Friends of the School Association Dinner Show: A Unique Evening Delights 70 Guests

Archive, News

For the first time in the history of the Steinmühle, the Friends of the Steinmühle had invited guests to a dinner show at the school’s Forum. Seventy guests attended, enjoyed a wonderful evening, and supported the school through their donations to help finance the interior design of the new building.

Principal Bernd Holly had worked with the students to make all the logistical arrangements and prepare the hall and the program. Jasmine Weidenbach, chair of the Friends of the School Association; the association’s board members; and teacher Fido Wagler, along with the students from the WU “Partyservice” group, had set the tables and decorated them festively, and their attentive service helped create a warm and welcoming atmosphere.

After a welcome glass of sparkling wine, an entertaining film produced by Ines Vielhaben’s “Film” elective class explained the background and current progress of the new building, which is scheduled to be occupied at the end of January 2019. Daniel Sans welcomed the guests and, with equal parts professionalism and charisma, hosted an evening filled with top-notch musical performances.

Performing on stage for the Steinmühle were:

Bodam Lee (violin) and Nelly Endres (piano). Marie-Gabrielle Sans (piano) and Daniel Sans (tenor). The fantastic band: Fynn Konnertz (electric guitar), Dirk Konnertz (keyboard), Rainer Herbel (drums), and Talea Funk (vocals).

Mario Stingl (Home Cooking Agency) and his team treated the guests to a wonderful and varied buffet.

The absolute musical highlight of the evening was the joint encore performed by all the musicians. “You Raise Me Up” (made famous by Josh Groban and Westlife), sung by Daniel Sans and accompanied by all the musicians performing that evening, gave the audience goosebumps and drew thunderous applause from the enthusiastic crowd.

The Musical Program, Part I

  1. Wolfgang A. Mozart – Piano Sonata in G Major, Movement No. 2: Andante
  2. Isang Yun – Li-Na in the Garden, 5th Movement “The Little Bird” for Solo Violin
  3. Hans May – “Today Is the Most Beautiful Day of My Life” for tenor and piano
  4. Panic! at the Disco – New Perspective

Part II

  1. Frédéric Chopin – Nocturne, Op. 9, No. 2, for piano
  2. Edward Elgar – “Salut d’Amour” for Violin and Piano

WK III Basketball: Players Look Back on the Tournament with Pride

Archive, News

In Basketball Competition III, our younger team was eager to prove itself. The strong performances by the older students last year and this year in Competition II inspired the younger students to participate in the competition as well. Our opponents for the first two games were the Waldorf School in Marburg and Gymnasium Philippinum II. We needed at least one win to advance from the group stage. The first game against the Waldorf School was close at the start, but unfortunately, their team pulled ahead of us. It was clear that the team hadn’t quite gelled yet and was struggling with coordination issues. We lost our first game 15–30. After this minor setback and a brief analysis of the problems, everything was on the line against the Philippinum’s second team. The team got off to a much better start and was able to bring some calm to the game. The teams were neck and neck, but in the end we managed to prevail with a score of 20–17. Since we finished second in the group stage, we had to face the group winner from the other group. At the start, we tried to make the most of our chance against the Philippinum’s first team. However, it quickly became clear that we should save our energy for the match to determine 3rd or 4th place. We lost 18–39. However, there was no sign of low spirits or sadness at that point. We were excited to face the Waldorf School again in our final match. Refreshed and motivated not to give up so easily, we started our last game. The Waldorf School pulled ahead, and it seemed as though the result from the first game would repeat itself. But tenacious effort and unwavering determination ensured that we kept closing the gap in the second half. At the end of regulation time, both teams had 29 points. We agreed to a 4-minute overtime period. The atmosphere was electric, the players were fully focused, and the rest of the gym was watching the game intently. Despite our strong determination and hard-working players, we were unable to defeat the Waldorf School in overtime. We lost again and finished the tournament in 4th place. Nevertheless, we look back on the competition with pride and great joy. We’d like to thank Felix Busch and Elias Haas for their willingness to step in at the last minute and support the team. We wouldn’t have been able to field a team without them, and as solid backups on the bench, they always performed their roles very well during substitutions. Bennet Bredendiek was our workhorse on the court and did a great job with a lot of dedication and willingness to run. Xaver Teres Loytved and Eren Pektas delivered very solid performances, served as reliable passing options, and demonstrated once again that basketball is their sport. Leo Tzschentke, who plays for BC Marburg, also gave it his all and pushed himself to his limits. Last but not least, Anton Schneider deserves mention as the team’s playmaker and leader. With his skill, he supported his teammates even during practice and consistently made productive contributions. A great deal of responsibility rested on Anton’s shoulders during the games. Not even a sore knee in the final game was enough to break the young player’s strong will.

