This year, too, numerous students took part in the first two rounds of the Math Olympiad. This Olympiad is organized as a three-stage competition in which the top students in each grade qualify for the next round.
The qualification process took place step by step. Last year, all students first had the opportunity to work through the problems in a homework competition. In November, the second round took place at our school in the form of a four-hour written exam.
After an independent review of the top exam papers at the Center for Mathematics in Bensheim, the participants for the third round were selected. Once again, Jan Audretsch (Class 8b) made it into the top 20 young talents in Hesse. Since last year, he has been actively participating in the “Youth Trains in Mathematics” support program run by the “Education and Talent” Foundation. He regularly receives instructional materials through the program, the content of which he must study on his own and then apply to solve extensive problems.
Yuhe Lin: Excellent reading comprehension after just two years of German
For the first time ever, a high school student—Yuhe Lin (Class 11e)—made it to the next round. Yuhe is from China and only began learning German two years ago. His achievement is all the more remarkable when you consider that the problems posed in the Olympiad require not only extensive mathematical skills but also an extremely strong grasp of reading comprehension.
Both students recently participated in the Hessian State Competition in Darmstadt. There, they had to demonstrate their skills in two four-hour exams. They had to solve problems from various areas of geometry and logic. However, these were not the classic types of problems one normally encounters in exams. Rather, they involve problems whose solutions cannot simply be found by applying a memorized formula. In addition to strong logical thinking skills, it is important to present comprehensive solution paths in a clear and detailed manner.
Yuhe achieved a remarkable 27 out of a possible 40 points in this round. Jan performed even better, securing an outstanding second place in his age group with 34 points.
Math Department Chair Constanze Oestreicher-Gold and the entire school community offer their proud congratulations!
