Field trips organized by the residential groups provide opportunities for their first shared experiences

Archive, News

At the start of each school year, on the first weekend after summer break, the individual house groups at Steinmühle Boarding School travel to different destinations to get to know each other better away from their everyday routines. The residential groups change slightly every year. The weekend is a great and important opportunity for each group to bond anew.

As a general rule, weekend activities are of great importance for the future: the first close friendships are formed, and the first shared experiences are had. These are moments that people look back on again and again later in life.

Stammhaus is camping at Lake Bigge

The residents of the main dorm went camping at Lake Bigge in the Sauerland region. There, they first went swimming in the lake and had a barbecue before the group later retired to their tents. On Saturday, the team drove to Plettenberg to visit the Aquamagis water park. There, they were drawn to eleven slides where speeds of up to 100 km/h could be reached. The boarding school students also tried out the free-fall slide and enjoyed endless loops.

Eco-Home Explores the Surrounding Area

For the Biohaus, a new residential group consisting entirely of new students in grades 5 through 8, the program included getting to know the city of Marburg to familiarize themselves with their new home. The girls and boys traveled to the Waldhaus on the Richtsberg—the future weekend retreat for international students—and spent an active weekend there, enjoying a walk in the woods, a trip to the movies, pedal boating, a tour of the castle, and a visit to the climbing forest to round out the weekend.

Mühle travels to Wolfsburg, the “Autostadt”

The residents of the mill headed to Wolfsburg to stay at a campground with an on-site swimming pool. On Saturday, the group visited the Autostadt in Wolfsburg, which offered not only cars but also a wide range of recreational activities. They also explored other places of interest in the city and the surrounding area.

The Westfalenhaus is moving to the Netherlands

The group with the most participants—24 students—traveled to South Holland to visit a farm with its own petting zoo. On Saturday, the itinerary included a visit to The Hague, about 40 kilometers away. Since the weather was ideal, the beach there was one of the most popular spots. The group wrapped up the weekend in the neighboring country with a barbecue, games, and a campfire. Of course, the traditional game of Werewolf in the evening was a must.

Hessenhaus Visits a Climbing Park Near Fulda

The students from the Hessenhaus moved into a vacation apartment near Fulda. On Saturday, the plan was to visit the climbing forest, try out the ten courses, and ride the 800-meter-long Europa cable car, which is one of the longest cable cars in Europe. The Hessenhaus group watched for the first signs of the Perseid meteor shower and its shower of shooting stars on the night leading into Sunday. Armed with sleeping bags and warm clothing, the girls headed out to a field where they could enjoy an unobstructed and clear view of the starry sky. The night of shooting stars required some concentration, so time literally flew by. After returning to the Steinmühle boarding school on Sunday, the group was able to relax a bit to recharge for the upcoming school week.

Cambridge Certificate for 18 participants

Archive, News

Congratulations to the successful graduates of Nicole Hohm’s Cambridge Business English course: The students performed exceptionally well, as they were all certified at the B2 level—a level typically expected only by the time students take their high school graduation exams. The students in the photo achieved this by the end of their eleventh-grade year. Two of them, Jana Haas and Justus Schneider, even reached C1—the language proficiency level of educated native speakers. Principal Björn Gemmer congratulated the successful group on behalf of the Steinmühlen administration team. The Cambridge exam certificates are recognized worldwide and assess writing, reading, listening, and speaking skills. Posing for the group photo (back row, from left to right): Niklas Pohl, Paulina Lölkes, Jonas Baalbaki, Justus Schneider, Johannes Korn, David Binz, Principal Björn Gemmer, (front row, zigzag, from left to right): English teacher Nicole Hohm, Jana Haas, Tristan Bruchmann, Chiara Scheffczyk, Jaqueline Herrmann, Bodam Lee, Carolin Mauersberger, Jacqueline Mopils, Lara Benisch, Dana Plamper. Missing from the photo: Geonhyeok Noh, Hannah Busch, and Hannah Hartmann.

The first Stone Mill Day featured music, singing, and a touch of excitement

Archive, News

With cheerful music and singing, Steinmühle welcomed the students of the new fifth-grade classes to the Forum. The sixth-grade class showed a lot of enthusiasm. A year ago, these girls and boys stood in this very spot, waiting to find out their class assignments. Today, they were the ones welcoming the new fifth graders with performances from last year’s hit musical, “Götterolympiade.”
The audience, consisting of parents and family members, showed great stamina in the completely packed hall on what was perhaps the hottest morning of the week and cheered on their own children: Would their best friend end up in the same class? The homeroom teachers—Nicole Hohm, Stephan Steinebach, and Nina Kvachko (the latter standing in for Dirk Lange)—kept everyone in suspense as they took turns drawing “their” students’ name tags. The now complete and brand-new classes 5a, 5b, and 5c first posed together as a group, then individually for the photographer.

