Advent Afternoon for Grades 5 and 6

Archive, News

On December 12, the lower school held its Advent afternoon—Grade 5 in the Forum and Grade 6 in the Centrum.

The 5th-grade classes gathered around the Christmas tree in the Forum. The large crowd of parents, siblings, and grandparents in attendance listened to the first results of the wind ensemble’s work under the direction of Ulrike Wilmsmeyer, and the various instrumental groups performed Christmas classics and other pieces, such as “Au clair de la lune.”

The 5th-grade choir, directed by Daniel Sans, also performed the first results of their musical efforts, including an autumn song, a piece from the musical “Am Himmel geht ein Fenster auf,” and, to conclude, a rousing rendition of “Ehre sei Gott.”

After more stage performances—including the English sketch “Crazy Christmas” by Class 5a and Christmas-themed texts from the GuFi language workshop—the celebration moved on to its interactive portion, with students participating in arts-and-crafts and puzzle-solving activities in various groups. Students led the game and craft groups on their own. Finally, Class 5b performed their self-choreographed class dance.

With the active support of the parents, the traditional Advent craft afternoon for 6th-grade classes at the Centrum was a success, much to the delight of everyone involved. The brass band class provided a spirited opening performance, after which students could make their own Christmas decorations—including ones made from peanuts, custom candle arrangements, Fröbel stars, Soma cubes, and scented oranges for the Christmas tree—as well as an Advent wreath made from cubes and napkins. Anyone who wanted to could have their own Christmas photo taken in the photo studio. In the atrium, the Advent picnic baskets were generously stocked, and there was plenty of time and leisure for chatting and socializing. A heartfelt thank you for the wonderful support to Ms. Schwing, Ms. Steinfeldt, Ms. Arweiler, Ms. Frederix, Ms. Sautter-Müller, and Ms. Schaefer!

The Master Detective Visits the 7th Grade

Archive, News

The Audio Theater Marburg presents “The Devil’s Foot”

As part of the mystery project led by M. Lauginiger for 7th-grade classes, a reading of “Der Teufelsfuß” took place at the Steinmühle Forum on December 1, 2016. Stefan Gille and Daniel Sempf from Hörtheatrale Marburg presented a vivid and thrilling reading and performance of a spine-chilling story in which the protagonists, Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson, had to solve a mysterious case. This was very well received by the 7th-grade students.

About the Plot: Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson are on a vacation in Cornwall because the master detective has been prescribed some rest. But their rest is soon over: much to Dr. Watson’s chagrin, Holmes decides to take on the case of Brenda Tregennis, who has just been murdered. The investigation turns out to be very eventful, and many details must be pieced together to reach a conclusive solution—especially since another murder has occurred.

The students listened intently to the two detectives’ radio drama and rewarded the actors with thunderous applause.

In-school teacher training on November 22, 28, and 29, 2016

Archive, News

It was a stroke of luck right from the start that we were able to secure Annemarie von der Groeben as a speaker for the first morning of our in-school professional development session. The former Director of Instruction at the Laborschule Bielefeld—who is also a co-founder of the “Blick über den Zaun” school network and remains an “education expert” active in a wide range of contexts to this day, continues to pursue her “life’s work”—ensuring successful academic learning for all children—with undiminished vigor, despite her retirement. As a result, the faculty was able to receive and incorporate valuable insights, and the response to and acceptance of the presentation were exceptionally high. According to a survey conducted in June 2015, the topic “Open-Classroom Teaching and Interest-Based Teaching” On the agenda: How can we design tasks to offer intelligent choices while keeping key skills to be acquired in mind? How can we reconcile the academic standards of high school with the diverse desire for self-determination among children and adolescents? How can we help children recognize their strengths and avoid discouraging them? These were the kinds of questions addressed in a mix of lectures and short workshop sessions.

