Adventure Student Exchange: Half a Year in Canada

Languages & International Affairs, News

Amelie Laukel (9a) Receives a Scholarship for Her Stay

It worked out great: Amelie Laukel, a student at Steinmühle School, beat out 240 other applicants in the competition for a scholarship to study abroad in Canada. This marks the fulfillment of a big dream for the 14-year-old.

The student exchange program begins at the end of August. It is made possible by Partnership International e.V. The Cologne-based organization is supporting the student with one of the coveted anniversary scholarships that Partnership International awarded to mark the organization’s 60th anniversary.

Amelie is really looking forward to her time in Canada: “What appeals to me about Canada, aside from its impressive and, in some places, still untouched nature, is the openness and tolerance of Canadians. They’re also known for being incredibly friendly and multicultural. I think it will be easy for me to make connections and find friends there.”

To ensure that Amelie is well-prepared for her adventure, she and other exchange students underwent extensive preparation during a seminar lasting several days. The organization Partnership International e.V. places great importance on personal contact and thorough preparation for the students, as both are crucial to a successful student exchange.

The association (www.partnership.de) has set itself the goal of enabling as many students as possible to participate in an intercultural exchange. To that end, it awards partial scholarships to its program participants each school year. Students can currently apply for scholarships for exchanges beginning in the summer of 2023. In addition to Canada, the United States, Ireland, and England are also available as exchange destinations.

Vive la langue française! Successful participation in the DELF exams

Contests & Awards, Languages & International Affairs, News

Despite pandemic-related restrictions, exams were held again in 2021, allowing students to earn the French DELF certificate. Due to the restrictions, the number of participants was lower than usual, but two brave Francophile students still took the B1 exams, prepared for them on their own, and traveled to Giessen for the oral exam: Etienne Harder (left) and Jan Audretsch. It’s all the more wonderful that both achieved excellent results! French teacher Jeannine Walter (right)—who is also the head of languages and the arts at Steinmühle—and the entire school community extend their congratulations.

Despite Adverse Conditions: Performance on Cambridge Exams Exceeded Expectations

Contests & Awards, Languages & International Affairs, News

This was the second time the Cambridge exam was held under COVID-19 restrictions. This year, preparation was even more heavily influenced by the lockdown and, consequently, online instruction. Despite these challenging conditions, 34 students decided to take the exam, leading to the formation of two classes led by Nicole Hohm and Matthäus Otte.

This was the first time we offered two BEC Cambridge courses. BEC stands for Business English Certificate. The Cambridge Business English Certificate series comprises a total of three certificates, and here at Steinmühle we offer the middle level—
: BEC Vantage, language level B2. With this certificate, students can demonstrate to potential employers that they are capable of working in English in an international environment. The certificate can help them when applying for internships, as well as later on when looking for a job or seeking promotions.

High degree of self-organization

While preparing for the exam, the students demonstrated a very high degree of self-organization and motivation. They voluntarily participated in online classes and also independently used digital practice rooms for language exercises. When in-person classes were finally able to resume, they worked very efficiently and with great focus in the classroom—with plenty of fresh air and the windows kept open at all times…
At the end of May, the big day arrived. After the mandatory COVID-19 tests, the exam began at 8:30 a.m.: the Reading, Writing, and Listening sections were administered until approximately 12:45 p.m., and starting at 1:15 p.m., the oral exams followed, taking place every 20 minutes in two exam rooms until 5:45 p.m.—which meant a truly nerve-wracking wait for the last exam pairs.
But the hard work paid off! The students achieved very good results—two candidates were even certified at the next higher language level, C1.

We congratulate all participants on receiving their certificates! Our photo shows the entire group together with their teachers and their certificates, which always arrive at different times.

English: Second Prize in the Nationwide Helbling Challenge

Contests & Awards, Languages & International Affairs, News

Participating in the Read & Listen Challenge organized by Helbling Publishing was a huge success for Class 6b at Steinmühle. For taking second place in the competition among all sixth-grade classes nationwide, Jael Bieber received a certificate (photo) and a check for 100 euros on behalf of all her classmates in Class 6b. The money will go toward the class fund.

Nearly all of Steinmühlen’s 6th-grade classes participated in the challenge, reported English teachers Theresa Großer and Stephan Steinebach, who observed a high level of enthusiasm among all participants. The assignment involved reading a book online as part of their homeschooling for two weeks and answering quiz questions about it. The students exchanged ideas via video conferences, discussing their answers to the questions. For the 6th-grade class, the assigned reading was “The Captain’s Castle” by Gavin Biggs, published by Helbling Verlag.

