Steinmühle Boarding School: Many Hands Made the Fall Festival a Success

Archive, News

Just in time for Steinmühle’s traditional fall festival, the scaffolding had been removed from the main building, and the historic half-timbered structure shone in new splendor—renovated inside and out! The event held at the end of every September is not only a crowd-pleaser for the Steinmühle boarding school, but also always a day full of challenges—for students and teachers alike.

The school grounds were filling up rapidly on Saturday afternoon, even before the official kickoff at 3 p.m. Parents, relatives, and friends of Steinmühle gathered in the schoolyard, inside the buildings, and at the boarding school’s sports facilities to learn more and marvel at the activities the students had put together this time.

Boarding school students baked 55 cakes

Of course, food plays a special role at a celebration like the Fall Festival. The boarding school students have always been in charge here: preparations begin as early as the Friday before. There’s a flurry of activity in the dorm kitchens, and the aroma of fresh cake fills the living quarters. A total of 55 cakes, baked by the boarding students, end up on the sales counter set up between the main building and the administration building.

In no time at all, all the treats were sold out on Saturday, and the more than 2,500 visitors flocked to the barbecue stand, the beer tent, and the wine tent. The boarding school students also worked and served at these stations, with occasional help from volunteers. Everything tasted great, which explained the large crowds of people who weren’t deterred by the overcast weather or the rain that came later.

A celebration for alumni, too

The Steinmühle Fall Festival is always a celebration for alumni as well. Some of them travel from far away to spend a pleasant time at the place where they went to school, enjoying each other’s company and reminiscing. A “10-Year High School Graduation Reunion” took place in the tea room. But there were also visitors who had graduated from the “Mühle” long, long before that.

An atmospheric celebration with drinks at dusk that lasted until 1 a.m. left its usual marks the next morning. Here, too, boarding school students step in on Sunday at 10 a.m. sharp to clean up, return the dishes, and take down the decorations. With the support of the teaching staff, the grounds are tidied up as if nothing had happened. After all, classes begin promptly at ten past eight the next day for everyone.

Building permit for the school building renovation is all set!

Archive, News

Now, as our new building nears completion, the extensive renovation and expansion work on the school’s main building can begin. To the delight of principals Björn Gemmer and Bernd Holly and Managing Director Dirk Konnertz, construction manager Jochen Schröder delivered the official building permit. Demolition work on the entrance area, including the school office, will begin as early as the fall break. This view will soon be a thing of the past.

Gold for Team 3: Steinmühlen Soccer Tournament with a New Format

Archive, News

This year’s Steinmühle Soccer Tournament was held for the first time under a new format at the Steinmühle outdoor sports facilities. School sports coordinator Michael Neirich reports:

The six participating teams from the day school (grades 8–12/teachers) and the boarding school were once again selected by lottery before the tournament began this year. The student council and the boarding school supported the players by providing drinks, fruit, and energy bars.

A new feature this year was that teams could earn points not only in the 4-on-4 small-field game but also in a penalty shootout. The games were marked by a spirited and fair atmosphere and often featured impressive technical skill. As a result, spectators were treated to many beautifully crafted goals and some impressive technical feats.

In the combined results of both competitions, Team 3 ultimately emerged as the clear tournament champion with a six-point lead and celebrated winning the gold medal.

The result:

1st Place: Team 3 ( Olaf Schubert, Veit Gemmer, Paul Wolf, Sam Kempkes, Jamal, Louis Kirschstein)

2nd Place: Team 6 ( Micha Killian, Linus Ingenbleek, Jakob Reinhard, Dejan Boguslawski, Michel Hermens, Jannik Anfang)

3rd Place: Team 1 ( Frank Wemme, Maxi Lotz, Nils Blessing, Johannes Korn, Bijan Teymoortash)

Sustainability Day: Steinmühle Takes a Stand Against the Throwaway Culture

Archive, News

Steinmühle participated in the 5th Hessian Sustainability Day with two projects.

Led by Friedhelm Wagler, the first group set out to determine how much packaging waste is generated when shopping at various grocery stores in Marburg. They investigated this question by baking two different cakes based on two cake recipes. Afterward, they calculated the waste balance for each individual store.

The second group built a raft on “Sustainability Day.” They used returnable bottles as floats, which they screwed under screen-printing plates so they could then view the banks of the Lahn from the water. As part of the “Engagement” project, the students plan to become “plastic pirates” on the water, searching for washed-up and discarded trash and finding new uses for it wherever possible.

Students from class 10b—namely Talea Funk, Paul Kappeler, Sebastian Koch, Shawn Li, Nils Merte, Sandro Pfuhl, Max Rosenkranz, Chiara Weber, and Philipp Zoremba—took an active part in carrying out the raft project.

The raft project was led by Ines Vielhaben and Carmen Bastian, with active support from Christian Schäfer, a counselor at the Steinmühle boarding school.

Steinmühlen Soccer Team Finishes as Runner-Up Twice in “Youth Training for the Olympics”

Archive, News

Over the past five years, the Steinmühlen soccer teams in Competition Class II of the “Youth Trains for the Olympics” program have advanced at least to the regional round—but this year, the journey ended at the city level for the players born in 2003 and 2004. Unfortunately, three key players were absent due to injuries and a stay abroad, though this should in no way detract from the strong performance of the Martin Luther School team, led by their outstanding player Linus Gsöllpointner. The team won all four games in a very strong and evenly matched field, thereby clearly qualifying for the district finals.

