Summer Concert: Another “Full House” at the Forum

Art, Music & Theater, News

At the start of the summer concert at the Forum, only standing room was left—and even those spots were quickly filled. The event, with its many guests, was yet another example in the series of Steinmühle events of just how popular school events are—and how much the Steinmühle community had longed for them during the pandemic restrictions. As a precaution, many were still happy to wear a face mask!

The 6th-grade choir performed songs by Adel Tawil & Co., with Daniel Sans accompanying them on the piano. Jeannine Walter’s upcoming retirement was also mentioned, even though the official ceremony wasn’t scheduled to take place until three days later at the faculty’s summer party. The students had already performed a serenade with the fitting title “Happy Ending.”

The summer concert was hosted, as always, by Ulrike Wilmsmeyer. The 5th-grade wind ensemble, led by Andreas Jamin, showcased their skills. The upper-level choir, directed by Daniel Sans, impressed the audience with their fabulous vocal performances. Wind Ensemble Class 6 and the concert band, led by Stephan Reissig, demonstrated how one can improve even further by continuing to play a (wind) instrument beyond Class 5.

The many enthusiastic attendees were able to continue enjoying the evening on the Steinmühle grounds after the event had ended. As has been the custom in recent years, the school administration invited everyone to the boathouse to meet the Steinmühle rowing team over grilled food and cold drinks, learn about their latest activities, and marvel at the investments made by the rowing club and the school in the newly renovated boathouse.

Boats christened, achievements celebrated: RuS wrapped up the school year

Events & Celebrations, News, Rowing, Sports & Health

The summer festival of the Rudern und Sport Steinmühle club came to a close with everyone—guests, parents, students, and organizers—in high spirits, and with a substantial amount of money raised for the club’s coffers. This casual get-together featuring barbecue and cold drinks at the end of each school year has already become a tradition. It has also become customary for attendees of the summer concert—which previously took place in the Forum—to wrap up the evening at the newly renovated Steinmühle boathouse.

“The celebration was a complete success,” summarized Björn Gemmer, principal of Steinmühlen School and vice president of the RuS club. He, along with the main organizer—rowing instructor and coach Martin “Stromi” Strohmenger—and chairman Dietrich Mägerlein, were delighted with the successful summer celebration and the christening of two boats, which was performed by the deputy chairman of the school association, Gerhard Müller, as well as by Claus Duncker. The boats are now named “Schorsch” and… “Claus”! — If that isn’t a good omen for what’s to come…!

Many other prominent figures from the Marburg area attended the official expansion of the boat fleet. Among those present were First District Deputy Marian Zachow, Marburg Mayor Nadine Bernshausen, City Councilwoman Kirsten Dinnebier, Björn Backes, head of the Sports Department for the University City of Marburg, and Andreas Bartsch, who, as Chairman of the Board of Sparkasse Marburg-Biedenkopf, has always been and remains closely connected to Steinmühle in the context of all construction projects. At the same time, senior staff members from Steinmühle also stopped by, including Thomas Hoffmann (Managing Director of the boarding school) and Anke Muszynski (Head of the boarding school), Dirk Konnertz (Managing Director of the Steinmühle School) and Headmaster Bernd Holly, as well as members of the Buurman family—the boarding school’s shareholders—teachers from Steinmühle, and anyone else we may have inadvertently omitted from this list. On the athletic front, the highlight was the presence of Marc Weber. The elite athlete and new addition to RuS Steinmühle had just recently won a medal at the World Rowing Cup in Lucerne. We’ll be hearing more from him—and from the entire club as well. There are plans here that are no longer just sitting on the back burner.

The Vision of a Health Dictatorship: DS Class 12 Stages “Corpus Delicti”

Art, Music & Theater, News, Sports & Health

Some call this work the “contemporary German George Orwell.” In 2009, author Juli Zeh wrote the novel *Corpus Delicti*. The 12th-grade drama class staged this futuristic novel at the Steinmühle Forum. It depicts a scenario of a totalitarian surveillance state focused on the health of its citizens. The state—“the Method”—has the right to intrude on privacy. Or, to put it another way: it simply takes that right for itself.

It starts with the definition. What is health? “The Method” defines it as physical, mental, and social well-being. But who decides what that means? Who determines the criteria?

In any case, caution is advised. The eye of the Fourth Estate never sleeps. And that’s what happens to anyone who dares to lead a lifestyle that isn’t “immunologically compatible.” After all, a good person doesn’t smoke or drink. What’s more, those who oppose established methods also endanger the common good. And any means are justified to track them down.

Any means? Yes, absolutely any! Or who would have thought of sensors in the toilet that the government uses to measure stomach acid levels? Just one example of the kind of transparency we have to submit to.