JtfO Basketball: Steinmühlen Boys Look Back on a Positive Season

Archive, News

The Steinmühlen team began training for the competition with 11 players and was highly motivated to defend last year’s “title” and advance to the next round. Marc Bepperling from the coaching staff reports:

Unfortunately, Luca Hartmann and Veit Gemmer were injured during the preparation phase; we would like to take this opportunity to wish them a speedy recovery. Since some of last year’s veterans have exceeded the age limit, we had to rebuild our team.

Only Jonas Neirich, Samuel Ruff, and Sebastian Jung were allowed to compete in Competition II one last time. A big thank you to Linus Ingenbleek as assistant coach, and also to Gordian Bachmann for his always welcome presence.

On Wednesday, our boys had to hold their own against the Elisabethschule and the Gymnasium Philippinum at the 2018 JtfO basketball tournament. Buoyed by last year’s success and a strong will to win, we got off to a good start in the tournament and defeated the Elisabethschule 30–11. It was a good, exciting, and above all, fair game.

In the second game against Gymnasium Philippinum, our team fell behind early on, but we nearly managed to tie the score. Unfortunately, we were unable to capitalize on that momentum, and Gymnasium Philippinum continued to extend its lead. In the end, we lost 13–28. It was very clear that the team was still developing on the court and hadn’t quite gelled yet.

For many, it was their first competition of this kind in basketball. Nevertheless, we are very proud of our performance. Thanks to each player’s individual strengths and Jonas Neirich’s consistently strong play, we can look back on the experience with a positive outlook.

Once again this year, key players are reaching the age limit, but the next generation in competition classes III and IV is already ready to take the field.

Career Fair Offers Guidance Through the Maze of Opportunities

Archive, News

High school graduation—and then what? This question comes up quite often, because high school seniors often don’t yet know exactly where their path will lead once they’ve earned their high school diploma.

Through several initiatives, the Steinmühle is placing greater emphasis on career guidance. One such initiative is the Career Information Day organized by the Marburg-Schloss Rotary Club, which was last held two years ago and has now once again drawn students in Qualification Phase 1 to the Steinmühle Forum.

Representatives from numerous professional fields were on hand to explain to the young people, in small group discussions, what formal and personal qualifications are required for their potential dream careers. Professions represented included those in the fields of medicine, business, industry, law, IT, technology, and pharmacy, as well as engineering, law enforcement, the German Armed Forces, psychology, journalism, banking, and international business.

Staff members from the German Red Cross Nurses’ Association were also there, as it is one of the many organizations that offer opportunities to complete a voluntary social service year.

During the two-hour event, organizers Sigrid Stechmann (coordinator of school internships at Steinmühle) and Hans-Heinrich Bähr (Rotary Club Marburg-Schloss), along with Principal Björn Gemmer, observed lively discussions at all the tables. Thanks to this practical information, many students’ career choices were likely narrowed down or even solidified.

Company and University Sign Cooperation Agreement with Steinmühle Elementary School

Archive, News

With their signatures, Ferrero, CSL Behring, and Philipps University of Marburg formalized their partnership with the Steinmühle Bilingual Elementary School. All three secured a quota of spots at the school, which will open for the 2019–20 school year.

“It’s a sign of the utmost trust,” said Egon Vaupel, chairman of the Schulverein Steinmühle support association, expressing his delight and describing it as an “emotional moment.” About eight years had passed since the first discussions between the school and industry, and now, guided by a clear vision but also through a great deal of hard work and perseverance, they had reached their goal and were able to offer an international track.

Company representatives Karl-Heinz Feußner (Ferrero), Tanja Templer (CSL Behring), and Prof. Dr. Michael Bölker of Philipps University of Marburg unanimously described this development as a “decisive competitive and locational advantage.” Karl-Heinz Feußner explained: “In our company alone, we have employees from 50 different countries. So it’s a crucial factor to be able to offer existing or future employees an international education for their children.”

Both the company and the university benefit because employees’ children are either prepared for life abroad through instruction in both German and English, or—if they come from abroad—find that the school’s academic standards match their own. “This ensures the attractiveness of our location,” says Tanja Templer (CSL Behring) with conviction, adding: “The success of a filled position and its incumbent always depends on the satisfaction of the employee’s family.”