Taking both tournaments together, Steinmühle was the strongest of all the Marburg schools overall, as it also took second place in Competition Class III (born in 2005 and 2006) among the five Marburg schools. It wasn’t until the final, decisive match that the Elisabethschule prevailed, defeating Steinmühle 2–0. Up until that matchup, neither team had conceded a goal.

All the coaches agreed that this year’s two tournaments were of a very high standard. Despite the sweltering heat, the players on the Steinmühlen teams showed great enthusiasm, team spirit, and tremendous fighting spirit—and we can be very proud of our two second-place finishes!

Hiking with Alpacas – A Special Event

Archive

During the boarding school weekend, eight female students from Steinmühle Boarding School set out on an alpaca hike. In Sterzhausen, near Marburg, there is an alpaca farm that now has 27 animals; seven foals were born there this year alone, the youngest just a week ago.

Upon arrival at the stable, the dedicated breeders first gave us an introductory briefing to help us learn how to assess the animals and familiarize ourselves with the surroundings. Alpacas are flight animals, so we were told to approach them cautiously and not to be too frantic or too loud.

Conveying a sense of calm and balance

After learning how to care for an animal, each student was assigned an “animal companion” to take for a walk. Step by step, the girls befriended the four-legged friends, who are generally very peaceful and calm. After about 30 minutes, they took a break to graze. Then they continued along the country roads of the Lahn Valley. People and animals became more and more one; the animals’ calmness and serenity rubbed off on the girls.

Finally, the group returned to the barn and the other animals. The girls were particularly taken with the young animals. The alpacas had become increasingly trusting, so by the end, there was plenty of cuddling and petting. It was hard to say goodbye to their four-legged companions. The participants captured the outing and its highlights in photos—a very special weekend activity that will be remembered for a long time to come.

The alpaca, with its soft, thick coat, is a source of wool and is native to the Andes. Today, most alpacas are raised in Australia and New Zealand. That is also where some of Sterzhäuser’s alpacas come from.

Steinmühle Boarding School: New Furniture in the Westfalenhaus Boosts the Sense of Well-Being

Archive

The Steinmühle Boarding School uses the school vacation period for renovations and refurbishments—especially in the summer. That’s when major projects are tackled that aren’t possible during “day-to-day operations”—for example, replacing furniture. Currently, all rooms in the Westfalenhaus are being furnished with new furniture.

After the main building was refurbished during the Easter break, it was now the Westfalenhaus’s turn. The contractors worked around the clock to complete the refurnishing. At the same time, they had to carry out all the usual maintenance work done during the summer break. A total of 26 beds, closets, dressers, desks, and shelves were replaced. Bright, cheerful, mostly white furniture took the place of the old pieces.

Feedback from the student body was positive almost immediately. The residents quickly noticed an increase in their sense of well-being at the boarding school. The furniture is now more modern and tailored to their needs.

The students had been directly involved in the decision-making process regarding the new furnishings. A model room had also been set up in the Westfalenhaus itself for the other buildings. This allowed all residents to take a close look and determine what they liked and what seemed useful.

The next renovation and refurbishment projects at the Steinmühle boarding school have already been scheduled: Next up are the renovation of the administration building’s half-timbered structure, the refurnishing of the Hessenhaus during the fall break, and the mill during the Christmas break.

The Forest House as a New Weekend Home

Archive

Enrollment at the Steinmühle boarding school has risen significantly. As a result, a regular residential group has been established in the Biohaus, which had previously been used as a weekend cottage.

A solution had to be found for the international students: While German students travel home to their families every 14 days and during school breaks, their international classmates remain in Marburg. But they, too, should be able to enjoy a change of scenery and some free time where they are staying.

To meet this self-imposed standard, the Steinmühle Boarding School decided to rent the Waldhaus, located in the Richtsberg district of Marburg, just a few minutes’ drive from the boarding school. This allows students to continue using the recreational facilities on the boarding school grounds, such as the gym, riding stables, and tennis courts. To facilitate additional on-site activities right at the Waldhaus, a ping-pong table was among the first purchases made. A large garden and the proximity to the edge of the forest give the Waldhaus grounds the feel of a vacation setting.

A Step Toward Self-Employment

At the Waldhaus, the international students prepare their own meals with the support of the teachers. They plan their meals and cook them together. At the start of each weekend, everyone goes shopping together. They usually cook traditional Chinese dishes.

A stay at the Waldhaus can be seen as a step toward independence for the young people. The students who live there on the weekends are 16 years old or older.

Effective September 1, Luisa Völker, who previously served as an assistant in the weekend residential group for international students, has taken over as house director. The previous residence director, Timo Keisers, has left the team after two years to pursue a new career path. Luisa Völker already has extensive experience in working with children and youth groups; she has been an assistant for one year, is familiar with the existing structures, and is looking forward to the challenge.

Our photos show some of the international students during their stay at the Waldhaus, and also capture the preparations for Zhirui Tian’s birthday dinner.

Lena Tengler joins the teaching staff at Steinmühle Boarding School

Archive, News

Lena Tengler is a new addition to the teaching staff at Steinmühle Boarding School. The 29-year-old, who hails from the town of Linsengericht in southern Hesse—a place with a melodious name—already brings a wealth of experience to the table. After studying social work and community and religious education in Kassel, she worked for three years in Berlin in youth services, caring for young people struggling with substance abuse. She then spent two years working in addiction counseling in a suburb of Frankfurt am Main. It was an extremely challenging job that demanded her full commitment.

She now wants to devote her energy to Steinmühle Boarding School. There, she serves as house director of the Biohaus, which is home exclusively to new students aged 11 to 16. “I’m looking forward to working with young people, whom I hope to guide and support as they transition into adulthood and navigate their academic careers,” says the Steinmühle educator.
