Visitors from Spain, Hungary, and France

Archive, News

In April, a group of students, accompanied by Ms. Ramos-Iglesias and Ms. Montenegro-Auque, visited Granada, and their experience there was almost entirely positive. It was wonderful that we were then able to welcome our Spanish friends to our school in June. Of course, we did our very best to return the warm welcome we received in Granada, and we feel that we were quite successful in doing so.

This year, 10 Hungarian students once again took part in a three-week course on the German language and culture at our school. The scholarship recipients had previously participated in a nationwide competition and were selected based on their strong performance in German class.

During their stay, they not only got to know school life at Steinmühle, but also went on several field trips, for example to Frankfurt, Kassel, and the Rhine.

The continued implementation of this nationwide popular program run by the Pedagogical Exchange Service is only possible if schools and host families remain highly committed to fostering international exchanges. We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone involved.

A visitor from Maine-et-Loire

It’s not just about group exchanges; we also regularly host individual students. For the past few weeks, we’ve had Thérèse Conchin and Marie Cazaux visiting us. They’re both 16 years old, already speak German quite well, and come from the Maine-et-Loire department (49). They’re really enjoying their time with us and have quickly made friends.

The dual-cohort class is graduating—G8 and G9 high school seniors receive their diplomas

Archive, News

This year’s high school graduation ceremony took place in an unusual setting: the university cafeteria. But it wasn’t just the venue that was unusual; there were also a number of other notable features: The dual graduating class achieved remarkable results, with four students earning the top grade of 1.0, and the class’s overall average grade was also impressive. The entertaining ceremony, which was marked by a consistently cheerful and friendly atmosphere, featured musical performances, speeches, and award presentations. In their speeches, the teachers looked back with praise and appreciation on their time with this graduating class. Representatives of the parents and students emphasized that choosing Steinmühle had been an extraordinarily important and fortunate decision.

Colorful Entrance Area

Archive, News

The artwork by graffiti artist Hagen Fisbeck in the entrance area of the Steinmühle now has some artistic company: colorful posts along the sidewalk in front of the Forum and a ceramic installation mounted on the Forum’s entrance wall. The posts are related to the current State Garden Show in Gießen. The commission to design the wall had been left by architect Oesterle in 2006, who had placed a seemingly functionless concrete block next to the Forum.

Both projects were developed over the past few months by the artist and art teacher Ms. Vielhaben, together with students in grades 5, 7, and 11. The ceramic works received active support from Ms. Schmitz, the director of the Pottery and Mosaic Club.

Visitors from Ireland

Archive, News

For quite some time, Steinmühle had been looking for a way to set up an exchange program with a school in the British Isles in addition to its U.S. exchange program. Now, St. Augustine’s, a school comparable in size to ours in Dungarvan (a small town of about 10,000 residents on the southeastern coast of Ireland)!

For the first time, a two-week exchange is taking place, involving 10 Irish and 10 German 10th-grade students. The Irish students are currently visiting and are doing their very best to put their German language skills (acquired over five years of study) into practice. The return visit to Dungarvan will take place before or during the fall break. We hope that many more exchanges like this will follow! CE’AD MILE FAILTE!

Bands on Stage on May 26

Archive, News

It’s great when you can play an instrument or sing well and enjoy doing so. But it’s often only really fun when you can make music with others and have an audience every now and then. You could see just how much fun our students have doing this not only at the Musical Evening in mid-May, but once again in a special way at Bands on Stage.

Once again, the rock band from grades 8 and 9—Lena Schlegel, Linda Balser, and Hannah Boßhammer—as well as the StoneMill House Band performed with cool confidence, professionalism, and enthusiasm. But the big surprise of the evening was the band club from grades 5 and 6, led by frontwoman Talea Funk. Talea and her band performed on stage with a confidence and musicality that first astonished the audience and then drew enthusiastic applause.