A World of Ginger Shots and Smoothies

“With this play, the DS Group has addressed the highly topical issues of fitness optimization, the big data debate, the phenomenon of the surveillance state, and the tension between national security and freedom,” explains Melisande Lauginiger, who co-wrote and co-directed the play with Manuela Schmidt. “The play illustrates where things can lead when people are forced to give up their freedom in a state based on a misguided belief in state-guaranteed security.” The 19 students surrounding the protagonist “Mia Holl” had woven a few jokes and gags into this serious topic to elicit laughter and provide entertainment—even if it meant that the school principals, Björn Gemmer and Bernd Holly, were caught drinking wine or eating cream cake —which, of course, is a no-go in a world of ginger shots and smoothies.

“The play,” says Melisande Lauginiger, “transports us into a health dictatorship where brainwashing, oppression, manipulation, torture, and death not only turn people into puppets but also rob them of their individuality.” – A thought-provoking theatrical performance that received a round of applause and was illustrated with posters by Sarah Mengel (12a), Joelina Merle (12a), Alina Klähn (12a), Yunxi Zhang, and Fabian Diedrich (12c) had illustrated with posters under the guidance of art teacher Ines Vielhaben.

A clever “opener”

“We’re the opening act for the DS course”—with these words, a six-member cast from the Theater 5/6 club professionally kicked off the evening. The story revolved around a 5,000-euro loan, a money handoff in the park, “Manfred,” who was supposed to carry out a murder, and a person who did a truly excellent job acting as the eventual victim. The group led by teacher Dagmar Müller has potential—and will likely take the place of the main actors in a few years. We can’t wait to see what they’ll do!

Looking for more reading mentors: MENTOR Marburg-Biedenkopf was founded a year ago

Collaborations & Partnerships, Languages & International Affairs, News

Those who can read have a clear advantage! This often flippant remark—made when someone hasn’t looked closely enough—is absolutely justified in terms of its meaning. If someone can’t grasp a text and doesn’t understand its content, they can’t participate in the conversation and are excluded. With nearly 60 volunteer mentors, the MENTOR association —the Marburg-Biedenkopf Region Reading Tutors—aims to improve the alarming statistic that, by the end of fourth grade, 20 out of 100 children cannot read properly and 30 out of 100 cannot write according to the rules. The association was founded at the district level one year ago at the Steinmühle and recently celebrated its first anniversary there.

A special guest provided entertainment at the event in the Steinmühlenforum: children’s and young adult author Andreas Steinhöfel. By reading excerpts from his works, he not only brought a few smiles to people’s faces but also elicited the occasional laugh. The “MENTOR” initiative is important to him and something he takes very seriously; he supports it as a patron and states: “Those who cannot read have a very hard time navigating life with dignity.”

Working as a mentor is fulfilling. This volunteer position—which requires an extended police background check and participation in a training seminar—demands patience, but it’s very rewarding. At the Steinmühlenforum, four mentors spoke about their work, in which they introduce students—often from educationally disadvantaged and socially vulnerable backgrounds—to the world of letters and words. The district is still urgently seeking 15 to 20 additional reading mentors for this work.

“The situation hasn’t exactly improved during the pandemic,” reported Chairwoman Inge Maisch. She is the point of contact for people who might be interested in taking on the role of a mentor (info@mentor-marburg-biedenkopf.de). She is encouraged by the fact that nearly all of the reading mentors from the previous school year are continuing their work. It’s wonderful to see children develop a love of reading.

It was also a pleasure to listen to those who provided the artistic entertainment for the anniversary celebration. The Steinmühle Jazz Ensemble, led by Frank Wemme, was among them, as was Talea Funk with a contemplative composition.

The administration of Steinmühle Elementary and High School, as well as the school’s management team, consider MENTOR’s mission to be important. After all, reading is the fundamental skill underpinning the entire spectrum of school education. Steinmühle therefore hopes that as many people as possible will come forward and express interest in becoming a reading mentor.

A Trip Around the World: The 5th-Grade Musical Was “Top-Notch”

Art, Music & Theater, News

During their musical performance at the Steinmühle Forum, the 5th-grade class took the entire audience on a trip around the world. As a “family,” the students won this grand prize in a contest by finding the correct combination of numbers on the cap of a soda bottle. And as everyone knows, those who travel have stories to tell!

The first stop took the vacationers to Paris, before they later boarded a ship heading north. They marveled at the Northern Lights and celebrated Midsummer—all set against stunning backdrops. The group also traveled to Israel, then to Liberia, and on to Rio. Each stop was marked by appropriate musical performances, accompanied on the keyboard by Frank Wemme and conducted by Daniel Sans.

