Plus-MINT students at Steinmühlen Boarding School work closely with the Department of Geosciences at Philipps University of Marburg

Collaborations & Partnerships, Life at Boarding School, News, STEM, Talent Development

Fabian (16), Luis (15), Clara (15), and Marlene (15) are sitting in Room 126 at the Steinmühle, putting their heads together. They are discussing the next steps in their joint plus-MINT project, the “Boat Project.”

Looking Back: Since the summer of 2022, the four plus-MINT students at Steinmühle Boarding School have been enriching both the school’s STEM program and the boarding school community. In the fall of 2022, they began brainstorming ideas for their first major, independent project. “We wanted a joint project where each of us could contribute our respective STEM passions and that would also have practical relevance,” Fabian explains.

Antje Seel, who has been teaching biology and geography at Steinmühle since 2019, contacted Dr. Christoph Reudenbach of the Department of Geography at Philipps University of Marburg regarding the plus-MINT pilot project. Philipps University of Marburg and Steinmühle have had a cooperation agreement since 2018, forming a strong and strategic partnership in many respects.

Dr. Christoph Reudenbach showed great interest in collaborating and, together with the plus-MINTIs (as they are affectionately called at the boarding school), developed an idea for a boat that can perform semi-automatic water analyses.

Boat Project in collaboration with Dr. Reudenbach from the Department of Geography

The idea is to build an autonomous, sensor-equipped boat so that we can avoid entering the sensitive ecosystem in the Gisselberger Spannweite restoration area (located immediately adjacent to the Steinmühle site) as much as possible. This platform is designed to monitor water quality in the Lahn River and also to collect water samples.

In close collaboration with the Department of Earth Sciences at the University of Marburg, the “boat idea” became the Boat Project. Dr. Christoph Reudenbach from the Department of Geography is actively supporting the plus-MINT students with his expertise. In addition, the students are mentored by the Steinmühle STEM team—Antje Seel, Dr. Patrick Szabo, and Dr. Jutta Töhl-Borsdorf.

“Projects like this are only possible thanks to the personal dedication and idealism of individuals. Dr. Reudenbach visits Steinmühle regularly and supports the students with their project, always treating them as equals and showing great dedication. This is a great opportunity for the students to learn how to build complex devices and program them independently for research purposes, as well as to deepen their knowledge in the fields of robotics, programming, and environmental sciences,” reports Dr. Jutta Töhl-Borsdorf, head of the STEM and Plus-STEM division at Steinmühle.

“The Boot Project reflects our STEM expertise AND it’s a perfect fit for Steinmühle, given its close proximity to the Lahn,” says Luis.

Award from the Hopp Foundation and prize money in the amount of 2,500,- €

The relevance and timeliness of the “Boot Project” were underscored by a special award that the Steinmühle received in March 2023:

For its commitment to STEM education, Steinmühle won the Hopp Foundation’s school award, worth 2,500 euros, as part of the “Jugend forscht” state competition. A prerequisite for participating in the competition was a detailed application letter, in which the boat project by the plus-MINT students played a major role.

“I didn’t expect us to win the Hopp Prize right away, even though the project was still in its early stages—I guess we really struck a chord with the jury,” Luis reports proudly.

Part of the prize money has already been invested in a high-performance 3D printer. “Now we can professionally print custom-made mounts for the sensors on the prototype—that’s really cool,” said Clara.

(From left to right: Fabian, Clara, Marlene, and Luis)

The “Boat Project,” including the prototype, is set to be submitted to the next “Jugend forscht” competition. We’re keeping our fingers crossed for the plus-MINT team.

The next round of applications for plus-MINT will begin in fall 2023. For more information, visit www.plus-mint.de

Boarding School Family Day Goes to the Lahn Opening

Events & Celebrations, Former Students & Alumni, Life at Boarding School, News

Amid bright sunshine and a wonderful summer atmosphere, the boarding school’s Family Day took place on June 17 at the Steinmühle grounds.

Thanks to this year’s fantastic June weather, the boarding school community spontaneously combined Family Day with the traditional Lahn Opening. Many highlights awaited the boarding school students and their guests at the Lahn grounds. A giant water slide provided plenty of fun. The beach volleyball match was the sporting highlight for both active players and spectators. Everyone could cool off in the Lahn at any time. For those who preferred to get out on the Lahn, stand-up paddleboards and canoes were available. The beach bar served slushies, homemade iced tea, and fruit salad.

