6th Grade Mask Project

Archive, News

Masks transform the wearer, deceive the viewer, or offer protection from prying eyes and toxic fumes. Sixth-grade students learned about this and much more regarding the functions and designs of masks, both past and present, through the mask project. Above all, however, they discovered just how much fun it is to build and paint masks with classmates using plaster or cardboard. The small skit presented as part of the project—featuring a mysterious fairy, terrifying superheroes, and bizarre aliens—was the grand finale for everyone.

Steinmühle’s Next Christmas Star

Archive, News

On December 13, the Steinmühle boarding school community held its Christmas party. Under the theme “Steinmühle’s Next Christmas Star,” a colorful program was put together. As part of a talent show, the students showcased their talents to the invited guests. A “panel of experts” guided the audience through the Christmas performances and evaluated their fellow students with plenty of charm and wit.
The students’ presentations were very diverse. They performed various songs for the enthusiastic audience, put on a puppet show and a black-light performance, staged a play, and delivered comedy skits. The program was rounded out by atmospheric instrumental performances.

Afterward, the nearly 200 guests made their way together into the festively decorated dining room. Under the direction of Executive Chef Bernd Schumertl, the Steinmühle kitchen team conjured up a fantastic meal that completely delighted the jubilant Christmas party!

After expressing gratitude to the Steinmühlen team, the Steinmühlen Friends, and the Buurman family, the evening came to a cozy close.

Christmas Concert at the Steinmühle with guests from the Marburg Music School

Archive, News

On December 10, visitors to our Christmas concert were treated to a colorful, diverse program: The well-known groups Wind Instrument Class 6, Grade 6 Swing & Sing Club, Chamber Music Club, the Concert Band and The Suited …also showed their festive side.

The Ruth Schwarz Duo (flute) and Gerhard Baum (guitar) from the Marburg Music School were welcome guests, and they performed a superb piece of chamber music—an Allegretto by Fürstenau.

The following people, in particular, did a great job of creating a festive Christmas atmosphere: Flutes from Wind Instrument Class 6 featuring three traditional Christmas plays, The Chamber Music Club with “How blessed I am to have Jesus” and “A Child Is Born” and the WU Choir with Mr. Wever, who is the “Snowball Fight” and “Winter Wonderland” performed.

The students in the Swing & Sing Club in 6th grade put on a fantastic performance. They’ve already gotten very good at combining singing and dancing to create a successful show.

There are also two surprises worth mentioning: Our violinist’s first singing performance Bodam Lee and the ensemble of singers and musicians Teachers with Berlioz’s “L’adieu des bergers.”

A Long Break to Satisfy Your Hunger

Archive, News

On December 2, OP editor Dennis Siepmann visited the kitchen staff at the Steinmühle.

Head Chef Bernd Schumertl and Julia Heins, who is in charge of public relations at the boarding school, gave an interview on the currently hotly debated topic of “school meals.”
The article appeared on December 12, 2014, under the title “A Long Break to Satisfy Hunger” in the “Besser Esser” series of the Oberhessische Presse. The “Besser Esser” series, which the OP is currently featuring as a special focus, is dedicated to a conscious and enjoyable approach to nutrition.

Advent, Advent…

Archive, News

Every year, the boarding school’s dormitories are aglow with Christmas cheer. In addition to festive decorations in the hallways and common areas, the Advent calendar is, of course, a must.
This year, the Westfalenhaus calendar turned out to be a little bigger than usual… In fact, you could almost call it an “Advent calendar room.” An atmospheric “fire” crackles in the fireplace built especially for this occasion, and the colorful packages are just waiting to be unwrapped by the students. Simply beautiful—hats off to the hardworking Christmas elf and his helpers!

With this in mind, the Steinmühle team wishes everyone a peaceful pre-Christmas season!

2014 Athlete of the Year Award

Archive, News

At the end of every sports season, awards are presented: The Marburg-Biedenkopf district and the city of Marburg honor athletes based on criteria related to their championship achievements, and all successful athletes are eligible for recognition.

