Steinmühle—a community on the move: Register for the Marburg Night Marathon

Contests & Awards, Life at Boarding School, News, Sports & Health, Steinmühle on the Road

For this fantastic event, we’ve tweaked our tagline “Steinmühle—a community that supports” slightly: A community that runs! This slogan is the theme of our participation in this year’s 26th Marburg Night Marathon. It starts on Friday, July 4, at 7 p.m.

Achievements are not the main focus

The participation of Steinmühle and its entire school and boarding school community is both a tradition and legendary. Students, teachers, educators, parents, and alumni all join in to be part of the event. It’s less about the results and more about having fun, says Principal Björn Gemmer, who is one of the most consistent participants.

Marcel Kalb is pulling the strings

Our school athletic director, Marcel Kalb, is in charge of the Steinmühle. Please contact him if you’d like to sign up or have any questions. You can find more information on the poster shown here.

We’re looking forward to an entertaining evening, at the end of which we’re sure to conclude once again: Things are going well for us!

A call from Steinmühlen teachers Ines Vielhaben and Antje Seel to participate in the “Stadtradeln” competition:

Dear students, dear parents, dear faculty, and dear boarding school staff,
we would like to invite you to participate in the 2025 City Cycling Challenge. From May 24, 2025, through June 13, 2025, we at Steinmühle can compete to become the most bike-friendly school in Marburg. Over the past three years, we’ve already achieved a fantastic second-place finish—now let’s work together to take it up a notch!
The Steinmühle is idyllically situated just off the Planetenweg and is accessible by bike. Many of you already bike here regularly during the warmer months. But during the campaign period, every kilometer counts—whether it’s on your way to school, a post-work ride, or a weekend tour. Just log all your rides at
using the STADTRADELN app and help us rack up kilometers for our team!
The university town of Marburg is presenting the following awards:
– The school that cycled the most kilometers overall,
– The school that cycled the most kilometers per participant (average),
– The school that was able to motivate the most students to participate.
From Steinmühle:
– The class that cycles the farthest will win a special field trip to Seepark Niederweimar, including admission:
– The participant who cycles the most kilometers will receive a €20 Marburg gift certificate:
– We’ll raffle off five €10 Marburg gift cards
among all participants who have cycled more than 300 km.
City Cycling is a great opportunity to promote sustainable mobility, daily physical activity, and climate protection—and it’s twice as much fun when we do it together!
New this year:
On May 25, 2025, a big kickoff event will take place from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m.—you can find all the details in the attached flyer.
The Steinmühle is already registered, and a Steinmühle team called “Steinmühle Marburg School and Boarding School” has signed up. Anyone interested can register for the competition via the following link, join the Steinmühle team, and start cycling:

Steinmühle ranks among the eight most dedicated STEM schools in Germany

Contests & Awards, News, STEM, Talent Development

Last year, it was our participation in the national competition; this year, our team was the only participating school to win four titles at the regional competition. Now we have it in writing: Steinmühle School & Boarding School is among the eight most dedicated schools in Germany in the fields of mathematics, computer science, natural sciences, and technology (STEM). This result came from our recent application for the “Jugend forscht Schule 2025” award, which was sponsored by the Conference of Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs.

“The success of the Jugend forscht competition is inextricably linked to the extraordinary commitment of the schools and their project advisors. They guide the students along their journey, promote inquiry-based, creative learning, and encourage them to follow their curiosity and explore exciting scientific questions. In doing so, schools lay the foundation for the long-term support of children and young people in the STEM subjects,” state the Board of Directors of the Jugend forscht e.V. Foundation and the Secretary General of the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs in a letter to Principal Björn Gemmer.

“Exemplary support”

Steinmühle is particularly committed to the “Jugend forscht” program and provides exemplary support to young talent in the STEM fields. The faculty deserves our heartfelt thanks for this.

We at Steinmühle would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to all the teachers of STEM subjects, led by their coordinator, Dr. Jutta Töhl-Borsdorf. Without you, this achievement would never have been possible.

Note: The photo accompanying this article was taken at the state competition of “Jugend forscht.”

