DELF Exams Successfully Passed

Contests & Awards, Languages & International Affairs, News

Once again this year, several students can celebrate earning their DELF diploma.
Nine students took the exam this year for this European-recognized language certificate, which certifies proficiency in reading and listening comprehension, as well as speaking and writing in French, according to the respective grade level.

Learned with motivation and a sense of personal responsibility

With a few practice sessions outside of class, along with great motivation and personal responsibility, the students in grades 9 (A2), 11 (B1), and 13 (B2) all passed and achieved very good results. The oral exam took place in Gießen, and the written exam was held at Steinmühle, both on Saturday mornings.

We are delighted by this extracurricular involvement and would like to congratulate the participants (from left to right): Parsa Vahhabzadeh (left), Felice Gurschi (3rd from left), Lotta Steinfeldt (4th from left), and Anna-Lisa Wilhelm (5th from left); on the right in the photo is subject teacher Kristina Sokoli.

Congratulations!

Become a Digital Media Expert

Contests & Awards, Digitalization & AI, News

This school year, we had the opportunity to experience the “Digital Heroes” elective course in 10th grade for the first time—an innovative project that was very well received by everyone involved. The goal was to train 10th-grade students to become digital media experts who would then pass on their knowledge to younger students using a peer-to-peer approach.

Staying Safe and Responsible Online

Under the guidance of Tim Elmshäuser, participants explored important topics related to the digital world in various workshops. The focus was on topics such as class chats, cyberbullying, and cybergrooming. The workshops for the younger grades were designed to be engaging and offered not only theoretical knowledge but also practical tips on how to navigate the internet safely and responsibly.

Contribution to the School Community’s Digital Literacy

The success of this first round has shown just how valuable it is to raise awareness among young people about the safe use of digital media and to turn them into advocates. The “Digital Heroes” have not only expanded their own knowledge but have also made an important contribution to the digital literacy of our school community. We look forward to continuing this project in the coming years!

Lots of fun, high motivation, and great success at the 7th-grade rowing event

News, Rowing, Sports & Health

Is the triathlon really that much fun? You bet! Everyone could see for themselves at the sports day at the Steinmühle boathouse. Because rowing is the athletic focus for 7th grade, the four classes—7a, 7b, 7c, and 7i—once again organized the Steinmühle rowing event this year.

As reported by sports and rowing instructor Michael Neirich, the students competed in a triathlon—consisting of the following disciplines—in a very positive atmosphere and with great athletic dedication:
– “200-meter Rowing Ergometer Challenge”
– “Monte Carlo” rowing rally in a four-person gig (three gig boats per class row a total time over a distance of 500m)
– “Individual run around the boathouse” (Each class entered five runners. They ran the “
” spring running circuit—approx. 1,200m)

Thanks to an outstanding performance in ergometer rowing, Class 7c ultimately celebrated the overall victory in the class standings with a 1.8-second lead in the overall average time.

Many thanks to the team that helped make this day a success.

An action-packed festival featuring sports, games, and diversity

Contests & Awards, News, Sports & Health

Leaving the Steinmühle campus for a change: The Lower Secondary School Sports Day and Diversity Day had been moved to a shared off-campus venue, namely the Georg-Gassmann Stadium.

Principal Björn Gemmer noted at the outset: “We live well and happily when we draw our zest for life from the diversity of people at Steinmühle, and are thus ready to showcase and celebrate talents—including in sports and through active collaboration.” – With this spirit, the day began—a day that the physical education department had prepared and executed with great ease, together with the 12th-grade students in the advanced course and additional helpers from among the student teachers.

Track and Field and Sports Tournaments

The event began—after a group warm-up and a short flash mob dance led by Maya Vielhaben—with the sprint, long jump, and ball throw—classic track and field events as part of the Federal Youth Games—were on the program, before the action shifted in the second half of the sports festival, following the final races over sprint and 800-meter distances, to the various class-level tournaments —ranging from dodgeball to soccer and 3×3 basketball to Ultimate Frisbee and beach volleyball—all organized by school athletic director Marcel Kalb and his colleagues.

Dishes from Around the World

The pleasant, spring-like, and rain-free weather contributed to the positive atmosphere that morning at Georg-Gassmann Stadium, which was also designated as Diversity Day and marked the kickoff for further student council activities at the school: The 12th-grade class offered dishes from around the world, which proved to be a wonderful complement to the sports and games festival—a school morning during which impressive athletic achievements were witnessed and celebrated, while everyone also enjoyed a relaxed time together in the open air.

Björn Wagner captured various moments in his photos. Ines Vielhaben contributed the photos from Diversity Day.

