Steinmühle Once Again Recognized as a STEM-Friendly School

Contests & Awards, News, STEM

Once again, Steinmühle was recognized as a STEM-friendly school yesterday, Wednesday. Dr. Jutta Töhl-Borsdorf and Dr. Sven Freibert accepted the award in Philippstal, North Hesse, representing Steinmühle as the only participating school from Marburg.

Steinmühle Receives Top Rating

“In the evaluation, the Steinmühle was ranked at the highest level,” said Dr. Jutta-Töhl-Borsdorf happily.

According to the two teachers, in the morning, participants were able to visit the training center of the host company, K+S Minerals and Agriculture GmbH Philippsthal, and gain interesting insights, for example, into dual degree programs.

The schools were honored by Sabine Stuhlmann (MNU Hesse Regional Association and the NaWi LoLa project), Benjamin Gesing (Executive Director of MINT Zukunft e.V.), and Harald Fisch (Senior Advisor at MINT Zukunft e.V.). The awards are valid for three years.

Recognized and supported by the business community

Mathematics, computer science, natural sciences, and technology (MINT) have become increasingly important for school development. The award-winning “STEM-friendly schools” demonstrate that their educational approach enables them to integrate ad hoc measures—such as those related to digitalization—into everyday school life in a didactically and pedagogically sound manner. The “STEM-friendly schools” gain visibility among students, parents, businesses, and the general public through this recognition and are not only acknowledged but also receive special support from the business community. Nationwide partners of the national initiative “MINT Zukunft schaffen!” (Creating a Future with STEM!) honor those schools that consciously prioritize STEM. The schools are evaluated based on a rigorous, standardized set of criteria and undergo a nationally uniform application process.

The group photo, taken by Uwe Handke on behalf of the organizer, shows Dr. Jutta Töhl-Borsdorf and Dr. Sven Freibert holding their award certificates during the ceremony.

The InnoClubs at Steinmühle Boarding School are up and running!

Life at Boarding School, News

Whether it’s event planning, the boarding school council, decorations and design, or creating content for social media —the students at Steinmühle Boarding School are now actively shaping these and other areas: Last Saturday, the “InnoClubs” kicked off! In the run-up to the event, the students were able to choose from a total of eight groups and join the one that interested them the most.

Under the guidance of the boarding school teachers on Head of Boarding School Anke Muszynski’s team, the first order of business was brainstorming: Who has what ideas? How will we go about planning? What are the next steps?

First Aid, Culture, and a New Café at the Tennis Courts

Those who chose “Peer Connect” will focus in the future on topics such as sustainable projects, learning at the boarding school, and first aid. The Culture Club is dedicated to cultural activities and also aims to build connections with cultural offerings in Marburg. The Welcome Club will explore ways to further refine the welcoming atmosphere at Steinmühle. The “Café Mühle” group is tasked with helping to design the café currently under construction at the tennis courts.

We’ve already received a lot of input from the student body

The teaching staff reported that the students had been very engaged from the very beginning and had already contributed numerous ideas to the mixed-age groups.
Participation in an InnoClub at the Steinmühle boarding school is a required activity, along with joining a recreational club.

Homosexuality in the Third Reich—A Firsthand Account

Collaborations & Partnerships, News, Politics, Business & Responsibility

A colorful rainbow shone over the Cappel neighborhood of Marburg and the Steinmühle on Thursday evening, as if it wanted to extend a special invitation to the Forum for Klaus Dieter Spangenberg’s reading. A native of Marburg and a certified social worker, Spangenberg presented his book there, titled “Wo ist Fritz” (Where Is Fritz?). In it, he recounts the fate of his great-uncle as an example of the victims of military justice and the persecution of homosexuals in the Third Reich.

Visitors of all ages did not get to attend a reading in the strict sense of the word. Instead, they listened to a heartfelt account of the family history, with a focus on the life of Great-Uncle Fritz Spangenberg.

Still Something Special

When author Klaus Dieter Spangenberg, born in 1964, came out himself in 1982–83 and revealed his sexual orientation to his family, he was told, “You’re not the first.” There had already been someone else at Bahnhofstraße 11 in Marburg: his great-uncle Fritz Spangenberg. As a gay man during the Third Reich, he had experienced the particular harshness of Paragraph 175 of the Criminal Code—with all its inhumane consequences.

Even though, decades later, more and more rights were won for people in same-sex relationships, and Paragraph 175 of the German Criminal Code (StGB) was later relaxed and finally repealed in 1994—according to the speaker’s account, it always remained something special. In his own family home, the unspoken rule was not to talk about it; after all, the family was well-known and ran an established café in Marburg—and, according to his family, there was no room for gossip. Klaus Dieter Spangenberg—incidentally, a graduate of Steinmühlen High School—who, as a gay man, saw “no future in a small town,” left Marburg for Berlin. He left the city behind—but thoughts of his great-uncle Fritz stayed with him.

