New Exhibition at the Steinmühle: Reflecting on Human Rights and Their Foundations

Art, Music & Theater, Ecology and Sustainability, News, Politics, Business & Responsibility

A new exhibition at the Steinmühle, featuring works in the atrium, the Centrum, and the main building, is themed “Human Rights.” It was created by Thomas Gebauer, an artist and activist whose previous exhibition, “People, Diversity, Future,” was very well received.

“The exhibition should be seen as a tool of the ‘Future Workshop: Democracy and Education,'” says art teacher Ines Vielhaben. Students in her 10th-grade elective course (WU) “Kulturallee” were actively involved in the arrangement and installation of the exhibition.

The Human Rights exhibition consists of 28 large-format photographs that visually incorporate human rights concepts in both English and Arabic. They depict scenes and situations related to the democracy movement (2011–12) during the Arab Spring in Sfax, Marburg’s sister city in Tunisia, and address the Tunisian people’s call for freedom, democracy, and justice during that time. The photographs by Thomas Gebauer are complemented by posters from Basic Rights – Survival Goods poster exhibition, which presents the theme of democracy as the foundation, perspective, and prerequisite for a dignified participation in life based on freedom and justice, and illustrates access to essential resources for survival in a global context.

Can be incorporated into lessons

The exhibition focuses on the 30 fundamental human rights enshrined by the UN in 1948 in the context of resources essential for life and survival, such as water, food, education, health, and justice. The entire human rights exhibition was produced by its initiator, Thomas Gebauer, as a high-quality, portable exhibition module printed on truck tarps, so that it can be borrowed by schools and educational institutions throughout the Marburg-Biedenkopf district along with accompanying teaching materials.

“The exhibition,” says Steinmühlen art teacher Ines Vielhaben, “can be incorporated into subject-specific instruction in various ways.” Possible options include project days, themed visits, and block-schedule visits for all grade levels, as well as an evening event as a cultural program featuring a slide presentation followed by a discussion. If you are interested, Thomas Gebauer is available as the direct contact (agent21 Zukunftswerkstatt, email: thomas.a.gebauer@gmail.com).

Remarks We Made: CD Available

Art, Music & Theater, News

It’s not often that a school band displays as much motivation and love for music as the Stonemill House Band and our jazz ensemble do. To help us remember this in the years to come, we wanted to document our work together. In January 2020, we were able to record our program—consisting of the songs “Romantically Helpless,” “I Don’t Need No Doctor,” “Whisper Not,” and “A Remark You Made,” which we had arranged a year earlier in Wolfhausen. With the wonderful support of Werner Eismann, we created a professionally produced CD that captures our time together. Anyone who would like a copy can pick it up at the school office for a nominal fee.

Advanced Art Class: New Exhibition at the Climbing Gym

Art, Music & Theater, News

At last, it’s here: the new exhibition at the Marburg Climbing Gym, created by the Steinmühle high school’s advanced art class. Since mid-December 2020, the class’s new drawings of climbing hands have been on display there. As early as 2018, art related to mountaineering from an elective course taught by Ines Vielhaben was exhibited here for the first time. The response and demand from climbers in the German Alpine Club (DAV) were so great that, even during the COVID-19 pandemic, a class once again created and designed several works specifically for the climbing gym.

“The unusually long formats are dictated by the Plexiglas panels embedded in the climbing walls,” reports Ines Vielhaben. The students have adapted their naturalistic drawings of grasping hands to this unusual format and, through their artistic snapshots of grasping hands, tell stories of adventures in the mountains, of strength, and of climbing techniques.

José Domingo, an employee at the climbing gym: “We’re so excited that people can finally see the photos now that the climbing gym has been closed for four months!”

A big round of applause for the artists Clara Köhler, Diba Sharifzahdeh, Talea Funk, Niklas Diedrich, Amy Wong, and Ines Vielhaben!