Parents’ Lounge and DIY Station

The atmosphere in the Steinmühle courtyard was a bit more relaxed. For the first time, there was a parents’ lounge: “We wanted to create a space where parents could strike up conversations and share ideas,” explains Anke Muszynski, head of the boarding school at Steinmühle.

Right next to the parents’ lounge, creativity was in full swing at the DIY (Do It Yourself) station. Colorful headbands and flowers, silver charms, and cords invited visitors to get crafty. The glitter tattoos were especially popular and could be seen adorning the arms of many parents that evening.

The delicious barbecue buffet rounded out the family day, and we’re already looking forward to the next time we can say, “A warm welcome to Family Day!”

The Steinmühlen Boarding School’s Media Education Program

Life at Boarding School, News, Politics, Business & Responsibility

A conversation with Marion Widera, media educator at the boarding school
Media are playing an increasingly important role in the everyday lives of our children and young people. For this reason, it is important to engage with them and discuss them together, developing an attitude towards these issues that allows us to always have an inner compass in the media world.
Marion Widera does exactly that at Steinmühle. She has been a media educator at the boarding school since September 2019 and works with the teaching team and the children and young people in the areas of media education and media literacy.
“Ms. Widera, you have been a media educator at the Steinmühle boarding school since 2019, how did it all begin back then?”
Marion Widera: “The position of media educator was newly created at that time. The teaching team and I started together and gradually approached the topic. Initially, I surveyed the boarding school staff to find out what was important to them regarding media. What topics were important to the teachers, what did the children and young people at the boarding school want? This helped us develop an idea of where we should begin.”

What exactly happened after the inquiries?
M.W.: “We started by holding workshops for the boarding school community. These were offered weekly during study hall hours. Together, we explored various topics, starting with targeted searches using Google. In the process, we used and learned about the advanced features. This is particularly advantageous when conducting targeted searches for specific topics. In addition, we played and discussed games related to data protection and fake news. We also addressed topics such as gender roles in the media. Furthermore, interested students had the opportunity to experience their favorite game from the perspective of a game tester. After playing for a while, the game was analyzed and evaluated based on various criteria using a questionnaire. The criteria included, for example, graphics, music, presentation, authenticity, assessment of the age rating, fun factor, entertainment value, etc.

How did the workshops come to be implemented in schools as well?
We began collaborating with Marcel Kalb, who was the school’s JUMBA representative (Youth Media Protection Officer) at the time. I am currently working with Tim Elmshäuser, who has taken over that role. We brainstormed ways to integrate this topic more into everyday school life and came up with the idea of holding workshops as a starting point. At the time, iPads had already been introduced, and it was clear to us that it wasn’t enough to simply provide support for using the technology; the digital resources and applications also needed to be addressed, and students needed guidance on how to use them.
The workshops on media pedagogy and media education are now firmly established in the curriculum. For the past two years, a three-hour workshop has been held once per semester for grades 5–10. For the coming school year, the number of hours will be expanded to two sessions of two hours each per semester.”

What topics are discussed?
M.W.: “We tested out various topics at the beginning. That’s how we developed a list of topics; workshop topics include, for example, cyberbullying, cybergrooming, the dream job of an influencer, hate speech, copyright, social media, and ‘Always On’ (what does it mean to be online all the time?).”

How do the children and teens respond to the workshops?
M.W.: “It varies a lot. Generally speaking, the younger students, aged 11–14, are more open and enjoy sharing their personal experiences in the digital world. You can tell that the topic is very important to them; they even come up to me during recess after the workshops, eager to talk and share their experiences. With the older students—those 14 and up—it’s a bit different; we might be able to further optimize the workshops for this age group. Currently, the participants fill out a questionnaire after each workshop, and I’m already looking forward to seeing the results.”

In addition to working directly with the children and teenagers, work has been ongoing on the Steinmühlen Boarding School’s media education concept. What is the current status?
M.W.: “The media education concept is complete. It will be officially integrated into our educational work starting in the 2023–2024 school year.”

What exactly is the media education concept?
“To put it simply, it’s a guide for the educational team and also for parents on how to deal with media. There are four major issues that can arise time and again among children and adolescents: cyberbullying, fake news, sexting, and excessive media use. The concept provides tips on how to address these four areas for educators, parents, and children and adolescents alike. And it’s about our stance as an educational team—as Steinmühle—on the topic of media and media use. We don’t want to take a negative stance, but rather to take a close look at the issues together with the students. Media consumption and social media can trigger digital stress and put us under pressure. Our approach is to shed light on the opportunities and risks and to encourage a critical engagement with the media.”

