Young gang members wow the audience at the Erwin-Piscator-Haus

Archive, News

“Tom Herfert, Talea Funk, Fynn Konnertz, Samuel Ruff, and Marit Winterstein were the extra splash of lemon in the band’s cocktail, making the music sound just a little fresher.” That’s how the Oberhessische Presse raved after the magnificent performance by the musicians of the Steinmühle Jazz Ensemble. In front of nearly 400 listeners in the packed small hall of the Erwin-Piscator-Haus, the five musicians seamlessly blended into the high musical standard and quickly dispelled any sense of awe in the presence of such great musicians as Lisa Pollard and Joe Wulf of the Gentlemen of Swing. Whether it was Tom’s rousing saxophone playing alongside “Sax Lady” Lisa Pollard, Talea’s soulful vocals, Fynn’s expressive blues guitar solos, Samuel’s spontaneous trombone battle with Joe Wulf, or Marit’s precise euphonium playing—the joy of performing among our students and the audience’s great enthusiasm were palpable throughout the evening.

For an entire week, the musicians of the N.N. Swinging Wodka Lemmon Gang rehearsed for this concert together with our JazzEnsemble after classes in the large music hall at the Steinmühle. Lisa Pollard’s intensive coaching paid off, and the result was clearly evident on Saturday: The JazzEnsemble kicked things off together with the N.N. Swinging Wodka Lemmon Gang; after the intermission, Joe Wulf and the Gentlemen of Swing showcased their musicality and exceptional skill; and the evening concluded with a grand finale featuring all the musicians. A highlight was the spontaneously arranged final piece, during which 91-year-old drummer Arno Funk demonstrated his skill on the bongos. The evening concluded with a standing ovation for all the musicians.

An unforgettable evening that leaves you looking forward to more performances by these musicians.

“Jugend Forscht” School Award Presented in Braunschweig

Thanks to the commitment of the school, the parent-teacher association, and donations from Roche, Steinmühle has had a student laboratory since the spring of 2015. There, interest-driven projects are possible starting in 5th grade. This year, Steinmühle reaped the rewards of this initiative and won the 2018 “Jugend Forscht” school award for the Central Hesse region.

Marvin Preis, Joel Rucker, and Mats Böhmer—currently sixth-graders—proved to be particularly clever, quick, and hardworking during experiments and lab work. The boys, who are interested in the natural sciences, demonstrated the patience required for research work—repeating experiments—and showed consistency in doing so—not exactly typical for students of this age. This led to the three students being entered in the “Jugend forscht – Schüler experimentieren” competition. Most of the competition participants are 14 years old or older.

This was only the second time Steinmühle had participated in this competition. Most of the schools in the competition are already seasoned veterans thanks to their many years of participation, while Steinmühle was still venturing into uncharted territory. Together with their teachers, the students developed ideas for topics they could explore in depth for the competition. With great enthusiasm and initiative, the trio—who were still fifth graders last school year—tinkered with their topic: “Help—Acid in Juices. Titration of Juices.”

For 15–20 minutes, the expert jury asked the three boys various questions, delving deeply into the subject matter. In their answers, the trio demonstrated expertise and dedication, making it clear just how thoroughly they had studied the topic.

In the end, the jury praised the exceptionally high standard of work demonstrated by the Steinmühle students, despite their young age. It decided to award the school prize in part because all other Steinmühle participants from grades 7 and 11 also performed very well. Steinmühle took second place in biology in the “Jugend forscht” competition, first place in the “Schüler experimentieren” competition in chemistry, and second place in chemistry as well. The latter prize went to the three youngest Steinmühle participants.

The participating teachers, Dr. Jutta Töhl-Borsdorf (chemistry) and Dr. Dietmar von der Ahe (biology), are delighted by such a high level of student engagement in the natural sciences and the time the students have invested —especially given that many Steinmühlen students are actively involved in the school’s cultural programs. According to the teachers, the competition has further strengthened the sense of community between students and teachers—a positive side effect that extends across disciplines. “You build a closer relationship with the students and share in the excitement of the competition together with them. Teachers and students are a team. That’s really something special,” said chemistry teacher Dr. Jutta Töhl-Borsdorf, describing the process from her perspective.

