Nela Haeberle has once again won over the hearts of the judges

Archive, News

Nela Haeberle from Class 6c has advanced to the next round of the reading competition once again. After winning the Marburg city round in February, she has now also won the district round of the reading competition, which was held at the Giessen City Library. On May 24, Nela will compete in the state finals at the Sparda-Bank in Frankfurt. There, she will face Sophie-Charlotte Richter from the Herderschule in Giessen for the second time. Nela shares the top spot she earned in Giessen with Sophie-Charlotte; first place was awarded twice.
Nine participants appeared before the five-member jury in Giessen, in alphabetical order. The jury consisted of Prof. Dr. Sascha Feuchert (Institute of German Studies at Justus Liebig University in Giessen), Manuela Gries (deputy library director of the Giessen City Library), Anna-Lena Heid (Program Director of the Literary Center in Giessen), Dr. Ira Kasperowski (Deputy Director of the Giessen University Library), and Ralph Kohlheyer (Managing Director of Rickersche Universitätsbuchhandlung).
The judges evaluated reading technique and interpretation, as well as the contestant’s choice of book. Nela Haeberle had chosen the book *Hexendämmerung* by Magnolia Steel. Afterward, she had to read a text by another author.
The Steinmühle student handled her performance with poise and confidence, though she doesn’t hide the fact that “…you’re always pretty nervous beforehand.” After all, she says, it’s all about conveying the right atmosphere, speaking clearly, and maintaining the right reading pace.
Steinmühle, led by German teacher Lisa Braun, is keeping its fingers crossed for Nela as she moves on to the next stage of the competition in Frankfurt. The reading competition is organized by the German Publishers and Booksellers Association.

2018 State Quadrathlon in Erbach in the Odenwald

Archive

Jana Vollhardt and her team from the Marburg-Biedenkopf District Equestrian Association won the Hesse Championship in the four-event competition on March 10–11, 2018.

Thanks in no small part to the excellent preparation of both horse and rider—provided by Steinmühle trainer Beate Schridde, who also made her horse available for the competition—the 10th-grade student was able to secure victory with her team in a thrilling competition.

After the first day of competition, which featured dressage and the 3,000-meter run, Jana’s team was still in third place, but on the second day of competition, following excellent swim times and exceptionally strong jumping rounds, they confidently took the lead among all participating teams from Hesse by a significant margin.

With this victory, Jana and two of her teammates have qualified for the tryout camp in Alsfeld this coming weekend. That’s where it will be decided who will represent Hesse in the National Quadrathlon.

Another rider from RuS Steinmühle e.V., Aila Möschl, also made the trip to Erbach. The 10-year-old competed in the state junior quadrathlon and, with her mixed-gender team, achieved an impressive 12th-place finish.

Successful Conclusion of the Ring Tournament and Youth Cup Season

Archive

Last weekend in Wehrda, things couldn’t have gone better for our riders!

On Saturday at the Youth Cup, the Steinmühle team confidently secured the day’s victory. And that wasn’t all; their lead over the other teams was enough to clinch the overall victory in the 2018 Youth Cup season and, with it, the district championship title!

The Youth Cup team has qualified for the North Hesse championship and will travel to Ziegenhain on April 29, 2018, to represent the Marburg-Biedenkopf district.

And on Sunday, too, our team had every reason to celebrate! In the Ringturnier—a tournament series that, like the Youth Cup, includes dressage and theory as well as a show jumping course—our riders secured the day’s victory and second place overall in the district championship.

All in all, we can look back on a successful and enjoyable 2018 ring tournament and youth cup season!

Stone Mill Art at the Climbing Gym

Archive, News

Paintings, drawings, and prints have been on display on the climbing walls of the Marburg Volksbank Climbing Gym since the end of March. These small works of art are located behind the Plexiglas panels that were formerly used for route signage and explore themes related to climbing and the mountain world.

Ines Vielhaben, an art teacher at Steinmühlen, came up with the idea for this unusual exhibition. Since the climbing gym opened, she has been spending a large part of her free time there.

Together with the 10th-grade students in the “Drawing and Illustration” elective course, Ines Vielhaben began working on the paintings a few months ago. Her former students from the advanced art class and an art student from Flensburg, who was completing her internship at the Steinmühle, were also inspired by the idea of an art exhibition for the climbing gym.

Jose, who is in charge of bolting the routes in the climbing gym, is delighted by the variety of designs and artistic techniques: “This gives the individual sections of the wall a new character.” The artworks shown here represent a selection and are by Nora Hepting (10c), Jana Vollhardt (10a), Hannah Eichstädt (former Steinmühlen student/graduated in 2017, advanced art course), and Ines Vielhaben.

