In-School Teacher Professional Development 2024: Toward a New School Day Model

Digitalization & AI, News

At the 2017 conference on the future of Steinmühle 2025, one central message stood out: 25 hours are enough! What this meant was that the curriculum requirements should easily be able to be covered within 25 class hours in a way that puts the focus on student learning, and that offering students more choices would be a valuable way to strengthen their motivation for independent learning. Furthermore, students could be encouraged to identify their own areas of focus when engaging with—or rather, their own lives within—the shared world. According to Deci and Ryan’s self-determination theory from the 1990s, self-determination and self-efficacy—along with strong social integration—are still considered central aspects of successful learning today.

Despite interruptions during the COVID-19 years, Steinmühle has continued to pursue this focus over the years through a school development group comprising teachers and parents, right up to the present day. On November 25–26, as part of the school’s internal teacher training program (SchiLF), the goal was to address the following next steps with regard to the previously outlined draft of an improvement-oriented school schedule model: We considered,

1. Which projects should be retained in a project-based course with a slightly reduced time allocation, and

2. what attractive offerings could be included in a new elective track; numerous suggestions from the boarding school clubs were incorporated into this plan. The main focus was on

3. to further develop what we have known so far as a degree program into an even more coherent form of independent, personalized learning (PeLe)—on the second day, in-depth discussions followed on what successful coaching, as an essential supporting component, might look like. Finally, another group

4. Considered ideas for a compelling concept for the new subject of digital learning.

About the Many Possibilities of AI Tools

The days were filled with open dialogue and fruitful discussions, yielding many valuable insights that will now be further explored in smaller working groups before the school development group resumes work on refining the model. The event kicked off with a very inspiring presentation by our colleague Björn Wagner, who vividly illustrated the diverse possibilities of AI tools—such as tutors that teachers can design themselves—as important support systems for more personalized learning.

Evaluate Mobile Phone Practice

Digital technology was also the focus of a workshop on the second day of SchiLF. The topic was students’ use of smartphones and iPads. Drawing on his own observations, the findings of scientific studies, medical and developmental psychological advice, and how other countries address the issue, Daniel Deidl requested that the current regulations governing cell phone use at Steinmühle be evaluated.

The direct support from a large portion of the faculty, as well as from parent representatives present at the last faculty meeting, provided Daniel Deidl and his colleague Kristina Sokoli—who is also working on this issue—with encouraging feedback. Currently, a group of about 10 colleagues is working on more concrete proposals for a corresponding agenda item for the next faculty meeting.

Overall, these days were filled with encounters and fruitful discussions. They provided the Steinmühle faculty with a wealth of useful insights for their future work. More on that soon.

Anfissa Kaschte (8b) wishes you a Merry Christmas!

Art, Music & Theater, Events & Celebrations, News

We’ve all seen this scene somewhere before, haven’t we? The painting by eighth-grader Anfissa Sophia Kaschte depicts the wintery schoolyard at Steinmühle; the section of the building on the right, with its striking colors, provides definitive confirmation. “At some point, I’d seen a Christmas tree standing there, so I just placed some people next to it who could represent Steinmühle,” recalls the young artist. The painting, a combination of watercolor and colored pencil based on a pencil sketch, was completed in three hours during a class with art teacher Dr. Sabine Kraft. It received its final touches at Anfissa’s home: a little more acrylic paint… and the Steinmühle scene was adorned with snowflakes.

“At the beginning of fifth grade, I really intended to become an artist,” Anfissa recalls of how her love for painting began. As she grew older, that vision faded. Not because the many sketchbooks on the shelf at home no longer appealed to her, but because of the realization that she probably wouldn’t be able to make a living from it in the long run. Now, the eighth-grader says, her career goal is criminal law—and thus the legal profession—while “true crime” podcasts serve as a way to prepare. She listens to them alternately with music, out of interest and “for distraction.” And what does Anfissa do while listening? Paint, of course!

This year’s Steinmühle Winter Concert turned into a gathering of the very best: With great virtuosity, intense focus, and boundless energy, students from elementary through high school entertained the guests, who filled every seat in the Forum. Parents, grandparents, and siblings had come to enjoy the Christmas atmosphere in the decorated hall and to listen to high-quality musical performances—the result of long hours of practice, diverse talents, and the dedicated guidance of the music teachers.