Research through 2022

“Can love really be a sin?” asked Zarah Leander in her song from the album of the same name, which the guest played during his lecture. According to his own account, Spangenberg began researching the fate of his great-uncle several years later—in 2009—and continued his research until 2022. Documents—including criminal records, details about his time in the penal battalion, a photo album belonging to his grandfather, and letters from his great-uncle to his own sister—documented the obstacles, resistance, demotions, and punishments that Fritz Spangenberg, born in 1914, had been forced to endure. The photos showed the pharmacy student and later pharmacist first as an assistant cook, often fooling around—sometimes even in women’s clothing—but also, in 1935, in an SA uniform, which promised certain privileges. That same year, Section 175 of the German Criminal Code (StGB) had been further tightened.

Fritz Spangenberg often appeared in public as part of a trio, with his sister Elfriede and her fiancé Hans Hahn. The three pharmacists went on many outings and had their pictures taken. – For Klaus Dieter Spangenberg, these are documents from a time when his great-uncle seemed, at least on the surface, to be doing well.

Witnessing Enforcement Proceedings

Fritz Spangenberg completed his basic military training in Kassel. At some point, an allegation of attempted seduction of minors—an age group that at the time included anyone under the age of 21—appeared in Fritz Spangenberg’s criminal record. The evidence was scant. Nevertheless, Spangenberg was targeted by the “Department for Combating Homosexuality.”

As a trained paramedic, he was able to avoid being sent to a concentration camp or prison; however, in 1943 he was sent to the Wehrmacht prison in Torgau on the Elbe. Among other things, he was required to witness the execution of death sentences there.
And there’s more. He was demoted as an officer, lost his military rank, had his certification as a medic revoked, and had his license to practice as a pharmacist revoked. Because he conducted himself very well in the Wehrmacht prison, on February 16, 1943—after nine months—he received his discharge certificate, which at least documented his good conduct and behavior toward everyone.
The End: Penal Company on the Eastern Front

Nevertheless, in December of that same year, he had to say goodbye to his family once again to report for duty in the so-called “punishment company” on the Eastern Front. This unit carried out its operations in Russia and Belarus. His family members had always hoped afterward that he would be taken prisoner. Instead, they—and later Klaus Dieter Spangenberg—learned from a commander’s report in the archives that Fritz Spangenberg and his Unit 299 had gone missing during a night raid in a swampy and forested area.

Fritz Spangenberg’s remains were never found; he was declared dead in 1969. There is no memorial site. His name appears only on a memorial plaque honoring the victims of World War I and World War II.

Social ostracism, the loss of his medical license, shame, and ultimately death in a penal battalion on the Eastern Front make up the sad and moving story of Fritz. The book is an attempt to reconstruct his tragic fate based on documents from the Wehrmacht files and the family archives. Fritz is one of over 50,000 victims of the Nazi justice system and one of approximately 7,000 individuals convicted within the Wehrmacht.

Klaus Dieter Spangenberg: Where Is Fritz? – Victims of § 175 in the Third Reich. An Example of Military Justice and the Persecution of Homosexuals in the Wehrmacht. The book has 116 pages and was published by Büchner Verlag, Marburg, in 2024, as a paperback or e-book (ISBN: 978-3-96317-349-3).

“My Path of Courage”: Actively Pursuing Your Own Dreams Through Career Guidance

News, Politics, Business & Responsibility

Where does the path lead after graduating from high school? Steinmühle is very committed to helping its students develop as clear a vision as possible—even while they’re still in high school—of what they want to do once they hold their high school diploma in their hands. Career-oriented events are therefore regularly scheduled throughout the school year. A morning seminar with the educational startup “Mein mutiger Weg” has now become a standard part of the program. The trainers offer modern career guidance. Their motto: Working on your own future should be a joy, not a source of fear.

Identify skills

During the seminar last Tuesday, the high school students once again learned how important it is to identify their own abilities, interests, and even dreams, so they can take targeted steps—on their own initiative and with self-confidence—to get a little closer to achieving them. Clarifying one’s ideas, life priorities, and personal strengths serves as an important guide to ideally finding the right college program or vocational training. “Defining the criteria for choosing a future career can help prevent many students from dropping out,” reported the team from the certified educational institution in Karlsruhe.

The morning at the Steinmühle Forum consisted of answering questions, engaging in interactive activities, and working through a seminar workbook.

Dr. Claudia Röder, who is in charge of career guidance and internships at Steinmühle, organized the event and shared some photos from it. Somehow, it seems as though the students actually enjoyed discussing the otherwise serious topic of “the future.”