In every respect, this event—led by Ulrike Wilmsmeyer—was a delight for the audience. The youngest students at Steinmühle High School had memorized their lines very well, presented their performances with obvious joy, and looked great on stage as well. The Steinmühle Friends Association, led by Jasmine Weidenbach, had sponsored a total of 72 colorful T-shirts featuring a world map—designed and painted by Ms. Niedziella and Ms. Gräser from the costume team. The Sound & Light team led by Matthäus Otte ensured that the sound ran smoothly throughout the event.

The tightly choreographed and flawlessly executed program was extremely well received by the large audience. Enthusiasm spread throughout the packed forum. The thunderous applause after the event showed just how much the extensive preparations by everyone involved were appreciated. Many of them probably thought on their way home: Please, more events like this!

“Zwischenhausen Between Worlds”: The Steinmühle at “Performance Day”

Art, Music & Theater, Ecology and Sustainability, News

Climate change is a reality. The natural ecosystem of planet Earth has been severely disrupted by human activity and, in many areas, has already been destroyed, with devastating consequences for our ability to live and our quality of life. Extreme weather events and droughts, excessive heat, and severe storms will change the way we live and work, as well as how we spend our free time and enjoy the outdoors. To address these pressing problems, municipalities and private individuals are attempting to modify the microclimate in residential areas: removing impervious surfaces, greening roofs, facades, and courtyards, implementing green renovations in existing buildings, and revising zoning plans are at the top of their to-do lists.

Initiated by Ursula Eske, Waltraud Mechsner-Spangenberg, and Edgar Zieser, a community of artists formed in mid-July around the studio “IZwischen den HäusernI.” For a few hours at least, they brought to life the utopia of a radical vision of a green urban landscape: Starting on July 16, Zwischenhausen Street in Marburg was transformed during an extended performance involving numerous volunteers—including active members of the Zug Ketzerbach Volunteer Fire Department 2. —was covered with natural grass over an area of approximately 700 square meters, fostering not only food for thought but also, for the moment, a sense of well-being and joie de vivre.

Steinmühle also took part in the art festival.

“Eerily beautiful” or “beautifully eerie”—Steinmühlen art teacher Ines Vielhaben presented artworks created in a low-oxygen environment. Inside a zorb ball, using a respirator that allowed her to remain inside the hermetically sealed sphere for an extended period, she drew plant-like formations on the ball’s wall—reminiscent of past living conditions under functioning photosynthesis.

Is there hope for a climate of change if the streets are greened? Eleventh-grade students at Steinmühle explored their visions for the future. The delicate pencil drawings by Chiara Massa-Enders, Adama Sow, Joela Schwing, and Nicolas Althaus depicted the desolation of deforested forests or environmental conditions in which people can survive only with respirators and nature only within mobile climate capsules.

The event was supported by the City of Marburg as part of the Marburg 800 city anniversary celebrations.

Farewells and Praise at the Summer Festival: “Applause for everyone who achieves the impossible”

Events & Celebrations, Former Students & Alumni, News

The faculty’s summer party, held on the last Thursday before summer break, is a roller coaster of emotions: a sigh of relief that everyone has made it through another year, but also a moment of reflection as teachers leave Steinmühle.

First of all, a big round of applause: The food at this event was once again absolutely delicious! One thing we can say right off the bat as a summary of this school year is this: Whenever the boarding school kitchen on campus provided the meals—it was fantastic!

Under these circumstances, the end of the school year got off to a splendid start. Although there was a touch of sadness as the farewells began. It was time to say goodbye to Johanna Zuschlag, who had helped out as a teacher for half a year and is now heading to Sweden. A heartfelt thank you went to Max Rubrecht, who—according to principals Björn Gemmer and Bernd Holly—“was not only reliable in his subjects of physical education and math, but could also be counted on for any task.” Those present said “Goodbye,” “Thank you very much,” and “Farewell” to Jolanta Hilbert after eight years on the Steinmühle cleaning team.

Charlotte Stroh’s colleagues expressed their hope that this would not be a permanent farewell. She teaches math and Spanish, and Spain will be her home for the next 12 months.

For Günter Eschenbrenner, who was unable to attend the farewell celebration for health reasons, his colleagues had prepared a special farewell ceremony. Led by Daniel Sans, those present sang a song for the Greek and Latin teacher—who also holds a teaching certification in ethics—and recorded it: “Gaudeamus igitur”! It was an original idea and a gesture through which everyone conveyed their best wishes for his recovery.

