Reading Contest: Nela Haeberle Among Hesse’s Top Two

Archive, News

Last Thursday at 2 p.m., Hesse’s top eight readers gathered in the heart of Frankfurt, in the Europaviertel near Sparda Bank, for the state finals of the nationwide reading competition. Nela Haeberle (center) from Gymnasium Steinmühle unfortunately just missed qualifying for the national finals in Berlin in a very close competition, but she returned to Marburg with fond memories of an exciting contest and satisfied with her own performance, having tied for second place—a ranking shared by seven participants. Congratulations on this great success!

Dustin Brömer Is Getting a Taste for Medals

Archive, News

The Cologne Junior Regatta was a huge success for RuS junior rower Dustin Brömer, thanks to fantastic weather conditions. He won the heat in the lightweight Junior B single sculls, claiming his first gold medal of the competition. Due to the large field of entrants, this success was not enough to qualify him for the A final the following day. Since the participants were ultimately seeded based on their times, Dustin worked his way up from the back of the field and competed in the last final in the heavyweight B single sculls.

Here, he showed what he was still capable of. This race earned him his second gold medal of the weekend. “In between,” the RuS athlete had stepped in to help out. When it became clear that one athlete had dropped out, he filled in for the Junior B quadruple sculls, forming a racing team with rowers from the Marburg Rowing Club and the Frankfurt Rowing Society. “It wasn’t his weight class, but they were short-handed,” says Joshua Benkow from the coaching staff.

“Dustin drove a spectacular race,” said coach Martin Strohmenger, who is otherwise known for his restraint when it comes to using superlatives. “He did a really great job and, mentally strong right to the end, made the most of his technical advantages.” “Stromi” also heaped praise on Joshua Benkow for his first-rate coaching performance. He guided a great group of enthusiastic rowers from RuS Steinmühle and Marburger Ruderverein through the competition as a cohesive team with a positive overall atmosphere. Strohmenger: “I’m proud of everyone.”

Kangaroo and Pangea Competitions: Honors for Young Math Champions

Archive, News

On Kangaroo Day, the third Thursday in March, more than 6 million children and teenagers from over 70 countries around the world took part in the Kangaroo Math Competition, including more than 910,000 in Germany. At Steinmühle, 73 students took part in this voluntary test, mainly from grades 5, 6, and 7. The Kangaroo problems can usually be solved using a variety of different approaches, and ultimately, students just have to choose the correct answer from five options. This suits the students very well. All participants received a certificate, a small game, and the Kangaroo booklet containing all the problems and solutions.

In each grade level, first, second, and third prizes are awarded to the top 5 percent of participants nationwide; these prizes include science kits, strategy games, math puzzles, and books. This year, Steinmühle had six prize winners: Paula Auschill (7a) and Ellen Hilt (7b) received third prizes, while Nela Haeberle (6c), Livia Schulze (5a), and Thorben Heß (5c) won second prizes. Mathilda Lambach (5b) not only won a first prize but also a Kangaroo T-shirt for the longest “kangaroo jump” (= the greatest number of consecutive correct answers). Congratulations!

Jan Audretsch in the Hesse Final

Thirteen students from our school qualified for the intermediate round of the Pangea Competition. Of these, Jan Audretsch was the only one to advance to the regional finals in Frankfurt. He is thus among the top 10 students in the region comprising “Hesse, Rhineland-Palatinate, Saarland, and German schools abroad.” Jan answered 11 of the 12 questions correctly.

The final will take place on June 16—unfortunately, he will also be competing that day in the National Math Olympiad in Würzburg as part of the Hessian team, so he will likely be unable to participate in this final round at all. We congratulate him on so much success!

“Saloon Stories,” “Peter Pan,” and “Train to Happiness”: Theater Workshop for 7th-Grade Classes

Archive, News

A bar in the Midwest. You can feel the heat on people’s faces. The bartender is standing at the bar, cleaning glasses. Class 7c drew the audience into exciting stories that took place in the saloon and around town.

Class 7a showed what can happen when parents leave their children alone, how eating habits change, and much more in their own adaptation of *Peter Pan*.

The varied, fun, and lively theater evening came to a close with hunted wild animals, quirky families, and people all traveling on the “Train to Happiness” with Class 7b. The audience thanked the young actors with a long round of applause for their entertaining performances, which were presented on two consecutive days.