“Hopping” from problem to problem: Prizes in the Kangaroo Competition

Contests & Awards, News, STEM, Talent Development

The annual Kangaroo Competition is designed to spark an interest in mathematics and encourage students to engage with mathematical problems. In this competition, students from various grade levels who are skilled at arithmetic and problem-solving, can concentrate well, and are having a good day stand out in particular.

The competition is based on a multiple-choice format, reports subject teacher Maximilian Moll. Participants in grades 3 through 6 can earn a maximum of 120 points, while all others can earn a maximum of 150 points. The top approximately five percent of all participants nationwide in each grade level receive a 1st, 2nd, or 3rd prize. There is no more detailed breakdown or further comparisons. After all, the focus is on having fun with math and solving puzzles.
Our photo shows, from left to right, the award winners: Bent Deidl (2nd prize, Class 11d), Joel Chacko (1st prize and the “Long Jump” special prize, Class 5a), Emil Zuckermann (1st prize, Class 5a), Isabella Kuhl (2nd prize, Class 6a), and math teacher Maximilian Moll.

Missing from the photo: Theodor Wild (1st prize, Class 5i), Sophie Sacher (2nd prize, Class 5i), Orlando Geisel (2nd prize, Class 11d).

Musical Reading with a Trio of Children’s Book Authors

Art, Music & Theater, Collaborations & Partnerships, News

Authors Sven Gerhardt, Mira Valentin, and Andreas Steinhöfel treated the audience to an entertaining evening at the well-established annual early-summer event hosted by the MENTOR association—Die Leselernhelfer—at the Steinmühle Forum.

The three readings, which could hardly have been more different, were interspersed with musical performances—not only a treat for the ears, but also a visual treat thanks to the many singers in attendance.

On the bestseller list

Sven Gerhardt says he “almost became a teacher,” but then decided to write children’s books—and did so with great success. He has written 28 of them and made it onto the bestseller list. At the Steinmühlenforum, he took the audience on a journey to the Wahrlichwald, transporting listeners to another place in their minds for a while. That, too, can be a great way to unwind at the end of a workday!

Captivated by the lecture

Andreas Steinhöfel, a crowd favorite, multiple award-winning children’s book author, and patron of MENTOR, never fails to captivate his audience in a special way. With his work and its protagonist, “Inger,” he once again ensured that the people in the packed hall could let their minds wander for a while, while at the same time remaining captivated by Steinhöfel’s style of storytelling and by the plot, which allowed the audience to identify deeply with the characters.

Great Fantasies

Mira Valentin transported the audience to another world for the duration of her reading. “Melek vs. the Jinn” was the theme of her evening, and the literary journey was brimming with fantasies, dreams, and discoveries. The setting for the story, however, was “the forest near Buchenau”—that is, the Marburg countryside, where all three authors call home.

Musical Variety with WirSing

Several performances by the WirSing choir, conducted by tenor and Steinmühlen music teacher Daniel Sans, added an extra touch of musical flair to the evening. It was clear to everyone that they were having a lot of fun, as was evident in Daniel Sans’s professional piano playing.

One-quarter of the population cannot read

Listening to all these performances, one almost forgot the actually not-so-joyful reason behind this lovely evening. Time and again, it’s hard to imagine that 25 percent of fourth-graders have little or no reading skills by the end of elementary school. – It’s therefore obvious why MENTOR has made it its mission to improve children’s reading skills with the help of volunteers. Parts of Marburg’s business community are also committed to this cause, and their representatives were also in the audience.

An Important Social Issue

MENTOR Chairwoman Inge Maisch and board members Irmgard König, Dr. Michaele Künzel, and Gisela Falk thanked everyone who advocates for this cause—regardless of their role. This also applied to the host, Björn Gemmer, principal of Steinmühle School, who sees a close connection between the association’s self-imposed mission and the concerns of Steinmühle School. Collaboration is therefore fruitful, as an event like this consistently brings an important social issue to the forefront. Information about reading skills deficits must be brought to light! Only then can solutions be developed to address the problem.

A Partnership in Action: First Two Students, Then Moshi’s Mayor at the Steinmühle

Collaborations & Partnerships, News, Social Engagement

A Journey into Another World: To get to know their partner school in Germany, Fahad Mohamed Mukhandi (18) and Joseph Richard Saitoti (17) from One World Secondary School Kilimanjaro in Tanzania spent two months at Steinmühle. At the end of their stay, they accepted an invitation to Marburg City Hall to meet with Mayor Dr. Thomas Spies. The Tanzanian students’ visit was preceded by a trip to Tanzania by a group from Steinmühle earlier this year, which we reported on in the March edition of this chronicle. The partnership between people from two continents culminated in the visit to Marburg by the mayor of Moshi, Tanzania, and his delegation.