How has this approach been received so far?
M.W.: “With children and adolescents, it’s a long process. So far, we’ve had guidelines for digital media use that are based on the students’ ages. Teachers are in the thankless position of having to enforce these rules, which casts the topic of media in a negative light. Every family is probably familiar with the fact that the issue of cell phone time can also lead to arguments. I think this association makes it harder for students to see that educators also have other interests when it comes to media and smartphones and aren’t simply “against” them per se—which, incidentally, isn’t our stance either.”

What are your hopes for the future of media education at Steinmühle?
M.W.: “That the topic no longer carries a special status. A natural and open approach to the topic among educators, parents, and children and adolescents. Adults sometimes tread carefully on this topic because they don’t feel they’re on equal footing with children and teens, or that they don’t know enough about it. In my workshops, I’ve found that it’s important to engage with students in a dialogue that’s authentic, curious, and non-judgmental. It’s perfectly natural to learn from one another—and that goes for the world of media and digital technology as well. I can let them show me things; I don’t have to go into a workshop on “The Dream Job: Influencer” already knowing all the stars. The students bring this input with them and are happy to talk about it and take me into their world. And together with them, I can look at their stars and shed light on the marketing strategy behind influencers.”

Adventure-Filled Trips—Across Germany and Beyond

Class Trips, Field Trips, and School Outings, Life at Boarding School, News, Steinmühle on the Road

“Just like every year,” was the sentiment in May, when the experiential education trips were on the horizon. The boarding school students set off together with their teachers on a journey across Germany and even beyond the country’s borders. There really was something for everyone! In addition to a canoe trip through the beautiful Altmühl Valley, the itinerary included a hike through the Drachenschlucht gorge near Eisenach, a visit to the Klimahaus near Bremerhaven, and a camping trip at Lake Eder.

This year, there was a special place to stay in the scenic Odenwald, where a small group settled in comfortably at the Heuhotel am Lind’brunnen. Janna, one of the students, enthusiastically flung herself right into the freshly piled hay. “If we could sleep like this at boarding school, I’d do it every night,” she said with a laugh as she shook the hay out of her hair.

In addition to taking a break from everyday life, the weekend was also filled with action. We walked or drove to nearby Maubach Lake, where a few brave souls even ventured into the cool water. Next up was a trip to the climbing forest, which was just one of the weekend’s highlights. Well-secured, the students enthusiastically climbed across narrow beams or enjoyed rides on the zip lines. Together, they overcame challenges both big and small—and even a bit of a fear of heights. Of course, they also paid a visit to the summer toboggan run right next door. Despite the rain, the students didn’t let it spoil their fun and waved at the camera with big smiles. “It felt really good to just leave my phone behind for once,” noted student Saphira.

Before leaving the next morning, we couldn’t miss out on a fun cleanup party and one last game of hide-and-seek, of course. On the way back, we finally made a stop at the Felsenmeer. After the short hike, the ice cream tasted even better!

For those who wanted to burn off some energy, the trip to the Altmühltal was just the thing. From a cozy campground, they set out on the water in canoes, two to a canoe. After a few initial difficulties steering with the paddles, the students quickly got the hang of it. Still, one or two situations drew amused looks when they were recounted back at the boarding school. After a strenuous but very successful trip downstream, the group drove back to the campground, where—thanks to the good weather—they were able to round out the evening with a cozy campfire, delicious food from the grill, and good conversation. “The group really came together,” Marlon, who accompanied the students along with his colleague, later said enthusiastically.

The Steinmühle was also on the road in northern Germany. On the Wurster North Sea coast, the students were able to enjoy the sunshine right by the sea. In addition to walks on the beach, the group took a trip to the Klimahaus Bremerhaven, where the students embarked on an exciting journey around the world through Earth’s climate zones. In the interactive exhibition, they were able to experience the effects of climate change firsthand in a truly impressive way.

Another group of students headed toward Eisenach. In the Thuringian Forest, the itinerary included a hike through the impressive Dragon Gorge, which is sure to set nature lovers’ hearts racing. Wide at first, the moss-covered rock walls gradually narrow into a gorge that’s sometimes only shoulder-width wide. The group also visited the nearby Wartburg, which is likely one of Germany’s most famous castles. On the way back, they made a stop in Kassel to admire the Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe.

In addition to new destinations, this year’s trip once again offered the opportunity to take part in the now-almost-traditional camping trip to Lake Eder, where the focus was entirely on unwinding. Without cell phone reception or other everyday conveniences like running water and electricity, the students were able to consciously take some time for themselves.

