Sports & Health at the Steinmühle in Marburg

Promote healthy physical, emotional, and intellectual personal development

On its spacious grounds, Steinmühle offers a wide and varied range of opportunities for all kinds of sports activities. In this way, students develop their motor skills and perception in a playful manner and through a wide variety of activities. Balanced experiences in movement and perception support the healthy physical, psychological, and intellectual development of our students. This is closely linked to the development of a positive self-concept as well as emotional and social stability.

“At Steinmühle, they recognized my strengths and supported me. That helped me gain self-confidence and mature even as a young person.”

Marie-Sophie Künkel

Former student / Member of the State Parliament

Special Sports Programs for Each Grade Level

In fifth grade, in addition to physical education classes held in our gym or on the school’s outdoor sports fields, swimming lessons take place at the Wehrda swimming pool.

The lunchtime clubs for fifth and sixth graders include ball games, rock climbing, Jugger, horseback riding, trampoline, and rowing, among other activities. In seventh grade, rowing is the main focus of the physical education curriculum. At the end of seventh grade, a multi-day rowing camp takes place at Lake Eder. In the performance-oriented elective course in rowing for 8th and 9th grades, students can further develop their skills. Additionally, rowing with blind and visually impaired youth can be chosen as part of the elective course “Understanding Rivers and Lakes” in cooperation with the Marburg Institute for the Blind.

In 8th grade, a school ski course takes place in Mayrhofen. All students in this grade spend a week at the “Gschösswandhaus” and learn to ski or snowboard.

Children and teens of all ages can play during recess on the grass field, the two artificial turf fields, the multipurpose field, and the basketball court in front of the gym. The “Active Recess” program takes place in the gym during the winter and outdoors in the summer. Equipment such as waveboards, speedminton, badminton, and ball games is available for checkout.

The Steinmühle has a fitness room that is large enough to accommodate an entire class. In addition to being used for physical education classes, the room is primarily used by our competitive rowers for training.

In high school, physical education is one of our core subjects. As early as the introductory phase, interested students are introduced to the subject “Sports Theory” in what is known as the “profile preparation course,” where they also meet their future advanced physical education teacher. Physical education is then offered as an advanced course starting in the qualification phase. As a basic course, physical education is taught in the first year of the qualification phase (Q1 and Q2) within the class group (profile). In the second year of the qualification phase (Q3 and Q4), physical education classes are offered as electives in various areas of physical activity.

Rowing: An Integral Part of Life at Steinmühle

In 7th grade, rowing is the main focus of physical education classes. At the end of 7th grade, a multi-day rowing retreat takes place at Lake Eder. In the performance-oriented elective course in rowing for Grades 8 and 9, students can further develop their skills. Additionally, students can choose to row with blind and visually impaired youth in the elective course “Understanding Rivers and Lakes,” offered in cooperation with the Marburg Institute for the Blind.

Rowing is an integral part of the regular physical education curriculum in several grade levels. Students who enjoy rowing beyond the school’s physical education and elective classes—and who may even wish to pursue competitive rowing—will find excellent conditions at Steinmühle.

The Steinmühle Riding School

Up to 30 horses can be accommodated in the indoor and outdoor stalls. Ten school horses are available for the daily riding lessons; they are lovingly and professionally cared for by their riders and our teaching and grooming staff. Our offerings for riders and horses include riding lessons for beginners and advanced riders (lunge work, group and private lessons) in dressage, show jumping, and cross-country; specialized training with your own horse; conditioning rides; and personalized competition support.

On weekends, recreational activities such as trail rides, quadrille riding, equestrian events, and festivals are offered to riders. We also support and actively promote sporting events such as ring tournaments (Youth Cup, Basic Ring, Advanced Ring), riding badge exams, foal and breeding shows, and horse shows. A weekly riding lesson as part of the extracurricular activities program, as well as the weekend activities mentioned above, are free of charge for our boarding students.