An impressive title

“Honorable Mayor of the City of Moshi, Zuberi Abdallah Kidumo —‘a fine title,’ remarked the mayor of Marburg, admiring the title of his counterpart from Moshi, whose visit had already been announced when the two young men from Tanzania, accompanied by Steinmühlen School Principal Björn Gemmer and a group of students, arrived at Marburg City Hall. Fahad and Joseph spoke with Marburg’s mayor about the partnership between Moshi and Marburg, which has been in place for a year and a half, as well as other topics.

Break down prejudices or prevent them from arising in the first place

“Engaging in dialogue with people from other countries broadens one’s horizons and helps break down prejudices—or prevent them from arising in the first place,” said Marburg Mayor Dr. Thomas Spies during the reception in the City Council chamber. “I am delighted to see how our partnership with Moshi is being brought to life by our students and how the younger generations are also connecting with one another.”
Moshi, Marburg’s sister city, is also connected to Marburg on another level. There is a hospital partnership between the two cities, coordinated by Dr. Christian Kreisel. He is also a board member of the Freundeskreis Marburg-Moshi e.V.

Financing was a challenge

Fahad Mohamed Mukhandi and Joseph Richard Saitoti speak English and a little German. Financing their stay in Marburg was not easy.
Michael Müller, an employee of the City of Marburg, was particularly committed to overcoming these challenges. Ultimately, they succeeded in securing funding for travel expenses, in part through the City of Marburg’s sister city program. The Rotary Club of Marburg and the Steinmühle School Association also pitched in. This is because the parents of the Tanzanian students do not have the money to finance such an exchange. The average gross monthly income in Tanzania is just over 90 euros.

“I liked schnitzel and the Allianz Arena”

During their stay in Marburg, Fahad and Joseph were hosted, one after the other, by the families of six students who had previously visited Tanzania. The host families provided room and board. They also organized and paid for an exciting leisure program that included trips to various places in Germany, including Munich. Fahad and Joseph were particularly impressed by the architectural style of the houses and the food. “I liked schnitzel. And the Allianz Arena in Munich.”
They all agreed: “We really enjoyed our stay here and would love to come back.”
A farewell party attended by Principal Björn Gemmer and the host families marked the end of the stay for the two young men from Tanzania, who once again warmly praised the friendliness of the people in Germany and bid farewell with a heartfelt speech.

The Steinmühle would like to thank once again everyone who helped make this exchange a success.

The mayor of Moshi arrived with a delegation

Accompanied by two female staff members, he arrived at the Steinmühle: the head of the Tanzanian city of Moshi, who bears the impressive title of Honorable Mayor of the City of Moshi, Zuberi Abdallah Kidumo. He is the mayor of this city of 200,000 residents, which is considered the cleanest city in Tanzania. The mayor was accompanied by Ms. Mwajuma Abasy Nasombe, Municipal Director of the City of Moshi, and Ms. Monica Charles Sana, Planning and Coordination Officer of the City of Moshi. They spoke with teachers from Steinmühle and a group of 11th-grade students about the differences in the school systems, teaching methods, and the significant differences in the atmosphere regarding the relationship between students and teachers.

Punishments and rote memorization

The biggest differences in the schooling of young people between Tanzania and Germany can be summed up quickly: Punishments and beatings are the most severe measures in everyday school life in Tanzania and, unfortunately, are commonplace, whereas here, in more serious cases, a serious conversation with the principal usually suffices. Questioning the curriculum is not encouraged in Tanzania. The focus is on strict memorization, not on discussing the material. There isn’t always a genuine interest in the subject matter: students study to avoid punishment. Opportunities for learning are often limited. It’s not uncommon to have just two books for 80 students.

In addition to the differences in school curriculum, there are other distinctions between Tanzania and Germany: “The biggest difference is the weather,” the Tanzanian students Fahad and Joseph had already remarked with a smile. When it comes to interacting with the older generation, we here in Germany could learn a thing or two from Tanzanian customs: Older people are treated with explicit respect there. Greeting one another upon meeting is the norm.

“Here and Now” is almost over: Theater Club for Grades 5 & 6

Art, Music & Theater, News

The story revolves around a treacherous murder, and the victim is none other than “Taylor Swift,” poisoned by a hired killer commissioned by her own assistant. The star collapses dead on stage. And the chief physicians who rush to her side talk and do a lot, yet are able to do very little. It takes the courage of two young detectives—complete with a cell phone—and the experience of a Sherlock Holmes and his—in this case—two Watsons to uncover the culprits, who, in the hotel and spa setting, already believe they’ve achieved their goals. And magical creatures are needed, too—as well as journeys to distant times when wild members of the same species were still being eaten.

