Unique wall design by artist Ulrike Krappen

Art, Music & Theater, Bilingual Elementary School, Collaborations & Partnerships, News

Turning barren into vibrant: Since February, a cheerful painting has adorned the formerly white wall at the elementary school, spanning a width of about five meters. Ulrike Krappen, the Marburg-based artist, was at work here, using paint and brushstrokes to conjure up a completely different atmosphere. Following a suggestion from Managing Director Dirk Konnertz to add some splashes of color to the interior of the Steinmühle as well, and after consulting with elementary school teachers Janine Küster and Lorraine Herrmann during the creative process, the artwork was completed in three to four days. Ulrike Krappen uses acrylic paints, sometimes wood stain and oil pastels, for her paintings. In the end, the painting depicted many heads at eye level—swimmers, divers, an Eskimo—international figures with whom the individual students could identify. “It was a pleasant experience,” Ulrike Krappen recalls, “a great atmosphere in which I was given free rein—with music and sandwiches.” The artist, who spends about six months each year in the south of France, waived her fee in support of a good cause. She offers most of her paintings for sale on her website.

Grand and magnificent: The story of the Steinmühle on the musical theater stage

Art, Music & Theater, News

It always starts with an idea—and that alone was already fantastic. The annual musical by the 5th-grade classes, this time part of the Steinmühlen Festival Week, was meant to explore history. The team led by director Ulrike Wilmsmeyer—consisting of Anna Prokop, Daniel Sans, and Frank Wemme—had our school’s 5th-grade choir perform a colorful mix of songs spanning 75 years of Steinmühlen history. With its 88 singers on the Forum stage, it was a spectacular event!

It always takes many minds and many hands to make what we later see and hear possible in the first place. That was especially true this time. Weeks earlier, Jasmine Weidenbach, president of the Steinmühle Support Association, had already been thinking about the visual impact of the young singers performing. Wearing their light-colored T-shirts printed with the logo, they presented themselves as a large group on stage, and everyone knew right away: This is where the music is! Class 6i had designed the posters, and Kira Gräser, a parent, had arranged for makeup, costumes, and stage decorations. As always, the custodial team had reliably taken care of the seating arrangements and all logistical requirements in advance. Now nothing could go wrong.

In addition to presenting music from the past 75 years, the fifth-grade classes also told a story—namely, that of a chaotic family with a stressed-out mother who, in light of her upcoming anniversary presentation, has to rely on the help of her parents (Grandma and Grandpa) and her two children. Unfortunately, things still go a bit wrong…

The Best Hits from Every Decade

The set list also reflected the events that the Steinmühle has experienced over the past few decades.

The great thing about the musical performances was that everyone in the audience knew the songs being performed. The song “Hurra hurra, die Schule brennt” referred to the fire that destroyed the school building in 1967, but despite this serious background, it still came across as a bit humorous. And when the fifth-graders on stage sing the lyrics to “Dancing Queen” as if it were the most natural thing in the world, belting it out at the top of their lungs, that’s when you really realize just what legends ABBA truly are. Performances like “Yellow Submarine” and “Wind of Change” also tied into the Steinmühlen chronicle, as one dealt with a hydroelectric power plant and flooding, and the other with the bus escape operation in the 1980s. Other stories from Steinmühlen’s history—including its numerous construction phases—were brought to life on stage through music featuring many big hits. “Aquarius (Let the Sunshine In)” was performed twice—including as an encore for this magnificent overall performance. The program also featured music by the Musical Band, composed of young musicians from grades 6 through 13, as well as a performance by two former students on the saxophone and trombone. In addition to the music, the audience was treated to four dance routines that had been choreographed during physical education classes in the four grades. The “Sound & Light” club, made up of students from grade 9, handled the lighting and sound.

“I had such a great time!” said Principal Björn Gemmer, who once again praised the dedication of everyone involved after the event. And he certainly spoke for everyone when he said that.

The bands on stage impressed the audience with their instrumental diversity, song selection, and performance

Art, Music & Theater, News

Looking back on the past six months, certain events stand out in particular.