Strengths in all areas

Hosted and directed by Ulrike Wilmsmeyer, the audience enjoyed an evening that showcased the Steinmühle’s strengths in every area—thanks to the collaboration between subject teachers, talented students, and excellent organization, including technical and logistical support. We would like to thank everyone who played an active role in making this event possible, not to mention the 13th-grade class, who provided refreshments during the intermission through their catering efforts—thereby ensuring everyone was well-fed while also raising funds for their graduation fund.

Baking Cookies Together for the Food Bank

Collaborations & Partnerships, News, Social Engagement

A Delicious Community Service Project as Part of 10th Grade Project-Based Learning: Together with the students from Class 5b, they baked cookies. In addition to the obvious fun everyone had, the project also served a good cause, as the Christmas cookies were donated to the food bank. As subject teacher Jonathan Gröb reported, the students had raised the money for the ingredients at the fall festival. The idea for the project came from Jakob Lepetit, Jakob Busch, and Linus Zimmer.

Studying abroad isn’t just a short Erasmus semester: Alumni share tips

Former Students & Alumni, Languages & International Affairs, News, Steinmühle on the Road

Instead of spending time speculating about studying abroad, ask those who’ve already done it: This unique opportunity recently presented itself to the soon-to-be high school graduates at Steinmühle. In an online seminar, former Steinmühle students Leo Mengel, Marco Cokic, and Philipp Kreiter supported the current graduating class, allowing the students to benefit from their own experiences in life after high school.

A Reunion After the Podcast from Festival Week

The trio had already visited the Steinmühle in June during the festival week with their podcast “Des Pudels Kern” to record a live segment as part of a larger panel discussion. The topic: “What Schools Today Must Learn to Foster Tomorrow’s Innovation” (episode here: https://steinmuehle.de/blog/2024/07/15/zurueck-an-der-steinmuehle-mit-dem-podcast-des-pudels-kern/). The three young men feel such a strong connection to the Steinmühle and their former teachers that they launched another initiative. They used online platforms to facilitate a Q&A session and, afterward, made the presentation slides and the recording available. Based on their own firsthand experiences, the focus was primarily on applying to universities in Europe, with an emphasis on the UK.

A request for “a donation that will change our little world”

Ecology and Sustainability, Events & Celebrations, News, Social Engagement

As it does every year around Christmas, the “School Garden” elective course (WU) presents the results of a special project in the teachers’ lounge.

Ratatouille, oregano salt, paper goods, and fabric items from Tanzania—such as table runners and lavender sachets—are on display there for sale—all lovely little items that make great Christmas gifts.

Learning to Keep a Global Perspective

“We live by the principle of sustainability,” explains María Ramos, a teacher at Steinmühlen. “We at the ‘
‘ don’t just learn how to cook or garden—we also learn how to manage resources and maintain a global perspective. We organize ourselves like a company that shares its profits with our partner school, the One World School Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. By selling our homemade products, we support the chicken project, which enables the school cafeteria there to be self-sufficient in eggs and chicken meat.” The fabric for the products also comes from Tanzania.

The student group to the school community: “Feel free to take whatever your heart desires and leave a donation that will change our little world.”

Getting to Know Each Other Is the Focus of the 5th and 6th Grade Christmas Parties

Events & Celebrations, International High School, News
Parents, siblings, and even grandparents—many people attend the Christmas parties for grades 5 and 6 every year. Traditionally, they take place on the same day and at the same time.
This time, the Christmas celebrations took place on December 9. The 5th-grade classes gathered for their celebration in the Steinmühle Forum, including Class 5i from our International High School program. “Our youngest high school students eagerly awaited the first performance by the wind ensemble and choir,” recalls Dirk Lange, a member of the school administration and one of the homeroom teachers. Amid colorful cookies, Christmas treats, and a variety of drinks, the girls, boys, and their parents used the festive event as an opportunity to get to know their classmates and the other parents. The afternoon centered on this spirit of fellowship.

Hands-on activities ranging from origami to face painting

Jennifer Bernhart shared her impressions of this year’s Christmas party with the 6th-grade teachers. The 6th-grade classes gathered at the Learning Center. The event began at 2:00 p.m. with a musical performance by the wind ensemble in the open learning area. Everyone was invited to sing along to the Christmas carols. This was followed by a cozy get-together with tea, punch, and Christmas cookies, featuring several hands-on activities, including origami (led by classes 6a and 6b), face painting (6b), making Christmas cards (6a), and making friendship bracelets (classes 6c and 6i). — All in all, an enjoyable time for everyone who came!

