Theatrical Performance: “Nothing—What Matters in Life” and Scenes from *Emilia Galotti*

Archive, News

When 14-year-old Pierre Anthon leaves his class with the words, “Nothing means anything, so there’s no point in doing anything,” his classmates are in shock. Because can it really be true that nothing has any meaning? Not first love? Not learning at school? Not one’s parents’ home, siblings, faith in God, or one’s own country? Together, the students want to prove the rebellious Pierre Anthon wrong and gather everything they hold dear on a “mountain of meaning.” But what begins innocently soon turns into an experiment with no holds barred and no limits—as even animals are sacrificed, along with a finger and a girl’s innocence…

Right from the very beginning of our exploration of the play, it was clear to the 11th-grade drama class with Mr. Ullwer that the spatial concept would be a particularly important element. The audience had to be drawn in. And so, at the beginning, everyone is seated in the classroom, where Pierre Anthon stands up and poses the question of what actually matters in this world. The students drew the audience into the maelstrom of a dramatic escalation, in which the question ultimately remained unresolved, though several thought-provoking insights were offered.

As a “warm-up” for this year’s performance by the Q-Phase (11th grade), Ms. Müller’s 10th-grade drama class presented its take on Lessing’s *Emilia Galotti*. Through a series of scenes, the students demonstrated the wide range of interpretive possibilities offered by Lessing’s bourgeois tragedy.

First Science Evening at the Steinmühle

Archive, News

A successful and spectacular kickoff! For a long time, the math and science student councils had been toying with the idea of organizing something like a science fair. Dr. Töhl-Borsdorf and Dr. von der Ahe organized an evening event designed to showcase spectacular and mind-boggling projects from the classroom, and it was a huge success. A total of 32 topics and experiments were presented by 100 students, and they generated a great deal of interest among visitors.

Although the Steinmühle event calendar is already quite full, we hope this event will become a regular fixture on the calendar in the coming years.

Not only did Mr. Wemme’s musicians and Mr. Wever’s singers contribute to the event’s success, but special thanks are also due to the Steinmühle Friends Association and Café Rosenpark, which pulled off a major coup with its edible periodic table. We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to Ms. Weidenbach from the Friends of Steinmühle and Mr. Timpert from Café Rosenpark!

2016 High School Graduation Ceremony: Everyone who took the exam passed, and some did very well

Archive, News

On June 18, Steinmühle bid farewell to the graduating class of 2016. The upper-level choir, conducted by Mr. Sans, kicked off a cheerful celebration featuring entertaining speeches.

Mr. Gemmer skillfully and entertainingly drew connections between Paul McCartney’s birthday and the graduating class. Ms. Sersch and Ms. Walter read diary entries from a classmate, which brought back many memories from the class’s history. The remarks by the two class representatives, Finn Busmann and Leon Döringer, were also humorous and entertaining.

Finally, Ms. Bascha-Döringer, speaking as a parent representative, gave a very personal account of her longstanding connection to the Steinmühle.

Two high school graduates were honored for their outstanding performance on the Abitur: Leon Döringer and Adrian Hamel both earned a perfect 1.0 on their Abitur exams. The Social Award, given for exceptional social commitment both inside and outside of school, was also presented to two recipients. Finn Busmann and Leon Döringer received the award sponsored by the Friends of the School Association, which this year included a 1/4-ounce “American Eagle 2016” gold coin.

Experiential Education Weekend

Archive

Over the weekend of May 20–22, the boarding school community went on experiential education trips in four groups. The itinerary included, among other things, two city tours. One of these was a trip to the Rhine, starting in Wiesbaden. In addition to Wiesbaden, we also visited the cities of Bingen and Mainz and took a boat ride on the Rhine in glorious sunshine. In addition to historical sights, this weekend also had a musical focus—in the evenings, the participants made music together and rehearsed some wonderful pieces that they will perform at the next opportunity.