“Bringing joy to the stage—that’s the goal of this event,” announced organizer Frank Wemme before the start of “Bands On Stage.” The performers more than lived up to this self-imposed standard that evening. The Steinmühle hosted what was arguably one of the highest-quality music events in recent memory. The photos speak for themselves.

It was a mix of participants of various ages, including performers who presented different musical genres, as well as bands whose performances had more differences than similarities. And yet, acoustically, the evening felt like a cohesive whole. Everything fell into place; nothing was left to chance. Perhaps this is exactly what joy looks like when rehearsal isn’t perceived as a burden or a source of stress. When students have been musically active for quite some time—in some cases, in the same band lineup—it suggests that personal passion is at play here. Performing were Anna Steinfeldt & Svea Turba, Larry & the Loud Tree Frogs, the 5th and 6th-grade club band, the Jazz Ensemble, and the StoneMill House Band. Students from grades 5 through 13 brought a diverse program of pop, rock, and jazz to the stage.

They could have made it easier on themselves, since the participants didn’t exactly choose easy songs. For example, they performed “Shine Bright Like a Diamond,” followed by “Smoke on the Water” for a change of pace, as well as Ed Sheeran’s “Perfect,” which gave the audience goosebumps, much like “Stay,” also by Rihanna. It was the instrumental and vocal skills, but it was also the selection of songs that made this evening such a success. “Besame mucho,” “Feeling Good,” “Killing Me Softly,” “Rocket Man”—all these pieces simply sound top-notch when the music and vocals are truly on point. It was a major challenge that the performers took on—and they rose to it! The audience rewarded every performance with well-deserved applause throughout, and Tobias Karlein from the school administration team was also thrilled. Guys and girls, you could even perform this program for an outside audience!

The musical performances that evening were visually enhanced by our reliable “Sound & Light” team, consisting of Christian and Jonathan.

Rehearsing Together, Performing Together: Joint Performances by the Steinmühle Concert Band and the Army Band

Art, Music & Theater, Collaborations & Partnerships, News

A chamber concert by the Kassel Army Band is of exceptional musical quality. It’s no wonder, then, that the Steinmühlenforum was well attended for the benefit concert on February 20, and that the members of the Steinmühlen Concert Band, together with their conductor Stephan Reissig, took the opportunity to hold a joint workshop.

Talent and practice, practice, practice—these are the secrets to success for instrumentalists, and perhaps the most important ones. Inspiration, role models, and tips provide additional motivation. And even if you’re not quite at the same skill level, you can always learn something from the pros.

That was exactly the plan of the Steinmühlen concert band, which had already held its workshop with the musical guests from Kassel the day before.

Right at the start of the concert, our students showcased what they had learned in two pieces performed together. They were sure to receive applause from the audience in the packed forum. Naturally, Steinmühlen concert band director Stephan Reissig and Senior Master Sergeant Andreas Alschinger, who each conducted their respective musicians, were also delighted with the successful performances.

A Journey Through Musical Eras

The rest of the evening was a journey through various musical eras, performed by the Chamber Orchestra of the Army Music Corps under the overall direction of Staff Sergeant Christian Schmidt. First, the musicians delved into the 1920s and presented Erwin Schulhoff’s *Divertissement*. The dissonances in the piece were not always in line with what our ears—accustomed to harmony—are used to hearing in everyday life, but the performances aptly reflected the music of Schulhoff, who, as a contemporary of Arnold Schoenberg, was one of the most internationally successful composers of the 1920s.

“The Show Must Go On,” they said afterward, and the audience found themselves enjoying music by the iconic British band Queen, performed by the clarinet ensemble. The program continued with a variety of pieces, including works by Elton John and Charles Koechlin’s Sonatine Modale, Op. 155, performed by the flute and clarinet duo, before the brass ensemble took the stage. Here, too, the audience was treated to a mix: the program included “Viva la Vida” by Coldplay, “Lullaby” by Christoph Moschberger, and “Pirates of the Caribbean” by Klaus Badelt, arranged by Adrian Wagner. Solo artists regularly perform in the chamber music concerts of the Kassel Army Band. The concert program also included the trombone solo “Csardas” by Vittorio Monti, performed by Master Sergeant Sebastian Stricker.

