Mostly Correct Answers: Our Students’ Successes in the Pangea Competition and the 8th-Grade Math Competition

This year, a total of 70 students in grades 5–9 participated in the Germany-wide Pangea Math Competition .

The Pangea Math Competition is a Germany-wide math competition for students in grades 3 through 10 that has been held annually since 2007. It is organized by the Pangea Wettbewerbe e. V. association in Wiesbaden. Federal Minister Johanna Wanka of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research has been the patron of the math competition since October 2013.

Our students had to solve a total of 25 problems of varying difficulty. We’re pleased to report that 10 of them advanced to the next round and are now among the top 500 in their grade across all of Germany.

They are: Elisa Muth (5a), Jan Audretsch (5b), Vanessa Gold (6c), Justus Schneider (8a), Carolin Mauersberger (8b), Bodam Lee (8b), Konradin Kienle-Betzler (8b), Samuel Kempkes (8c), Roman Kryczka (8c), and Felix Farsch (9c).

On May 9, the intermediate round took place in Gießen, in which nearly all of the students mentioned above participated and achieved consistently good and very good results. Jan Audretsch and Carolin Mauersberger even qualified for the regional finals on June 13 in Frankfurt, and are now among the top 10 in their grade. We wish them the best of luck.

Friends of the School Association Unveils the Newly Redesigned Upper School Room “Route 66”

On May 26, 2015, the big day finally arrived: The high school students were able to reclaim their lounge. And they were quite amazed, because Ms. Weidenbach from the Friends of the School Association had done a fantastic job. Every detail was carefully considered when furnishing the room, so it’s easy to imagine spending your break in Winona (“Don’t forget Winona”) somewhere between Chicago and Santa Monica.

On behalf of his classmates, Finn Busmann thanked Ms. Weidenbach, as well as the school principals and the managing director of Steinmühle.

Our film about the stone mill is finished!

Despite intensive preparations for her oral high school graduation exams, Isabel Weitzel holds her own against the best female hammer throwers

Isabel Weitzel headed to the 13th edition of the International Sparkassen Hammer Throw Meeting in Fränkisch-Crumbach, in southern Hesse, without much confidence; the event has traditionally brought together the national and international elite in hammer throw over Pentecost.

The lack of confidence seemed justified, as preparing for the high school graduation exams in the coming days prevented him from focusing on his hammer throw technique as usual.

However, the student from Steinmühlen, competing for TSV Jahn Treysa, surprised both herself and her coaches on her very first attempt. She demonstrated that she already has a solid grasp of the technique with the 4-kg women’s hammer and, with a throw of 51.32 m, surpassed her personal best by just under a meter. The competition was won by last year’s outstanding champion, Sophie Gimmler of LAZ Saarbrücken, with a throw of 59.65 m. Although Isabel was unable to improve on her distance, she demonstrated in her subsequent attempts that she can already consistently achieve distances around 50 meters.

She was thus able to finish in 6th place at a DLV qualifying meet featuring a top-notch field and earn her first points toward the German Junior Cup.

The 2015 Musical Evening—A Diverse Program Draws a Large Crowd to the Forum

This year’s Musical Evening on May 21 once again offered both quantity and quality.

The Grade 5 and 6 wind instrument classes provided an atmospheric start, and the concert band, conducted by Stefan Reissig, performed “Siyahamba” and “All Creatures of Our God” with their usual confidence.

The Chamber Music Club, led by F. Wemme, isn’t just about Mozart; John Coltrane’s jazz standard “Equinox” was one of the highlights of the evening.

With great dedication, the Sing&Swing group —composed of students from classes 5a and 6a—performed “Jar of Hearts” and “Love Story” on stage.

Arthur Laux gave a compelling performance on the piano Arthur Laux (9c) gave a compelling performance as a soloist and received a long round of applause following his rendition of Ludovico Einaudi’s “I Giorni.”

Mr. Wever was a must-see with the WU “Stories and Songs from Around the World”. He never fails to inspire students with the international song repertoire.

The “grand finale” was provided by the rock ’n’ rollers from the 7th-grade classes, who brought the event to a successful close with Fats Domino’s “I’m Walking.”

The weather puts everyone in a sporty spring mood at the 2015 Spring Run for 5th and 6th graders

In “perfect weather,” the 5th- and 6th-grade students were able to complete this year’s spring run.

