The Dwarf and the Seven Snow Whites

The ten actors of the WU Theater clearly relished their roles: In a contemporary adaptation of the Brothers Grimm’s fairy tale “Snow White,” the seven Snow Whites and their dwarf encountered all sorts of surprises. And the evil banker grew increasingly exasperated by the dwarf’s resilience, a character skillfully and humorously portrayed by Jonas Pfalz.

Boarding School Stories

In a guest performance by the Lollipop children’s theater group from the Haus der Jugend, the young actors convincingly explored stressful everyday situations and ways to cope with them. They portrayed the fears of a child of divorced parents just as convincingly as their concern for a guinea pig.

The WU Film team thoroughly entertained the audience with two productions: In their first film, the students showed what the world might look like if time were “reversed.” An interesting play on our perceptions!

The second segment took viewers into the world of gambling—specifically, the poker scene—where the expectations of everyone involved aren’t always met.

Great Enthusiasm at the First Chess Tournament at the Steinmühle

On June 18, 2015, 28 students from four Marburg schools (grades 5 and 6) gathered at the Steinmühle to compete in the Marburg School Chess Championship.

After 3 hours of play, thrilling duels, many beautiful moves, and well-executed checkmate situations, the moment had finally arrived, and the Martin team–Luther–The school earned the title of 2015 Marburg School Chess Champion.

But it was a long road to get there. “Chess is the fastest game in the world because you have to organize thousands of thoughts every second.” This quote from Albert Einstein was enthusiastically put into practice by the players, who set to work, to demonstrate their skills and compete against one another.

After a tournament that was very fair from start to finish, the final result could hardly have been any closer. The last round of play was ultimately the deciding factor, which teams would take home the highly coveted trophies, since everything was still up in the air until then. The young chess players performed brilliantly right up to the end, and so we would like to congratulate all the teams on their successful participation:

1st Place: Martin Luther School I (Alexandru Despa, Bosko van Andel, Philipp Grein, Alina Löffler)

2nd place: Steinmühle II School Camp (Finn Krausch, Jan Audretsch, Tilmann Molzberger, Yasin Yilmaz, Fabian Diedrich)

3rd place: Steinmühle I Rural School Camp (Spartak Gevorkyan, Urs Seifart, Luka Hartmann, Richard Henkel, Paul Anton Schmölz)

4th place: Richtsberg Comprehensive School (Tim Josephs, Sascha Grefenstein, Taha Baroudi, Hamse Baroudi)

5th place: Carl-Strehl-Schule / Richtsberg Comprehensive School (Kolja Schorat, Nico Waldmann, Daryll Wirth, Keanu Sander, Mika Struck)

6th place: Martin Luther School II (Daria Dersch, Lili Kern, Maximilian Kruntz, Leon Zeiss)

Special mention should be made here of the students from Richtsberg Gesamtschule and Carl-Strehl-Schule, who formed a joint team to enable as many people as possible to play.

While dethe tournament, , the games played could be analyzed again in an adjoining room. The Steinmühle had provided plenty of drinks and snacks, and anyone who felt like getting a little exercise during the break could let off some steam on the sports field next door.

And so a successful day finally came to an end—a day spent discussing our own games and those we’d watched, celebrating our victories, and analyzing our mistakes in our losses, all with the goal of doing even better next year.

All participants had high praise and appreciation for the organization and execution of the tournament, especially for the prudent tournament management by Daniel Allig, our chess expert and club leader.

2015 High School Graduation Ceremony: Excellent Results for the Graduates and the School

On June 20, Steinmühle bid farewell to the graduating class of 2015. The upper-school choir, conducted by Mr. Sans, kicked off a cheerful celebration featuring entertaining speeches. Mr. Gemmer praised the graduating class for its down-to-earth and hard-working nature. Ms. Opper, a longtime teacher of the class, looked back on important events. Aylin Tarim and Eduardo Fechner, speaking on behalf of the graduating class, did the same.

In her witty speech, Ms. Villemain—a longtime parent representative—gave the school a very positive review. Drawing on her American perspective, she skillfully conveyed nuanced, plausible, and surprising insights, which she expressed with great humor.