Cross-Generational Engagement: 10th-Grade Girls Lead an Upcycling Club for 4th-Grade Elementary Students

Bilingual Elementary School, Ecology and Sustainability, News

A great example of intergenerational activities on the Steinmühlen campus is the upcycling club run by three 10th-grade girls for 4th-grade elementary school students. Lisa Maria Schreier, Emilia Berger, and Ziya Qu lead the club as part of their project-based learning. “Our goal is to further promote the children’s environmental awareness in a playful and artistic way from a young age. In this club, we teach the girls and boys that not all trash is the same. We want to inspire the children to turn old items into new, useful things or to create something that brightens up their everyday lives,” says Lisa Maria Schreier.

“A New Life” for Materials and Objects

The plan is working out impressively well. The elementary school students are turning old canning jars into beautiful containers for spices and other items. Used clothes that have become too small can be turned into pencil cases—and these are just a few examples of how objects are given a “new life” and materials are often put to new uses.

The club began in the second quarter of the first semester. It is optional and relies on regular participants. Tenth-grade girls and elementary school students meet every Thursday from 2:45 p.m. to 3:25 p.m. in an elementary school classroom. It’s still possible to join later, but only after consulting with the organizers.

Selection of the Best Project

The teachers in charge, Dr. Rainer Nietzke and Heike Rabben-Martin, are standing behind the tenth-grade girls. Since they were unable to supervise the elementary school students, Lorraine Herrmann, the assistant principal of the Steinmühle Bilingual Elementary School, is handling that task. She observed: “I’m not really needed here. The tenth-grade girls work with the children like pros.”

To further boost enthusiasm and motivation for the work, at the end of each club meeting, a vote is held to determine which project was the most successful. When the choice falls on one’s own pencil case or the card index box one created, the joy is, of course, especially great.

“For projects with exceptional appeal”: Steinmühle School & Boarding School received the 2024 MINT Star

Contests & Awards, News, STEM, Talent Development

A grand reception on our campus: Steinmühle welcomed a five-member delegation to accept a very special award in the STEM field. The Association for Electrical, Electronic, and Information Technologies (VDE) and the German Amateur Radio Club (DARC) awarded the Steinmühle School & Boarding School the STEM Star 2024, thereby recognizing “outstanding and sustained commitment to the fields of mathematics, computer science, natural sciences, and technology.”

The interplay between the disciplines was convincing

Individual teachers and teams from schools in Hesse were eligible to apply. “With a STEM Star, we recognize projects and programs that demonstrate exceptional impact, continuity, and ingenuity,” said Dr. Kevin Rick, director of VDE Südwest. The award was presented to STEM coordinator and head of the STEM gifted education program, Dr. Jutta Töhl-Borsdorf, her colleague Antje Seel, and her colleague Dr. Patrick Szabo. “Without qualified guidance that inspires students and spurs them on to peak performance in research and experimentation, such outstanding achievements would not be possible,” commented the laudators, including Thomas Beiderwieden from VDE Rhein-Main and Christian Entsfellner from DARC, in recognition of their work. In the case of Steinmühle’s winning project, “Water Analysis 2.0,” the jury was particularly impressed by the interplay of the disciplines involved in the project—ranging from ecology to programming to model building. The team of students from the Plus-MINT track at the Steinmühle boarding school thus advanced to the national finals of “Jugend forscht” this early summer. This project involves a measurement platform developed and built by the students themselves to determine water quality (we have reported on it several times).

Minister of Culture as Patron

“Steinmühle is delighted to receive this very special award and is proud of everyone who contributed to it through their hard work, perseverance, and dedication,” said Principal Björn Gemmer on behalf of the award recipients, who received certificates and prize money totaling 1,500 euros. For Steinmühle, this serves as an incentive to continue investing energy in this area. Because, as you can see, it’s worth it in every way!

The award ceremony, held under the patronage of Armin Schwarz, Hessian Minister of Culture, was celebrated by the participants with a meal together in the dining room of the Steinmühle. And there, too, there was plenty of praise—for our cuisine.