First Day of School for 5th Graders: An Important Day for Girls, Boys, and Their Families

Events & Celebrations, News

The doors to the Steinmühle Forum were wide open on this beautiful summer day—and that was a good thing, because it allowed all the parents, grandparents, siblings, and relatives of our fifth-graders to watch the entire orientation program. It really is a special day when high school begins at Steinmühle!

14 Languages in the International High School Program

We are starting the 2024/25 school year with four classes in Grade 5. In addition to 5a, 5b, and 5c, Class 5i is the lowest grade level in our International High School Program. And indeed, there were quite a few familiar faces in this class—students who, after attending the Steinmühle Bilingual Elementary School, are continuing their educational journey in the International High School Program. The girls and boys attending this program speak 14 different languages at home!

A Glimpse into the World of Music

Today, however, on the first day of school, all 5th-grade students were introduced to a different language: the language of music! The current sixth-graders once again performed excerpts from their anniversary musical—which they had staged in June to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Steinmühle School & Boarding School—and presented their choral singing. The music department—led by Ulrike Wilmsmeyer, Anna Prokop, Frank Wemme, and Daniel Sans—had pulled out all the stops to give the audience a taste of vocal and instrumental performances right from the start. With popular songs from music history, starting with the 1950s, the sixth graders immediately captivated the entire audience. Catchy tunes like “Rock Around the Clock,” “Dancing Queen,” “They Don’t Care About Us,” and “Waka Waka” simultaneously took the audience on a journey back in time to Steinmühle’s past and brought to mind many a school milestone.

Trust, Patience, and Fun

“Have faith, be patient, and have fun together”—this was the advice the teachers gave the students as they left. Principal Björn Gemmer concluded by suggesting that everyone stop by to see Jasmine Weidenbach on their way out. The chairwoman of the Steinmühle Marburg Friends Association had a welcome surprise in store for everyone.

Photos are part of it

The students in the new 5th-grade classes then gathered at the legendary climbing spider in the schoolyard to pose for the photographer—first by class with their parents, and then as a whole class on their own.

The photos below show, in the following order, the classes with their homeroom teachers: Stephan Steinebach (5i), Dirk Lange (5c), Jonathan Gröb (5b), and Rieke Schüssler (5a). The other photos provide a glimpse of the first-day-of-school celebration, which was organized primarily by students in the 6th-grade classes.

Welcome to our school: We welcome the “first-graders” at our bilingual elementary school

Bilingual Elementary School, Events & Celebrations, News

“Nice to see you all!” With warm words and plenty of music, we welcomed the new students of our bilingual elementary school—along with their parents, grandparents, and relatives—to our school’s lovingly decorated auditorium. It was a big day for the 17 students from diverse international backgrounds! Over the next four years, Janine Küster, Lori Herrmann, and their team will prepare the boys and girls in two languages—English and German—for their secondary school careers, which will ideally lead them to Steinmühle’s rapidly growing International High School program.

The First Stage Performance

The morning’s program consisted of musical performances featuring both instruments and voices. As is tradition, the “older” children at the Steinmühle Bilingual Elementary School gave their younger classmates a warm welcome with songs and poems, and the excitement spread quickly. During Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s “Eine kleine Nachtmusik,” the audience—which included Principal Björn Gemmer—actively joined in, clapping, patting their hands, and stomping their feet. It was still a bit nerve-wracking for the youngest children on our campus, however, as they were called up to the stage one by one. But their homeroom teachers, Hannah Achenbach and Tobias Leisge, were already there waiting to welcome them. By the time the audience broke into a huge round of applause, the ice had completely melted.

Photos as a keepsake

To commemorate that morning—which will remain a very special day in the lives of each and every student—numerous photos were taken of the “first graders” themselves, their entire class, and their classmates’ performances on stage. Jasmine Weidenbach, the chairperson of the Steinmühle Support Association, even gave each and every one of them a personal gift.

We hope you all have a great time at the Steinmühle!

“It’s as if I never left”: Life Returns to Steinmühle Boarding School

Life at Boarding School, News

After taking care of the final formalities with our administrative team—our new boarding students were already off with our teachers to their living groups and settling into their rooms! We’re thrilled to have welcomed so many new faces to our Steinmühle boarding school yesterday and could hardly wait for all our returning boarding students to arrive shortly afterward. — After six weeks of summer break, our campus is bustling with life again!

A seamless transition from home

While the children and teenagers were getting accustomed to their—in some cases—new “second home” or had returned to their usual place of residence and school, the parents made themselves comfortable with coffee, cake, fruit, and soft drinks, chatted with boarding school director Anke Muszynski and school principal Björn Gemmer, and were delighted to see how smoothly the transition from home to the Steinmühle Marburg boarding school had gone for the new 2024–25 school year. “It feels like I never even left,” said a high school boarding student happily upon his arrival.