Artworks for Motivation

Art, Music & Theater, News

Kulturmühle, an online platform for artistic and cultural contributions from the school community, continues to enjoy great popularity today, following its Advent calendar activities at the end of last year. Most recently, art students in the qualification phase shared their wishes and tips here through thought-provoking paintings and collages with all students—half of whom are still in remote learning at home even after February 22.
The works were created with the hope that, rather than just saying “Hang in there,” they would provide something more concrete—such as motivation for everyday life. Messages such as “Lie down outside on the ground at night and look at the stars…” or “In Marburg, we stick together…” or “It’s just a difficult time, not a difficult life” are meant to provide inspiration and show some students that no one is alone.
Art teacher Ines Vielhaben: “Cultural activity is so important in times of crisis so that we don’t lose ourselves.”
The sample images shown are by Talea Funk and Lucia Wormsbächer.

Exhibition at the Steinmühle: People, Diversity, Future – Show Your Face! Raise Your Voice!

Art, Music & Theater, News

“The exhibition PEOPLE, DIVERSITY, FUTURE – SHOW YOUR FACE! RAISE YOUR VOICE!” was created as a tool for educational and public outreach so that the cultural diversity of the people in the university town of Marburg and the Marburg-Biedenkopf district becomes visible as a statement and a symbol against xenophobia and racism,” explains Thomas Gebauer in an interview. Visitors can get a glimpse into his work in the atrium of the Steinmühle.

People think and feel differently, have different values and norms, and do not share a uniform conception of happiness. And yet all people deserve the same respect, regardless of their background, religion, or skin color. Thirty-five of the 120 exhibits in the “People, Diversity, Future” exhibition are currently on display in the atrium of the Steinmühle. The answers to the question, “What is my greatest happiness?” are just as diverse.

With this work, Thomas Gebauer aims to encourage reflection on the pursuit of happiness as a collective need and the sociocultural foundation of human civilization. In the future as well, activities accompanying the exhibition and writing projects, for example, are intended to deepen and broaden the understanding “that we are one indivisible human family, in which all people, without exception, share human rights and bear joint responsibility for all life and for the future of the Earth,” according to his statement.

A dynamic impetus for reflection

Thomas Gebauer thus provides a dynamic impetus for reflection on human happiness. Happiness, a concept that often devolves into a cliché when put into words, can indeed be described precisely and individually—but this takes time. “During the two years of preparation for this exhibition, I waited a very long time and with great patience for some of the answers, and in doing so I learned that human happiness seems to be something that is found rather than sought, and that while it varies greatly depending on people’s life situations, it always revolves around a core understanding of happiness.” “Everything takes time” also applied to the numerous appointments Gebauer had to organize over the two-year production period in order to photograph the approximately 140 women, men, teenagers, and children. A photographic presentation of the exhibition even includes 140 exhibits.

“In a specially produced exhibition newsletter, I published not only photos of the people and their thoughts on happiness but also a logo designed specifically for the “People, Diversity, Future” exhibition, in which the sun (light/insight), a sail (moon/tool), and a ship (Earth/human family) are integrated in multicolored form into the words PEOPLE DIVERSITY FUTURE,” explains Gebauer.

Everyone defines happiness differently

For me, happiness is “…being healthy…” “…my family being well…” “…being able to drink an Äppler in my Weidenhausen…”. – Some answers come up more often, while others are unique. Responses to the question of personal happiness often revolve around peace or spending time with loved ones. But there are other responses as well: “I’m happiest when I’m not thinking about whether I’m happy.” Or even “…I’m happy when all the plastic disappears from the oceans.”

People, Diversity, Future – “Show Your Face! Raise Your Voice!” is a very ambitious exhibition project. In October 2017, the association “Vielfalt Marburg e.V.” was able to secure Thomas Gebauer to bring the project to life, and Gebauer ultimately completed and unveiled it in October 2019. The theme fits well into current debates, explains chairwoman Nadine Bernshausen. It is the mission of the association “Vielfalt Marburg e.V.” to further promote a general spirit of internationalism and mutual understanding among people, so that a vibrant utopia can continue to be fostered: Being different should not only be accepted, but can also be perceived as exciting and enriching.