An extremely varied evening came to a close, during which the audience—composed of music fans from the Steinmühlen community and members of the hosting Rotary Club of Marburg—was treated to an acoustic journey through the music of various decades. Principal Björn Gemmer thanked host Sergeant First Class Mareike Zaretzke and all the performers for this delightful experience. The fact that the event also supported a good cause—namely, donating the remaining proceeds to the Parents’ Initiative for Children with Leukemia and Cancer as well as to the Steinmühle Friends Association—made the evening all the more special.

Listen, enjoy, celebrate: Revue thrills hundreds at the Forum

Art, Music & Theater, News

The second edition of the revue—featuring music, singing, storytelling, and drama—was a huge success: With over 180 participants, the team led by musical director and cultural affairs officer Daniel Sans had already anticipated a large turnout and had spread the performances across three dates, distributing reserved seating tickets. Despite all the preparations, there was a huge turnout—so many people wanted to experience the performances by the Steinmühlen high school students!

Each event began with three audio samples that had been produced by the students the previous year. These were excerpts from stories written by high school students and read by middle school students. This gave the audience a glimpse into the content of a story collection that will soon be available for purchase. In 19 contributions, the students gave free rein to their creativity in writing. The title of the book, produced under the direction of Melisande Lauginiger and Kristina Sokoli, is *Monsters, Carrots, and Metamorphoses*. — Well, doesn’t that pique your curiosity!

Next, Melisande Lauginiger’s DS Group 11 presented an acoustically and visually impressive piece inspired by Kafka’s “Little Fable,” titled “…The World That Is Growing Ever Smaller.” As an interlude, the audience then enjoyed a performance by Music Classes 11 and 12, led by Ulrike Wilmsmeyer and Kerstin Itzenhäuser, featuring large samba drums. The seven-member ensemble performed with both focus and enthusiasm! This was followed by DS Class 12, led by Ines Vielhaben, which presented an excerpt from Büchner’s *Woyzeck*. The full production of this play will take place in June—we can’t wait!

Stay Active with Body Percussion

During an intermission, this year’s graduating class treated the audience to snacks and refreshments. At the start of the second half, they performed the famous “Cup Song,” which was demonstrated on stage using cups and accompanied by a solo vocal performance by Sabrina Ben Amour.

This was followed by a series of scenes in the style of Bertolt Brecht that highlighted social injustices—performed by Dagmar Müller’s DS Course 13. This performance received a particularly warm round of applause!

As an interlude, Ulrike Wilmsmeyer’s music class then got the audience involved, encouraging the entire hall to join in a body percussion session.

The finale featured Olaf Roth’s high school band together with Daniel Sans’s high school choir; Sans was also responsible for the evening’s successful concept. The audience was treated to rock, pop, musical theater, and film music by Leonard Cohen, Coldplay, Miley Cyrus, Journey, and ABBA.

The hit show “Revue,” now in its second year, once again brought the Steinmühlen motto—“A Community That Supports”—to life. Everyone in the audience surely noticed just how much music brings people together.

Sewing Project Showcases Diversity and Community

Art, Music & Theater, Languages & International Affairs, News

Steinmühle has always been a place of internationalism, diversity, and tolerance. Our international students are part of a vibrant community characterized by openness to the world. This is what Principal Björn Gemmer wrote on this occasion to call for a demonstration in support of democracy and against right-wing incitement and violence.

In Class 6i, in addition to German and English, the students also speak Russian, Ukrainian, Arabic, Turkish, Polish, Italian, Dutch, Portuguese, Flemish, Persian, Marathi, and Kurdish at home, according to Theresa Großer, head of the International High School Program. This linguistic diversity reflects the international character of our school.