Renovation of the boarding school buildings continues

Extensive Renovations Underway at the Main Building / New Interior Design Creates a Comfortable Atmosphere
It’s no secret that a comfortable atmosphere is key to a good learning environment. It’s simply easier to live and learn in a pleasant setting! The main building of the Steinmühle Boarding School is therefore currently undergoing extensive renovations. Other buildings are set to follow. For the historic buildings—namely the main building, the mill, and the administration building—Steinmühle Boarding School is coordinating closely with the authorities. A restoration faithful to the original design is not only a requirement but also a matter close to the client’s heart.

Both inside and out, experts are restoring the main building—which first appears in the Steinmühlen Chronicle in 1794—to its former glory. The renovation of the half-timbered structure is in professional hands. As for the facade, the half-timbered structure is being repainted. The new roof is thermally insulated, thereby addressing energy efficiency considerations. The stairwell is being redesigned to match the building’s style and layout.

Life at the Steinmühle Boarding School: It all started with a model room
To create a cozy atmosphere with a modern touch, the students’ rooms were also spruced up. It was time for new furniture!
“It’s very important to us that our students feel comfortable in their rooms and see them as a place of retreat and relaxation,” say the boarding school’s administration and management. Naturally, the furnishings and atmosphere play a key role in this.
When considering what the students like, the school simply asked the students themselves. It seems that the interior design trend among the students is moving away from the classic wardrobe toward dressers or clothes racks.
Last year, the boarding school council—which serves as the representative body for the boarding school community and consists of members from each residential group—formed a small project group on this topic called the “Steinmühlen Showroom.” The team visited a well-known furniture store together, selected furniture, and calculated costs. A model room was then ordered, furnished, and tested. Following the test phase, the main building—as the first residential group—has now been completely furnished in this style and is already occupied.

The students were allowed to choose for themselves
“I really liked that. It was really cool that we got to choose and plan things ourselves,” says Leon Sauer. The 19-year-old student, who is currently in his senior year, had been living at the Steinmühle boarding school for seven years, served on the boarding school council in 2016–17, and participated in the “Model Room” project. For the past two months, he has been living in one of the newly furnished rooms in the main building, and he’s been delighted with the improved atmosphere, more storage space, and greater design flexibility. At the end of the school year, Leon will leave Steinmühle for Hamburg, where he’ll begin an apprenticeship at BMW—his dream job.
He’s happy for the students coming after him that the modern furniture has arrived: “A lovely living atmosphere has been created here. It’s really great.”

Further Renovations to Be Completed by the End of 2019
For the Steinmühle Boarding School, renovation work on the expansive, nature-rich grounds—as part of the “Stammhaus” project—is far from complete.
Last year, the boarding school administration office and the infirmary were renovated, and the roof of the mill was replaced.
Further renovation work inside and on the boarding school buildings will continue through the end of 2019: the Westfalenhaus, Hessenhaus, administration building, Bremerhaus, and Biohaus are on the schedule.

The Main Building of the Steinmühle Boarding School—Its History

The history of the main house dates back to the Middle Ages. As a residence and part of a complex consisting of a mill, stables, and farm buildings, it first appears in the chronicle of the Steinmühle in 1794 with an entry describing the condition of the residence: “[…] the stone miller Johann Carlé reports that there is reason to fear the collapse of the residence due to rot in the wood. […]. As a result, oak trees from the Marburg Forest and fir trees from the Wildersdorf Forest were provided, and orders were given to construct a new building.” The new building was presumably erected on the old foundation walls.

After passing through the hands of many tenants and owners, the stone mill—along with its residential building, stables, barn, and farmstead—lay abandoned from 1935 onward, and the buildings fell into disrepair.

Residence for the first 17 boarding students

In the place where the Müllers lived for centuries next to the new stone mill (built between 1494 and 1526), it has been our main building since 1949—the first home for the founding Buurman family and the first seventeen boarding students who arrived in October of that same year.

Previously, the building had been expanded toward the Lahn River to include a boarding school kitchen and a dining hall, as well as a central heating system and a washroom with a toilet and shower. The kitchen was located on the lowest floor, which is now the workshop; meals were transported to the upper dining hall via a food elevator: “A terrible contraption, since people were constantly getting injured there” (Buurman Sr.).

In 1961, the kitchen and dining hall were moved to the newly constructed building on Mühlgraben. The vacated dining hall was converted into living quarters, and the kitchen was turned into a classroom.

