Mr. Wilhelm Stehling Retires After More Than 30 Years at the Steinmühle

Archive, News

At the beginning of the year, Mr. Stehling retired. What this means for the school was once again brought home to everyone during his farewell ceremony on February 14, 2014: Not only is the school losing a valued teacher who has left his mark on three subject departments (physical education, geography, and music)—notably through the establishment of the wind instrument class—but everyone also appreciated his sense of humor, his optimism, and his storytelling talent in everyday school life.

“Willi” Stehling, along with his colleagues and longtime friends, enjoyed a celebration organized by “his” student councils, which everyone found enjoyable.

Archive, News

On February 11, 2014, representatives of the Friends and Supporters of the Steinmühle Association (Freunde und Förderer der Steinmühle e.V.)

Another donation was presented at the school library: With approximately 1,000 €, Ms. Schäfer, the librarian at Steinmühle, was able to purchase books, DVDs of literary adaptations, and audiobooks.

The two student body presidents, Franziska Busmann and Anna von Bethmann, along with other student representatives, gratefully accepted the donation.

The donation was presented by members of the Friends’ Association’s board of directors: Christoph Potthast (vice chair), Carmen Schumacher (board member), Uwe Posingies (treasurer), and Christian Finance (secretary).

Parent-Teacher Evening with Jan-Uwe Rogge on the topic of puberty on February 5, 2014

Archive, News

This year’s Parents’ Night was particularly entertaining because the speaker, Jan-Uwe Rogge, didn’t give the usual lecture on the topic; instead, he delivered a barrage of punchlines by describing, exaggerating, and commenting on everyday situations from adolescence.

Everyone got a piece of the action: the worried mothers, the clueless fathers, and the unbearable teenagers. In between, a piece of advice or two actually came through.

All in all, it was an entertaining educational evening that the many attendees thoroughly enjoyed!

Proper Table Manners

Archive, News

Part of the need for guidance is the question: “How should I behave, and how can I make a good impression?”

To this end, Ms. Ramos Iglesias offers a course for interested students that leads to a certificate upon completion.

Dozens of students have signed up for the “Table Manners” meal on Wednesday in the Steinmühle dining hall. The initiative seems to have hit the mark, as the students are eager to acquire these social skills. At the table, everyone addresses each other formally and learns proper posture and how to speak appropriately while eating. The program also includes reflecting on table manners in other countries and how fundamentally important polite behavior is.

This introductory course consists of four lunches. At the end, students receive stylish glasses, candles, and a certificate of achievement.

Cheers, and enjoy your meal!

Steinmühlen Rower Achieves Breakthrough

Archive, News
Success in the DRV Endurance Race and Selection for the National Team

On the Dortmund-Ems Canal last Saturday in November, Lucas Schäfer (RuS Steinmühle) broke through and achieved an outstanding result with a 12th-place finish in the long-distance race organized by the German Rowing Association (DRV) in Dortmund.
At the end of his first season in the open men’s lightweight division of the DRV, the talented 12th-grader built on the successes of his junior years and was selected for the national squad following the U-23 national coaching course in December 2013.

Congratulations and best wishes for the 2014 rowing season!

Crafts and Baking for Tsunami Victims

Archive, News

The fifth graders dedicated their Advent celebration on December 16, 2013, to a charitable cause and donated their crafts and treats—which they had baked at home—for a school sale (on December 18, during the long recesses and the extended lunch break). The proceeds will go to tsunami victims in the Philippines.

2013 Christmas Concert

Archive, News

This year’s Steinmühle Christmas concert had a festive atmosphere at times, especially during the “shadowy” Christmas story presented by Class 6 and the closing song “Gloria in excelsis Deo,” which everyone sang together.

Cultural Evening at the Steinmühle

Archive, News

At the Cultural Evening, students took to the stage to present what they had prepared for performance together with their teachers in class and in extracurricular clubs. This year, the audience was treated to a particularly appealing program: “Murderous Shadows,” a reading and shadow play performance by students from 6th grade, a rousing Zumba performance by younger students, the “Fire Magic” show with smoke effects by the chemistry students from 6th and 12th grades, and high-level examples from the English class of 5th grade, Class B.

The two performances by students in the drama program were outstanding. While Mr. Finance’s group explored the concept of “staying power,” Ms. Lauginiger’s drama troupe (pictured here) presented their interpretation of Kafka’s “The Metamorphosis.” Both were very impressive! The horn section of the StoneMill Houseband’s jazz ensemble provided much-applauded musical highlights with four skillfully performed jazz standards.

YOU FM Band Battle on November 8, 2013

    Archive, News

Once again this year, the StoneMill Houseband—with some new members—was able to compete in the front row at the YOU FM Band Battle. Once again, the stage truck rolled onto the grounds on the morning of November 8; the stage was set up, a sound check was done, and then a short concert was performed during the second break. The fact that the band didn’t win the weekly contest with their upbeat and cheerful version of “Little Talks” didn’t take away from the fun of performing in front of their classmates in the courtyard—and the new vocal section also passed its “baptism by fire.”

Thanks to all the “voters” for your support!

Rowing Takes Center Stage at the Steinmühle Fall Festival

    Archive, News
The christening of the new GIG eight was one of the highlights of the annual festival

About 900 visitors celebrated the Steinmühle Boarding School’s Fall Festival. Alongside the students, the school and boarding school administration, the teaching staff, and members of the school’s support association—as well as the newly founded Friends of the School Association—made for an eventful day under bright sunshine. Through this annual festival, the active school and boarding school community introduced itself and extended a special invitation to former Steinmühle students to visit the boarding school. According to boarding school director Stefan Lange, the Fall Festival is an event for the whole family. Visitors were treated to many culinary delights, a colorful stage program featuring numerous musical performances, and a wide variety of hands-on activities, such as rowing sessions, sports games, painting workshops, and pony rides. “For the boarding students, the festival means work first and foremost,” Lange noted. They serve as hosts and take on various responsibilities before, during, and after the event.

The highlight of the school festival was the christening of the new GIG eight by Filip Adamski, the 2012 Olympic champion in the German men’s eight. The newly acquired rowing boat is the result of a joint project between the Steinmühle Boarding School and the Institute for the Blind (Blista), supported by the city government and Sparkasse Marburg-Biedenkopf, with the purchase costs shared by both schools. Rowing is firmly established in the curriculum at both Steinmühle and the Blindenstudienanstalt. According to the school association’s president, Dr. Gerhard Pätzold, the new boat is intended to expand the range of activities offered by both schools. Apart from the athletic aspect, the sense of community among peers and the goal of inclusion play a major role. “The inclusion eight will ensure long-term cooperation between the two schools,” said Pätzold. The boat allows four Steinmühle students to row alongside four students from Blista. The new eight gives the students involved in the project the opportunity to participate in competitions and regattas under the guidance of their coach, Martin Strohmenger.

In the presence of numerous representatives from the worlds of business, politics, and sports, the guest of honor from the Rudern und Sport Steinmühle (RuS) club christened the boat “Blind Date,” a name intended to highlight the successful partnership between the two schools.