“An international branch of the school has always been missing here”

“We depend on attracting young researchers and professors,” said Prof. Dr. Michael Bölker, adding: “Actually, we’ve always lacked an international branch here in Marburg.” Petra Kienle, head of Department VI (International Affairs and Family Services) at Philipps University, shares this assessment. She was involved in the negotiations leading up to the partnership but was unable to attend the signing ceremony.

“The numerous internationally oriented companies in the region have long had the topic of ‘international schools’ on their agenda. We are pleased that we can now get started in earnest,” says Oskar Edelmann, Deputy Executive Director of the Kassel-Marburg Chamber of Commerce and Industry (IHK). “This new educational program is a key component in attracting skilled workers and thus helps secure the region’s position as a business hub. The International School of Central Hesse will certainly play a key role in helping regional companies attract and retain international skilled workers. The excellent and dedicated collaboration between the school, businesses, the university, regional management, and the IHK has paid off.”

Information Session on November 29

Meanwhile, Steinmühle continues to work on creating the best possible conditions for the launch of the new school division next summer. The imminent completion of the new middle school building and the ongoing renovation of the main building are part of this effort, reported Managing Director Dirk Konnertz. In the medium term, a new elementary school building and a gym will be constructed in the coming years, explained Principal Bernd Holly, outlining the next steps.

For those interested in enrolling their children at the Steinmühle Bilingual Elementary School, an information session will be held on November 29 in the school’s forum. “We would like to introduce you to the concept of the Steinmühle Bilingual Elementary School and also discuss the start of the so-called ‘flexible school start,’” explained Principal Björn Gemmer. The event begins at 7:30 p.m.

New Riding Arena for Better Conditions

Archive, News

Completely renovated to measure 20 by 60 meters, it is undoubtedly a visual asset: the new riding arena of the Steinmühle Riding Club. The company Heus Reitplatzbau from Elz carried out the work here, transforming the old arena into a space that offers better conditions for the school horses, their riders, and all users. A herd of six Shetland ponies, including their youngest foal—just six months old—roams the arena here, along with four ponies and seven full-sized horses.

The project was spearheaded and primarily funded by the Steinmühle Riding Club. In addition, grants were provided by the state, the district, the city, and the State Sports Federation. The Sparkasse Marburg-Biedenkopf, S&S Immobilien, and Begro supported the riding arena renovation with donations.

Thanks to the new facility, riding hours are more flexible, and riders have more opportunities to tailor their riding time to their individual needs. Riders now have access to a jumping arena and a dressage arena, which means they are less likely to “get in each other’s way,” confirm riding instructor and trainer Beate Schridde and Olivia Vollhardt, president of the Steinmühle Riding and Sports Club. Both are pleased to now be able to offer further improved opportunities for training horses and riders.

Addiction Project on Alcohol Use

Archive, News

“Hackedicht”—You’re Better Off Without It!—This campaign by the Hessian State Medical Association is a regular feature on the Steinmühlen calendar. To educate 8th-grade students about the effects of alcohol, highlight potential risks, and answer questions, Steinmühlen teachers Nicole Hohm and Heike Rabben-Martin work closely with Dr. Birgit Wollenberg, director of the District Health Office.

Once again, the event began with a presentation by the physician, who highlighted the potential dangers of alcohol and described how addiction can manifest itself. She also explained the biological processes that take place when alcohol is consumed and, in the worst-case scenario, consumed in excess.

So-called “drunk goggles” were used to demonstrate to the students what it feels like to act under the influence of alcohol. They simulate being drunk and give students a sense of what it’s like to lose control of their senses due to alcohol. It was evident that even very simple tasks proved quite difficult for the young people while in this “drunk” state!

“Ultimately, our campaign is about learning to drink responsibly and developing an understanding of how to recognize one’s personal limits,” explained Nicole Hohm. — An important topic with valuable insights that the Steinmühlen students will carry with them into the rest of their lives.

The initiative by the State Medical Association is supported by the Hessian Ministry of Education and Cultural Affairs and the Hessian Ministry of Social Affairs and Integration.

Strong Response to Information Sessions for New 5th Graders

Archive, News

With an information evening for parents and an open house for the whole family, Steinmühle once again provided information this year to numerous prospective students interested in a spot in 5th grade for the upcoming 2019–20 school year.

