Students from Steinmühlen Win Prizes in the “Jugend Forscht” Competition

Archive, News

The 2017 “Jugend Forscht” regional competition took place in February in Lollar at Bosch-Thermotechnik (formerly Buderus). For the first time, two groups from Steinmühle participated and immediately achieved very good results. The groups had to present their projects to a jury at an exhibition booth they had designed themselves.
The girls won second place in the technology category, while the boys took second place in chemistry and the special prize for environmental technology (worth €50).

Problems with the microfleece. A group of girls who are part of the “WU Forschen” program (grades 8–9) at Steinmühle under the guidance of Dr. Töhl-Borsdorf participated in the “Jugend forscht” competition for teens aged 15 and older: Nelly Endres (8b), Lea Marko (8a), and Flûte Seifart (9b). Their topic was: “Microfleece—Does Superfleece Fail Even When Washed?”

The starting point was the observation that microfleece fabrics are very common in Germany. They’re cozy, but unfortunately they get dirty pretty quickly. What can you do when these items aren’t as soft and cozy after washing, and using fabric softener isn’t always the solution? What works quite well for terry cloth towels is, unfortunately, only partially effective with microfleece.
To verify that these weren’t just subjective impressions, Nelly, Lea, and Flûte built a device that can measure the “softness” of a fleece fabric and provide other insights into what kinds of washing processes preserve the “softness” of microfleece. The students also examined the fleece samples under a microscope and investigated how the texture of microfleece changes as a result of different washing processes.
In the end, the students were able to report:

“In this project, we succeeded in developing a machine and a method to measure the ‘softness’ of microfleece. Other findings include that microfleece should not be washed at very high temperatures, that the use of fabric softener is generally not recommended as it causes the fibers to ‘stick together,’ and that adding vinegar results in a very good softness rating.”

Expensive and cheap types of water. A group of students from Dr. Töhl’s GuFi course took part in the “Schüler experimentieren” competition. This is the junior division of “Jugend forscht.” The participants were sixth-graders Morten Köhler, Finn-Jonas Posingies, and Joshua Wieder. They were the youngest team in the competition. With their experiments, they wanted to find out:
Is premium water really better than discount store water? The students explained their research question:

“When we tested various tap water and river water samples for their components, we came up with the idea of analyzing mineral waters. We wondered whether the expensive premium mineral waters are really better or healthier than cheap discount store waters. To do this, we tested various water samples for different components (nitrate, nitrite, phosphate, etc.) that aren’t listed on the label. Our goal was to determine whether it’s worth spending so much money on mineral water. And here’s what we found: Overall, it’s fair to say that the price differences are only partially justified. Cheap mineral water can be good (tegut) or rather poor (Quellbrunn), but even expensive water sometimes has a higher nitrate content than discount store water, which isn’t exactly ideal. However, we cannot make a definitive assessment because we were unable to test for other critical substances (e.g., heavy metals such as arsenic, radioactive uranium) or residues of pesticides or bacteria.”

Step by Step Toward the City Championship

For the fourth time, the Marburg School Chess Championships will be held at the Steinmühle

It has been clear since at least February 2, 2017, that chess in Marburg is no longer an exclusive game, but is instead experiencing a resurgence and enjoying popularity among many people. On that day, the fourth Marburg School Chess Championship took place at the Steinmühle. With well over 50 participating students from ten schools in Marburg, the tournament was bigger and more exciting than ever before. In addition to the number of participants, this was due above all to the diverse field of competitors. Students ranging from elementary school through high school were in attendance, searching the chessboard for combinations, traps, threats, and the best next move. Once again, the competition was conducted in a very sportsmanlike manner throughout, and special mention must be made of the elementary school students, who mustered the courage to compete against the others despite the sometimes significant age difference.

The tournament was held in cooperation with SK Marburg 1931/72 e.V. and the Steinmühle. Daniel Allig, who heads the chess club at Steinmühle, once again organized this tournament in an exemplary manner: nothing fazes him, and he always keeps everything under control—especially since the unexpected increase in the number of participants presented particular challenges.