Three high school graduates were honored for their outstanding performance on the Abitur: Lisa Madelaine Kemena, Philipp Kreiter, and Philipp-Leo Mengel all earned a perfect 1.0 on their Abitur exams. The Social Award for exceptional social commitment both inside and outside of school was also presented twice. Lisa-Marie Becker and Antonia Kraft received the award, sponsored by the Friends of the School Association, which this year included a 1/4-ounce “American Eagle 2015” gold coin.

Our math whiz kids never fail to impress: Jan Audretsch (5b) and Carolin Mauersberger (8b) took top spots in the finals of the “2015 Pangea Math Competition”

While the intermediate round of the Pangea Competition was already exceptionally successful for Steinmühle, with ten students participating, it was particularly gratifying that two math prodigies, Jan Audretsch and Carolin Mauersberger, qualified for the final round on June 13, 2015.

The two of them were happy about it, but didn’t seem particularly surprised and said they thought they had a shot at making it to the finals. And they weren’t wrong:

Jan Audretsch achieved a result that placed him first in Hesse and seventh in Germany.
Carolin Mauersberger finished 4th in Hesse and 38th in Germany based on her results.

On the Hunt for Mr. X

On May 30, the Steinmühle community was out and about in the university town of Marburg, hunting for Mr. X. The well-known board game from the 1980s, “Scotland Yard—The Hunt for Mr. X,” came to life, and the students became the game pieces. One group of four students “transformed” into Mr. X and became the ones being hunted. The other student groups played the detectives.
The Mr. X group was identified by a blue school backpack, which had to be worn in plain sight at all times. The search area was marked on a map of Marburg and could not be left under any circumstances.
With the help of WhatsApp and the photos of Mr. X’s whereabouts posted there at regular intervals, the investigators were often hot on the heels of the hunted, and only a daring leap onto a bus or into a taxi could help Mr. X escape. Over the course of the day, Mr. X’s trademark item (the blue school backpack) changed hands several times, and the hunt for a new Mr. X began anew.
Tired and exhausted from the frequent up-and-down treks through Marburg’s Upper Town, all the students returned to the Steinmühle. The buffet that followed and the evening’s conclusion in the boarding school’s tea room rounded out what was an all-around successful day of community.

Steinmühle Kicks Off the Swimming Season on the Lahn

On June 14, the students at Steinmühle officially kicked off the swimming season and inaugurated the boarding school’s own beach volleyball court. With temperatures reaching 29 degrees in the shade and glorious sunshine, a dip in the Lahn River offered a welcome way to cool off. Dinner, of course, was also held outdoors. There were delicious grilled dishes served with fresh salads. The Steinmühle community enjoyed their time at the Lahn grounds well into the late evening, and the students fell into bed that night feeling content and relaxed.

Lucas Schäfer Wins World Championship Qualifiers in Two Boat Classes

Lucas Schäfer, From RuS Steinmühle, the following athlete placed in the lightweight class:Together with his partner Alexander Diedrich from Treis-Karden and two other rowers from Münster at the 56th Ratzeburg International Rowing Regatta beating the national competition by more than 10 seconds to take first place. This means that The four secured their spots at the U23 World Championships, which will be held in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, at the end of July.

Lucas also had an easy time of it in the qualifying race for the lightweight coxless pair and went on to win that event on Sunday against national competition. With these performances, his RuS coach Martin Strohmenger Lucas will be in one of the boats at the next Olympics.

Ranking of the German Junior Eights

At the International Junior Regatta in Hamburg the Hesse Junior B eight made a name for itself with an impressive second-place finish. Among those in the boat was Leon Sauer (9c). With this performance, the boat moved up to second place in the rankings of German junior eights.

The results of the latest RuS talent were also encouraging Dustin Brömer (7c). He also helped the Hessian Rowing Association’s lightweight quadruple sculls team win silver, losing by a hair’s breadth. “A promising trend,” states state coach Harald Blum: The 13-year-old from Marburg is doing an outstanding job and shows great promise for the future.

Julius Grau sets a personal best in the track and field decathlon

Julius Grau (11th grade, sports track), who competes for LAZ Gießen Stadt und Land, scored 6,225 points in the decathlon in Stuttgart-Bernhausen in the U18 age group, setting seven personal bests. In a competition held as a qualifier for the U18/U20 youth divisions, Julius finished in 9th place, thereby qualifying for the German U18 Youth Combined Events Championships in August.