A Tool Against Racism

According to Gebauer, dialogue and shifts in perspective—as cultural tools—along with mutual recognition and understanding among people, are important goals of communication. He himself experienced the exhibition’s development phase as a kind of journey of discovery into the values and ideas that are “essential and truly important” to all people on Earth. Gebauer plans to show the “Human Diversity, Future” exhibition for an initial period of five years as a tool against racism and xenophobia in general, and hopes, “… that, in light of the fascinating diversity of our human family, the fear of what initially seems foreign to us in other people can be overcome in favor of greater openness and curiosity toward people both near us and those from distant, foreign cultural spheres.”

“Thomas Gebauer did a great job with that,” commented Ines Vielhaben, an art teacher at Steinmühle. “There is a great deal of support for this topic at Steinmühle.” She set up the exhibition with the 10th-grade class and the advanced art course and explored the messages it conveyed. The 11th-grade class, led by teacher Stephan Kersten, discussed the topic of “happiness” in their ethics class—it was a perfect fit!

María Rámos, who represents the International Affairs department at Steinmühle, also believes the exhibition fits into the school’s philosophy: “It did a good job of capturing different personalities.” Both teachers agree: “This initiative is an asset to Steinmühle. It inspires people to reflect and reminds them of important values.”

Advanced Art Class at the Art Association: A former student is also exhibiting there

Archive, Art, Music & Theater, News

With great curiosity and a desire to engage with the art, the students in Ines Vielhaben’s advanced art class explored the diverse exhibits at the Kunstverein. The Kunstverein is currently showcasing works by 21 artists from Marburg, including Francesco Scheffczyk. The former Steinmühle student is presenting a series of 10 analog black-and-white photographs and a website through which he explores youth subculture. The Kunstverein’s galleries also feature sculpture, installation art, painting, and graphic art.

The spacious art association rooms offer plenty of room in front of the exhibits for visitors to engage in a hands-on dialogue with their favorite pieces in the exhibition using chalk, colored pencils, and large-format paper. During their brief visit, the young artists produced impressive results, which they were able to present during a short guided tour.

The JazzEnsemble and the StoneMill House Band presented their new program in Wolfshausen

Art, Music & Theater, News, Steinmühle on the Road

Three and a half days to work together to bring to life the music we want to play—for many years now, this has been the foundation of both ensembles’ annual programs, which are then premiered at Bands on Stage: Songs ranging from John Lennon to ’50s rhythm ’n’ blues, ’80s movie pop, jazz-funk, and Real Book standards in 2020. Both ensembles have grown significantly this year thanks to younger musicians—in particular, female vocalists, flutists, a violinist, and a young euphonium player. The more experienced older members are still there as well, ensuring that both the band and the jazz ensemble maintain their vibrant outlook for years to come: How it’s done is passed on playfully, directly from musician to musician, through collaboration among students in grades 6 through 12. What is explained can be experienced immediately through mutual listening and playing. Ideas for just about everything come from the group. And the wonderful retreat on the edge of the Wolfshausen forest is a fantastic and welcoming place for this—once again this year: “Imagine… it’s easy if you try.”

She designed the KUSS Oscar: Kiara Cordes was the most creative

Art, Music & Theater, News

In search of its own “Oscar” for the Hessian Children’s and Youth Theater Week (KUSS Festival), partner schools of the Hessian State Theater were asked to submit design ideas. The idea submitted by Steinmühlen student Kiara Cordes (Class 12e) was the most compelling: an artist modeled from clay on his way to the stage. The trophy was created during special sessions over the holidays with the support of teacher Ines Vielhaben and will now be recreated each year and presented to the new KUSS winner. Open Stage 2020: Talented performers make for a wonderful and varied evening

Art, Music & Theater, News

Every year, the event called “Open Stage” demonstrates that Steinmühle is not only a successful school but also a breeding ground for talent. Here, students from all grade levels take the opportunity to showcase their cultural contributions—guided and supported by the music department and other teachers.