Strong performances by Philian, Anfissa, and Robin at the Hessian Math Competition

Contests & Awards, News, STEM, Talent Development

In the second round of the 57th Mathematics Competition of the State of Hesse, 38 school champions from 8th grade in the Marburg-Biedenkopf district competed to demonstrate their mathematical skills. The Steinmühle High School was represented by three talented students: Philian Merle, Anfissa Kaschte, and Robin Richter.

In the first round, all three had achieved the best scores at our school, reports math teacher Maximilian Moll. Philian and Anfissa achieved outstanding scores among the G9 students, while Robin qualified as the top G8 student for the second round, which took place at the Elisabethschule.

Unlike the first round, the second round consists entirely of optional problems. The students are given six challenging problems, and their four best scores count toward their final score. All three participants performed very well, with Philian Merle’s performance particularly noteworthy. With 31 out of a possible 40 points, he took an outstanding 4th place.

The school community extends its warmest congratulations to Philian, Anfissa, and Robin on their achievements and wishes them continued enjoyment of math!

“Even when we didn’t have much, we had each other”

Languages & International Affairs, News, Social Engagement, Steinmühle on the Road

Learning to make do with little, to live simply, and to do without Central European comforts for a while—that’s what a stay in Tanzania is all about. It’s about looking beyond one’s own horizons, getting to know everyday life on another continent, redefining one’s standards, and appreciating the value of community. – For the second time, students from Steinmühle visited their partner school in Africa, the One World Secondary School Kilimanjaro in Kisangara. Their conclusion: We’re going back. Despite some inconveniences and a lack of comforts.

“We’ve rediscovered a lot of things”

There were three of them—and that was a good thing: Paul Schicha, Matteo Deja, and Ida Kraft. “When we didn’t have something, we had each other.” Impressive words from tenth-graders who tell their story without drama or sugarcoating.

Getting used to the cell phone-free time—exactly twenty-three and a half hours a day for six weeks—went faster than we expected. “We discovered many things we would otherwise hardly have access to.”

Work, relax, philosophize

It’s true—you can survive without a cell phone. The interns’ projects, always taking place on-site, invited everyone to join in: painting workshops, sports days with soccer and basketball on Wednesdays and Saturdays. People made music, and the German classroom was painted in a yin-and-yang pattern.

Work, but also relaxation, were part of the routine in an environment where nature and the circumstances were accepted as they were—with a touch of homesickness at first, and, once I had settled in, the question of whether money really does bring happiness.

When questions arose, solutions were found

The One World Secondary School Kilimanjaro, founded by the German couple Swantje and Dr. Karl-Heinz Köhler, is a German-Tanzanian project. Schoolchildren are not beaten here—an absolute exception in Tanzania. School uniforms are part of everyday life at the One World School. The school’s in-house tailor lives and works on site, making pants, polo shirts, and long-sleeved shirts. Prolonged exposure to the sun is not recommended.

For the most part, the Tanzanian students’ schedule was the same as that of the guests from Marburg. They had a bit of a hard time with the food—it was very simple and very monotonous—but they found ways to cope.

A safari and three days on the Indian Ocean

And there were many things that enriched the stay of the Steinmühlen Trio from Class 10a. Jogging during the cooler part of the day, a hike, a visit to a restaurant. Among the highlights was the trip to Moshi, Marburg’s sister city, which, with its 220,000 residents, is the cleanest city in Tanzania. A visit to the market, three days at a beach hotel on the Indian Ocean, and a five-day safari trip made up for the bean-heavy menu, which—after consulting with the “food leader”—was revised to include spaghetti, rice with tomato sauce, and fruit.

“We could talk about anything and always find a solution,” Matteo says.

A Cow for the School Festival

Dr. Beatrix Freibert, a teacher at Steinmühle and a mentor during the African “introductory phase,” confirms this. The somewhat different way of evaluating students, the different way of showing respect—she, too, remains fondly remembered, just like the cow, a gift from a student’s father for the school festival.

Visit to the Art School and the Maasai Museum

To see and learn as much as possible, the students from Steinmühle were introduced to many local aspects. They visited the sisal factory, which exports its products to Saudi Arabia; stopped by the salt factory and the art school; and made a brief visit to Bagamoyo, the “German capital,” which also features Indian and Arab influences. Also inspiring were Arusha, the second-largest city; the national park; the snake park; and the Maasai Museum.

