“For projects with exceptional appeal”: Steinmühle School & Boarding School received the 2024 MINT Star

Contests & Awards, News, STEM, Talent Development

A grand reception on our campus: Steinmühle welcomed a five-member delegation to accept a very special award in the STEM field. The Association for Electrical, Electronic, and Information Technologies (VDE) and the German Amateur Radio Club (DARC) awarded the Steinmühle School & Boarding School the STEM Star 2024, thereby recognizing “outstanding and sustained commitment to the fields of mathematics, computer science, natural sciences, and technology.”

The interplay between the disciplines was convincing

Individual teachers and teams from schools in Hesse were eligible to apply. “With a STEM Star, we recognize projects and programs that demonstrate exceptional impact, continuity, and ingenuity,” said Dr. Kevin Rick, director of VDE Südwest. The award was presented to STEM coordinator and head of the STEM gifted education program, Dr. Jutta Töhl-Borsdorf, her colleague Antje Seel, and her colleague Dr. Patrick Szabo. “Without qualified guidance that inspires students and spurs them on to peak performance in research and experimentation, such outstanding achievements would not be possible,” commented the laudators, including Thomas Beiderwieden from VDE Rhein-Main and Christian Entsfellner from DARC, in recognition of their work. In the case of Steinmühle’s winning project, “Water Analysis 2.0,” the jury was particularly impressed by the interplay of the disciplines involved in the project—ranging from ecology to programming to model building. The team of students from the Plus-MINT track at the Steinmühle boarding school thus advanced to the national finals of “Jugend forscht” this early summer. This project involves a measurement platform developed and built by the students themselves to determine water quality (we have reported on it several times).

Minister of Culture as Patron

“Steinmühle is delighted to receive this very special award and is proud of everyone who contributed to it through their hard work, perseverance, and dedication,” said Principal Björn Gemmer on behalf of the award recipients, who received certificates and prize money totaling 1,500 euros. For Steinmühle, this serves as an incentive to continue investing energy in this area. Because, as you can see, it’s worth it in every way!

The award ceremony, held under the patronage of Armin Schwarz, Hessian Minister of Culture, was celebrated by the participants with a meal together in the dining room of the Steinmühle. And there, too, there was plenty of praise—for our cuisine.

The 12th-grade class took full advantage of the opportunities to learn about various careers

News, Politics, Business & Responsibility

“Tying a tie is a thing of the past,” announced Sparkasse Marburg-Biedenkopf on its roll-up banner, to prevent any notions of a overly conservative image from arising regarding the banking assistant apprenticeship. It seemed the students in the Steinmühle 12th-grade class had no problem with that anyway. The local bank’s information booth at the Rotary Career Information Day at Steinmühle was consistently well-attended. Banking clerk—a career with many prospects—and who better to confirm this than Dirk Bamberger (CDU), a current member of the state parliament who was also present and who began his professional career in that very field.

Quite Popular: Psychology

But this evening—which takes place every November at the Steinmühle Forum—was not just about the careers of bankers or politicians. The list of representatives from a wide variety of professions was long: lawyers, business graduates, medical doctors, and dentists; the information provided by the psychologist in attendance drew particular interest from the audience. There are also other professions that, as usual, generate particular interest: Several people expressed interest in the German Armed Forces, though slightly fewer than in previous years. The Sustainability Management degree program attracted a lot of attention, and Pharmacy and Physics also drew considerable interest during the three discussion sessions.

Finding My Way to a Trade “Through Detours”

New additions to the lineup included trades such as butchery and carpentry, represented by professionals in those fields. Christiane Harms, herself a goldsmith and project coordinator for “Talent Scouts in the Skilled Trades,” answered questions about whether the skilled trades have any supporters among high school seniors. “Absolutely,” reported the representative of the District Craftsmen’s Association, noting only that people often take a detour first: “Many start something else first and then enter the trades after dropping out.” The need for skilled workers in a wide variety of trades and the comparatively good earnings even in the very early years are often overlooked beforehand. Her advice: “Feel free to stop by and see us.”

