Steinmühlen Students Win State Basketball Championship
In March, the team—made up of students from classes 6b and 7b—had qualified for the state championship in basketball in Competition Class IV, which meant they had essentially already achieved their goal for the season. Among the six teams in the final on May 7, Steinmühle wasn’t exactly among the favorites, and this seemed to be confirmed in their opening game against Grünberg. Despite a solid team effort, they suffered a loss to start things off. But then they managed to score big against the Main-Taunus School in Hofheim and defeat the confident girls from Fulda 36–34 in the semifinals.
The final match against the Grünberg team was a frantic back-and-forth battle for both teams. Thanks to a very tenacious performance, however, our girls never let their opponents pull ahead by more than five points, so that they tied the score shortly before the end of the game and secured a 25–22 victory as the final buzzer sounded.
Overall, the team impressed with its strong tactical discipline, unshakable self-confidence, and remarkable harmony. In addition, they had been excellently prepared and coached by Theo Nauheimer and David Irnich (BC Marburg).