An exceptionally large number of warm farewell messages, tributes, and gifts were given to a teacher who, after 28 years and three months, is leaving Steinmühle to begin her retirement: Jeannine Walter. This multitalented language specialist—head of the Languages and Arts Department and a teacher of English, French, and Italian—was honored with praise and expressions of respect from the school administration and management, as well as from numerous colleagues: The mother of two, who once completed her teaching internship at Steinmühle with a grade of 1.0, had earned a reputation at Steinmühle as a fighter who always prioritized professionalism. “Respected and feared,” she tackled pedagogically challenging tasks and was regarded as demanding, extremely organized, energetic, and assertive. With a twinkle in their eyes, colleagues recounted Jeannine Walter’s nickname, “Master of the Raster”—everything had to be in a logical and understandable order at all times. Many said they had learned a great deal from Jeannine Walter and ultimately concluded that saying goodbye weighed heavily on their hearts, as today they had to bid farewell to a colleague who was not only capable but also very warm-hearted.

Jeannine Walter expressed her gratitude for the numerous gifts and the “fireworks of ideas that had been set off in her honor.” She said that at the Steinmühle, she had not only learned an incredible amount herself, but had also experienced a tremendous sense of camaraderie among her colleagues. Jeannine Walter: “Many friendships have developed that enrich my life.”

At the end of the evening, school director Dirk Konnertz thanked everyone present for an eventful year: “A round of applause for everyone who achieves the impossible.” Konnertz directed this message to the administrative office, to Till Buurman in his dual role as IT specialist and photographer, to Cornelia Oestreicher-Gold for “pulling off the Abitur,” and to Marcel Kalb, Lisa Ebinger, and Lothar Potthoff for their dedication to sports, particularly girls’ soccer. He also extended his thanks to the boarding school, specifically to Director Thomas Hoffmann for the fruitful collaboration. The final praise of the evening went to the head of lower secondary school, Frank Wemme: “A master of organization.”

Time to burn off some energy again: Sports Day 2022

Life at Boarding School, News, Sports & Health

The Sports Day, featuring the Federal Youth Games and a sports festival, took place at Georg-Gassmann Stadium. In addition to faculty members, students from the 12th-grade advanced physical education class helped organize the event. Rowing activities took place around the Steinmühle boathouse under the guidance of rowing coach Martin Strohmenger. By the end of Sports Day, the students had earned quite a few points that count toward the Federal Youth Games standings, for which certificates were awarded once again this year. The participants proved in all disciplines that they can really give it their all and achieve great results! These performances also serve as the basis for earning the 2022 German Sports Badge.

2022 Spring Run: Good weather and a great athletic atmosphere

News, Sports & Health

School sports director Michael Neirich was delighted: After a two-year hiatus in school sports and the cancellation of competitions due to the pandemic, the regular sports events at Steinmühle were back in full swing. The 5th and 6th-grade classes were able to participate in a spring run again, and the Sports Day was held once more for the lower secondary school students.

“We were especially happy about the great athletic atmosphere, given the long forced break that preceded it,” Michael Neirich reported. “The consistently nice weather also worked in our favor.” The Spring Run, featuring a course around the boathouse, was supported by faculty members as well as a 12th-grade introductory physical education class. A total of three running competitions took place. These were individual races for boys and girls in grades 5 and 6. There was also the tried-and-true relay race for grades 5 and 6, in which five selected girls and five selected boys from each class competed against one another.

Exercise and Socializing: New Sports Hall Officially Opened

Events & Celebrations, News, Sports & Health

It is the latest new building—for now—to open on the Steinmühle grounds following the construction of the Forum and Atrium, as well as the extensive renovation of the main building and the bistro: the new sports hall. Steinmühle celebrated this latest milestone in June with about 100 invited guests. Representatives from politics, partner institutions, supporters, and those involved in the construction project made their way to Steinmühle and raised their glasses together to a successful future.

The Steinmühle was built—but not just for itself. Unlike any other building on the grounds, the sports hall has been guided by the spirit of cooperation from the very beginning. Notable among these are the German Institute for the Blind (blista), as well as the Blau-Gelb Marburg sports club and other partner institutions, which can book time slots starting at 5:00 p.m. The gym is particularly well-suited for visitors with disabilities who require accessible facilities. In this way, the Steinmühle takes some of the strain off public buildings and offers new opportunities to people with disabilities.

“Physical activity is part of the concept of education,” said Egon Vaupel, chairman of the board of the Steinmühle e.V. School Association, who expressed his gratitude on site to everyone involved in the construction as well as to all supporters.

The City of Marburg and the State of Hesse each provided a grant of 300,000 euros. “We can accept these funds with confidence thanks to this exceptional win-win situation,” explains Dirk Konnertz, the school’s executive director. The Steinmühle’s own support association, chaired by Jasmine Weidenbach, financed the portable sports equipment with a contribution of 28,000 euros.

The celebration, to which school administrators, boarding school representatives, other members of the school association and the booster club, as well as the sports department, parent representatives, and student representatives were invited, took place in a positive atmosphere despite the gloomy weather. Given the plans for its use, the area in and around the spacious sports hall is likely to become a regular gathering place very soon—for exercise and socializing.