From 1969 to 1978, this building served as a kindergarten for employees’ children, and the Lahn grounds were fenced off and used as a playground with a sandbox and a swing set. The children and their teacher had to climb out through the windows using a small staircase to get outside. As the group grew smaller and the number of new children declined (due to the “birth control pill slump”), the kindergarten project was discontinued, and this lowest floor of the main building was converted into a workshop with a pottery studio and bicycle repair shop.

Educational Focus on intensive academic support

The two upper floors of the main building and the annex have since been occupied by middle and high school boarding students. The boarding school administration and the health care staff are now located on the lower level.

The old half-timbered house, which is currently being renovated—with a garden, a beach volleyball court, and a swimming dock right on the Lahn River, as well as spacious rooms and common areas—offers a cozy atmosphere where residents can feel at home. The educational focus of this residential group is on intensive academic support.

Canoeing, Hiking, Camping, Film Studio: Steinmühle Boarding School’s Experiential Education Weekend Teaches Students How to Cope with the Unfamiliar

Archive

For one student, spending the night in a tent is a real treat. Another student has always dreamed of visiting the Babelsberg film studio. – The “Experiential Education Weekend,” held annually at the Steinmühle boarding school, once again offered students a variety of options to pursue their interests and further develop their personalities—away from their everyday lives and familiar surroundings.
The options could hardly have been more diverse: camping at Lake Eder, hiking in the Sauerland, a cultural trip to Potsdam, or a canoe trip on the Fulda River. “Everyone could choose whatever they wanted—but participation is mandatory,” explains the leadership team at Steinmühle Boarding School. The experiential education weekend is designed to allow students to spend time together in new group settings and gain new experiences.

Camping at Lake Eder: Stamina Put to the Test on Bicycles
First, we took the train to Kassel and then on to Wolfhagen. The bike ride from there to Lake Eder covered a distance of just under 40 kilometers and was quite challenging for the registered participants due to the significant elevation gain. Although the group arrived at the agreed-upon meeting point exhausted that evening, everyone was ultimately able to complete the entire route.
Freshly grilled food and some games—including “Werwolf,” which is very popular with the children—made for a pleasant evening, and everyone later fell into bed, exhausted. The next day was spent at camp. After a hearty breakfast, the day passed with many small games and sports activities, including archery, Viking chess, and swimming in Lake Eder—though the water was still quite cold, and some were out of the water faster than they’d gone in, much to the amusement of the rest of the group.
The next morning, after the tents had been taken down and the luggage stowed away, the group cycled from Lake Eder along the very beautiful and highly recommended Eder Cycle Path to Frankenberg, and from there took the train on to Marburg. Everyone was proud and relieved to have successfully completed the roughly 80-kilometer route without any significant problems and considered the weekend a complete success overall.

Hiking Through the Sauerland
For two teachers and eight students, a vacation rental in Bödefeld near Schmallenberg served as their temporary lodging while hiking through the Sauerland. The group spent the first day enjoying a barbecue together, planning their route, and playing board games. Skipbo and various card games proved to be particularly popular. The next day was all about hiking: 14 kilometers were on the itinerary. The route included two lookout points: the Kreuzberg and the Irreplatz. The latter, bathed in bright sunshine, was the perfect spot for a long break with some refreshments. In the evening, burgers and games were on the agenda. On the last day, after a leisurely breakfast, a visit to a summer toboggan run was one of the highlights of the entire trip.

Visiting Potsdam: Film Studios and Sanssouci

Well-known TV series and movies have been filmed at the Babelsberg Film Studios: *Schloss Einstein*, *GZSZ*, *Homeland*, *Counterpart*, *Berlin Station*, *The Bourne Ultimatum*, *V for Vendetta*, *The Three Musketeers*, and *The Hunger Games*—to name just a few. Getting a glimpse inside the studios was the wish of another group of boarding school students who had chosen to take a cultural trip to Potsdam. Their stay in the city just outside Berlin also included a tour of Sanssouci Palace, the former summer residence of Frederick the Great, King of Prussia. They spent the night in a hostel. Filled with new experiences, the group from Steinmühle Boarding School set off on their journey home.

Canoe Trip: Getting a Feel for the Boat
The fourth boarding school group, which had chosen to go canoeing, undertook a 15-kilometer trip from Kämmerzell to Pfordt. The group of 11 students and 2 teachers got their first taste of rapids and capsizing. The program also included an evening barbecue and a cozy get-together. They spent the night in a barn in Pfordt.