To celebrate this diversity, art teacher Ines Vielhaben came up with a collaborative project for the entire class as part of the “Clothes Make the Man” initiative. The planned mural is intended to symbolize the natural diversity and sense of community among the global citizens within this class. Each student in the class sewed and decorated their own leaf, fruit, or insect onto this tree. The photo was taken by Gisela Glatzl, who has been actively supporting the sewing project as a volunteer for many years.

Feliz Navidad: An All-Around Successful Winter Concert

Art, Music & Theater, News

In front of a packed house, the musicians of the Steinmühle came together for their winter concert. For the 5th-grade wind instrument class—which has only had its instruments since October—it was their first concert in front of a large audience. The group was accompanied by Andreas Jamin on the piano. And with the songs “Morgen kommt der Weihnachtsmann” and “Jingle Bells,” a festive Christmas atmosphere quickly took hold.

The Christmas tree sparkled in the auditorium, and the students shone just as brightly as they played their instruments. Following an introduction by music teacher Anna Prokop, who co-hosted the event with Ulrike Wilmsmeyer, Sophie Menzler and Salome Kuppe captivated the audience with their performances on the violin and grand piano. Next up was Jakob Bieber on the cello, also accompanied on the piano by Salome Kuppe. Konstantin Franz also gave a brilliant performance on the piano, followed by Nina Marko, who treated the audience to an encore.

The song “Snowman”—originally by Sia—was a delight to hear, performed at the Steinmühle by the trio of Anna Steinfeldt, Chiara Sheye, and Svea Turba. The performers had to make up for a few absences due to illness that evening; this was the case, for example, with the Stonemill Brass, who, under the direction of Andreas Jamin, nevertheless brought their performance to a successful conclusion with just three brass players. This was followed by a performance by Wind Class 6, who played a piece together with the concert band, and then a performance by the concert band on its own. All three program items were conducted by Stephan Reissig.

For the grand finale, all the performers sang Jose Feliciano’s famous Christmas song, “Feliz Navidad,” with its catchy chorus, “I wanna wish you a Merry Christmas”—accompanied on instruments by Frank Wemme, Anna Prokop, and Stephan Reissig, and joined in by the entire audience with singing and clapping.

As Principal Björn Gemmer noted in his closing remarks, the audience experienced a truly impressive performance and an atmospheric event that was also technically well-executed thanks to the Sound & Light team led by Matthäus Otte. As a token of appreciation, Dirk Lange, a member of the school administration, presented roses to all the soloists and a small bouquet to Ulrike Wilmsmeyer in recognition of her work in putting together the program and organizing the event, which she handled with her usual expertise.

The Christmas Party Is Back—A Successful Comeback

Art, Music & Theater, Events & Celebrations, Life at Boarding School, News

Anyone who has been following Steinmühle for some time is likely familiar with the boarding school’s Christmas party. It’s a highlight every year, and after the pandemic years, it was once again held as the classic celebration. And although the last few Christmas parties—held as part of a cozy Christmas market in the boarding school courtyard—were a complete success, the students who have been living at the boarding school for some time were especially looking forward to this long-awaited comeback. As soon as the decision was made to revive the old traditions, outfits were planned and potential program items were developed. And so, weeks of rehearsals and anticipation were behind us, culminating last weekend in a successful Christmas party.