The situation is different for the Sports Personality of the Year award, which is sponsored by the Ahrens department store, the OP, the City of Marburg, and the Sparkasse. Here, after a jury has made a preliminary selection, the winner is determined by who can garner the most votes from their fans. The school community is pleased that this year’s four nominated athletes all have a clear connection to Steinmühle:

  1. Lucas Schäfer, a former student and highly successful rower at RuS Steinmühle, was nominated for the “Athlete of the Year” . He has won national championships and is a member of the national team.
  2. Nathalie Pohl was named “Athlete of the Year” in the “Athlete of the Year” . The former Steinmühlen student placed third in the “New World Harbour Race” in Hong Kong, among other achievements.
  3. Philipp Leo Mengel (12th grade) helped his volleyball team make the leap to the 2nd Bundesliga this year and is in the running for “Youth Athlete of the Year” .
  4. Our rowing coach, Martin Strohmenger, is up for a vote among the coaches. The coach, who has enjoyed success for many years, also guided several of his rowers to the podium last year. He would have earned the title “Coach of the Year” .

Athlete of the Year 2

Here’s how it works: Anyone who wants to have a say in the 2014 Sports Personality of the Year vote can either use the OP forms or vote online:

Top Rock City 2014 on November 29 in Frankfurt

Archive, News

On November 29, Mr. Wiggles & Haters Make Me Laugh presented Top Rock City 2014 at the Kunstverein Familie Montez, right next to the Honsell Bridge in Frankfurt. Of course, the boarding students from Steinmühle couldn’t miss it.
The dance competition—or “Top Rock Battle”—kicked off with an open Q&A session. The guest speaker was none other than hip-hop legend Mr. Wiggles from the Bronx. He answered questions from fans who had traveled to the event on topics such as hip-hop, dance history, and, of course, Top Rock.
“You could actually say that Top Rock is the original form of breakdancing —a subgenre of the dance style that had already developed in the 1970s, long before anyone thought of acrobatic dance moves,” explains Kevin Albancando, who organized the evening together with his colleagues from the Frankfurt hip-hop crew “Dope Roc.”
After the discussion and storytelling session, the dancers battled it out at the highest level and impressed the audience with their spectacular moves. At the after-show party, the students from Steinmühle also grooved and rocked out in full force.

In the end, everyone agreed: “Top Rock City 2014 was awesome!”

Steinmühlen News Ticker – Boarding School Weekends: November 14–16 and 28–30

Archive, News

The boarding school weekend from November 14–16 kicked off on Friday with the Steinmühlen soccer tournament. With plenty of determination and passion, the two boarding school teams took the field and played exciting and entertaining matches against the four other teams. The 11-player team “Classic XI” claimed a well-deserved victory.

***

On November 17, the boarding school’s students who are outdoor sports enthusiasts were treated to a special highlight: they attended the EOFT—European Outdoor Film Tour— near Solms/Oberbiel. The tennis hall, which had been converted into a movie theater specifically for this event, was very well attended. The screening featured spectacular footage of top athletes from the worlds of outdoor sports and adventure.

***

On November 14, the residents of Hessenhaus paid a visit to the popular Swedish furniture giant. After an extensive shopping trip, the students returned to the Steinmühle and took on the challenge of assembling the individual parts into a handsome piece of furniture. With their new purchases, they decorated their rooms entirely according to their personal tastes.

***

The boarding school’s Christmas party will take place on December 13, 2014, and boarding school students and their families are cordially invited to attend. To ensure that the dining hall looks inviting and festive again this year, the boarding school community spent Sunday working on “Christmas decorations” and meticulously folding hundreds of napkins into little works of art.

***

On November 29, the boys from Stammhaus and Mühle held their joint house party in the boarding school’s tea room. In addition to plenty of treats, “sports” were the main focus of the evening: they took turns challenging each other to pool matches or played PlayStation together.

We’re making a movie!

Archive, News

A mood film is currently being produced under the working title “What’s Steinmühle Like?” under the direction of Pascal Lotz and Julia Heins. Pascal Lotz called the Steinmühle boarding school his second home for six years and successfully graduated from high school this year. He has long dreamed of a career as a director. In addition to the standard application materials, a portfolio is, of course, required for admission to a film school.
Together with Julia Heins, who is responsible for public relations and marketing at the boarding school, Pascal Lotz developed the idea for the film about Steinmühle and wrote the screenplay. The first days of filming took place from November 26 to December 1 at the Steinmühle.
The boarding school community is very much looking forward to presenting the finished film on our website in the new year!