Bronze for Steinmühlen Rower Dustin Brömer

Archive, News

At this year’s central spring long-distance regatta organized by the German Rowing Association (DRV) in Leipzig, up-and-coming rower Dustin Brömer won the bronze medal for RuS Steinmühle in the follow-up event. After two training sessions on site the day before—covering 10 and 6 kilometers—the ambitious Steinmühle athlete was feeling confident heading into the race. On the course, which he knew well from training camp, he had to contend with a headwind during the competition.
Nevertheless, the race got off to a good start. After about 3,250 meters, Dustin was even able to catch up to a competitor. He overcame a subsequent dip in energy, regained his composure, and crossed the finish line with confidence. This overall improvement in performance is all the more remarkable given that Dustin Brömer had been forced to take a long break due to his protracted injuries.
At the training camp, both Dustin and Steinmühlen rower Lasse Jacob had already posted strong training results. “A great training camp for both of them,” commented coach Martin “Stromi” Strohmenger, who is typically rather reserved with his assessments and predictions. He views the result achieved particularly in light of the fact that Dustin competed in the open class. “A bold, courageous race,” the coach summed up. He said the team can head into the season with a positive outlook.
Dustin Brömer now has further plans: to win a medal at the German Championships. He has set a rigorous training schedule for himself: “Until then, I’ll be training six times a week.”

Bands on Stage 2018: A Colorful Evening with a Surprise Performance

Archive, News

The bands and ensembles at the Steinmühle offer a wide variety of musical performances. Visitors got to see how this mix can come together to create an entertaining evening at “Bands on Stage” on Monday at the Forum.

The AG Band from grades 5 and 6 kicked things off. Their performance featured vocals combined with various instruments: violin, saxophone, piano, and guitar, along with two drummers and a bassist. The group played and sang under the direction of Frank Wemme, performing “Boulevard of Broken Dreams” and “Firework.” The saxophone ensemble from the Marburg Music School, led by Jörg Eichberger, entertained the audience with rhythms ranging from swing to Bach: The wind players earned enthusiastic applause for their performances of “Mercy, Mercy, Mercy,” “Charleston,” “Solitude” by Duke Ellington, and the Bach Air from Orchestral Suite No. 3 in D major.

The Hamilton Project, led by Talea Funk from Class 10b, is one of the program highlights that have been part of the musical evenings at Steinmühle for some time now. Various singing roles have been cast, including not only the protagonist Alexander Hamilton but also his wife, his sister, rivals such as Thomas Jefferson, and others. The audience heard four songs from the musical of the same name.

The band Fynn Konnertz & Tom Herfert & Friends is known for their impressive performances on saxophone, guitar, keyboard, bass, and electronic drums. The surprise guest appearance by Daniel Sans and Rosie Boebel during the Spandau Ballet song “Through The Barricades” drew additional applause.

Vocals, saxophone, trombone, euphonium, piano, two guitars, bass, and drums came together in the StoneMill House Band, led by Frank Wemme, for the songs “Smooth” and “Levitation.” Before the same band brought the evening to a musical close with “Clocks” and “Feeling Good,” the jazz ensemble (vocals, saxophone, trombone, euphonium, guitar, bass) performed the catchy numbers “How Long Has This Been Going On?,” “Work Song,” and “Hanky Panky.”

The absence of the boarding school band—which always spreads good cheer—likely had similar causes to the fact that some rows of seats in the Forum remained empty: The wave of colds and flu seems far from over. Meanwhile, the boarding school provided refreshments during the intermission through the Tea Room Club. WU Sound & Light, led by Werner Eismann and Sam Kempkes (Class 11d), provided the appropriate lighting for the event.

“Youth Training for the Olympics”: Steinmühlen Soccer Team Wins District Championship Again

Archive, News

Great joy for Michael Neirich’s team: Our Competition Class II soccer players have once again won the district championship this year on the artificial turf field in Kirchhain. This year’s two opponents were the Georg-Büchner-Schule in Stadtallendorf and the Freiherr-von-Stein-Schule in Gladenbach. The fact that these two teams faced off—resulting in a scoreless draw—already put us in a very strong position. Highly focused, our students in grades 8 through 10 took the field for their first match against Stadtallendorf in Game 2. A convincing performance, highlighted by a hat trick from Jakob Reinhard, ultimately resulted in a well-deserved 3–0 victory. This meant that a draw against Gladenbach in the tournament’s final match would be enough. In this match, the Steinmühlen players didn’t show their best soccer; both teams played nervously, and so it wasn’t until three minutes before the end that Adrian Bruchmann tapped in a cross from Jakob Reinhard to make it 1–0. A lapse in our defense then led to the 1–1 equalizer in the final minute. Shortly afterward, however, the prudent referee Sam Kempkes blew the whistle to end the game.

This means that Steinmühle has once again qualified for the regional tournament on April 18 at Georg-Gassmann Stadium in Marburg. Very strong opponents await us there, especially the team from Gießen. Unfortunately, we’ll likely be the underdogs that day, since the entire 9th-grade team (eight players from that grade were on the field today) will be on a school trip.

Integration Through Climbing

Archive, News

Five boys from the Bremerhaus at Steinmühle took part in a pilot project organized by the Marburg section of the German Alpine Club (DAV) at the Volksbank climbing gym. Habib, Najdat, Ahmad, Jamal, and Mohammad (from left to right) successfully completed a top-rope course under the guidance of Steinmühle instructor Ines Vielhaben over four consecutive Sundays and are now eligible, through the project titled “Integration through Climbing,” one year of free admission and equipment rental upon presentation of their top-rope certificate. In return, the young men volunteer to help organize climbing competitions. The section is extending this offer to other refugees. Those interested can contact the Volksbank Climbing Gym.