Steinmühlen T-shirts from the Friends Association

While all the guests helped themselves to coffee, cold drinks, and cookies, the new fifth-graders at Steinmühlen made their way to their classrooms together with their homeroom teachers. – The starting gun had been fired for everyday life at the new school! The first day of school was rounded off with the presentation of Steinmühlen T-shirts by the chair of the booster club, Jasmine Weidenbach. A few students have already been spotted wearing their new shirts…
The event, organized by Frank Wemme in his capacity as educational director, was opened by the school principals, Björn Gemmer and Bernd Holly. They had deliberately avoided long speeches to test the new students’ patience as little as possible, given the warm temperatures and the already exciting nature of the day. Ulrike Wilmsmeyer, Daniel Sans, and Frank Wemme were responsible for creating the perfect musical atmosphere, both in an organizational capacity and as performers. As members of the musical theater band and the StoneMill house band, respectively, they inspired the students—Nela Haeberle, Tom Herfert, Fynn Konnertz, Janne Schweitzer, and Flûte Seifart. — A wonderful testament to the fact that music is part of the culture at Steinmühle right from the start.

Beate Schridde, riding instructor and trainer at Steinmühlen: Her passion for horses began at birth

Archive, News

That intense passion may eventually fade. Most parents of teenage girls sense this coming when their daughters don’t want to leave the riding stable at all. Knowing full well that interests can change over time, they still encourage their young riders.

Beate Schridde, riding instructor and trainer at the Steinmühle Riding School, was born into the world of horses. No one needed to inspire her—her passion for horses had already been alive and well on the Schridde family farm seven years before she was born. Schridde Leistungszucht—a name synonymous with show jumping!

Beate Schridde’s childhood home was located on the estate in Vöhrum, Lower Saxony, between Braunschweig and Hanover. She used to wake up in the morning to the sound of horses neighing and the smell of the stables.

If there’s anyone who has equestrian sports in her blood, it’s Beate Schridde. Having later trained as a horse manager and riding instructor with an A-level coaching license, she didn’t just make it her mission to pass on her passion for equestrian sports. She also developed her own enthusiasm and qualified to compete in dressage, cross-country, and show jumping—both nationally and internationally. In show jumping, she even competed up to the S-class, the highest level. To this day, her heart still beats for the show jumping course.

Anyone who knows exactly what a good horse must offer and be capable of, and who knows from personal experience what a rider’s role should entail, is in high demand as a riding instructor and trainer. Beate Schridde has been associated with Steinmühle, where she works today, for over 15 years. The up-and-coming rider Nicola Pohl, based at Hofgut Dagobertshausen, also learned to ride here. Beate Schridde played a pivotal role in the young rider’s equestrian career for several crucial years as a salaried riding instructor and FN-certified trainer for the Pohl family. Today, Nicola Pohl successfully competes in world-renowned tournaments.

Beate Schridde wouldn’t be Beate Schridde if she lacked the ambition to prepare not only riders but also horses to perform at their best in the dressage arena, on the show jumping course, or even on cross-country trails. While her brother Claus successfully continues the Schridde family’s performance breeding program in northern Germany—with six show-jumping-oriented foals expected in 2019 alone—Beate Schridde devotes herself to training and riding young horses alongside her regular work. She also offers additional services such as presenting horses at mare performance tests and preparing them for stallion licensing. Training courses for beginners, those returning to the sport, or ambitious competition riders are also part of her repertoire.

You can almost sense that behind all these activities, even before a regular workday begins, lies a deep passion. The joy she finds in what she does puts into perspective the time and physical effort invested by this dedicated 49-year-old, who handles maneuvering the horse trailer and trailer with such ease that it looks as if they were wheelbarrows. “It has to be that way,” she remarks casually, “after all, there’s valuable cargo in there.”

That’s right. Beate Schridde has driven not only four-legged competition winners but also quite a few neighing prize winners from equestrian performance tests. “Living sports equipment”—each with its own personality and different needs. “That’s what,” says the passionate rider, “sets it apart from other sports.” The dachshund breed is also known for having a “personality of its own.” She has two young ladies of this breed who are part of her life.