There were 12 chapters to read online. Each chapter included a short audio clip that provided clues about the villain in the exciting story—whom the children had to identify. The main task at the end of the story was to determine who the thief was and who was trying to steal the treasure in the castle. The children also had to figure out exactly where in the castle this treasure was hidden. The contest was conducted entirely through the interactive learning platform HELBLING e-zone.

Teachers Theresa Großer and Stephan Steinebach were delighted that the varied set of tasks was so well received by the students: “The children participated with great enthusiasm and high motivation.” In total, over 7,000 students from all over Germany took part in this exciting competition. The competition was held separately for grades 6, 7, and 8, each with a different set of tasks. Steinmühle is the only school in the Marburg-Biedenkopf district to have placed in the top 10 in one of these categories.

Steinmühle’s First Italian Course Says “Arrivederci”

Languages & International Affairs, News

It was the perfect setting: bright sunshine and blue skies provided the ideal conditions for the first Italian class in Steinmühle’s history to take a group photo. On March 30, the 13 students from the 13th grade gathered for the last time with their teacher, Jeannine Walter. For the first time, students did not have to travel to another high school in Marburg to attend an Italian course; instead, they enjoyed the lessons right here at Steinmühle. “Whether a course can be offered on-site always depends on enrollment,” explained Jeannine Walter.

The students’ reasons for taking the Italian course varied widely. In two cases, a parent brought a native-language background to the family; other participants felt, “The language is beautiful and interesting.” Still others took the view that “learning languages is cool.” For other course participants, the decision was influenced by the requirements for the Abitur, which stipulate a specific foreign language component. In fact, two of the participants even chose Italian for their oral Abitur exam. Despite the pandemic, the Steinmühlen students are confident that they will soon be able to apply and deepen the knowledge they’ve acquired through real-life interaction with others.

“Unfortunately, for organizational reasons, it is not possible to schedule Italian classes at any other time than during the 7th and 8th periods or later,” explains Jeannine Walter, who also teaches English and French and is the department head for languages. Mar Montenegro is available as a second Italian teacher at Steinmühle.

Incidentally, the group photo taken at the end of the course is remarkable in two ways. Not only was it taken under pandemic-related restrictions, but—because of “Theme Week”—the students’ outfits also catch the eye. The theme for that week was “Gender Swap.”

Cambridge certificates attest to a high level of English proficiency

Contests & Awards, Languages & International Affairs, News

Undeterred by the restrictions imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic, Steinmühlen students have once again achieved outstanding results in English this year and earned the globally recognized Cambridge Certificate. Subject teacher Nicole Hohm and Principal Björn Gemmer praised the graduates highly for this achievement and posed for a group photo with them. Examiner Diane Oliver was also very pleased with the results and attested to the students’ excellent performance at a high linguistic level. The students had already achieved these results during the previous school year, while they were still in 11th grade. The photo session takes place a little later each year, specifically once the certificates are available.

DELF French Certificate at Steinmühle High School

Contests & Awards, Languages & International Affairs, News

Since 2005, Steinmühle has been involved in administering the DELF, a European-recognized language certification that certifies students’ proficiency in reading comprehension, listening comprehension, oral expression, and writing, based on their respective grade levels.
We are delighted that this year, middle and high school students successfully took this exam and that the official diplomas from the French government have finally been awarded:
Etienne Harder, Alexander Seip, and Marlon Morin achieved excellent results at the A2 level, Lea Posingies and Julia Scheibli achieved above-average results at the B1 level, and Janina Seip and Chantal Harder took on the most challenging B2 level and passed with flying colors.
We congratulate all participants.

(Unfortunately, the B1 candidates Lea Posingies and Julia Scheibli are missing from the photo.)

The 2nd Reading Olympics for Class 6a (now Class 7a), held from April through the end of July 2019, was even more successful