This time, a special educational trip took the students to neighboring Poland, where the group took part in a two-day guided study tour of the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and also visited the city of Krakow.

One student described his experience on Instagram as follows: “Over the weekend, I had the opportunity to learn firsthand about the history of the Auschwitz and Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camps. My feelings were very mixed—on the one hand, grief for the victims, and on the other, anger toward all those who still support this today.”

We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the staff at the memorial for the moving and empathetic tour!

Theme Weekend at the Steinmühle – Media and Learning: AI, Blender, ChatGPT—How Can Media Support Our Learning?

Digitalization & AI, Life at Boarding School, News, Politics, Business & Responsibility

Media is playing an increasingly significant role in our students’ daily lives. For this reason, it is important to engage with media and discuss together how it can be used effectively in learning and at school in general, as well as the challenges its use presents. The students and teachers at Steinmühle took on this challenge as part of a joint themed weekend focused on media and learning.

In preparation for the upcoming high school graduation exams, the students and teachers explored topics such as study skills. To this end, a joint kickoff event began with a presentation of different learning styles, which the students could then identify with based on a self-assessment. These reflections were then explored in greater depth with the help of an online test. Questions such as “Do I remember things better when I walk around my room while studying?” or “What kind of music is best for studying?” played a role in the exercise. The main goal of this exploration was to help students make their learning more effective and to gain new ideas for different ways of learning.

Over the course of the weekend, a wide range of extracurricular activities helped students deepen this knowledge even further. In the “Learning by Explaining” program, a group of students explored how to effectively convey information to others—and in the process, learn themselves. Of course, the students put this into practice right away. To do so, they worked on various topics that they were able to bring up themselves. The “Presentations (Media and Presentations)” club also gave students the opportunity to present their existing knowledge in a clear and engaging way. One high school senior enthusiastically shared that, with her oral exams just around the corner, this had helped her prepare more effectively.

A group of students also explored the “Blender” software. This open-source program allows users to create 3D graphics. The session was led by Fabian, a student who is currently discovering the program for himself and was happy to share his knowledge with others. Together, the students succeeded in creating 3D models of objects they had brought with them. That evening, Fabian mentioned that he was already thinking about how a future workshop on the topic could be structured.

Another focus of the weekend was artificial intelligence (AI), as our students are increasingly using these tools in their everyday school life. In addition to exploring the practical implementation of various applications, the club also examined, among other things, the potential that artificial intelligence offers. Particular attention was paid to AI-powered tools designed to support schooling and learning. At the same time, the group examined potential limitations and discussed how AI can be used as efficiently and effectively as possible. In addition, the students explored ethical principles for using ChatGPT. For example, the group discussed the question of what interests companies might be pursuing by providing AI tools and what societal implications are associated with this.

What became particularly clear over the course of the weekend was that media has become an integral part of our daily lives, and that tools like ChatGPT can provide our students with valuable support in tackling academic challenges. At the same time, awareness grew regarding the limitations of artificial intelligence and the diverse opportunities for learning. In particular, the different learning styles remained a topic of conversation even after the weekend and will certainly be discussed more frequently in the future. We are already excited to see what new paths of learning the students will take.

Steinmühlen Rowers on Track for the Olympics: Outstanding Performances in the Double Sculls Pave the Way for Marc Weber to the European Championships

Contests & Awards, Life at Boarding School, News, Sports & Health, Talent Development

The Steinmühlen rower’s goal is to qualify for the Olympics

That’s quite an achievement: With a five-second lead, Steinmühlen rower Marc Weber and his partner Jonas Gelsen from the Nassovia Höchst Rowing Club clearly and confidently held off their opponents at the mid- and large-boat trials on the regatta course in Hamburg-Allermöhe. They had already won two out of two races on Saturday, so they didn’t even have to compete on Sunday. “With this victory in the qualifying round, the team has qualified for the European Championships in four weeks and will aim to secure an Olympic berth at the World Championships,” explained coach Martin Strohmenger.

“We were both a little nervous before the competition,” says Marc Weber. “After reviewing our ergometer results and our performance at the German Small Boat Championships in Brandenburg two weeks ago, we wanted to see where we stood,” he explains. “We managed to take a clear lead in the first race and also take the lead in the second race. If we do well at the European Championships as well—which I hope we will—then we can secure our spot and get the ‘go-ahead’ to qualify for the Olympics at the World Championships.”