Awards for Extracurricular Activities

Archive, News

Before the report cards are handed out, certificates are awarded first. That was the case at Steinmühle this time as well, “because we believe that dedication should be recognized even when it takes place outside of class,” says Principal Björn Gemmer. Whether in sports, cultural activities, science and math competitions, or volunteer work.

Divided into two groups—grades 5 through 7 and 8 through 11—dozens of students received certificates and a sweet treat. With the support of the student council team—Bodam Lee and Caro Mauersberger—as well as their colleague Malte Klimczak, the school administration honored young athletes, scientists, mathematicians, musicians, bookworms, film producers, and many more. Students were recognized for providing technical support at events, as well as for their social engagement and commitment to the community—whether through fundraising for a good cause, volunteering with a club, or, for example, working in the school garden.

“We can only recognize what we know about or what has been brought to our attention,” concluded Principal Björn Gemmer. So anyone who participates in extracurricular activities that fall into the categories mentioned may be a candidate for next year’s awards round.

Saving Lives: Eighth-Graders Keep Pushing Until the Doctor Arrives

“The worst thing you can do is nothing at all.”—With these words, which were both a warning and an encouragement, Prof. Dr. Hinnerk Wulf, Director of the Department of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine at the University Hospital of Giessen-Marburg (UKGM), explained to the eighth-graders at Steinmühle the importance of first aid in the event of sudden cardiac arrest. After all, it can happen anywhere that people find themselves in this emergency and rely on first responders to keep a clear head. As part of a pilot project, the physician and his colleagues Dr. Markus Spies, Karsten Szeder, and Jörg Dieterich spent two days teaching the approximately 70 eighth-grade students at Steinmühle what to do in the event of a cardiovascular arrest and how to proceed: Press on the chest at a rapid pace while following certain steps—until the emergency medical technician arrives.

Resuscitation as a School Subject?

As part of a pilot project currently underway at three medical centers in Central Hesse, the goal is to gather insights into how and at what age students can be introduced to this life-saving topic. The Conference of Ministers of Education is planning to potentially integrate the topic of CPR into the school curriculum.

Steinmühle is proud to be a pioneer in this pilot project in the region and would like to thank everyone involved, both in leadership roles and on the ground. The “Students Save Lives” pilot project is being carried out by the departments of anesthesiology and intensive care medicine in Marburg, Giessen, and Frankfurt in cooperation with the Hessian State Medical Association and the Ministry of Education and Cultural Affairs.

With 8,000 to 100,000 cases per year, sudden cardiac death is one of the leading causes of death in Germany.

Steinmühle Welcomes New Colleagues and Bids Farewell to “Dance Guru” Fido Wagler

Archive, News
internat landschulheim steinmühle vortrag in marburg, hessen

Nothing stays the same—not even at Steinmühle. So the school administration and Steffen Ullwer, a member of the teaching staff, took the opportunity of the end-of-school-year barbecue to announce some personnel changes at the school.

When colleagues leave, there’s always a touch of sadness. Anja Zelle, for example, will no longer be teaching students at Steinmühle but will instead be teaching in Thuringia. Thomas Korte’s move isn’t quite as far—he’s heading to the neighboring district of Frankenberg.

Steinmühle wishes them both all the best!

With Fido Wagler’s departure, Steinmühle is losing a true institution. “A void we cannot fill,” said Principal Bernd Holly. Friedhelm Wagler, the English and dance teacher with a passion for movement and good food, has carved out a strong reputation among his colleagues through his inspiring dance activities and his deep commitment to the party catering business. That’s why we really don’t want to let him go into his well-deserved—yet far too early—retirement.

“We’d like to thank you for your work in the sports department,” said Bernd Holly, and he was relieved to announce, “that Fido will be staying with us a little longer to work in the catering service.”

The English Department, led by Nicole Hohm, paid tribute to their colleague with an elaborate, heartfelt, and enthusiastic performance. Wearing “Fido wigs,” the members performed several skits under the theme “International Fido Day” and were rewarded with enthusiastic applause. Of course, later on, all the colleagues had to rise from their seats and, following Fido’s instructions, join him in a lively performance in a circle—which, naturally, they did willingly.

New Teachers for the start of the school year

As sad as the Steinmühle faculty was to see their departing colleagues leave, there was still cause for celebration. That’s because, in turn, René Schulenberg and Michael Schmidt will be joining the teaching staff starting next school year. While René Schulenberg has come from just a short distance away at another high school in Marburg, Michael Schmidt is transferring to the “Mühle” from Frankenberg.