Contests & Awards, Languages & International Affairs, News

Since the first Reading Olympics for the current 7a class—with a total of over 139,000 pages read, and since some students in the class asked me if we could hold another Reading Olympics, we organized a second, slightly modified Reading Olympics during the 14 weeks leading up to summer break. To ensure that students who are not yet strong readers also have a chance to be just as successful in the Reading Olympics as the strong readers—for whom reading comes easily anyway—we based this round on the individual weekly page average from the last Reading Olympics, which students were tasked with matching or exceeding. Everyone who met this goal during the week received 100 points, with the aim of reaching 1,500 points by the end of the Olympics. Bonus points were awarded for every additional 100 pages read and for doubling, tripling, or more than one’s average. After all, 16 students managed to consistently read at or above their average. This is extremely encouraging, especially considering that in the 5th grade 16 students reported never or only rarely reading—and especially given that the students had already performed so well in the first Reading Olympics. Many even read significantly more than they did during the first Reading Olympics. In total, the class read 222,447.5 pages over these 14 weeks, nearly doubling their final result. It is particularly gratifying that some students, for whom reading was extremely difficult, managed to read up to 2,300 pages in a single week. These students in particular—who made the transition from non-readers to readers thanks to this Reading Olympics—can therefore be incredibly proud of themselves. First place in the second Reading Olympics went to Lilly Peters this time, with 9,750 points and 32,266 pages read (previously 18,432 pages), followed by Livia Schulze with 9,500 points and 36,972 pages read (previously 27,381 pages). With this, Livia once again set the record for the most pages read. Third place, also just behind the top two finishers, went to Rebecca Zenker with 9,000 points and 33,541 pages read (previously 25,044 pages). Fourth place —and thus the highest finish among the boys —went to Lasse Hühn with 7,400 points and 12,983 pages read (previously 1,730 pages). Lasse Hühn, who had an average of 91 pages read in his first Olympiad, has now reached an average of 927 pages. In addition to the students mentioned above, the following students also managed to break the 5,000-point mark; according to my prediction, I had expected only three students to do so: Hanna Schmidt-Dege with 7,250 points and 25,697 pages read (previously 10,350 pages), Amelie Laukel with 7,200 points and 22,657 pages read (previously 13,679 pages), and Henry Just with 6,450 points and 20,367 pages read (previously 12,252 pages). Marie Agel (6177 pages, up from 1109), Leon Schmidt (7367.5 pages, up from 3668), and Piet Laufhütte (2934 pages, up from 611) all achieved significant increases in their average reading scores . Laufhütte’s average increased from 32 pages in the first Reading Olympiad to 210 pages. Colin O’Brien, Sophia Weidemann, Junia Molzberger, Len Hülsbeck (son of Ms. Lauginiger), Laurenz Steiß, and Lia Kraft can also be very proud of themselves, as they have noticeably improved their averages from the last Olympiad.

Thus, following the creation of a classroom library, the “Reading Caterpillar,” the book presentations, and the first Reading Olympics, the second Reading Olympics can also be considered a great success.

All participants who earned 1,500 points received small gifts in recognition of their great dedication to reading. The eight winners who earned 5,000 points received larger prizes.

Where and How Do You Communicate? A Workshop with a Certificate on the Use of the English Language

Contests & Awards, Languages & International Affairs, News

Twenty-five 13th-grade students at Steinmühle completed a special English workshop with a certificate from the University of Central Florida in Orlando, FL, United States. Under the title “English Communication in Academia and Beyond,” they spent three days exploring aspects of English communication in academic settings and future (professional) life under the experienced guidance of Dr. Steffen Guenzel. The university professor from Florida helped the participants—all of whom already have a good command of English—develop an understanding of academic writing and the difference between simple and professional communication through scholarly analysis, strategies, and exercises. He demonstrated what “good writing” in English looks like and explained how everyday communication, academic communication, and professional writing differ from one another and what sets them apart.

The workshop was a collaborative project between Martin Luther School (MLS) and Steinmühle. The presenter had previously held a workshop with the same content at MLS. Participation was limited to 25 students, and the costs were shared by MLS and Steinmühle. At both schools, the students each pay an equal share of the cost. Our photo shows the Steinmühle workshop participants together with Principal Björn Gemmer and Professor Guenzel, who provided helpful guidance to the interested students.

Even Better Than Expected: Proud of Our Cambridge Certificates

Contests & Awards, Languages & International Affairs, News

As 11th graders, they had earned this achievement; now that their certificates had arrived, they posed for the photographer as 12th graders: Once again this year, a large group of students at Steinmühle earned the globally recognized Cambridge Certificate, which attests to a high level of knowledge and proficiency in the English language.

What’s remarkable is that as many as seven of the participants actually exceeded the goal. The aim was to be certified at the B2 language level. However, these seven students were actually certified at the C1 level—the proficiency level of educated native speakers! “That’s extraordinary for eleventh graders,” says Principal Björn Gemmer, pictured here with subject teacher Nicole Hohm (left). Unfortunately, Moses Walther was unable to attend the photo session. Gemmer: “He had the best result—very close to ‘perfect.’”