Delighted with a Great Start

Our photos show (from left) our licensed nurse, Mandy Mönke, with our boarding school administration team—consisting of Sandra Werner, Ina Block, and Maike Friauf, the boarding school’s accountant and executive assistant—along with boarding school director Anke Muszynski.

The fact that the weather cooperated on Welcome Day is evident in the photo showing our seating areas with sun umbrellas, where the parents of our new boarding students took their seats.

You could tell they were thrilled about the great start, as this snapshot taken at a parents’ table shows.

Goodbye to Grades: Physical Education Sets New Standards

News, Sports & Health

Goodbye, numerical grades! At Steinmühle, physical education classes for grades 5 through 8 will soon feature quality certificates instead of grades. This innovative change was recently approved unanimously at the last faculty meeting and marks an important step toward a more modern and multi-perspective approach to physical education at our school, reports Benedikt Hohmann on behalf of the physical education department.

The quality certificates will be introduced gradually starting next school year. Fifth-grade classes will thus be the first to experience this new form of performance assessment in physical education. Steinmühle is working closely with other schools that have already taken this step.

“We are convinced that this innovation will have a positive impact on physical education, the sports culture at Steinmühle, and the motivation of our students,” said Benedikt Hohmann. “We are looking forward to the new opportunities and are eager to see what we will learn from the quality certifications.”

Liam Bacht – a young archer on the path to success

Contests & Awards, News, Sports & Health

During the 2023–24 school year, Liam Bacht was in fifth grade at Steinmühle. But even now, this young student has a hobby that has made him well-known far beyond the school grounds: archery. He took up the sport in the summer of 2022, and he has been passionate about it ever since. With the support of his parents, Liam trains regularly at his archery club’s grounds and shows tremendous dedication.

Seventh Place at the “Vegas Shoot”

This dedication is paying off, as Liam is already competing in numerous tournaments. In an interview, he explained that the tournaments are held at various levels—from district and state competitions to Germany-wide and Europe-wide tournaments, as well as world championships. He is particularly proud of his victory at the Hesse state level, where he won the gold medal by an impressive margin of 30 rings.

But Liam doesn’t just think locally—he’s taking his bow and arrow out into the world. A highlight of his career so far was competing in an international tournament in the U.S. He traveled to the U.S. with his parents, where he faced off against about 80 of the world’s best archers and ultimately achieved an outstanding seventh-place finish—a success that Liam and his family are rightly proud of.

The venue where Liam competed in an archery tournament in the U.S. is the South Point Hotel, Casino & Spa in Las Vegas, Nevada. That’s where the “Vegas Shoot” takes place every year—one of the largest and most prestigious indoor archery events in the world. The competition attracts participants from all over the world, including many talented archers like Liam. The venue is located in the southwest part of Las Vegas and offers an impressive space for the competitions and accompanying activities.

There, he also met the German national team, which made him pretty excited. Meeting the top athletes and experiencing the international atmosphere were a special experience for Liam. Despite his nerves, he demonstrated his skills and ultimately finished in an outstanding seventh place. This already ranks him among the world’s best young archers.

A young athlete with big goals

“Getting to travel to the desert for the competition was a dream come true. It motivated me even more,” Liam says, looking back on his participation in the “Vegas Shoot.” His enthusiasm for archery is palpable—and he knows exactly what makes this sport special. “In archery, it’s important to stay calm. You can learn how to concentrate,” Liam says with conviction.

At just 11 years old, he already has clear goals in mind. He’s especially looking forward to his 13th birthday, because once he turns 13, he’ll finally be able to compete in the German Championships. However, he’ll have to wait a little longer to compete in the European Championships or play in the Bundesliga—those competitions are open only to athletes 18 and older.

“I want to become a pro”

Despite his impressive achievements, Liam has remained just another ordinary student in his class. His classmates are happy for him and regularly congratulate him whenever he wins another tournament. “For them, my success has almost become the norm,” Liam says with a smile. With his long blond hair and determined demeanor, he’s a standout not only on the tournament court but also at school.

One of Liam’s favorite subjects is German, taught by his teacher Frank Wemme. It was Frank who encouraged Liam to tell the school community about his fascinating hobby. When asked about his plans, Liam says quite clearly, “I want to become a professional.” He knows that the German Armed Forces or the police offer exciting career prospects for elite athletes. If his passion for archery continues, this very path could one day become a reality.

At the moment, Liam Bacht seems to be consistently pursuing his goals. The student trains at least twice a week with his coaching team, consisting of Michael and Judith Icking. With this discipline and support, the odds are good that Liam will achieve his goals. His story impressively demonstrates just how far enthusiasm, perseverance, and strong support can take you. We can’t wait to see what new chapters he’ll write in his athletic career in the future.