Twelve students and two teachers spent the weekend in Düsseldorf. We were immediately captivated by the city and our wonderful accommodations right on the Rhine. On Saturday, we took a guided tour of the city. We ventured away from the Kö and the Old Town and got to know a different side of the city—we were guided through the city by three former homeless men who told us about their past lives. It was very moving to learn about these men’s stories and to see the city through their eyes. And let’s be honest—who really wants a typical guided tour? After the official part, we explored the city on our own. It was Japan Day, and the city was bustling with activity. In addition to cultural traditions and culinary highlights, we saw remarkable costumes worn by cosplayers as far as the eye could see. After a traditional meal at the Düsseldorf Brauhaus, we rounded out the day on the banks of the Rhine and watched the grand finale of Japan Day: the 30-minute fireworks display over the Rhine. Before heading back to the Steinmühle, we tried out a new game format—the live escape room game. In this game, the group is locked in a room and must solve various puzzles—which in turn lead to further tasks—to ultimately find the key that lets them escape the room. And sure enough: in the last minute of the 60-minute time limit, thanks to a crucial clue from one of our group members, we were able to leave the room and successfully complete the challenge.

Captain Schäfer took another group of students on a trip up the Ohm River. Even though we weren’t sure what to expect, a barbecue and a tent in a meadow were part of the plan. After our first short trip on Friday, we were all already a little soaked. The first night was also very restless because of two parties going on around us. However, everyone was thrilled when we were treated to a fantastic breakfast and great weather on Saturday. The weather and the variety of food made this trip a real highlight. We paddled until sunset and ended the day around the campfire. On Sunday, too, as we paddled back from our campsite to Steinmühle, the mood was great. Water fights and small rapids made the final leg a relaxed and carefree conclusion.

Of course, the traditional trip to Lake Eder was a must. About 20 students were raring to go when three minibuses set off from Marburg toward the Waldecker Land region. At the foot of the Kellerwald National Park, the tents were set up so everyone could enjoy nature in a relaxed atmosphere and under perfect weather conditions. A well-rounded program of activities—ranging from sports like surfing to soccer, and relaxation with board games around the campfire—made sure no one got bored. Everyone’s physical well-being was well taken care of. The grilled treats were a huge hit even with the local “population,” as evidenced by a nighttime visit from a family of raccoons.

On Sunday, the boarding school community returned to Steinmühle feeling satisfied and full of new experiences, and they had dinner together. All in all: a successful weekend!

Boarding school students in Randa, Valais, Switzerland

Archive

On June 1, 26 students and five teachers set off for a seven-day trip to Randa in the Upper Valais.

Over the next few days, many mountains were climbed, feasts were prepared, and cozy evenings were spent at the old Augustinus Hut.

On the first day, our hikes took us, as is tradition, to the Randaer Kreuz. After a strenuous 300-meter climb and some light rain at the start, everyone arrived at the destination in good spirits and enjoyed a snack.

On the second day, we all hiked together again along the high-altitude trail from Eggen to Außerberg. The highlight of this hike was a 1.2-kilometer-long, dark tunnel through which a water pipe runs. The brave ones made their way through the tunnel without any light at all.

On the third day, the group split into three tours. One group set out for the Gletschertor (400 hm) and even came quite close to the glacier. Most of the group went to Rötiboden (650 hm) that day and descended via the Schalliberg. This involved a bit of cross-country hiking, and for most, the tour was a memorable experience. The third group crossed from Chuebodmen to Bergij (600 hm) and enjoyed a wonderful view of the hut and the 1991 rockslide during their sunny lunch break.

The fourth day was all about relaxation. We visited Brigerbad with its fantastic slide and the “river pool with a current.”

The next day, there were two hikes to choose from. From the hut, some hiked down to St. Niklaus. The others attempted to climb the Telliboden at 3,200 meters. From the Täschalp (2,200 m), the trail first led to the Täschhütte. Soon after, the snowfields became more numerous and larger, so we had to cut the hike short at just under 3,000 meters.

On the last day of the hike, some of the participants made it to the Domhütte. From there, they climbed Switzerland’s highest mountain, the Dom (4,545 m). By the end of the day, the participants on this tour had climbed nearly 1,700 meters in elevation.

The second group hiked from St. German into the Bietschtal valley to the Südrampe (300 hm), a railroad bridge.