Homicide Division and the Press

A new addition to the evening’s lineup was a representative from the homicide division, and many didn’t want to miss the insights offered by this “real detective.” How does a pilot work, and how does one become one? That, too, was part of the new information offerings at the Career Information Day at the Steinmühle. Are these times so interesting from an observer’s perspective—or has the profession’s image actually improved? Whatever the case may be, Carsten Beckmann, deputy editor-in-chief of our local newspaper, the Oberhessische Presse, was delighted to see a room full of people interested in careers as journalists and editors.

Thanks to the organizing team

So far, we have not mentioned the representatives of the professions in human resources development, information technology (IT), and software; tax consultants and certified public accountants; and precision optics. We must also not forget the event’s organizing team, consisting of Dr. Claudia Röder, who is responsible for career guidance at Steinmühle, and Hans-Heinrich Bähr from the Rotary Club Marburg-Schloss, who is in charge of the career information service. Principal Björn Gemmer thanked both of them for their reliable preparation with a small gift.

“Valuable for navigation”

As always, we caught a few comments from the students after the event: “I had a lot of ideas and expectations about certain careers, but now I can assess everything more realistically. This event is very valuable in terms of career guidance,” said Ivo Hamann. Comments from his classmates confirmed this, though they said they would have really liked to hear more about marine research. Otherwise, according to Elsa Stremme and Lia Kraft, it was okay, “…just more sessions and more time—that would have been even better.”

6i Project: Bringing Generations Together Through Board Games

International High School, News, Social Engagement

As part of the “Global Perspectives (GP)” course, a class for international students, girls and boys in Grade 6 of our International High School track (6i) carried out a social project. They developed a board game to bring different generations together and visited a senior living facility with it.

Each group had complete freedom and creativity in designing the game format, the rules, and the layout. But they always had the same goal: to break the ice and bring young and old together, reported English and Spanish teacher Victoria Pérez. The games included questions about history, life experiences, and personal stories.

“We actually launched the project last school year,” the teacher explains. However, they have only just begun to put it into practice.

In the end, nothing but smiling faces

“At first, we had to overcome some initial hesitation and get the conversations started,” recalls Victoria Pérez. “Some students were enthusiastic from the start, while others weren’t quite as enthusiastic at first. But by the end of the day, all I could see were smiling faces and a keen interest in sharing experiences with older people.”

Many have never been to a nursing home

The teacher continued: “It really helped show the students the reality of life for many older people in our city, since most of them had never been to a nursing home before and some had a negative image of these facilities. It was also one of my goals to show them that there are wonderful people living in these facilities from whom we still have a lot to learn.”

Victoria Pérez was accompanied on the field trip to the senior living facility by Björn Wagner, a teacher of religion and ethics at Steinühle. He also currently teaches GP in class 6i. Björn Wagner helped with the entire organization. Theresa Großer, head of the International High School Program, had established contact with the retirement home.

“The lives of many older people are being forgotten”

Victoria Pérez believes that social projects like these are important for young people: “I think this kind of project deserves more attention, because younger generations must not forget those who created the world we live in today. And it’s very sad that the lives of many older people are being forgotten because the world is moving so fast that there seems to be no room left for the joy of being an older person.”

Trunk or Treat: A Spooky and Fun Halloween Eve Celebration in the Steinmühle Schoolyard

Bilingual Elementary School, Events & Celebrations, News

“Trunk or Treat” was the theme on the eve of Halloween in the Steinmühle schoolyard. As an event organized entirely by the elementary school parents, cars were lined up there starting at 5 p.m.—each with its trunk open and filled with lots of surprises. With great attention to detail, the parents of our bilingual elementary school students had decorated their trunks in Halloween style and offered various treats to the children as they came by one after another. But that wasn’t all: Not only the children, but also the moms and dads were in costume, so you often had to take a closer look to see who was hiding behind the mask.

A Parent-Led Initiative

For those who were expecting the familiar phrase “Trick or Treat” rather than “Trunk,” here’s a quick explanation of this variation. “For many families, this idea replaces the tradition of children going door-to-door, which is sometimes viewed somewhat critically not only in the U.S. but also here in Germany,” explains Lorraine Herrmann, the deputy director of the Bilingual Elementary School. She expressed great pride in the successful parent-led initiative, which involved crafting, lighting, and decorating—and for which she provided only organizational support. Steinmühle says “Thank you” to all the parents whose dedication made such a wonderful evening possible for our elementary school children!
