During the week of August 21–27, the 7th-grade students tackled challenging team tasks as part of the Stadtwald project—and, of course, they did some climbing along the way. The annual team-building days for the 7th-grade classes were clearly a lot of fun for everyone involved.
Last school year marked the debut of our reward system: The students worked hard to earn points for their respective houses in various areas of boarding school life, which they could use at the end of the school year to plan an outing of their choice. The students from the Hessenhaus clearly won the competition and decided to go on a trip to Moviepark in Bottrop, followed by dinner together.
“We tested every roller coaster together, but the free-fall tower was only for those with strong nerves. To wrap things up, we got thoroughly shaken up and soaked on the whitewater ride before stopping for dinner at an American diner. Late in the evening, we returned to the Steinmühle and will do everything we can to win the house competition again next year.”
The school welcomes its new students
The welcome for the students in the three 5th-grade classes was perfectly organized: The 6th-grade students sang excerpts from last year’s musical production, and the two principals, Björn Gemmer and Bernd Holly, had prepared warm and thoughtful welcome remarks, Frank Wemme, as the academic director, ensured the ceremony ran smoothly, and the three homeroom teachers—Constanze Oestreicher-Gold, Eberhard Wieth, and Moritz Zöckler gathered “their” classes around them for the first time. They handed out name tags to the new students, and Jasmine Weidenbach from the Friends of the School Association presented everyone with their first Steinmühlen T-shirt.
Later, the newly enrolled students in the upper grades were also warmly welcomed by the school administration and briefed on the school’s organization and procedures.
We wanted our American exchange students to feel right at home during the welcome ceremony hosted by the school principals. In the American-themed “Route 66” upper-level lounge, Principals Gemmer and Holly welcomed the group from Goshen for the third time in June 2017.
It was the return visit as part of the exchange program with our partner school in Goshen, Indiana. In the spring, Ms. Boebel and Mr. Steinebach had flown to the New World with 20 11th-grade students, where they lived for two weeks with their American partner families, attended high school, learned interesting facts about the region’s culture and people through day trips, and were then able to explore the two major cities, Chicago and New York City, each with a wonderful itinerary.
Our American guests were in Marburg from June 6 to 20. They were particularly taken with the small “school village” of Steinmühle and the warm welcome they received from their host families. The day trip to the Rhine with their German partners was a highlight of their visit with us. They were very impressed by Marburg and its special atmosphere. And even though the Americans still had some time left in Germany (including Berlin), saying goodbye wasn’t exactly easy.
A study abroad program in the U.S. is also being offered to students entering 11th grade next year.