“The support from Steinmühle helps me keep my head clear”

Marc Weber, for whom the weekend in Hamburg had been sunny—and not just in terms of the weather—said: “I’m very happy. We’re making great strides right now; we’re on the right track and moving very fast.” The athlete extended a big thank you to Steinmühle and to everyone there who supported him without making a big deal out of it. Weber: “I feel very well taken care of; my mind is clear. The Rudern und Sport Steinmühle club, along with the Steinmühle School and Boarding School, deserve a great deal of credit for helping us achieve significant success across Germany.”

High praise for their new recruit, Marc Weber—U23 World Champion in the single sculls (2019) and 2019 Athlete of the Year in Hesse—was in turn

Steinmühlen management, school administration, and the board of the Rudern und Sport Steinmühle association. “We would be delighted if this journey continues on an international level. We will continue to support this effort.”

Off to the Zillertal: A Ski Trip to the Steinmühle

Class Trips, Field Trips, and School Outings, Life at Boarding School, News, Sports & Health, Steinmühle on the Road

Just like last year, Steinmühle organized a ski trip. A total of sixteen students, accompanied by two teachers from the boarding school, set off for the beautiful Zillertal in Austria to spend a few exciting days on the slopes.

The Hochzillertal and Hochfügen ski resorts, which have been connected for more than ten years, offer world-class skiing at the entrance to the Zillertal. From the main entrance in Kaltenbach—where our ski trip participants were also staying—the lifts and runs extend up to nearly 2,400 meters, ensuring reliable snow conditions well into April. Skiing here therefore offers the perfect vacation experience for every taste. The students experienced this firsthand when they ventured onto the snow-covered slopes.

The Hochzillertal-Kaltenbach ski resort was just a few minutes away by ski bus. Whether they were seasoned skiers or eager beginners, the wide variety of runs meant that all participants could have fun at their own skill level. Those with absolutely no prior experience were able to learn the basics of skiing with the help of boarding school instructor Patric Hahn and gradually improve from there. Others ventured straight onto the difficult slopes and showed off their skills.

This time, the weather offered a colorful mix of sun, clouds, and wind. But even when fog limited visibility, the skiers didn’t let that dampen their spirits, of course. Instead, Patric said, “Bad weather makes for good skiers. ;-)”

The students were so motivated, however, that the group set off for the slopes at seven in the morning—at the students’ request. To offer even more variety, this time they also had the chance to try snowboarding.Various smaller challenges that the students set for themselves also sparked a lot of enthusiasm.

If you go skiing, you’ve got to eat well, too. We cooked for ourselves in the mornings and evenings. In addition to pasta Bolognese, the menu also included classic pizza, among other things. After washing the dishes together, the students took advantage of the accommodations’ amenities for cozy game nights. The exhausting days quickly took their toll, though, leaving most of them so worn out that many went to bed early to be ready for the next morning. Despite all the physical exertion that a day on the slopes entails, there was never a shortage of fun. A particularly amusing situation arose when some students rolled through the snow on their skis.

“We’ll definitely be back next year!”

As the students made their way home, they also expressed a desire to go skiing twice a year. With big smiles on their faces, they arrived at the boarding school late in the evening and excitedly recounted their experiences from the past few days. One thing is certain: a ski trip will once again be on the Steinmühlen calendar in 2024 so that we can make the most of the upcoming winter season. We’re already looking forward to it!

“A Wonderful Gift” — Boarding School Council Hosts First “Steinmühlen Senior Café”

Life at Boarding School, News, Social Engagement

On Sunday, February 26, 2023, the sky is a brilliant blue over Steinmühle, and the sun is finally shining again after many gray days. The Steinmühle Boarding School Council eagerly awaits the arrival of their guests. This afternoon, the 13-member Board of the Boarding School has invited guests to the “Senior Café” for the very first time.
Flashback: Viviana Leege, who has been at Steinmühle for five years and is chair of the boarding school council, boarding school director Anke Muszynski, and Angela Schönemann from the “Arbeit und Bildung e.V.” association are sitting together and discussing their next joint project.

Start of the collaboration in 2021: “Participating with dignity in Marburg”
In 2021, Steinmühle supported the association’s “Participating with Dignity in Marburg” project for the first time. The boarding school community lovingly handcrafted over 100 Christmas packages for this initiative and personally delivered the gifts to senior citizens in the region, together with Ms. Schönemann. The hand-designed cards and the Christmas bags filled with treats were very well received.
“Everyone was really happy about the gifts; we had many special encounters, and it was moving to see the joy on their faces,” says Fabian (16), a member of the boarding school council who helped organize the 2022 campaign. However, due to the cold weather and the contact restrictions in place at the time, they could only spend a short time together each time. “We felt it would be nice to spend more time with the seniors and be able to chat in a relaxed setting,” says boarding school council president Viviana (18). That’s how the idea for the “Steinmühlen Senior Café” was born.”