The subject teachers want to further encourage student engagement in chemistry and biology. Winning the school award provided further motivation to do so. Students can continue their research with enthusiasm: A lab for open research for grades 7–13 is open at the Steinmühle every Friday starting at 1:15 p.m.

The 2018 “Jugend Forscht” school prize for the Central Hesse region, worth 1,000 euros and awarded in Braunschweig, went to Steinmühle. Principals Björn Gemmer and Bernd Holly (back row, from left) and the subject teachers (Dr. Jutta Töhl-Borsdorf and Dr. Dietmar von der Ahe, front row) are proud of their students’ achievements.

Ready for the Future: Steinmühle Connects to the High-Speed Network

Archive, News

Steinmühle has connected to the high-speed network. In cooperation with Marburg’s municipal utilities, the school and boarding school have been equipped with a state-of-the-art, high-performance fiber-optic connection. “This step ensures that we are well-prepared for the future in terms of digital learning and educational opportunities for decades to come,” say the managing director and school administration.

“We approached the municipal utility company and were able to implement our plan quickly,” reported Dirk Konnertz, executive director of the school association, during a press conference at which the project was presented to the public. He praised the utility company’s adherence to deadlines throughout all stages of the project and the generally good cooperation. The boarding school and the school carried out this important project on a cost-sharing basis. Together, they invested approximately 30,000 euros in the project.
According to Managing Director Norbert Schüren, the municipal utility company did its utmost to accommodate Steinmühle during the work by incorporating existing lines and connections in the area into the planning without bureaucratic hurdles and making use of them. The Steinmühle benefited from the boarding school’s forward-thinking planning; thanks to its IT manager, Till Buurman, a fiber-optic connection had already been installed on the premises 15 years ago. “Now we were able to take advantage of this and, in a positive sense, check this important item off our list,” says boarding school managing director Georg Ritter with satisfaction.
For the Steinmühle school administration as well, an important chapter has been successfully concluded. “When it comes to modern media, we may have a slightly different approach than other high schools,” explained Principal Björn Gemmer. The goal is to ensure that students leave Steinmühle with a comprehensive understanding of the internet and related technologies: “These skills shouldn’t have to be learned only after starting college, vocational training, or a career.” The principal mentioned that 7th-grade students will be equipped with tablets next year, “…and more will follow. We definitely needed more data capacity than we had available.”

“We couldn’t wait any longer”

Following the upgrade, the Steinmühle now has an internet connection with a speed of 500 megabits per second. Thanks to the fiber-optic connection, increasing the speed to meet future needs is no problem. If necessary, speeds of 1 Gbit/s or even 10 Gbit/s can be provided. According to Stadtwerke CEO Schüren, these are guaranteed connection speeds. Waiting until policymakers were ready to create these conditions was not an option, added school principals Björn Gemmer and Bernd Holly. Unfortunately, they noted, Germany is a relatively slow-moving country in this regard.

Teacher training on the topic of

Meanwhile, Steinmühle isn’t resting on its laurels. Next on the agenda is an in-school teacher training session in November. In cooperation with Philipps University, a training program was launched in collaboration with University Vice President Prof. Evelyn Korn and the Center for Teacher Education. The Steinmühle concept includes a comprehensive yet critical approach to the use of devices and media. The school aims to fully live up to this self-imposed standard.
Dirk Konnertz, Executive Director of the school association, believes the goals of the Steinmühle leadership team have been fully realized: “If we make even more extensive use of the internet in the classroom in the future, the necessary conditions for doing so will be in place in every respect.”
————————-

Norbert Schüren, head of Stadtwerke (4th from the right), praised Steinmühle’s initiative and its pioneering role in the area of network speed. From right: Björn Gemmer (principal), Georg Ritter (boarding school director), Johanna Buurman-Rogalla (boarding school director), Norbert Schüren (CEO of Stadtwerke Marburg), Dirk Konnertz (Managing Director of the School Association), Lars Witter (Project Coordinator at Hifreak), Bernd Holly (Principal), and Markus Scholz (Project Manager at Stadtwerke Marburg).

Field trips organized by the residential groups provide opportunities for their first shared experiences

Archive, News

At the start of each school year, on the first weekend after summer break, the individual house groups at Steinmühle Boarding School travel to different destinations to get to know each other better away from their everyday routines. The residential groups change slightly every year. The weekend is a great and important opportunity for each group to bond anew.