An experienced teacher will be joining the boarding school team. Heidi Kesting will be supporting the team at the Bremerhaus.

The contributions of Oleg Koch, the Steinmühle caretaker, should not be underestimated; following his colleague’s departure, he has recently been handling all the work entirely on his own. Starting in August, he will have some help: Viktor Kreuz is the new addition to the team, and he will be responsible for maintenance work and much more.

We wish all our new employees a wonderful time at Steinmühlen!

Sports project days provided an opportunity to try out their favorite sports

Just before summer break, things really picked up again at Steinmühle. During the sports project days on June 20 and 21, students had the chance to try out a sport they’d always wanted to learn. Project descriptions helped them choose the right activity. To facilitate overall organization, the young athletes had to list four different projects in their order of preference during the preparation phase. Not only was school sports coordinator Michael Neirich involved in the two days of sports, but practically the entire teaching staff as well.

Nearly 30 activities awaited the students—from American football to wakeboarding. Many of these took place outside Steinmühle. The beautiful weather made it easy to enjoy the activities, which, by their very nature, cannot take place indoors. The sports activities were organized in stages for students in grades 5 through 11.

A Thank-You at a Barbecue

The Steinmühlen students could choose from: American football, badminton, ballet for everyone, basketball, beach volleyball, bridge, cheerleading, bike tour (with the option of an overnight stay), fencing, field hockey, fitness workshop, Frisbee, training & mobility, soccer for boys, soccer for girls, geocoaching, golf, judo, karate, climbing, mountain biking, Rhönrad, rowing, squash and fitness, tennis, table tennis, wakeboarding, and hiking.

On the afternoon of the second day of the event, Steinmühle showed its appreciation to the coaches from the partner clubs by hosting a joint barbecue. “A small token of our thanks for the great collaboration,” said Michael Neirich and the leadership team.

Graduation Ceremony for Our High School Seniors

Archive, News
gruppenfoto von schülerinnen und schülern aus dem internat landschulheim steinmühle in marburg, hessen

The goal has been achieved; the high school diplomas are being handed out. Great joy dominates this day, but there’s always a touch of wistfulness as well. This year was no exception: A total of 74 high school graduates earned their general university entrance qualification at Steinmühle in 2018. During the graduation ceremony on June 16, the speakers paid tribute to this high-achieving class, which produced the highest average Abitur score in Steinmühle’s history. Furthermore, not a single student failed to pass the Abitur this school year.

Nevertheless, in his speech, Principal Björn Gemmer spoke of the “second chance as an important virtue.” No one should be stigmatized because of their failures: “Failure doesn’t have to be a bad thing.”

During the morning, which was hosted by Principal Bernd Holly at the microphone, Manfred Schwarz spoke as a parent representative. For him, that day marked the end of a 51-year history with Steinmühlen—including his parents’ time at the school, his own, and that of his five children. So it was no surprise that the themes of “gratitude” and “pride” were given special emphasis in his speech. Rosie Boebel and Gisela Opper represented the teaching staff with a vivid joint presentation. The event was accompanied by music from the upper school choir.

The photos show the entire graduating class as well as the individual tutorial groups and provide a glimpse of the numerous tributes and award ceremonies.

There were T-shirts and music at the reception for the new fifth graders

Glückliche Schülerin aus der Schule & Internat Steinmühle auf dem Schulhof in Marburg, Hessen

Steinmühle welcomed the new students of the future 5th-grade classes with coffee and cake. The afternoon, spent together with parents and some members of the Steinmühle school community, provided an opportunity for everyone to get to know one another in a relaxed atmosphere. In particular, the teachers who will be serving as homeroom teachers for the 5th-grade classes in the upcoming 2018–19 school year introduced themselves.

To give everyone a chance to exercise their memory, Jasmine Weidenbach and Ilona Voigt-Laske, on behalf of the Steinmühlen Support Association, handed out T-shirts with the students’ names on them to all the students, which they were, of course, allowed to take home. In addition, a portrait photo was taken of each child to be used for their student ID.

Under the expert guidance of Andreas Jamin, the wind instrument class of this year’s fifth-grade cohort showcased the skills they had developed in just a few months, demonstrating just how far one can come on a wind instrument—even if they first picked it up last fall.

In terms of organization, Frank Wemme and Fido Wagler, along with other volunteers, were responsible for the success of the afternoon; their team of older students had, as always, taken care of the catering.