In the end, after five exciting rounds, there were several deserving winners, as the final standings were determined in two age groups. In many cases where players were tied on points, the results were decided by the narrowest of margins through special tiebreakers. The overall winner—and thus also the winner in his age group—was Dimitri Schuster (7th grade) from the Martin Luther School, who was the only player that day to win all of his games. The top elementary school student was Samuel Opitz, who even managed to finish in a strong 15th place overall. The Marburg Chess Club awarded medals to all participants and invited them to the club’s training sessions. Trophies were awarded to the top three players in each age group.

The Steinmühle fielded a strong team of 18 players. However, they narrowly missed out on the medal positions. In Age Group 1, Finn Krausch (7a) finished fifth and Urs Seifart (7c) seventh. In Age Group 2, Nikolas Becker (6b) finished fifth, Robin Tatje (5c) seventh, Julian Röser (5b) eighth, and Adriano Doimo (5b) ninth.

Age Group 1 (7th–13th grade):

Dimitri Schuster (Martin Luther School, 7th grade) – 5 points

Alexander Hein (Emil-von-Behring School, 9th grade) – 4.5 points

Roman Qayumi (Carl-Strehl-Schule, 12th grade) – 4.5 points

Age Group 2 (Elementary School – 6th Grade):

Nico Siemon (Otto-Ubelohde School, 6th grade) – 4 points

Christian Uhde (Otto-Ubelohde School, 6th grade) – 4 points

Emil Dierkes (Elisabethschule, 6th grade) – 3 points

Ways to Foster a Love of Learning and Happiness at School in the Digital Age

2017 Education Evening with Olaf Axel Burow

Thanks to scientific research, we now know quite a lot about how successful and sustainable learning works and what matters most. However, key structures in schools and many aspects of current teaching methods and pedagogy stem from an outdated conception of learning. Prof. Dr. Olaf Axel Burow illustrated this fundamental problem using clear examples and compelling research findings.

Building on this analysis, Burow presented to an interested and open-minded audience the possible paths toward School 4.0. Citing examples from the German school system, he was able to demonstrate that the future may not be all that far off.

As far as schools are concerned, the future structure of a forward-looking school must incorporate the following aspects digitalization, the new role of teachers, networking, changes in the teaching and learning environment, and a focus on health, democratization/participation and happiness-oriented approach as defining factors.

As far as the students are concerned, the key will be to specific talent profile to do justice to each individual and thus make learning an enjoyable activity that sustains the joy of learning and fosters happiness at school. Standardized graduation profiles and assessments of knowledge levels should be critically examined.

It was an educational evening that sparked a lively exchange of ideas between the speaker, parents, colleagues, and representatives from the teacher-training programs at the University of Marburg and the teacher-training college—especially afterward, during a light reception with refreshments provided by WU Partyservice.

Sustainable Choices in Everyday Life

Interactive Theater Evening

Is it still okay to go on vacation after everything we know about climate change? How do I make decisions when shopping for sustainable food? How could I optimize my personal energy footprint? These are pressing questions we face every day. After all, even those who know everything about climate and ecology still have to make choices. These everyday decision-making situations were explored during an interactive theater evening.

This event was led by Dominik Werner, a theater educator from Marburg, with Class 8c and about 30 other visitors.

Essentially, using the example “Blueberries from Chile?” as a starting point, the goal was to use role-playing scenarios to raise awareness and promote transparency about how our conscious and unconscious decisions are made and how they might be optimized.

It was still too early to tell whether it would help, but everyone had fun.

There Was Music in the Air: Open Stage 2017

Archive, News

A surprisingly large crowd turned out for the second “Open Stage” event . And on a cold winter evening, the program warmed everyone up: there were solo instrumentalists performing contemporary and classical music, powerful vocalists, and jazz ensembles playing well-loved standards.

The youngest musicians, Ben Luis Peters and Nina Simmer (both in 5b), performed “Kleiner Länder,” a catchy four-hand piano piece by the well-known German music educator Anne Terzibatschitsch.

For her solo piece, Nina Simmer also chose a work by a contemporary composer: “Nuvole bianche” by Ludovico Einaudi.