Despite all the hardships, no one lost their motivation, even though minor injuries were unavoidable. But as we all know by now: the journey is the destination, even if it’s arduous and you’d rather just hide away.

After a wonderful time in the mountains, we were able to head back home a week later, feeling content and enriched by our experiences.

They did it again in the finals: Jan Audretsch and Justus Schneider in the Pangea Regional Finals in the Gold category!

Archive, News

The regional finals of the 2016 Pangea Competition were held nationwide on June 4, 2016, as part of seven regional final events. The final math competition and the awards ceremony took place on the same day. The regional final for Rhineland-Palatinate, Saarland, and Hesse took place at the Frankfurter Hof in Mainz.
To qualify for the regional final, participants had to place in the top 10 in their respective regions (federal state or states). The final exams began simultaneously at all locations at 11:00 a.m. and lasted 60 minutes. After the exam, the results were evaluated on site and announced at the awards ceremony. Every participant received a gift, a T-shirt, and a certificate; those who placed 1st through 10th nationwide also received cash prizes.

Our two Steinmühlen contestants were clearly having a great day and both finished in the ranks that earned them gold medals:
Justus Schneider placed second in the Hesse rankings and 29th nationwide in his grade level (9th grade).
Jan Audretsch (Class 6b) went one better and also finished as the second-best student from Hesse in his group, achieving an outstanding 4th place at the national level!

The school is proud not only of Jan and Justus’s performance, but also of all the school’s participants who did so well this year, advancing to the intermediate round.
The participants in the Kangaroo Math Competition were also exceptionally successful, with five students from Class 5a standing out in particular. (See the “NEWS” updates from April 15 and 25!)

The school congratulates the young mathematicians and will continue to count on them!

Addendum: If you’d like to get an idea of what the Pangea competition is all about, you can take a look here at the problems for 6th grade—the same ones that Jan Audretsch was given:

Steinmühle’s tennis team qualifies for the state championship

Archive, News

In Gensungen, the Steinmühle tennis team wins the WK II regional championship and, in its very first appearance, earns a spot in “Youth Trains for the Olympics” , they qualified for the state finals.

The first game against the Old State School in Korbach Our team handled the challenge with ease and clearly dominated the match. They didn’t lose a single one of their seven singles or doubles matches. The motivation they gained from this victory also spurred the players on in their second match against the Melanchthon School in Steinatal to secure the win. However, Steinmühle found itself trailing 1–2 after the first three games and was fighting for every point. The rain that had started to fall grew increasingly heavy, so an early cancellation would have been decisive for the outcome of the match. In the end, Steinmühle won 3 of the next 4 matches. Tim Thumberger’s close match, in particular, kept the team on edge until the very end. The team’s joy at qualifying for the state finals in Offenbach was immense.
Congratulations—a great achievement!

Theater Workshop 7, featuring exciting scenes and beautiful visuals

Archive, News

On the topic of Black & White Stories , the three theater groups in 7th grade came up with a wide variety of ideas:

Class 7a demonstrated with “Duplo Times – Bad Times”what happens when the Duplo family’s children are kidnapped, their friends desperately need money, a mob boss is retiring, and there are still quite a few other skeletons in the family’s closet.

Class 7b put on a funny and fast-paced production of Romeo and Juliet, in which key elements of Shakespeare’s play take a different turn—and not just geographically.

Class 7c took the audience along on a class trip to Buxtehude, which turned into a mystery-themed class trip .

Lucas Schäfer will compete in the Olympic Games

Archive, News

At the qualifying races on Lucerne’s Rotsee, Lucas Schäfer (class of 2014) and his team celebrated their greatest success to date in the lightweight four.

After a comfortable victory in the preliminary round, the DRV boat held on to second place from the start of the race, and by the time they crossed the finish line, the athletes knew for sure: “We’re going to Rio!”

This makes it clear that a series of training sessions and training camps are on the horizon leading up to the Olympics, and that Lucas will be seen very little in Marburg until then. This made it all the more delightful that Lucas recently stopped by a practice session for the young rowers at the Steinmühlen Rowing Club to talk shop with his coach and mentor, Martin Strohmenger, and to answer the young rowers’ curious questions.
