paying off, as Liam is already competing in numerous tournaments. In an interview, he explained that the tournaments are held at various levels—from district and state competitions to Germany-wide and Europe-wide tournaments, as well as world championships. He is particularly proud of his victory at the Hesse state level, where he won the gold medal by an impressive margin of 30 rings.

But Liam doesn’t just think locally—he’s taking his bow and arrow out into the world. A highlight of his career so far was competing in an international tournament in the U.S. He traveled to the U.S. with his parents, where he faced off against about 80 of the world’s best archers and ultimately achieved an outstanding seventh-place finish—a success that Liam and his family are rightly proud of.

The venue where Liam competed in an archery tournament in the U.S. is the South Point Hotel, Casino & Spa in Las Vegas, Nevada. That’s where the “Vegas Shoot” takes place every year—one of the largest and most prestigious indoor archery events in the world. The competition attracts participants from all over the world, including many talented archers like Liam. The venue is located in the southwest part of Las Vegas and offers an impressive space for the competitions and accompanying activities.

There, he also met the German national team, which made him pretty excited. Meeting the top athletes and experiencing the international atmosphere were a special experience for Liam. Despite his nerves, he demonstrated his skills and ultimately finished in an outstanding seventh place. This already ranks him among the world’s best young archers.

A young athlete with big goals

“Getting to travel to the desert for the competition was a dream come true. It motivated me even more,” Liam says, looking back on his participation in the “Vegas Shoot.” His enthusiasm for archery is palpable—and he knows exactly what makes this sport special. “In archery, it’s important to stay calm. You can learn how to concentrate,” Liam says with conviction.

At just 11 years old, he already has clear goals in mind. He’s especially looking forward to his 13th birthday, because once he turns 13, he’ll finally be able to compete in the German Championships. However, he’ll have to wait a little longer to compete in the European Championships or play in the Bundesliga—those competitions are open only to athletes 18 and older.

“I want to become a pro”

Despite his impressive achievements, Liam has remained just another ordinary student in his class. His classmates are happy for him and regularly congratulate him whenever he wins another tournament. “For them, my success has almost become the norm,” Liam says with a smile. With his long blond hair and determined demeanor, he’s a standout not only on the tournament court but also at school.

One of Liam’s favorite subjects is German, taught by his teacher Frank Wemme. It was Frank who encouraged Liam to tell the school community about his fascinating hobby. When asked about his plans, Liam says quite clearly, “I want to become a professional.” He knows that the German Armed Forces or the police offer exciting career prospects for elite athletes. If his passion for archery continues, this very path could one day become a reality.

At the moment, Liam Bacht seems to be consistently pursuing his goals. The student trains at least twice a week with his coaching team, consisting of Michael and Judith Icking. With this discipline and support, the odds are good that Liam will achieve his goals. His story impressively demonstrates just how far enthusiasm, perseverance, and strong support can take you. We can’t wait to see what new chapters he’ll write in his athletic career in the future.

Clear the ring for the Glamour Girls Circus!

Art, Music & Theater, News

The audience clapped enthusiastically in time with the music as the 22 children from the 5th and 6th Grade Theater Club marched into the ring to the sound of circus music: clowns, magicians, acrobats, a snake charmer, an escape artist, a belly dancer, circus performers, and even trained foxes with their trainer, along with the director, her assistant, and her makeup artist.

For the next half hour, everyone watched with bated breath as Alfonso, the muscleman, tried to find his place among this group of women, only to be met with rejection at every turn. It wasn’t until he suddenly disappeared that the circus troupe realized they might have been too mean to him.

The Theater Club developed this truly enchanting play on their own over the course of the last school year. Taking the circus as their theme, the children first created characters during the first semester, then improvised short scenes using these characters, and finally developed a storyline based on them. The second semester was then devoted to rehearsing the individual scenes. The students came up with all sorts of creative ideas, ranging from funny clown antics and absurd magic tricks to an impressive choreography for the acrobats. The costumes were also largely put together and procured by the participants themselves.