Anna Steinfeld (6b) displayed remarkable confidence at the piano as she performed “Amelie” by Yann Thiersen.

The three musicians from grades 5 and 6 thus ensure a successful start.

During the last musical events of the school year, it had already become clear that Steinmühle once again has outstanding singers who can captivate an audience. Jolene Junge (Class 11a) performed “Back to Black” by Amy Winehouse—a challenging song—with astonishing ease.

Johanna Sodmann (12d) wowed the audience with Pink’s “Just Give Me a Reason.” Sonja Mecke (11a) sang “Closer” by The Chainsmokers, accompanied by Arthur Laux (11a), who was in high spirits. The progressive house track performed by the two 11th-grade students was met with enthusiastic applause from the audience.

Frank Wemme (SL) and Tom Herfert (9c) demonstrated with “Round Midnight” by jazz pianist Thelonious Monk that a piano piece can also be perfectly suited for a performance with guitar and saxophone. Together with Samuel Ruff (9b) on trombone and Marit Winterstein (7c) on euphonium, the two performed “Lullaby of Birdland,” a mainstream jazz classic, with remarkable confidence.

Fynn Konnertz (9b) amazed the audience not only with his guitar playing but also with his technical skills. He played several“improvisations” with remarkable richness of sound by using his looper as a real-time overdubber—that is, he was able to add his previously played solo part as an accompaniment to his performance.

The Classical Music section was kicked off by “guest student” Alexander Despa. The eighth-grader impressed the audience with Chopin’s ever-popular “Nocturne, Op. 9, No. 2.”

Bodam Lee (10b), a successful participant in many music competitions, had once again set her sights on something special with her violin . She performed the second movement, “Romance,” from Henryk Wieniawski’s “Violin Concerto No. 2 .” The audience was impressed.

For several months now, Jieni Zhang (10b) has been a valuable addition to our school’s classical music department. Her performance of the “Marche Funèbre” (Funeral March) was the second Chopin highlight of the evening. Jieni’s piano playing perfectly captured the solemnity of the piece throughout.

Nelly Endres (8b) brought the evening to a successful close with a modern classic on the piano. She played Gershwin’s “I Got Rhythm” at a tempo that had everyone moving along …

mecodia AKADEMIE educates students and teaches parents

Once again, a representative from mecodia AKADEMIE visited Steinmühle to host various events on the topic of “Generation Online – Young People’s Media Worlds” .

This year, Mr. Felix Ebner served as mecodia’s expert speaker. He is a long-time employee and co-founder of the academy. He proved to be a knowledgeable expert on the current online scene and demonstrated his skill as a facilitator, engaging both parents and students. This event was sponsored by Sparkasse Marburg-Biedenkopf.

Even though the current generation of parents of our young students can certainly be described as “digital natives” from the very beginning, the online world of their children still seems quite foreign to many of them. In his presentation, Mr. Ebner succeeded in providing the parents with some basic knowledge.

Topics included:

– The “normal” daily online routine for teenagers,

– the spread of new services,

– the world of YouTube with Gronkh, ApeCrime, LeFloid, and Bibi,

– FOMO: Fear of missing out, or the fear of missing something,

– WhatsApp,

– real life in the media world,

– Snapchat,

– Sexting and

– the new possibilities in the generational conflict.

The workshops with the students focused primarily on:

– online security,

– the protection of identity and

– avoiding unwanted online consequences, such as cost traps.

Feedback from both parents and students was consistently positive, and for anyone who couldn’t attend, here are a few helpful links:

A Festive Start to the Holidays

Archive, News

On the last day of school before the Christmas break, grades 5 and 6 attended the Christmas play “Ali Baba and the 40 Thieves” at the Hessian State Theater; the 7th graders went to the movies; and students in grades 8 – 12 gathered in the Forum during the third period for the end-of-year celebration, where their principals shared some words of wisdom and the StoneMill House Band put on another great performance. Among other songs, the newly formed vocal group—featuring Talea Funk—performed “Last Christmas ” in such a way that we can already look forward to the band’s next performance on January 23, 2017.