A wonderful little play was performed twice on Thursday, May 22, by 15 young actresses who gave spirited performances. Hats off to them!

Diving into Real Life Through the 8th-Grade Social Internship

News, Politics, Business & Responsibility, Social Engagement

Out of the school environment and into the real world: Through the Steinmühle social internship program, 8th-grade students regularly gain insights into various fields. The students always come away with a wealth of experience from their work at the internship sites of their choice, reports subject teacher Dr. Claudia Röder.

Insight into the Asylum Granting Process

Fabian Preis visited the Marburg District Job Center. There, he gained insight into initial interviews during which people in need apply for financial assistance, and he attended on-site visits where decisions were made regarding the granting of benefits in kind. Fabian also received an overview of the asylum process and the “Team for you” program. There, discussions take place about new opportunities, such as vocational training, job application coaching, and language courses. The student also gained insight into the placement of foster families and established contact with the Family Council, which determines what support families receive.

At the meeting place for war veterans

Toby Miller was drawn to the other side of the globe for a social internship. He was in Adelaide, Australia, at Willo’s Men’s Shed, a gathering place for war veterans. The program, which is government-funded, aims to support men’s mental health. Older men gather here to combat loneliness and find a sense of purpose.
Upon request, the group undertakes woodworking and blacksmithing projects, which are then donated to places like kindergartens—for example, climbing frames and treehouses—and occasionally music projects as well. Participation is voluntary. Sometimes it’s just a place to eat, drink, and talk.
Toby would love to see something like this in Germany, too, so that older people have a place to go.

Help Through the “Medium of the Horse”

Jana Nolte attended a therapeutic riding session at the St. Elisabeth Association. There, people with disabilities receive support through the use of horses.
The disabilities can vary widely, e.g., eating disorders, behavioral disorders, ADHD.
The horse acts as a “mirror” for the body. It helps the children relax because they feel free. Horses build self-confidence, self-esteem, and teamwork skills. Jana noticed that many children arrived looking sad, but all of them dismounted the horse looking happy.
Jana reflected that her social skills have improved. She has learned that she needs to reach out to children in order to help them.

More peace and serenity in the forest

Anni Deucker completed her social internship at the Stadtwald preschool. There are many children from diverse backgrounds there, and it’s a very multicultural environment.
They played lots of language games and sang a lot to help strengthen the children’s language skills.
The days consisted of breakfast together, morning circle, library visits, gym class, arts and crafts, and baking.
There were also forest projects, and during these, it was clear that the children were much calmer and more balanced and argued less.
During her internship, Anni learned patience.

Residents of Hohenlohe presented the Steinmühle with the MINTSPACE School Award

Contests & Awards, News, STEM

Here at Steinmühle, we’re incredibly proud of our many, many awards—and yesterday we added yet another one to the list: As part of an event organized by Hohenloher, experts in learning spaces for tomorrow’s STEM education, we received the MINTSPACE School Award from the regional chapter of Jugend forscht during the “School of the Future—Pedagogy Meets Space” event.

The award, sponsored by the Hohenloher Academy, is presented to an innovative school by an independent “Jugend forscht” jury at each regional “Jugend forscht” competition. Dr. Dr. Dierk Suhr, Head of Education and the Hohenloher Academy, together with his colleague Guido Jäger, presented the award to Björn Gemmer, principal of Steinmühlen School.

The Impact of Interior Design on Learning

What role does interior design play in learning? How do pedagogy and architecture interact? These and other questions were answered at the event at the Steinmühle by experts who had traveled there or who work at the Steinmühle anyway.

On Educational Architecture

Principal Björn Gemmer outlined the child-centered educational vision, while Malte Klimczak, Tobias Karlein, and Björn Wagner from Steinmühle’s digitalization team explained the hardware, platforms, and instructional concepts for fostering a culture of digital literacy.

Katja Wagner-Grebe of Oesterle Architekten presented educational architecture and spatial concepts.

Dr. Dr. Dierk Suhr, a scholar of the natural and human sciences, spoke about “Space as the Third Educator.”

“A Successful School of the Future”

Afterward, during a guided tour that included a visit to the Steinmühle Bilingual Elementary School, the participants were able to see for themselves how these individual components fit together harmoniously at Steinmühle—“…and truly form a successful ‘school of the future,’ ” Suhr praised.
