On July 1, the school administration invited the new fifth-graders and their parents to a relaxed coffee gathering. As far as the new school year is concerned, the goal was to ensure that no unanswered questions were carried over into the summer break. Principals Gemmer and Holly, along with Academic Director Wemme, provided an update on the organizational planning for the upcoming school year, and the teachers for the incoming fifth-grade class introduced themselves.

While prospective students enjoyed an interesting entertainment program, their parents had the opportunity to ask questions of the teachers, the school administration, the parent representatives, the student representatives, and Ms. Weidenbach from the “Friends of the School” association.

The wind ensemble, led by Mr. Jamin, gave a lively performance that showed just how much can be learned in ten months.

Afterward, the young students in the current 5th-grade classes couldn’t resist taking a closer look at the new (co-)residents of Centrum 5/6.

On June 18, 2015, 28 students from four Marburg schools (grades 5 and 6) gathered at the Steinmühle to compete in the Marburg School Chess Championship.

After 3 hours of play, thrilling duels, many beautiful moves, and well-executed checkmate situations, the moment had finally arrived, and the Martin team–Luther–The school earned the title of 2015 Marburg School Chess Champion.

But it was a long road to get there. “Chess is the fastest game in the world because you have to organize thousands of thoughts every second.” This quote from Albert Einstein was enthusiastically put into practice by the players, who set to work, to demonstrate their skills and compete against one another.

After a tournament that was very fair from start to finish, the final result could hardly have been any closer. The last round of play was ultimately the deciding factor, which teams would take home the highly coveted trophies, since everything was still up in the air until then. The young chess players performed brilliantly right up to the end, and so we would like to congratulate all the teams on their successful participation:

1st Place: Martin Luther School I (Alexandru Despa, Bosko van Andel, Philipp Grein, Alina Löffler)

2nd place: Steinmühle II School Camp (Finn Krausch, Jan Audretsch, Tilmann Molzberger, Yasin Yilmaz, Fabian Diedrich)

3rd place: Steinmühle I Rural School Camp (Spartak Gevorkyan, Urs Seifart, Luka Hartmann, Richard Henkel, Paul Anton Schmölz)

4th place: Richtsberg Comprehensive School (Tim Josephs, Sascha Grefenstein, Taha Baroudi, Hamse Baroudi)

5th place: Carl-Strehl-Schule / Richtsberg Comprehensive School (Kolja Schorat, Nico Waldmann, Daryll Wirth, Keanu Sander, Mika Struck)

6th place: Martin Luther School II (Daria Dersch, Lili Kern, Maximilian Kruntz, Leon Zeiss)

Special mention should be made here of the students from Richtsberg Gesamtschule and Carl-Strehl-Schule, who formed a joint team to enable as many people as possible to play.

While dethe tournament, , the games played could be analyzed again in an adjoining room. The Steinmühle had provided plenty of drinks and snacks, and anyone who felt like getting a little exercise during the break could let off some steam on the sports field next door.

And so a successful day finally came to an end—a day spent discussing our own games and those we’d watched, celebrating our victories, and analyzing our mistakes in our losses, all with the goal of doing even better next year.

All participants had high praise and appreciation for the organization and execution of the tournament, especially for the prudent tournament management by Daniel Allig, our chess expert and club leader.

While the intermediate round of the Pangea Competition was already exceptionally successful for Steinmühle, with ten students participating, it was particularly gratifying that two math prodigies, Jan Audretsch and Carolin Mauersberger, qualified for the final round on June 13, 2015.

The two of them were happy about it, but didn’t seem particularly surprised and said they thought they had a shot at making it to the finals. And they weren’t wrong:

• Jan Audretsch achieved a result that placed him first in Hesse and seventh in Germany.
• Carolin Mauersberger finished 4th in Hesse and 38th in Germany based on her results.

On May 26, 2015, the big day finally arrived: The high school students were able to reclaim their lounge. And they were quite amazed, because Ms. Weidenbach from the Friends of the School Association had done a fantastic job. Every detail was carefully considered when furnishing the room, so it’s easy to imagine spending your break in Winona (“Don’t forget Winona”) somewhere between Chicago and Santa Monica.

On behalf of his classmates, Finn Busmann thanked Ms. Weidenbach, as well as the school principals and the managing director of Steinmühle.

This year’s Musical Evening on May 21 once again offered both quantity and quality.

The Grade 5 and 6 wind instrument classes provided an atmospheric start, and the concert band, conducted by Stefan Reissig, performed “Siyahamba” and “All Creatures of Our God” with their usual confidence.

The Chamber Music Club, led by F. Wemme, isn’t just about Mozart; John Coltrane’s jazz standard “Equinox” was one of the highlights of the evening.

With great dedication, the Sing&Swing group —composed of students from classes 5a and 6a—performed “Jar of Hearts” and “Love Story” on stage.

Arthur Laux gave a compelling performance on the piano Arthur Laux (9c) gave a compelling performance as a soloist and received a long round of applause following his rendition of Ludovico Einaudi’s “I Giorni.”

Mr. Wever was a must-see with the WU “Stories and Songs from Around the World”. He never fails to inspire students with the international song repertoire.

The “grand finale” was provided by the rock ’n’ rollers from the 7th-grade classes, who brought the event to a successful close with Fats Domino’s “I’m Walking.”