A truly outstanding performance by these young actresses, which was rewarded at the end of the show with well-deserved applause and calls for an encore.
Nina Merzenich

Faculty Summer Party at Steinmühle: An Evening of Gratitude and Farewells

Events & Celebrations, Former Students & Alumni, News

This year’s Steinmühle School summer festival took on special significance: For the first time since the school and boarding school merged, the festival was celebrated jointly by all staff members. In addition, the 2023–24 school year marked a special milestone in Steinmühle’s history: In May, our educational institution celebrated its 75th anniversary with a week of festivities. These remarkable events presented both emotional and physical challenges for the staff.

Principal Björn Gemmer and Managing Director Dirk Konnertz took the opportunity to extend their heartfelt thanks to all their colleagues. Special thanks were given to the planning team at the Hotel Management School, which was responsible for organizing parts of the celebration that evening.

Those who have passed away leave their own unique mark

As is tradition, the celebration also included a farewell: Several colleagues left Steinmühle at the end of the school year. Among them were Leonie Zapf, an English and German teacher; Florian Portsteffen (physical education and geography); and Moritz Zöckler (English and physical education). Jessica Schuhmann (German and Political Science) and Susann Siegfried (Chemistry and History) also said their goodbyes after completing their teaching internships, heading to Battenberg and Lauterbach, respectively. Marc Kevin Zopf moved to Herborn.

Particularly painful was the departure of Claudia Natterer, who had been teaching German and Ethics at Steinmühle since 2008 and had distinguished herself through her great dedication and her special ability to communicate on an equal footing. She will be working as a university professor in Heidelberg in the future. In their speeches, Ines Vielhaben and Nicole Hohm paid tribute to Claudia Natterer’s dedication, while Kristina Sokoli, on behalf of the German Department Student Council, wished their valued colleague all the best for the future. The staff council, represented by Dr. Rainer Nietzke, also bid her farewell with warm words and best wishes: “We hope you had a good time.”

A warm welcome to our new members!

Steinmühle also welcomed some new additions: Christina Becker has joined the team at the Bilingual Elementary School; psychologist Hanne Wolf moved into an office on campus after the start of the new school year.

At the conclusion of the official portion of the event, Dirk Konnertz addressed the boarding school staff personally, thanking them for their trust since he took over as CEO at the turn of the year and emphasizing the value of their collaboration.

An atmospheric musical performance set the stage for the more relaxed part of the evening, which was also attended by several former teachers: Over a lavish buffet and refreshing drinks, everyone celebrated and looked back on an eventful year—a wonderful tradition that strengthens the sense of community among the faculty.

Instructions for replicating the plus-MINT-Boot project are now available online

Life at Boarding School, News, STEM, Talent Development

With their boat project, Clara Steiner, Luis Gerloni, and Fabian Sotonica from the plus-MINT program at Schule & Internat Steinmühle advanced to the national “Jugend forscht” competition, which took place this year over four days at Germany’s largest science center, Experimenta in Heilbronn (as we reported). Reaching this level marks Steinmühle’s greatest success to date in this field!

You can now also find more information and replicate the platform on our website (https://boatproject.steinmuehle.de/). The first schools in the Marburg-Biedenkopf district and the Central Hesse Student Research Center (SFM) have already expressed interest.

The “Boot Project,” which involves the construction and programming of a low-cost measurement platform for automated water analysis, was carried out in collaboration with Dr. Christoph Reudenbach from the Department of Geography at Philipps University of Marburg.

Marlene Bigeschke from the plus-MINT program also helped build the platform. The project was supervised by the plus-MINT team at Steinmühle, which includes Antje Seel, Dr. Patrick Szabo, and Dr. Jutta Töhl-Borsdorf, who was also present for two days in Heilbronn.