“Developing Social Skills Along the Way”
The so-called “house trips” have proven successful for the Steinmühle boarding school. “It’s not just about physical activity in nature, but—from an educational perspective—about acquiring additional social skills, learning to cope with unfamiliar and new situations, and fostering holistic personal development,” says the leadership team. “It’s experiential learning in the context of holistic education.”

Growth and Digitalization: Field Trip to Viessmann

Archive, News

This year’s educational field trip organized by the Steinmühlenkollegium took participants to Allendorf/Eder to visit Viessmann, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of heating systems. A tour of the Infocenter, Galeria, production facilities, and technical center provided insight into the company’s product portfolio development and growth; through foresight regarding energy resources, innovative strategies, and sophisticated optimization processes—among other factors—the company has become a global leader. The critical importance of qualified employees in an increasingly digital world was then explained in a presentation. With the right perspective on digitalization, it is not an end in itself, but rather a means to an end.

He’s already on the district championship team: For Jan Audretsch, the goal now is to win the state championship

Archive, News

Mathematics is his specialty—and Jan Audretsch has now impressively demonstrated this in yet another competition following his qualification for the National Mathematics Olympiad. As one of seven remaining students from the local area who won their district rounds at the 50th Hessian Mathematics Competition, the eighth-grader from Steinmühlen recently took the exam in Kassel that will determine who becomes the state champion.

50,000 took part

A total of 50,796 eighth-grade students from 509 Hauptschulen, Realschulen, Gesamtschulen, and Gymnasien participated in the school-level round of the 50th Hessian Mathematics Competition. In the second round, 1,924 students remained in the competition, and after the third round, 173 district winners remained across Hesse.

Honoring the State Champions

Now that the final exam has been taken, Jan and the entire Steinmühlen team—made up of classmates, teachers, and school administrators—are eagerly awaiting the final decision. The awards ceremony for the state winners will take place on June 12 in Darmstadt.

Math as a Door Opener

Even back in Kassel, after completing their work, the young mathematicians received high praise from company and school representatives for their achievements to date. VetterTec GmbH, a company based in Kassel, the Hessenmetall Nordhessen employers’ association—which is supporting the competition for the 17th time—and the Kassel State School Board highlighted the young people’s outstanding achievements, ambition, and dedication, describing mathematics as a key skill that opens many doors in one’s career.

Tennis: Steinmühle Finishes in a Solid 3rd Place at the JtfO Regional Finals

Archive, News

The Steinmühlen tennis team, competing in Competition Class II for mixed teams, took home a solid third-place finish at the regional finals of the “Youth Trains for the Olympics” competition in Wetzlar.

In the group stage, the Steinmühle team won their first match against the Wilhelm-von-Oranien-Schule from Dillenburg by a fairly wide margin, 10–4. After the girls struggled in their singles matches—losing both—and the boys won their singles matches decisively, the score was tied at 4–4 heading into the final doubles matches. Steinmühle ultimately prevailed convincingly in both the mixed doubles and the two singles matches.

The boys’ doubles team a commanding victory

In the second group match against Taunusschule from Bad Camberg, the team was now playing for first place in the group, which would have secured a slightly easier opponent in the semifinals. This match also followed a similar pattern at first. After the two girls’ and boys’ singles matches, the score was once again 4–4, so the outcome would once more be decided by the doubles and mixed doubles matches. It quickly became apparent that our boys’ doubles team was once again on track for a commanding victory, but the mixed doubles team found itself on the losing end early in the match. After taking a 3–0 lead in the girls’ doubles, victory in this match seemed within reach, but our girls lost their concentration a bit toward the end and ultimately had to settle for a 3–3 tie. The higher number of games won across all matches ultimately tipped the scales in favor of the school from Bad Camberg, despite the score being tied at 7–7.

Despite facing strong opponents never gave up

As expected, the Steinmühle team didn’t stand a chance in the semifinal against the eventual tournament champion from Oberursel, as some of their players competed at a significantly higher skill level. Nevertheless, our team never gave up during the match and tried to hold their own as best they could. In the end, however, the result was a sobering 0–14. In the other semifinal, Bad Camberg did indeed prevail and, like the eventual champion from Oberursel, secured a spot in the Hesse finals.

Next year, our tennis team will certainly be back in action and will try to reach the Hesse finals, just as we have in the past two years.
