Summer Festival Attendees Celebrated a Baptism and a Farewell Before the Trip to Rio

Archive

It was a successful evening: About 150 guests from the club’s wider community and the local school attended this year’s summer festival hosted by the Rudern und Sport Steinmühle Marburg club. With pleasant summer temperatures setting the mood, the athletes and visitors took the opportunity to bid farewell to RuS top athlete Lucas Schäfer as he headed to the Olympic Games in Rio. However, Schäfer still had one official duty to perform: Under the watchful eyes of the young rowers, invited local dignitaries, and public figures, he christened a new coxless racing double scull from the Berliner Bootsgesellschaft (BBG)—fittingly named “Carbonara” in reference to its carbon fiber construction. Club leaders, the school administration, and the management of the Steinmühle School Association, as well as representatives of the boarding school, were delighted by the positive response to the convivial event, during which the beverage service, grill masters, and food servers had their hands full.

Student Awards on the Last Day of School

Archive, Uncategorized

At the student awards ceremony on the last day of school, 125 students received certificates in addition to their report cards. During a ceremony hosted by the two student body presidents, Wissah Miran and Jannes Kühn, together with Ms. Fries and Mr. Gemmer, the school honored students who, over the past school year, had shown exceptional dedication or achieved outstanding success in many areas—both in class and, in some cases, outside of school.

In the area of sports, 18 athletes were honored for their success at championships and special competitions. In addition, Steinmühle’s tennis and soccer teams competed in the Hesse finals of the JtfO, where they placed 4th and 6th, respectively—an achievement worthy of recognition.

It is also encouraging that 27 female students were able to earn special language diplomas from DELF and CAMBRIDGE.

Seven students received awards and recognition in the fields of music, theater, and art. This year, Bodam Lee (9b) was particularly successful, taking third place in the national finals of “Jugend musiziert,” and Nelly Endres (7b) was a prize winner at the Weilburg Piano Competition.

It is particularly significant for the school that, for several years now, Steinmühlen students have consistently achieved success in various math competitions. This year, 13 students were honored for their outstanding achievements in Pangea, the Math Olympiad, and the Kangaroo Competition, led by Jan Audretsch (6b), who placed fourth nationwide in Pangea.

The members of the Children’s and Youth Parliament, the leaders and some members of the school-affiliated Interact Rotary Club, and the third-place winners of the Move-it Integration Competition were particularly recognized for their community service.

26 sports on offer during the sports project days

Archive, Uncategorized

In the days leading up to report card distribution, all students had the chance to really let off some steam and try out new sports. In addition to the usual sports—basketball, soccer, rowing, cycling, and tennis—the physical education department also offered some unique activities, such as Ultimate Frisbee, wakeboarding, fencing, rock climbing, the Rhönrad, lacrosse, and much more.

As was the case last time, this program was made possible through collaboration with experts from many Marburg-based clubs and sports students from the University of Marburg. The sports project days at the end of the school year were supported by 15 external coaches, whom the school thanked during a small barbecue at the end of the second day.

2016 School Sports Day at Georg-Gaßmann Stadium

Archive, Uncategorized

In recent years, the Physical Education Department had incorporated the “Bundesjugendspiele” into a school sports festival for the lower and middle grades, and this year it was clear that Michael Neirich and his Physical Education Department had succeeded in developing an attractive event with this concept.
After warming up and stretching together, the students were able to compete in the running and jumping events for the Bundesjugendspiele and determine the fastest sprinters in each class.
The classes had a lot of fun during the closing tournament, which featured dodgeball (5th grade), soccer (6th grade), basketball (8th grade), and softball (9th grade).
For the 7th-grade students, Sports Day took place on the Lahn River near the boathouse. Rowing coach Stromenger had put together an exciting program for them.

2016 Summer Concert

Archive, Uncategorized

On July 11, 2016, the summer concert took place at the Steinmühle. The evening began with the 6th and 7th-grade wind ensembles and the concert band, conducted by Stephan Reissig, Andreas Jamin, and Ulrike Wilmsmeyer. This was followed by individual pieces performed by the three groups—BK 6, BK 7, and the concert band—all of whom played at a high level. The evening continued with a piano solo by Arthur Laux. A special highlight of the program was a group of seventh-graders. A few months earlier, the school’s booster club had purchased bagpipes, which seventh-grade students used under the direction of Daniel Sans and Thomas Zöller, performed with a certified bagpiper from Frankfurt. The Swing & Sing club set the mood, thrilling the audience with two dance and vocal performances that had everyone clapping along. Also performing was the 6th-grade choir, whose students had taken their first steps toward formal choral training over the course of the year. They were accompanied on their pieces by the Chamber Music Club under the direction of Frank Wemme. The finale featured the choir together with the bagpipers, the chamber music group, and the Swing & Sing Club. They performed the song “Hanging Tree” from the movie “The Hunger Games” and received thunderous applause.