At the well-attended evening event, principals Björn Gemmer and Bernd Holly, along with Frank Wemme, the academic director, outlined the school’s structure, daily routine, educational philosophy, curriculum, and admission criteria, and explained the school’s mission. It was made clear that Steinmühle allows each student to focus on their own individual interests—regardless of the area in which the student has personal strengths and wishes to develop them further. The possibility of earning the Hessian International Abitur through continuous participation in bilingual instruction starting in 7th grade was also discussed. Furthermore, the discussion covered the successful project-based learning at Steinmühle as well as the school’s quality management system, through which the school regularly evaluates itself to ensure continuous improvement.

Impressions from School

The information day, the second part of the overall event, gave the students—who are currently in fourth grade—a chance to experience many aspects of Steinmühlen. Divided into groups, they were invited to explore various aspects of the curriculum, marveled at the experiments in the NaUnt (science) program, listened to pieces performed by the wind ensemble, and tried their hand at pottery—with great success. A tour of the campus gave everyone involved a sense of the classrooms and sports facilities, and it was explained that the ongoing renovation of the main building will result in even better conditions. Using an interactive board, attendees were able to get a sense of what teaching at Steinmühle will look like in the future—a future in which not only will tablet-based instruction be gradually introduced, but the traditional chalkboard will also be phased out step by step. Finally, parents had the opportunity to speak directly with parent representatives in the Steinmühle upper school room. There, they received first-hand answers to any questions that might have arisen following the information provided earlier.

The school administration and Managing Director Dirk Konnertz were pleased to report that both information sessions for the future 5th-grade class at Steinmühle once again drew an extremely high level of interest, at least as high as last year. We would like to thank the students and faculty members who helped organize the information day.

Students at Steinmühlen were allowed to vote

Archive, News

Under the banner of “Junior Elections,” schools across Germany or within a state can hold internal “elections” and invite students to cast their political votes. The process is modeled after official elections. After the Junior Elections at Steinmühle were a success in 2017, our school once again participated in the Junior Elections this year as part of the Hessian state parliamentary elections. Voting took place on October 19. All students in grades 9 through Q1 were eligible to participate. The project was organized by teachers Erno Menzel and Eva Stelz, with support from the hardworking election volunteers from the German and history tracks.

302 of the eligible students voted in the election. Voter turnout was 87.3%.

Many of the students expressed their conviction that the project helps them form political opinions and gain a useful overview of the electoral process.

The “Juniorwahl” project is sponsored by Kumulus e.V., a nonprofit, nonpartisan association based in Berlin that is involved in several projects in the field of political education. The initiative can be found online at www.juniorwahl.de.

The illustrations accompanying our article show the results of the statewide junior election held in conjunction with the state legislative elections, as well as the students of Steinmühle School casting their ballots.

A night hike sharpens the senses and builds self-confidence

Archive, News

The students at Steinmühle Boarding School went on a special nighttime hike along a path lit by lanterns. Divided into five small groups, each accompanied by two teachers, the entire boarding school community set off through the forest. The entire group reached the starting point by “shuttle service”—that is, on four wheels. During this time, the first part of a story was told. From the start of the night hike, the group continued on foot: first through the Cappeler Forest and then through a residential area, before later returning to Steinmühle. The path was marked by lights along the way. The individual groups, which set off at 30-minute intervals, had to find their own way along the route. During the waiting time between groups, there were campfires, bread on a stick, and several rounds of Werewolf in the tea room.

Several stations and tasks

We stopped at various stations along the hike. There were different tasks to complete:

Station 1: Lie on a tarp in a meadow and listen to the sounds of the forest at night

Station 2: An interactive game focused on teamwork

Station 3: The tour’s first highlight: We made our way cross-country through the dark forest along a 100-meter-long rope stretched from tree to tree. We had to be careful here, as fallen trees here and there posed a tripping hazard.

Station 4: From here on, those who dare should cover a certain distance on their own

Station 5: Here, everyone heard the rest of the opening story and received a candle for the next station

Station 6: Teamwork was once again required here: The groups had to cover a distance together, and the candles of all members had to remain lit the entire time.

Developing a Sense of Belonging

As part of a partnership, the stations were staffed by volunteers from the Protestant Youth Center in Cappel, who participated in setting up, taking down, and running the night event on a voluntary basis and with great dedication. After the hike, all the groups were able to warm up by the fire with punch and hot orange juice. According to the team of educators, the goal of the night hike was not the classic “spooky experience” typically associated with summer camps or camping trips. Rather, it was about fostering a sense of community, sharpening the senses outside of everyday life, and gaining confidence in oneself and one’s own abilities. A big thank you to the staff of the Protestant Youth Center in Cappel for their dedication!