At the end of February, nearly 150 audience members gathered at the Forum to enjoy another entertaining evening. Naturally, the youngest high school students kicked things off. The 5th-grade language workshop, led by Kristina Sokoli, enchanted the audience with their well-rehearsed performance of “Step-Breath-Broomstroke” from Michael Ende’s *Momo*. The performers were Jana Farsch, Paul Fischer, Simon Glowacz, Annan Harnisch, Maximilian Schreyer, Summer Schulz, and Ida Sommer.

This performance was followed by Carlotta Meyer (6th grade) and Johanna Krausch (7th grade) on viola and violin. They successfully tackled pieces by Telemann and Aleksey Igudesmann. Social commentary was a must, and it was provided by Paul Fischer (Grade 5) with his anti-Lidl poem. A group of six students from the 5th-grade theater club, led by Melisande Lauginiger, also presented “Lammkeule,” a performance that made the audience smile and reflect. The cast included Sabine Auer, Emilia Berger, Philipp Dubinker, Ida Kraft, Karlson Obermeyer, and Louisa Röder.

The “4 Notenschlüssel,” featuring eighth-grader Nela Haeberle and her three fellow musicians, performed a high-level flute recital. The audience had never heard anything like it!

Felix Müller was a real surprise of the evening. Accompanied by Ulrike Wilmsmeyer on the piano, the tenth-grader—despite having a cold—performed Giuseppe Giordani’s song “Caro mio ben” in such a way that it gave the audience that famous “goosebumps” feeling. A graduate of a classical vocal training program, he regularly competes in various singing competitions.

The evening, hosted by Ulrike Wilmsmeyer, drew to a close with spirited song performances by Talea Funk (11th grade) and Evelyn Damer (12th grade), followed by a performance by Fynn Konnertz. The guitarist skillfully “played right through” a broken string—in the literal sense—before Tom Herfert on tenor saxophone and Frank Wemme on keyboard brought the successful evening to a close. Tom Herfert, too, once began where many lower-grade students first encounter the instrument: in the wind ensemble class. Matthäus Otte from Sound & Light was responsible for ensuring that the deserving participants remained in the spotlight throughout the evening.

Escapes from reality into art, music, literature, or physical relaxation: The Advanced Art Class designed escape pods

Art, Music & Theater, News, Sports & Health

Students in the advanced art class concluded their exploration of architecture and design by developing artistic ideas for the public space at the Steinmühle. They were tasked with creating a design and model for an escape capsule, or “escape vehicle.” The capsule’s interior was intended to provide a space to escape the daily routine at Steinmühle and immerse oneself in another world.

A Dream World Made of Books by Natalia Bieker

This escape pod isn’t just filled with books and stories—the floor is made of text, and even the shell, roof, and walls are modeled after the appearance of an old, open book. The space invites visitors to make themselves comfortable in the realm of words.

“Creative Escape Vehicle” by Lea Zessin

The exterior of this art capsule resembles a White Cube that has lost its sharp corners. Daylight floods the studio from the roof and the north side. Inside, canvases, an easel, and paints are ready to give shape to his inner visions.

Sound Space by Jieni Zhang

This space, which resembles a speaker cabinet even from the outside, is entirely dedicated to sound. Inside the darkened room, visitors can relax and lose themselves in the music, escaping the sounds of everyday school life. The millwheel at the entrance to the cabinet echoes the stone mill logo.

Meditation Room – Room of Silence by Jieni Zhang

In this stone-like, circular room, small lights in the vaulted ceiling remind visitors of a starry sky. They can settle down on the soft floor and meditate.

A Wellness Oasis by Selin Canim

This room contains nothing but a large waterbed with massage jets. Depending on the visitor’s level of tension, this wellness bed offers everything from a gentle, sleep-inducing bubbling sensation to a invigorating back massage.