The Steinmühlen cap is here!

Archive, News

In response to numerous requests from our students—and just in time for the break—we’ve had a Steinmühlen cap produced.
The result is truly impressive: a high-quality, stylish snapback cap with an embroidered STM logo.
The cap’s logo was designed by Sarah Wolny and Bennet Scherer as part of a project for the advanced art class. Thank you so much for your great work!
The Steinmühlen cap is now available for purchase at the school office for 15.- €.

The Steinmühlen tennis team placed fourth at the state finals of the “Youth Training for the Olympics” competition in Neu-Isenburg

Archive

After two schools canceled their participation in the state finals at the last minute—much to the surprise of the organizers—only four schools ended up competing for the Hessian title in Neu-Isenburg in a round-robin format.

Many of the matches in the state finals were of a remarkably high standard, as students from the Hesse squad also competed for the schools from Darmstadt and Wiesbaden.

Already in their first match against the Gutenbergschule in Wiesbaden , it became clear that our team had little chance of success at this level. We lost all the singles and doubles matches by relatively wide margins. The significant difference in skill level during this match made it difficult for some team members to stay motivated for the next two matches.

The Steinmühlen team also stood no chance against the eventual champion from Darmstadt. However, due to the tournament format, there was still a chance in the final game against the Wigbertschule from Hünfeld . The three doubles matches alone showed that these were two evenly matched teams. The girls’ doubles team of Laura Hertl and Nina Horn went on to secure the first points for the Steinmühlen team. Despite trailing 2–4 after the three doubles matches, the match could still have been turned around with three wins in the singles, but unfortunately, only Nina Horn managed to secure a victory in her singles match, meaning the team missed out on the bronze medal.

As is often the case at a state championship, many top-level students from Hesse competed in Neu-Isenburg. Therefore, despite finishing in 4th place, our team can be proud of its performance in its first appearance at “Youth Trains for the Olympics” .

Transportation Forum on July 1, 2016

Archive, Uncategorized

This year, the “Energy Project” for 10th graders has become the “Transportation Project.”

The school had organized a panel discussion for July 1 on the topic “Transportation Policy in Marburg—Breaking New Ground.”

For several years now, the topic of “Economics and Ecology” has been analyzed by all students in the introductory phase at Steinmühle as part of their Politics and Economics course. To promote a better understanding, students examine the inherent tension between ecology and economics using a concrete example. This year, the classes chose the topic: “Transportation Policy in Marburg—Breaking New Ground.”

It has recently been established that mobility is generally a key location factor for businesses, an important criterion in people’s choice of where to live, and also a major determinant of air quality in cities.

In this context, the panel discussion gave the students the opportunity to learn about fundamental aspects of Marburg’s transportation policy and to discuss current transportation policy in Marburg with experts.

The following people were on the panel:

Dr. Spies [Mayor]

Jan-Bernd Röllmann [Marburg Working Group on Local Government and Economic Issues (AFK)]

Hannes Kleinhenz [Citizens’ Initiative for the B3a Urban Highway in Marburg]

Wolfgang Schuch [ADFC Marburg-Biedenkopf]

Christian Großmann [Werbekreis Nordstadt e.V.]

Christoph Rau [Stadtwerke Marburg Consult GmbH & Marburger]

Rowing for 7th Graders at Lake Eder

Archive, Uncategorized

In July, the 7th-grade students spent two eventful days at Lake Eder.

Ideal rowing weather, a full lake, and great accommodations—the Marburg University boathouse—provided excellent conditions for the young rowers’ training.

Sports were the focus of this trip well into the late evening hours. Participants worked hard to hone their skills in the various boat classes, and there was plenty of time for soccer and volleyball as well.

The “dream team”—comprising rowing coach Martin Strohmenger, Bundesliga rower Johannes Birkhahn, and head chef Theo Nauheimer, with support provided alternately by students from the University of Marburg and the homeroom teachers—ensured that the week went off smoothly and harmoniously.