Exploring New Waters—A Personal Reflection on the National “Jugend forscht” Competition in Heilbronn

Contests & Awards, News, STEM, Talent Development

Just making it to the national round of the “Jugend forscht” competition is something special in itself. That’s quite an achievement! Our “MINTies”—Steinmühle boarding students Fabian Sotonica, Luis Gerloni, and Clara Steiner—have actually done just that. All three attend our boarding school as part of the plus-MINT program. Fabian Sotonica looks back on this amazing event from the second semester. What does he wish for? You get three guesses…

It’s an impressive sight as you ride the escalator down into the exhibition hall: a bustling crowd of young researchers, parents, and chaperones—107 projects with 175 participants. Our booth was located a little further back in the Earth and Spatial Sciences section, number 51. Along the way, you could already see some of the other projects, which, thanks to their uniqueness, size, or significance, made it clear that this was where the competition’s finals were taking place.

We had until the afternoon to travel there and set up. That turned out to be necessary, since it turned out that our Raspberry Pi (microcomputer)—the “brain” of our measurement platform—had been damaged and was no longer working (properly). Fortunately, we were able to turn to the “Jupas” (young researcher mentors), who had accompanied us throughout the four days. Thanks to them, we were able to borrow one of the Raspberry Pis from the Maker Lab there. Their extensive help with all our questions and needs was an unexpected but wonderful introduction to Experimenta, the science center in Heilbronn.

After that, we checked into our rooms at the youth hostel—where we were staying—or rather, at the hotel, though there wasn’t really any difference in quality between the two. On the way to the hostel, we were able to enjoy the beautiful view of the green banks of the Neckar. The evening concluded with a delicious dinner at Experimenta, as well as workshops and presentations at the “Science Dome” on topics such as the Apollo 13 mission.
Project Presentation in No Time
On the second day, things got serious, as the jury interviews were scheduled following a brief briefing (which took place every morning). Each project had two separate jury teams, to whom they had to present their project in 5 minutes before moving on to a 25-minute interview. Outside of these sessions, participants could visit the Experimenta exhibition or relax in the Jufo Lounge. The evening was spent at Campus Founders, where a workshop on starting a startup was presented after dinner.
Search for a spot for the live demo
On Saturday, we had the opportunity to speak with juries from other fields—if they were interested—to prepare our booth for the public, or to evaluate the other projects. In addition to the scheduled photo shoot for our booth, however, we spent a good portion of the time looking for a suitable spot on the Neckar River where we could launch our platform for a live demonstration. But we were unsuccessful: heavy rain and high water levels blocked the few accessible points. At noon, we walked to the “Harmonie” event hall, where the awards ceremony would take place on Sunday. There, we had lunch and went over the ceremony’s schedule.
After we returned, the public exhibition began, and a surprisingly large number of alumni—that is, former participants—took part. During the exhibition, we were able to get brief feedback from our judges at specific times.
After a lively, interesting, but also exhausting exchange with the visitors, we took buses to “RedBlue,” an InterSport event hall where the special awards ceremony took place. Interwoven with the various courses of the meal and the entertainment (the drum group “Bounce”), groups of projects and award presenters were called to the stage. About halfway through, it was our turn: “Award for Original Work in the Field of Geosciences,” sponsored by the German Geological Society – Geological Association.
Afterward, the dance floor opened up and the evening ended with a party, while a regular shuttle service took people back to their accommodations either earlier or, at the latest, by 2 a.m.
Great New Friends
Sunday was the shortest day: another exhibition was held for the (honored) guests of the awards ceremony to give them a chance to get acquainted before the ceremony began.
While the winners in each category from 5th to 2nd place were announced all at once, the national champions were presented individually on stage. Each also received an impressive laudatory speech from the jury. The event also featured a variety of entertainment: European beatboxing champion “Robeat” and “Prof. Bubbles” with his soap bubble tricks provided plenty of variety.
Of course, at the end, we had to take down the booths again. It was a truly wonderful experience, one that involved meeting many great people at all levels and in all areas. I hope and look forward to experiencing this level of competition again.
As a team, we would like to once again express our heartfelt thanks to everyone involved for their extensive and active support, as we could not have carried out this project without their help!

Fabian Sotonica
