Wrestling Tournament and Youth Cup Tournament at the Steinmühle

Archive, News

Last weekend, the Steinmühle hosted the “
” wrestling tournament and the Youth Cup as part of the ongoing tournament series.

On Saturday, teams from Sterzhausen, Wehrda, and Mengsberg visited
to showcase their skills. Our riders narrowly missed out on the day’s victory in the Youth Cup
but once again secured second place on the podium at
.

On Sunday, the competition continued with the ring tournament. While in the Youth Cup (
), participants are required to complete “only” a dressage test in addition to the theory portion, the ring tournament (
) also requires the young riders (
) to compete in a show jumping competition. Here, too, our
team, led by coach Beate Schridde, secured second place.

The Ring Tournament and Youth Cup Finals will take place on March 17 and 18 in Wehrda
. We’re keeping our fingers crossed for our riders and
wish them lots of fun and success!

Day Trip to Wiesbaden

Archive

The boarding school community set out on a field trip to Wiesbaden to spend the day together there. After a hearty brunch together, we took a tour bus to the state capital, where we first split into small groups to pursue our individual interests. In wintry temperatures, some of us laced up our skates to go ice skating. Some students also took the opportunity to explore the city. Others preferred to stay warm; they visited an exhibition at the Nature and Art Museum or Freudenberg Castle. There, we had the opportunity to sharpen our senses and experience the world in a whole new way—for example, in a “dark café” or a “dark corridor,” as well as in a cold chamber at -20 °C. The Museum of Natural Art featured a special exhibition on mushrooms. For both naturalists and artists, this was an opportunity to view natural objects from a new perspective.

The day ended with a group visit to a trampoline park. The entire boarding school community competed in jumping contests, plunged headfirst into mountains of foam, and navigated various obstacle courses. In addition to stamina, what was needed above all was the courage to face the challenges that lay ahead.

Uninjured, exhausted, and full of new experiences, we set off for Marburg in the evening. That day, we had a lot of fun pushing our limits, gained new experiences and insights, and were able to leave our everyday lives behind.

Carnival spirit with music and creative costumes

Archive, News

In a lively atmosphere and with great enthusiasm, the 5th and 6th graders at Steinmühlen celebrated Fasching again this year. After the 6th period on Altweiberfastnacht, it was time to put on costumes, apply makeup, and—as a class—select two matching costumes for the Carnival Costume Story! The procession of revelers began at 2:00 p.m. Then everyone danced together with the Sing & Swing club, the Carnival costume story was presented, and the Carnival Olympics took place, featuring a biathlon with running and target throwing as well as a three-legged race.
A disco and the much-anticipated Carnival snack, complete with french fries, followed right on the heels of the festivities. WU Sound & Light, led by Sam Kempkes and his team, provided the best music. The teachers not only coordinated the events perfectly but also joined the students in their own creative costumes.

Our riders were successful in Mengsberg as well

Archive

Last Sunday, the female riders from RuS Steinmühle competed in Mengsberg in the second tournament of the “Jugendcup” series.

Just like at the first tournament in Sterzhausen, our riders had to mount unfamiliar horses and ride a dressage test after only a 5-minute warm-up. And once again, there were beaming faces, as the team led by coach Beate Schridde was able to deliver strong performances in both dressage and the theory portion, securing second place!

Congratulations on this amazing achievement!

On Saturday, February 17, 2018, the teams from Sterzhausen, Wehrda, and Mengsberg will be our guests.

Prevention Through the BOB Campaign: Stay Safe with a Blood Alcohol Content of Zero

Archive, News

It’s not just an issue during Carnival season—it’s a year-round problem: drunk driving. Once again this year, the entire 11th-grade class, led by Steinmühlen teachers Nicole Hohm and Heike Rabben-Martin, learned about the dangers as part of the so-called BOB project. For over five years, the Marburg-Biedenkopf Police Regional Traffic Division and the Marburg District Attorney’s Office have been partners in this prevention event. Police Chief Inspector Martin Frank and District Attorney Tina Grün are already a well-established team working together on the workshop.
The BOB campaign is a pillar of the traffic prevention program “www.verkehrssicher-in-mittelhessen.de.” Its primary goal is to reduce serious traffic accidents caused by the influence of alcohol or drugs. The campaign is primarily aimed at first-time drivers aged 18 to 24, as they are disproportionately likely to be involved in such accidents.

Handling Critical Situations

Throughout the morning, the students not only viewed photos of vehicles involved in accidents and watched authentic videos about alcohol-related accidents and their consequences, but they also discussed ways to prevent driving under the influence and how to find solutions in such situations, such as when, for example, a group has relied in vain on one person to abstain from alcohol.
The BOB campaign, symbolized by a yellow keychain, is about reliably taking on the responsibility to drive oneself and passengers home—by mutual agreement and without consuming alcohol—after a group outing to a restaurant or nightclub. The restaurants participating in the BOB campaign support the initiative by offering a free non-alcoholic beverage to the designated driver.
Heike Rabben-Martin described the school event as “not only important for the cause, but also effective in building a relationship between young people and the police. It brings the world into the school,” she said.