As a general rule, weekend activities are of great importance for the future: the first close friendships are formed, and the first shared experiences are had. These are moments that people look back on again and again later in life.

Stammhaus is camping at Lake Bigge

The residents of the main dorm went camping at Lake Bigge in the Sauerland region. There, they first went swimming in the lake and had a barbecue before the group later retired to their tents. On Saturday, the team drove to Plettenberg to visit the Aquamagis water park. There, they were drawn to eleven slides where speeds of up to 100 km/h could be reached. The boarding school students also tried out the free-fall slide and enjoyed endless loops.

Eco-Home Explores the Surrounding Area

For the Biohaus, a new residential group consisting entirely of new students in grades 5 through 8, the program included getting to know the city of Marburg to familiarize themselves with their new home. The girls and boys traveled to the Waldhaus on the Richtsberg—the future weekend retreat for international students—and spent an active weekend there, enjoying a walk in the woods, a trip to the movies, pedal boating, a tour of the castle, and a visit to the climbing forest to round out the weekend.

Mühle travels to Wolfsburg, the “Autostadt”

The residents of the mill headed to Wolfsburg to stay at a campground with an on-site swimming pool. On Saturday, the group visited the Autostadt in Wolfsburg, which offered not only cars but also a wide range of recreational activities. They also explored other places of interest in the city and the surrounding area.

The Westfalenhaus is moving to the Netherlands

The group with the most participants—24 students—traveled to South Holland to visit a farm with its own petting zoo. On Saturday, the itinerary included a visit to The Hague, about 40 kilometers away. Since the weather was ideal, the beach there was one of the most popular spots. The group wrapped up the weekend in the neighboring country with a barbecue, games, and a campfire. Of course, the traditional game of Werewolf in the evening was a must.

Hessenhaus Visits a Climbing Park Near Fulda

The students from the Hessenhaus moved into a vacation apartment near Fulda. On Saturday, the plan was to visit the climbing forest, try out the ten courses, and ride the 800-meter-long Europa cable car, which is one of the longest cable cars in Europe. The Hessenhaus group watched for the first signs of the Perseid meteor shower and its shower of shooting stars on the night leading into Sunday. Armed with sleeping bags and warm clothing, the girls headed out to a field where they could enjoy an unobstructed and clear view of the starry sky. The night of shooting stars required some concentration, so time literally flew by. After returning to the Steinmühle boarding school on Sunday, the group was able to relax a bit to recharge for the upcoming school week.

Congratulations to the successful graduates of Nicole Hohm’s Cambridge Business English course: The students performed exceptionally well, as they were all certified at the B2 level—a level typically expected only by the time students take their high school graduation exams. The students in the photo achieved this by the end of their eleventh-grade year. Two of them, Jana Haas and Justus Schneider, even reached C1—the language proficiency level of educated native speakers. Principal Björn Gemmer congratulated the successful group on behalf of the Steinmühlen administration team. The Cambridge exam certificates are recognized worldwide and assess writing, reading, listening, and speaking skills. Eagerly Anticipated: Arrival Day at Steinmühle Boarding School

Archive

There was an emotional atmosphere on the Steinmühlen campus on Sunday, one day before school started: new boarding students arrived with their parents; from now on, the boys and girls are part of the Steinmühlen community. A little later, the “returning students” followed. That is, those who have already spent one or more years at the boarding school. Together with the teaching staff, they all now kick off the new school year. The 2018–19 school year begins.

Even the educators are always a little nervous on a day like this, but they’re well prepared. Their kickoff meeting began as early as Saturday, after a group breakfast.

Two new educators have joined the team

We welcomed our new colleagues, Isabel Schauss and Lena Tengler. While Isabel will take over as head of the main dormitory alongside boarding school director Nils Schwandt, Lena is the new head of the Biohaus. As the boarding school expands, the Biohaus is once again becoming a regular residential group for girls and boys in the lower and middle grades. There is now also an off-campus residential group at the Waldhaus. International students move there on weekends when there is no boarding school and during the fall and Easter breaks.