As part of the journey toward becoming a “Health-Promoting School,” there were also two phases this year in the area of “Physical Activity in the Classroom”. In a presentation on Tuesday, November 22, Martin Dürr shared a variety of ideas and routines that have long been part of daily life at the Gymnasium am Mosbacher Berg in Wiesbaden. It was wonderful to see that, with the indoor recess (grades 5–8) during the cold season, we are already well on our way in this regard.

2016 Reading Aloud Contest

Archive, News

“Those who know how to read hold the key to great deeds and undreamed-of possibilities.” (Aldous Huxley). The three participants in the 58th Reading Aloud Competition, organized annually by the German Publishers and Booksellers Association, demonstrated that some people are particularly skilled at this. First, one class winner is selected from each 6th-grade class, and that student then has the chance to advance to the national reading competition finals.

The three class winners, Paula Auschill (6a), Ellen Hilt (6b), and Emilia Ouaissa (6c), demonstrated their reading talent in front of their classmates on December 8, 2016, during the Steinmühle school competition by reading a passage from a book of their own choosing and then a text they hadn’t seen before. Paula Auschill was named the winner by the jury, which consisted of students and teachers. She will now advance to the next round—the city-wide competition. Many thanks to the competition organizers, Frank Wemme and Dagmar Müller. We wish Paula the best of luck in the next stages of the reading competition.

Cultural Evening 2016

Archive, News

Students present a varied program

The performers at this year’s Cultural Evening were treated to enthusiastic applause from the large audience.

The “Speech” section featured both thoughtful prose and entertaining scenes. These were:

  • the speeches addressed to adults by Lea Lessing, Tessa Deusing, Abdallah Jaber, and Raphael Hettche,
  • the mystery story reading featuring texts from 7th grade,
  • “Letters to Trees and Clouds” by the Theater Club for Grades 5–6 and
  • The Loriot Scenes from the Q3 Drama Class.

The musical lineup was surprisingly diverse, ranging from chamber music to Syrian hip hop to well-known international classics. The program included:

  • the energetic performance by the Bremerhaus Band,
  • the piece “Africa” by the Chamber Music Club and
  • Two Schlager classics from the WU: Songs and Stories from Around the World.

The natural sciences department showcased its cultural side. The program included:

  • The dramatic reenactment of the invention of nylon thread by the Q3 Chemistry class.

The students from “Sound & Light,” led by Sam Kempkes, ensured that the event ran smoothly.

2016 Indoor Soccer Tournament – Well-Balanced Teams Play Great Soccer

Archive, News

On November 18, 47 students and four teachers gathered for the 2016 Steinmühlen Soccer Tournament. Under the direction of Mr. Neirich, seven teams were formed, and the tournament kicked off with 21 games played in a round-robin format.

The even matchups kept the competition exciting right up to the final game and resulted in matches played at a remarkably high technical level. The fact that the teams were playing at a similar level was evident, among other things, in that Team F, which finished in seventh place, managed to eke out a 2-1 victory over the eventual tournament champion.

Although the balance of the teams deserves mention here, three players in particular stand out:

The Student at the Bremerhaus Morteza demonstrated not only brilliant technique but also excellent court vision. Thanks to his team-oriented play, he played a major role in his team “Die Raketen” winning the tournament.

The player proved to be remarkably resilient and skillful Cecile Arroyo knew how to make her mark. The boarding school student had learned to play soccer in Alaska and had already earned plenty of respect from the “tough guys” after just her first game.

Mr. Schubert , playing as goalkeeper for the “Eisernen” (Team A), drove a number of opponents to despair. Completely focused and fearless, he confidently cleared dangerous situations in front of his goal and secured second place for his team in the final standings.

The coaching staff led by Mr. Neirich ensured that the tournament ran smoothly, and everyone was happy to have the chance to play some really good soccer again.

The teams’ rankings:

1.

Mannschaft E – The Raketen

Mirko Radatz, Leon Sauer, Konstantin Zimmer, Morteza, Paul Wolf, Johannes Agel, Jutta Töhl

2.