A Contemplative End-of-Year Celebration for the Faculty

Archive, News

On the second-to-last day of school before the Christmas break, the faculty traditionally holds its Christmas party. And many, many people attended. In addition to the current teachers, alumni and—to our delight—a large number of colleagues from the non-teaching staff also participated, helping to create a festive atmosphere. A strong contingent of former principals was represented by Mr. Teichler, Mr. Müller, Ms. Kettner, and Mr. Jöllenbeck. In their speeches, Principals Gemmer and Holly addressed the largely positive current situation and thanked the dedicated staff.

Mr. Teichler, principal from 1981 to 1991, led the tribute to the colleagues who had passed away in recent months: Ms. Györkös, Ms. Kustosch, Mr. Schade, and Mr. Györkös. Each of them had made valuable contributions to Steinmühle in their own way and helped the school thrive.

2,000 € – Donation for Ugandan war orphans

It wasn’t the first time that Ms. Kvachko’s Class 8b had held a fundraiser at the Fall Festival for the St. Francis Orphanage in Rakai carried out. Even when they presented the first donation to Mr. Komm and Mr. Hedwig in March 2015, the students solemnly promised: “We’ll keep collecting!”

At this first meeting, representatives of the Rakai Initiative reported on the war orphans project in Uganda, which has been operating since October 2010 as the St. Francis Rakai Initiative e.V. and provides care and education to approximately 400 children. With just 3 euros, a child can be fed for a month. The St. Francis Home was founded in 1988 on the initiative of the late Mr. and Mrs. Katende. In Marburg, the initiative is being carried on by Thomas Komm, who served as head of the Office of International Relations at Philipps University of Marburg until 2008, and Armin Hedwig, who taught at the Stiftsschule in Amöneburg near Marburg.

By now, the students understand just how much their donations are needed. They have learned about Uganda’s history and the projects of the St. Francis Rakai Initiative. They are aware of the daily realities and unique challenges of life in crisis-stricken Uganda. They fully understand that war orphans, above all, need support.

The class achieved an extraordinary fundraising success at the 2016 Fall Festival: They raised 640 € through food sales and other activities, and the school’s Interact Club contributed an additional 110 € from its own fundraising efforts. Impressed by the students’ dedication, our school association chairman, Egon Vaupel, visited a family in Marburg known for their generosity, who were willing to match the amount of 1,250 € to bring the total to 2,000 €.

An overall encouraging result!

An Enthusiastic Audience at the 2016 Winter Concert

Archive, News

Actor and singer Artur Molin supports the high school choir

This year, we were able to secure an exceptional guest for the Christmas concert: Artur Molin, who, at the end of a remarkable concert featuring many groups and ensembles, took the performance to the next level with his performance.

But first things first: The winter concert in the packed Forum opened with a performance by the 6th-grade wind ensemble, conducted by A. Jamin. It’s amazing to see the confidence and sense of rhythm the group displays after about 15 months of practice.

The Swing & Sing girls were delighted to receive spontaneous applause. They had rehearsed a choreography set to lively and catchy tunes that had everyone in the hall tapping their feet. The group was led by two 8th-grade students who had themselves danced with “Swing & Sing” not too long ago.

Both the concert band and the chamber music club demonstrated their usual high standard, with the chamber musicians “taking on” the jazz standard “Take Five,” a performance that was met with enthusiastic applause.

Students in 10th grade performed a routine they had learned in music class: rhythmic thigh-tapping combined with gentle body turns made a strong impression on the audience and encouraged them to join in.

And then there was the upper-level choir, accompanied by Artur Molin. The students know the artist Artur Molin from his appearances on the TV music show “The Voice of Germany,” while the parents know him as an actor and singer at the Hessian State Theater in Marburg. Artur Molin not only wowed the audience with a voice that pushed the Forum’s sound system to its limits; his spontaneous and sensitive interaction with the choir and our female singers demonstrated what solid vocal training and years of stage experience can achieve. The enthusiasm among the singers and the audience was overwhelming.

This doesn’t have to be the last time we work with Artur Molin. Perhaps the partnership between the Steinmühle and the Marburg Theater will lead to further opportunities for collaboration …
