WK III District Basketball Tournament

It’s all about taking part. With this motto in mind, the youngest basketball players from Steinmühle took the court at the district finals for the Marburg-Biedenkopf district.

Right from the first competition—an all-around event—they had to concede the lead to the other participating teams, which meant that in the actual tournament, they had to start every match trailing by 0–6 points.

However, this did not matter in the final standings against the top three teams, as they proved to be superior.

But in the match for fourth place against Philippinum II, a win was what we needed. Our coach and team manager, Theo Nauheimer, managed to get the team fired up one last time for this final game—and it paid off: Despite trailing 0–6 early on, the Steinmühlen students managed to take a 12–10 lead by halftime, which the boys extended to 22–13 by the end of the game.

Public Building Committee Meeting on the Plans for the New Steinmühle Building

On Wednesday, September 28, 2016, the City of Marburg, in collaboration with the Steinmühle School Association, held a public information event at the Steinmühle Forum. During this event, the Building Department, with the support of our planning firm “Schöne Aussichten,” presented the plans for the construction of a new middle school building for the school association.

To this end, the nonprofit association has acquired its own land for the first time in its more than 50-year history—the meadow in front of the Forum. The need for a new building was emphatically explained by school principals Björn Gemmer and Bernd Holly, as well as Egon Vaupel, the chairman of the school association; Dirk Konnertz, the managing director, presented the plans to date. In addition to the proposed changes to the land-use and zoning plans, the design by the architectural firm Oesterle was also presented.

Mayor Kahle explained why the city of Marburg would support this project, and Cappel’s local council chairman, Wahlers, announced the Cappel local council’s approval. Although Kahle, the city’s commissioner for construction, considered the proposed start date of summer 2017 to be quite ambitious, overall, the impression after the event was that, in principle, nothing stands in the way of the construction project and that there will be room for another graduating class by the time the transition to the G9 system is complete.

A Celebrity Visit to Actor Sigmar Solbach

First he lived in the Bremerhaus, then in the mill, and later he felt at home on the stage: Actor Sigmar Solbach is surely one of the most prominent alumni of Steinmühle! After the popular actor—known for TV series such as “Ein Winter, der ein Sommer war,” “Das Erbe der Guldenburgs,” “Diese Drombuschs,” “Traumschiff,” and the series “Dr. Stefan Frank —The Doctor Women Trust,” had recently visited the Steinmühle to celebrate the 50th anniversary of his high school graduation, interested 11th- and 12th-grade students, accompanied by teachers Nicole Hohm, Steffen Ullwer, and Principal Björn Gemmer, to make a return visit to Frankfurt’s Fritz Rémond Theater im Zoo. There, the actor—a native of South Westphalia—played the composer George Frideric Handel in the comedy “Possible Encounter.” The play depicted what might have happened if Handel had met his contemporary colleague Johann Sebastian Bach back then—though in reality, that never happened. “Mögliche Begegnung”—the title was equally fitting for what awaited the group of visitors from Marburg after the performance: Sigmar Solbach took plenty of time for a casual chat with the theater-loving teenagers, who had prepared questions for the “celebrity.” With insights into how an aspiring actor can best draw attention to themselves today, joyful moments, his passion for the profession, his top roles —as well as personal insights into the actor’s daily life—the group set off for home after the pleasant meeting with the star, who had personally suggested the visit to Frankfurt. The unanimous opinion: a likable person, a role model—and completely down-to-earth.

Weekend Special: A Visit to the Eckenhagen Monkey and Bird Park

The bright blue sky on October 9 was the perfect invitation for a classic Sunday outing. So off we went—with the car packed full of nine fresh-air enthusiasts, we headed to the Monkey and Bird Park in Eckenhagen, North Rhine-Westphalia.

Here, even (young) adults became kids again on swings, small rides, or the mini Ferris wheel. But the highlight, of course, was the Eckenhagen wildlife. Here, you could have a little chat with the parrot (though he definitely needs to add the word “Moje” to his vocabulary), feed little squirrel monkeys snacks of fruit and vegetables, or let one of the Barbary macaques dance on your nose—almost in the truest sense of the word.

Since the fresh air makes you so hungry, we had a little afternoon snack on the way home before heading back.

Steinmühle Girls’ Soccer Team (Age Group III) at the District Finals of “Youth Trains for the Olympics”

For the first time, a girls’ team from Steinmühle competed in the district soccer tournament, and it was a great start!

 

With Finja Grün, Nelly Endres, and Ana Catalina Pohl, the Steinmühlen team had outstanding players who ensured our team played cohesively and scored goals. In the end, we finished in a solid 4th place, which—given the short preparation time (we were only able to train once for half an hour beforehand)—is definitely a success.

 

About the games:

In the first game against Stiftsschule Amöneburg, the team secured a 2–1 victory thanks to goals by Finja Grün and Ana Catalina Pohl.

In the second game against MPS Hartenrod, Ana Catalina Pohl once again scored the goal that tied the game at 1–1. However, the team lost the game 1–2 after a defensive error.

The third and final group match ended in a narrow 1-0 victory for Gesamtschule Ebsdorfer Grund, which went on to win the group in commanding fashion.

The Steinmühle team reached the semifinals, but in that game they had to concede defeat to the girls from Lahntalschule Biedenkopf. The game was a clear victory for Lahntalschule, which had a very well-coordinated team and went on to win the tournament.

In the match for 3rd and 4th place against Gesamtschule Ebsdorfer Grund, it was clear that our students had expended a great deal of energy through their selfless play in the previous matches and were lacking in concentration. Thus, the 0–3 loss was only to be expected.

Overall, all the players who took the field showed great dedication and had a lot of fun. There is definitely a desire to play together again soon and to field a team again next year without a doubt. Our team was expertly coached by Lothar Potthoff, the former principal of Ebsdorfer Grund Comprehensive School, who now leads the Niederweimar/Haddamshausen sports club.

It’s a real shame: Bernd Schumertl is leaving the Steinmühle

It is with great regret that students and teachers must accept that Mr. Schumertl will no longer be the head chef at the Steinmühle starting in October. After nearly 23 years, he has been looking for new challenges—and has found them.

On September 15, principals Björn Gemmer and Bernd Holly, along with student representative Jannes Kühn, bid farewell to Bernd Schumertl on behalf of the school community. They expressed their regret at his departure and their deep gratitude for his many years of service in the school kitchen.

Schumertl has accomplished a great deal at the Steinmühle:

  • He has made us forget the days when complaining about bad food was a common figure of speech.
  • He has managed to strike the perfect balance between affordable meals and high satisfaction with the menu.
  • He was always genuinely interested in engaging in dialogue with the students.
  • He knew how to streamline the meal-serving process, so that the dining room at the Steinmühle was known for its pleasant and sociable atmosphere.
  • Ultimately, he also received significant recognition “from outside,” including from the German Nutrition Society, which awarded the Steinmühlenküche its Premium Certificate in 2013—making it the first school in Hesse and the second in Germany to receive this honor.

The students and faculty would like to thank him for this and wish him all the best in his future personal and professional endeavors!