Those chemists are crazy—Advanced Chemistry Class at the cultural evening

Archive, News

As in previous years, the 2016 Cultural Evening featured a presentation by Dr. Jutta Töhl-Borsdorf’s advanced chemistry class. Under the theme “Chemists Are Crazy,” the students presented a dramatic reenactment of the invention of nylon thread this year. On stage, a long thread was created from two chemicals, and Riko Uphoff used a “cheese mouse” and a “Gretchen Faust” model to explain how individual molecules assemble into long chains and can ultimately form threads.

It’s a real shame: Bernd Schumertl is leaving the Steinmühle

Archive, News

It is with great regret that students and teachers must accept that Mr. Schumertl will no longer be the head chef at the Steinmühle starting in October. After nearly 23 years, he has been looking for new challenges—and has found them.

On September 15, principals Björn Gemmer and Bernd Holly, along with student representative Jannes Kühn, bid farewell to Bernd Schumertl on behalf of the school community. They expressed their regret at his departure and their deep gratitude for his many years of service in the school kitchen.

Schumertl has accomplished a great deal at the Steinmühle:

  • He has made us forget the days when complaining about bad food was a common figure of speech.
  • He has managed to strike the perfect balance between affordable meals and high satisfaction with the menu.
  • He was always genuinely interested in engaging in dialogue with the students.
  • He knew how to streamline the meal-serving process, so that the dining room at the Steinmühle was known for its pleasant and sociable atmosphere.
  • Ultimately, he also received significant recognition “from outside,” including from the German Nutrition Society, which awarded the Steinmühlenküche its Premium Certificate in 2013—making it the first school in Hesse and the second in Germany to receive this honor.

The students and faculty would like to thank him for this and wish him all the best in his future personal and professional endeavors!

Many Visitors at the 2016 Fall Festival

Archive, News

Once again this year, there were plenty of information booths, hands-on activities, vendor booths, sports activities, and music from various groups.

The school made a special effort this year to reach out to former students, and many, many of them came to sign the list for “their” graduating class. Among them was Gerhard Heide, who had enrolled at the “Müllersche Institut” in 1949 to graduate from Steinmühle.

The tent-goers that evening were thoroughly entertained by ” Softeis Unplugged ” with Werner Eismann.

Victory for both Steinmühlen teams at the city-wide JtfO soccer tournament for Age Groups II and III on September 22, 2016

Archive, News

For the first time in Steinmühle’s history, two Steinmühle soccer teams competed in the city finals of “Youth Trains for the Olympics” in competition classes II (born in 2001 and 2002) and III (born in 2003 and 2004)—and promptly won both tournaments!
With this result, both teams have qualified for the district finals next spring.

For the “older team,” a victory was practically a must. The core of the team consists of the players who competed in the state finals this past July. The team was supplemented by players born in 2002, who were already part of the WK III team in 2015 and caused a sensation by finishing in 4th place at the state finals. These well-established team dynamics certainly played a role in ensuring that our team once again stood out at this year’s city tournament with its strong cohesion and exceptional team spirit. As a result, they won every game convincingly, and Steinmühle was already declared the winner before the final match. A 4–0 victory over the Emil-von-Behring School was followed by a 5–1 win against the Elisabeth School, and the final match against the Sophie-von-Brabant School was also won 3–0.

The younger Steinmühlen soccer players from WK III took the field in this lineup for the first time. “On paper,” the team was anything but a favorite, but they played their way into the tournament very well and demonstrated great team unity and beautiful combination play as early as their second game. In their first game against the Gymnasium Philippinum, they drew 1–1; this was followed by a commanding 4–0 victory over the Elisabethschule and, in the decisive final game, a 3–1 win against the Emil-von-Behring-Schule.

Congratulations to both teams and their players! The performance of both teams gives us hope for the district finals.