The school itself, run by Steinmühle, is a boarding school that houses about 150 young people aged 11–24. They study English, German, and Swahili. Dr. Beatrix Freibert noted: “Community is valued even more highly here than it is back home. Everyone takes a great deal of responsibility for themselves and is an active part of the community. People help one another there—they have no other choice.”

I’ve come to appreciate the standard at home: “It brought tears to my eyes”

Paul, Matteo, and Ida confirm this; they’ve gotten to know practically all the students. “Everyone was very friendly.” The fact that two other students slept in Paul and Matteo’s room—well, that’s just how it is.

“We’ve come to appreciate the Standard at home.”

Paul remembers. With the harsh conditions in Tanzania still fresh in his mind, he returned home and opened the refrigerator. He recounts that moment as if he were still deeply moved. “It brought tears to my eyes.”

This is where Steinmühlen honey is made: well protected near the beehive

Ecology and Sustainability, News, Politics, Business & Responsibility

The fact that the Steinmühle also has bees and offers its own honey was already on display at last fall’s festival. As part of a collaborative project, elementary school students from the Erich Kästner School in Cappel were able to explore the topic in even greater depth. Equipped with beekeeping suits, the girls and boys not only learned details about the bees’ proverbial industriousness but were also able to see for themselves the results of their hard work.

Dr. Sven Freibert teaches math and biology at Steinmühle. With the help of his colleague Niklas Berthold from the Steinmühle bee team, he aimed to introduce the children from the neighboring school to the buzzing little colony on the Steinmühle grounds. Bee expert Dr. Sven Freibert found the students to be very well-informed: “We started by talking a bit about the ecology and life of bees. Since the children had just covered the topic of ‘bees’ in class, we were able to move right into hands-on activities.”

About Worker Bees, Drones, and Queen Cells

We started off with a “dry” specimen—that is, a beehive. “Using it as a model, we discussed the structure—the movable floor with the entrance, the honey chamber, the brood chamber, and the lid—and learned about their individual functions, including the technical terms.”

To get a closer look, five children at a time were then allowed to put on the beekeeping suits—what an exciting experience! Dr. Sven Freibert: “We then took this group over to the ‘inhabited’ hives and observed the bees’ lives up close. We saw worker bees, drones, queen cells with their surrounding area, and honeycombs filled with honey.” Fortunately, according to the Steinmühlen teacher, no child was stung during these observations.

“It was a wonderful day”

The group reported at the end that a honey tasting had actually been planned afterward, but unfortunately could not take place due to time constraints. Maybe there will be a next time? Anna Zwickenpflug, a teacher at the Erich Kästner School, noticed that her students were very enthusiastic about the visit to the Steinmühle and raved, “It was a wonderful day with the bees.”

Generations before them used to run around the boathouse

Contests & Awards, Events & Celebrations, News, Sports & Health

The weather was perfect, and so were the other conditions: Marcel Kalb, the school’s physical education director, and his team of teachers were greeted at the traditional spring run for grades 5 and 6 at the Steinmühle School & Boarding School by cheerful students who, with a healthy dose of ambition, ran the same course as generations before them.

“All in all, it was another very exciting event with lots of positive energy and plenty of sportsmanship,” said Marcel Kalb happily. “It’s truly gratifying to see how a sporting challenge can motivate a young community and drive them to achieve their best!”

Oliver, Caroline, Abraham, and Anouk were the fastest in their age group

Oliver Mand and Caroline Hecker (both in 5c) were the fastest in the 5th-grade division. Abraham Sow and Anouk Sedlmayr (both in 6a) posted the best time in the 6th-grade division.

StoneMINT Certificate 2025

Contests & Awards, News, STEM, Talent Development

It’s almost that time again: For the second time, we’ll be awarding our school’s own StoneMINT certificate to this year’s high school graduates! With this certificate, we recognize outstanding achievements and dedication in the fields of mathematics, computer science, natural sciences, and technology (MINT) throughout their entire school career.

What is the StoneMINT certificate?