During its first meeting of the school year, the team also discussed the final plans for the coming weeks. The first topics on the agenda were the house trips during the first boarding school weekend (August 10–12) as well as organizational matters: duty schedules, transportation services, extracurricular activity planning, final house and room assignments, and welcome packages for the students.

A big moment: Saying goodbye to head to a new home

“I’m Jan. And who are you?” Jan Müller from the boarding school’s study center welcomes the new boarding student. There’s a distinct atmosphere on this warm, summery Sunday. One last time, they pick up their little sibling, exchange a few farewell words at the door with the grandmother who traveled with them. Some children still look around a bit shyly, while others head straight toward the teachers with beaming smiles. Memories of the trial stay come flooding back: Yes, it had been fun and it was cool. That’s why they chose Steinmühle Boarding School. And now—now the time has come to say goodbye to their parents later, after coffee.

While parents and students enjoy cake and fruit in the dining hall, boarding school director Nils Schwandt introduces the teaching staff at the same time. Bernd Holly from the school administration team also stops by. He lets the new Steinmühlen students know that teachers and school administrators always have an open ear and an open door whenever they need to talk or have questions. Then boarding school director Anke Muszynski lines up the newcomers “by house” for the photographer. Of course, parents also pull out their cell phones to capture a photo of their children together with their new group.

“See you in two weeks,” everyone calls out at the end, since that’s when their regular trip home is scheduled. Experience shows that “in two weeks” quickly turns into “already.” The enthusiasm with which the experienced boarding students arrive on campus in the hours that follow gives a hint of this: suitcases out of the car, a quick goodbye to their parents, high-fives with the staff. “Arrival” has two meanings here.

The first meeting in the evening

The first day back is always filled with excitement and anticipation, the joy of reuniting after six weeks of summer vacation, and curiosity. A new living group is formed; some students have completed their schooling and left the boarding school, while new ones have joined.

That evening, after dinner together, the first house meeting takes place right away. Getting to know one another, house outings the coming weekend, important information about the start of the school year, house rules, and boarding school regulations are all topics on the agenda. And so ends a day that many have been eagerly looking forward to.

The total number of students at Steinmühle Boarding School has risen significantly. This school year, the boarding school is seeing its highest enrollment in years.

Students from Steinmühlen Boarding School Get a Taste of the Mountain Air in Randa, Switzerland

Archive, Uncategorized

While the graduating class is taking its oral exams, the rest of the students at Steinmühle Boarding School are enjoying a relatively relaxed time. This is especially true for those boarding school students who are currently in Randa, a village near Zermatt in the Swiss canton of Valais, 1,400 meters above sea level.

Going to the Swiss mountains as a group is a voluntary activity every year. This recreational activity is nevertheless very popular. Thirteen students took part this year and, together with a team of five teachers, spent some unforgettable days at their destination, the rustic Augustinushütte hiking lodge.

You’ll have to fend for yourself there. You’ll stay in a dormitory or in rooms for six people.

In winter, people associate the mountains with winter sports. In summer, they associate them with hiking and other activities. The group did, in fact, go on various day hikes of varying difficulty levels.

After breakfast, the hikers set out; after a few hours, they found themselves back at the starting point, cooked together, and used their shared meals as an opportunity for lively conversation. Many a day also ended with a game in the living room, before fatigue eventually set in here and there from the exertion in the unfamiliar high-altitude air.

“We want to give the group a chance to spend time together, away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and the stress of school,” the teaching team explains, outlining the goal of the field trip. The focus is on nature and hands-on experiences. The students will also have the opportunity to test their own limits during one or more of the activities. – This is an important experience that can also help them rise to the occasion in specific situations.

According to the Steinmühle Boarding School, the goal in Randa is neither to set nor to break athletic records. The focus is less on athletic performance and more on reaching the summits together.

Reaching the summits—a wonderful goal in any case. And in that respect, one might say, they do have something in common with the recent high school graduates upon their return.