Lisa Kemena at the Inventors’ Lab in Darmstadt

Archive, News

The ZFC Inventors’ Lab has been in existence for 15 years now. It is organized by the Center for Chemistry in Bensheim, Merck in Darmstadt, the Chemical Industry Fund (FCI), and the Technical University of Darmstadt, and is supported by the Hessian state government. Lisa Kemena qualified for this event from among nearly two hundred applicants.

Together with her research group, Lisa was tasked with “semiconductor synthesis via chain growth reactions and testing an organic light-emitting diode.” Under the guidance of chemists from Darmstadt University of Technology, the group had just under a week to complete the task, which included designing an OLED (organic LED).

At the end of the week (May 16, 2014), the young scientists—as guests of Merck—presented their findings to a large audience of experts. For the sixteen participants in the Inventors’ Lab, there were no winners or losers, but rather detailed feedback from mentors, who were consistently impressed.

In the end, Lisa Kemena was still able to celebrate being awarded one of four W. von Hohenheim Special Prizes.

Students at Steinmühle Succeed in Math Competitions

Archive, News

At this year’s Pangea Mathematics Competition, held under the auspices of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, six 7th-grade students distinguished themselves with above-average performance.

Adrian Hamel was also successful as the school champion in the Mathematics Competition E for schools in Hesse. Congratulations!

In the top photo (from left): Svenja Winter (7b), Carolin Mauersberger (7b), Justus Schneider (7a), Adrian Hamel (10c), Christian Eifert (7a), Lasse C. Zimmer (7a), and Johannes M. Korn (7a).

The six students in 7th grade not only successfully participated in the Pangea competition, but also qualified for the intermediate round in Gießen.

Based on the results from the preliminary round,

  • Lasse Zimmer placed 2nd (out of 525 participants) in Hesse (39th out of 15,000 in Germany),
  • Johannes Korn placed third in Hesse (56th in Germany)
  • Caroline Mauersberger, 6th (101st)
  • Justus Schneider, 8th (140th)
  • Christian Eifert, 14th place (250th)
  • Svenja Winter, 18th place (350th)

In total, 6 students from Steinmühle ranked among the top 20 in all of Hesse.

On Saturday, May 10, all students took part in the intermediate round in Giessen. Unlike the preliminary round, they had to solve 10 tricky problems here. Caroline, Justus, and Christian solved 9 problems correctly and have therefore been invited to the awards ceremony on June 22 at the Kongresshalle in Giessen.
(They missed the finals solely because of the competition format, since points are deducted for incorrect answers but not for failing to answer a question.)

Students from our school also achieved excellent results in the Kangaroo Competition:

Jakob Schul from Class 5c won first prize (with a score of 95), while Evelyn Damer (5b), Deciel Shongo (6a), Marie Unsicker (6c), and Alexander Schlitzer (8a) each received third prize. Marie Unsicker also made the longest “kangaroo jump” (the most consecutive correctly solved problems) and won a T-shirt as a result.

New Drinking Fountain at Centrum 5/6

Archive, News

That was the one thing still missing from the otherwise superbly equipped Centrum: a drinking fountain. The Marburg Rotary Club and the Friends of the School Association made it possible for students in grades 5 and 6 to enjoy a water fountain that not only meets the highest design standards but also guarantees germ-free water at all times thanks to its Hygiene Solution System.

On May 15, 2014, Ms. Leimbach, president of the Rotary Club of Marburg, and Ms. Weidenbach from the Steinmühle Support Association presented the fountain to the students, who immediately expressed their gratitude with a well-done presentation on the topic of water. This made it clear once again: Water isn’t just for drinking.

Musical Evening on May 15, 2014

Archive, News

The wide range of musical talent was once again on display at the Steinmühle’s traditional Musical Evening, and everyone gave it their all: from the young brass players in grades 5 to the experienced teachers in the music department.

Ten ensembles and soloists presented a varied program—featuring plenty of wind instruments, string instruments, harps, piano, percussion, guitar, and many singers in various choirs.