Intense silence and upbeat music at “Open Stage”

Archive, News

The musical journey ranged from the splendor of Baroque sounds to whimsical chart-topping pop, and just as versatile as music teacher and concert tenor Daniel Sans proved to be toward the end—appearing as the “Sharp Dressed Man” in a hat and glasses during his Open Stage performance—so too were the diverse performances that evening. Up and down the emotional roller coaster, with musical genres as diverse as they could possibly be—that’s Steinmühle when music is on the cultural agenda.

Those who arrived a little later and still had to “set up” additional rows of chairs were able to admire the evening’s first highlight while standing in awe. Nela Haeberle (Class 6c) and her duet partner Miriam Lange (as a guest) opened the evening and celebrated the beauty of the rich tones of their flutes in a beautifully performed three-movement flute sonata by Georg Philipp Telemann.

Traditionally, the annual “Open Stage” evening is designed to be a small, intimate event. The fact that audience interest turned out to be greater than expected was primarily due to the wide variety of performances. The Music Student Council, with Ulrike Wilmsmeyer, Daniel Sans, and Frank Wemme, had scheduled piano music to follow the opening. Nina Simmer (Class 5b) performed Pachelbel’s famous Canon in D with great composure and confidence, creating a remarkable beauty of sound on the piano. A focused silence also prevailed when Alex Despa (as a guest) performed Mozart’s Theme and Variations with great pianistic confidence and supplemented it with an improvisation of his own—a special challenge that he mastered with ease.

Poetry Slam and Karaoke

But it wasn’t just Telemann, Mozart, and original improvisations that were performed on stage that evening. Ninth-grade students courageously explored situations in which people of all ages can be struck by illness and presented this theme to the audience in the form of a poetry slam. Pauline Fehlinger, Evelyn Damer, and Sandro Pfuhl (Class 9b) prompted the audience to pause for a moment in reflection on the serious subject matter they had brought to life in their texts. Karaoke, on the other hand, is a crowd-pleaser for all age groups. Well aware of this, the hit song “Stitches” by Shawn Mendes was then performed as a contrast, presented as a duet by Anna Katharina Mecke and Chiara Schwarz (Class 7b). Further variety was provided by the confident performance of Flûte Seifart (Class 11b), who first played a rondo by the English composer Henry Purcell with orchestral backing and then presented Pachelbel’s Canon with a different sound in her second piece. Her performance, too, was characterized by tranquility and the quiet flow of the melodies.

After another foray into the world of poetry slam with Tom Marquardt and Finnian Kempkes (Class 9b)—featuring the thought-provoking yet emphatic message “The World is Yours”—it was the bands’ turn. Wearing the outfit mentioned at the beginning, music teacher Daniel Sans took the stage as keyboardist, accompanied by Arthur Laux on drums (Grade 12), saxophonist Tom Herfert (Grade 10c), and his colleague Frank Wemme on electric bass, as they backed the man in the spotlight: Fynn Konnertz (Grade 10b) performed ZZ Top’s “Sharp Dressed Man” (and more) with vocals, lead guitar, and a passionate solo. With a different band lineup, Tom Herfert then gave a remarkable demonstration of his skills as a tenor saxophonist, with roaring themes and a rich, full-bodied solo in “Sax in the City” by Clarence Clemons.

Good Vibes with the Boarding School Band

With so much great music, the evening—which was hosted by Frank Wemme—was bound to end on a high note. What better way to wrap things up than to have the boarding school band perform for the finale? The seven-member group was downright “Radioactive” and in high spirits: With the song of the same name by the U.S. band Imagine Dragons, as well as Pharrell Williams’ number-one hit “Happy,” the audience was sent home in high spirits.

As a token of appreciation, principals Björn Gemmer and Bernd Holly handed out a sweet treat to all the participants. The Sound & Light team (Sam Kempkes (Class 11d) and Samuel Ruff (Class 10b)) had once again done a great job with the lighting and sound quality.

The Steinmühle riders kick off the tournament season on the podium

Archive, News

On January 13, 2018, the RSV Sterzhausen hosted this year’s first Youth Cup tournament. This tournament series places particularly high demands on the young riders, all of whom must ride horses provided by the host club.

The RuS Steinmühle e.V. team handled the task with flying colors and narrowly missed out on the gold medal. In addition to the dressage test—which is ridden and judged individually—a theoretical exam follows afterward.

In the end, just 0.5 points separated our riders, led by Beate Schridde, from victory. They headed home thoroughly satisfied with their second-place finish!

There will be a total of four youth cup tournaments. The tournament here at Steinmühle will take place on February 17 at 2:00 p.m.