The first Stone Mill Day featured music, singing, and a touch of excitement

Archive, News

With cheerful music and singing, Steinmühle welcomed the students of the new fifth-grade classes to the Forum. The sixth-grade class showed a lot of enthusiasm. A year ago, these girls and boys stood in this very spot, waiting to find out their class assignments. Today, they were the ones welcoming the new fifth graders with performances from last year’s hit musical, “Götterolympiade.”
The audience, consisting of parents and family members, showed great stamina in the completely packed hall on what was perhaps the hottest morning of the week and cheered on their own children: Would their best friend end up in the same class? The homeroom teachers—Nicole Hohm, Stephan Steinebach, and Nina Kvachko (the latter standing in for Dirk Lange)—kept everyone in suspense as they took turns drawing “their” students’ name tags. The now complete and brand-new classes 5a, 5b, and 5c first posed together as a group, then individually for the photographer.

Steinmühlen T-shirts from the Friends Association

While all the guests helped themselves to coffee, cold drinks, and cookies, the new fifth-graders at Steinmühlen made their way to their classrooms together with their homeroom teachers. – The starting gun had been fired for everyday life at the new school! The first day of school was rounded off with the presentation of Steinmühlen T-shirts by the chair of the booster club, Jasmine Weidenbach. A few students have already been spotted wearing their new shirts…
The event, organized by Frank Wemme in his capacity as educational director, was opened by the school principals, Björn Gemmer and Bernd Holly. They had deliberately avoided long speeches to test the new students’ patience as little as possible, given the warm temperatures and the already exciting nature of the day. Ulrike Wilmsmeyer, Daniel Sans, and Frank Wemme were responsible for creating the perfect musical atmosphere, both in an organizational capacity and as performers. As members of the musical theater band and the StoneMill house band, respectively, they inspired the students—Nela Haeberle, Tom Herfert, Fynn Konnertz, Janne Schweitzer, and Flûte Seifart. — A wonderful testament to the fact that music is part of the culture at Steinmühle right from the start.

Beate Schridde, riding instructor and trainer at Steinmühlen: Her passion for horses began at birth

Archive, News

That intense passion may eventually fade. Most parents of teenage girls sense this coming when their daughters don’t want to leave the riding stable at all. Knowing full well that interests can change over time, they still encourage their young riders.

Beate Schridde, riding instructor and trainer at the Steinmühle Riding School, was born into the world of horses. No one needed to inspire her—her passion for horses had already been alive and well on the Schridde family farm seven years before she was born. Schridde Leistungszucht—a name synonymous with show jumping!

Beate Schridde’s childhood home was located on the estate in Vöhrum, Lower Saxony, between Braunschweig and Hanover. She used to wake up in the morning to the sound of horses neighing and the smell of the stables.

If there’s anyone who has equestrian sports in her blood, it’s Beate Schridde. Having later trained as a horse manager and riding instructor with an A-level coaching license, she didn’t just make it her mission to pass on her passion for equestrian sports. She also developed her own enthusiasm and qualified to compete in dressage, cross-country, and show jumping—both nationally and internationally. In show jumping, she even competed up to the S-class, the highest level. To this day, her heart still beats for the show jumping course.

Anyone who knows exactly what a good horse must offer and be capable of, and who knows from personal experience what a rider’s role should entail, is in high demand as a riding instructor and trainer. Beate Schridde has been associated with Steinmühle, where she works today, for over 15 years. The up-and-coming rider Nicola Pohl, based at Hofgut Dagobertshausen, also learned to ride here. Beate Schridde played a pivotal role in the young rider’s equestrian career for several crucial years as a salaried riding instructor and FN-certified trainer for the Pohl family. Today, Nicola Pohl successfully competes in world-renowned tournaments.

Beate Schridde wouldn’t be Beate Schridde if she lacked the ambition to prepare not only riders but also horses to perform at their best in the dressage arena, on the show jumping course, or even on cross-country trails. While her brother Claus successfully continues the Schridde family’s performance breeding program in northern Germany—with six show-jumping-oriented foals expected in 2019 alone—Beate Schridde devotes herself to training and riding young horses alongside her regular work. She also offers additional services such as presenting horses at mare performance tests and preparing them for stallion licensing. Training courses for beginners, those returning to the sport, or ambitious competition riders are also part of her repertoire.

You can almost sense that behind all these activities, even before a regular workday begins, lies a deep passion. The joy she finds in what she does puts into perspective the time and physical effort invested by this dedicated 49-year-old, who handles maneuvering the horse trailer and trailer with such ease that it looks as if they were wheelbarrows. “It has to be that way,” she remarks casually, “after all, there’s valuable cargo in there.”

That’s right.