A sense of eager anticipation, a relaxed atmosphere, and a touch of nervousness—the curtain was closed, and the young people and guests in the audience waited, filled with curiosity, for the evening to begin. Soft Christmas music playing in the background set the stage for what was to come. Then the first notes of Etude Op. 8, No. 12 rang out on the piano, played by Mingzhou. “It was very impressive,” student Fabian said afterward. From that moment on, it was clear that the program would live up to every expectation. After a welcome speech by the boarding school administration, high school seniors Sarah and Fabian guided the audience through the program, which had something for everyone. In addition to a Christmas-themed tour of the Steinmühle, which transported the audience’s thoughts to a snow-covered landscape and thus set the mood for the celebration, some of the young people had prepared their own poems and poetry slams, which they performed. They gave the audience the chance to experience the many facets of the beautiful—and sometimes somewhat stressful—Christmas season. In addition, well-known fairy tales were reimagined in a humorous play and woven into a completely new and exciting story. Who could have guessed that a protest against wolves would suddenly break out while Hans and Little Hans were stomping through the forest together with Snow White? Time and again, hearty laughter could be heard from the audience as the dwarfs and the little goat ran through the hall shouting loudly. Andersen’s fairy tale “The Little Match Girl” was also adapted and given a completely new interpretation. With the help of a shadow puppet show, the guests were invited to follow the girl on her very personal journey to the stone mill.

A good Christmas party always includes a little music, and there was no shortage of it at the Steinmühle. Many musical performances and acts enlivened the evening and gave it a very special atmosphere. A small mini-orchestra sang about being home for Christmas, while another group performed a song by the Japanese duo Yoasobi, and of course, a dance performance was also part of the program.

After the successful performances, the assistant boarding school director—who was clearly thrilled with the program—invited everyone involved back onto the stage, where they were greeted with thunderous applause and a standing ovation. All the young people who had worked together to put on the evening’s performance were also thrilled. For Luisa and Janna, the stage show was the highlight of the evening.

Afterward, the guests made their way to the festively decorated dining hall, which was brightly lit by strings of lights and the glow of candles. A cozy atmosphere filled the room as the kitchen served a multi-course feast. The meal was accompanied by a quiz that included funny anecdotes from Steinmühle, among other things, and everyone eagerly joined in. In addition, the boarding school council had organized a Secret Santa exchange beforehand, so a small gift-giving ceremony could take place in keeping with the Christmas spirit.

Everyone was in high spirits at the party that followed as well. “The students were clearly having a great time,” said Sandrine, a teacher for whom this was also her first Christmas party, looking back. “And so were we as a team. It was just really wonderful.” Photos were taken, and above all, everyone danced happily.

The American author Edna Ferber once said, “Christmas is not a season. It’s a feeling.” And that contemplative and festive feeling of Christmas was everywhere at our boarding school celebration.

We would like to thank all the young people at the boarding school, the entire teaching staff, everyone who pitched in, the kitchen staff, and, of course, all our guests for a successful return of the Steinmühle Christmas party, and we are already looking forward to welcoming you back to the Steinmühle next year!

Workshop on Library Management

Art, Music & Theater, Collaborations & Partnerships, News

The State Working Group for School Libraries in Hesse (LAG) visited the Steinmühle school library on Monday, November 6, with its LAG Café and workshop. From 4:00 to 6:00 p.m., interested teachers with library responsibilities and other school library staff from various schools in Hesse had the opportunity to exchange ideas over coffee, cake, and snacks. The Steinmühle employs its own librarian, Katrin Reichel, to handle all aspects of library operations; she herself is a member of the LAG School Libraries advisory board. She welcomed a total of 12 attendees, who asked questions of the presenters—Matthias Matzen, a teacher at the Gesamtschule Gießen Ost, a member of the LAG Executive Board and an employee of the IT Service Center for School Libraries in Hesse, and received various tips and tricks. Without exception, the guests were enthusiastic about this accessible event and the opportunity to network, and they hope the event will be repeated soon.

Art Class 11 is dedicated to Ubbelohde’s landscapes

Art, Music & Theater, News

In the spacious rooms of the Museum of Art and Cultural History at the University of Marburg, the aspiring artists are focusing on Ubbelohde’s landscapes, some of which capture precisely this autumnal weather in a painterly way.

Working in front of the originals, they sketch the slanting trees, reflections on the shore, and promising cloud formations, attempting to translate Ubbelohde’s expressive brushwork into their pencil drawings.

Judging by the pictures, Ubbelohde must have been a rather introverted and melancholic fellow, the students speculate during the concluding reflection discussion with their teacher, Ines Vielhaben.