The running event included an individual race on the 1,300-meter-long “Bootshausrunde” course, followed by relay races.

The students once again approached the event with great enthusiasm and demonstrated excellent sportsmanship by cheering each other on. As a result, the individual events produced outstanding times well under 5 minutes.

Donating Life Is Catching On—Encouraging Willingness Among Our Students to Be Tested as Organ Donors

Of the 130 eligible students in attendance, 83 signed up. DKMS officials described the fact that nearly two-thirds of those present were willing to become stem cell donors as an exceptionally high rate and a major success in the fight against blood cancer. A heartfelt thank you to everyone who participated!

In collaboration with DKMS, the German Bone Marrow Donor Registry, Steinmühle hosted an information and typing event on Monday, May 11, 2015, for all students aged 17 and older. The event was part of the “Leben spenden macht Schule” series, through which the DKMS raises awareness about blood cancer in schools and recruits potential bone marrow donors.

The students first learned how bone marrow donations can save lives and why registration in a global donor database is necessary. Next, the process of typing and the two forms of stem cell donation were explained. The stories shared by donors Steffi and Konstantin drew particular attention. The two described how bone marrow was extracted from their hip bones under general anesthesia. This complex method—which, unlike a simpler, dialysis-like procedure, is used in only about 20% of cases—had been performed on Konstantin just five days earlier.

The “fresh” donor’s excellent physical condition and his joy at having saved a life certainly contributed to the success of the subsequent registration. The registration was conducted using a cotton swab to collect a buccal swab sample and was supported by volunteers (15 teachers, two students, and one parent). After the event, the tissue samples collected were sent to a laboratory, where they were analyzed and made available for the global donor search.

The Steinmühle soccer team (Division III) easily qualified for the state finals in the “Youth Trains for the Olympics” competition

In a well-deserved victory and with a clear five-point lead in the end, our team prevailed over the competition at the regional finals in Schwalmstadt on May 6, 2015, with three wins.

With a 2-0 opening victory over the team from Kirchhain, our team solidified its well-deserved advancement to the district finals. This was followed by two more decisive victories against the teams from Frankenberg (2-0) and Felsberg (3-0).

Buoyed by great team spirit and strong team unity, the Steinmühlen team played beautiful, attacking soccer for long stretches of the game, which was ultimately rewarded with a 7-0 victory.

The team can now proudly represent Steinmühle at the state championship in Grünberg in early July.

Successful collaborations and delighted guests at Bands on Stage 2015 at the Steinmühle

At this year’s Bands on Stage At the Steinmühle, it wasn’t just the “Band 5/6” school groups that performed, “Linda Balser & Hannah Boßhammer”, the “StoneMill House Band” and the jazz musicians from “The Suited” her extraordinary musicality—including the “Couch Potatoes” from the Marburg Music School and the “Crazy Crackers” The kids from the Compass Youth Center really let loose.

First, fourteen students from grades 5 and 6 got the show off to a rousing start. From their still modest repertoire, they performed their most energetic numbers and put the audience in high spirits with “Go Down Moses,” “Stay,” and “99 Luftballons.” Mr. Wemme had quickly formed a surprisingly harmonious ensemble with the young band, and Telea Funk once again showcased her amazing voice.

And the band Compass “Crazy Crackers” followed right up with “Zuhause.” Brothers Samuel and Aaron Ruff put their singer, Can Sisamci, in the spotlight, and he gave it his all. It’s rare to see a boy his age who has such masterful control over his voice and whose performance is so compelling—thanks to the band’s manager, Tina Kuhm! The closing song, “Feeling Good,” brought audible joy to the audience.

The jazz group “The Suited” performed “I Remember Clifford” and “St. Thomas,” two challenging jazz standards from the 1950s, through which the six musicians, led by Frank Wemme, were able to demonstrate what is possible when enthusiastic students enjoy playing together over the course of many years.

In the end, it was mostly blues. The “StoneMill House Band”, whose sound is characterized by a strong horn section and the voices of Paula Stauzebach, Sonja Mecke, and Linda Balser, drew on their extensive experience to perform some of their best songs and, with a fantastic performance, provided a wonderful conclusion to an evening full of pleasant surprises.