The StoneMINT Certificate recognizes outstanding achievements and exceptional dedication in STEM fields at the secondary school levels I and II. The award may be granted with the distinction “with very good results” or “with honors.”

What are the requirements?

To receive the STEM certificate, the following criteria must be met:

Scientific Work: Participation and placements in “Schüler experimentieren” or “Jugend forscht,” or in science or math Olympiads.

Academic proficiency: Enrollment in advanced STEM courses with a grade point average of at least “good” or “very good.”

Additional STEM activities: Participation in other STEM activities (e.g., competitions, workshops, plusMINT camps, internships, special academic achievements, etc.).

The exact criteria for awarding the certificate are listed in the sample certificate. There you will find detailed information about the requirements in each area.

All services are documented

Since some students far exceed the requirements, the complete individual STEM portfolio is printed on the certificate. This ensures that all achievements and activities are comprehensively documented and recognized—even those that go beyond the minimum requirements.

Even if you’re still in middle school or elementary school, you can start collecting now!

Questions?

If you have any questions about the StoneMINT certificate, our STEM coordinator, Dr. Jutta
Töhl-Borsdorf, will be happy to assist you (jutta.toehl@steinmuehle.net).

DS 13 Exhibition on Ideals of Beauty: Mirror, mirror on my cell phone…

Art, Music & Theater, News

Ideals of beauty have always existed—and they still do today. But in our time, they are everywhere, especially on social media. Young people are confronted every day with a flood of images that show them what is considered “beautiful.” Everyone looks for a role model, tries to fit in, and strives to get closer to these ideals. – Mirror, mirror on my phone, tell me, am I the king? (Alligatoah)

Self-presentation plays a central role

The play begins with a scene shaped by the media. The obsession with beauty ideals, coupled with the constant use of headphones, leads to less genuine, spontaneous interaction in public. Instead, self-presentation and self-affirmation take center stage—documented through selfies and Stories shared on social media.

Plagued by self-doubt

One of these teenagers, convincingly portrayed by Elias, is in the middle of creating a new live story about himself. But suddenly, he finds himself fascinated by a young woman who draws him in like magic. He dares to approach her and even includes her in his live stream. But before he can ask her out, doubts assail him: What if she says no? – I’m… I’m not like you. I’m not the type to make a good first impression.

Overcoming Uncertainty

This uncertainty is heightened by the contrast with two characters who are portrayed as the embodiment of perfection and self-improvement. The “Perfect One” confronts him defiantly: “And what exactly is ‘yourself’?” A stuttering boy who looks like he just rolled out of bed? But the Doubting One argues against this. He insists on spontaneity, authenticity, and the beauty of imperfection. Despite his insecurity, he decides to ask her out on a date.

Emotions Described with Humor

In the final scene, the audience finds itself immersed in the thoughts of the two protagonists as they prepare for their date. Emotions such as nervousness, springtime feelings, and daydreams are humorously portrayed and brought to life through impressive physical theater. At the same time, a video projection shows Elias and his crush sitting across from each other—but instead of looking at one another, they’re both busy perfecting their appearance in the mirror.

They finally look into each other’s eyes

The short performance concludes with a telling moment: The two finally look into each other’s eyes.
The audience—Music Class 13 and DS Class 12—was particularly enthusiastic about the expressive physical theater, the carefully selected music, and the impressive acting performances.

And here’s another prize: Leonard and Nicolas, you guys are the best!

Contests & Awards, Ecology and Sustainability, News, STEM, Talent Development

With their research into sustainable alternatives to conventional petroleum-based plastic wrap, Steinmühle students Leonard Berger and Nicolas Bohnstedt have really taken off. After taking first place in chemistry at the regional “Jugend forscht” competition, winning a special prize at the state competition, and even hosting a visit from a ZDF TV crew at Steinmühle in the meantime, they now have another success to report: Leonard and Nicolas won one of the top prizes in the “Jugend testet” competition, organized by Stiftung Warentest.

Which of the three grand prizes our students have won will be announced on June 5 at the awards ceremony in Berlin, to which the team—along with their advisor, Dr. Jutta Töhl-Borsdorf—has been invited. – We’d like to offer our heartfelt congratulations in advance and look forward to hearing the results you’ll bring back to Steinmühle!