“These days, seniors often lack opportunities to get out of their daily routines. They want to participate in life, to be noticed and valued. Through our project ‘Participating with Dignity,’ we support people living alone between the ages of 60 and 98. For this group of people, Sundays are often the worst days of the week. The senior café is a wonderful gift for everyone involved on so many levels and fosters intergenerational encounters on an equal footing,” said Ms. Schönemann.

“We’ve all gotten a few years younger today.”

And now they’re here—the first guests of the “Senior Café.” They’ve come from Marburg and the surrounding area and were picked up from their homes by a specially organized shuttle service and brought to the Steinmühle. One of these volunteer drivers is Friederike Haack (83). She graduated from Steinmühle in 1966 and has brought along plenty of photos and stories for today’s gathering. The boarding school’s tea room smells wonderfully of fresh cake, and in no time at all, the ice is broken. Seniors and young people sit together in a relaxed atmosphere and enjoy their time together. “It was so refreshing to see how the young people reached out to us; we all felt a few years younger during our time at Steinmühle,” says Ms. Utschig, who, at 93, is the oldest guest at the senior café.
“It was a really nice and relaxing afternoon; next time we’ll definitely be able to sit outside in the sun and go for a walk,” says Viviana (18), already making plans for the next “Steinmühlen Senior Café.”

Boarding School Council—What’s It All About?
The Boarding School Council consists of 13 students in grades 8–13. Each of the boarding school’s six residential groups democratically elects a representative to the Boarding School Council. They meet once a week to plan and organize various activities. “Our goal is, on the one hand, to strengthen the community at the boarding school and, on the other hand, to give something back to society,” says Nico (20), a member of the Boarding School Council who has been at the school since 2020.
Patric Hahn, who has been an integral part of the educational team for nine years, adds: “The boarding school council is intended to actively promote democracy, tolerance, and participation within the boarding school community. The experience of self-efficacy plays a crucial role in this process.”

“Happiness is the only thing that doubles when you share it” — Mental Health Theme Weekend at the Boarding School

Life at Boarding School, Sports & Health

It’s raining. The Steinmühle is shrouded in a gray haze; it’s wet and cold. The sun rarely peeks out from behind the clouds. That makes it all the more important to take good care of your well-being during this gloomy time of year.

And that is exactly what the educational team and the Steinmühlen student body did during the mental health-themed weekend. These themed weekends take place regularly at the boarding school and are becoming increasingly popular among the boarding school community. In preparation, the educational team conducts extensive research on the respective topics and develops a customized program for Steinmühle. Creative, athletic, and playful activities are designed to help students develop an awareness of their mental well-being. The methods they learn can provide support during stressful everyday situations or challenging life phases. The theme of this weekend was “happiness.”

“Happiness is the only thing that doubles when you share it.”
Albert Schweitzer, physician and philosopher (1875–1965)

“What is happiness?” “Am I happy?” “How can I become happy?” “What can I do to feel happier?” These are big questions that certainly cannot be fully answered in a single weekend and that often require a personal approach. But the educational team did everything they could to provide the students with valuable insights and strategies for everyday life. To this end, the boarding school invited two experts whose workshops made the weekend exciting and varied.

“Communication That Brings Happiness” by Elke Behrendt

“Hi everyone, I’m Elke.” With her approachable manner and her strong, positive presence, Elke Behrendt made an immediate good impression and left people eager to learn more. Elke Behrendt is an independent skills trainer who provides high-quality coaching. She supports companies and individuals very successfully and with a great deal of passion. “With my authenticity, passion, empathy, and experience, I champion the ‘opportunities’ that arise amid constantly changing social and economic conditions. Breaking new ground and encouraging others to do the same is what drives me.”

Elke Behrendt also wants to encourage the students at Steinmühlen: “Being happy is a conscious decision you can make.” With this simple statement, the trainer highlights that a happier life is possible through one’s own positive efforts. In her workshops, she gave the students some amazing tips on how to create a more positive overall situation simply through communication.

“Healthy Snacks That Make You Happy”

Sunday kicked off with a session led by nutritionist Stephanie Hartlieb. She led a workshop in which she first discussed the topic of nutrition and explained which foods can lead to greater well-being and which can lead to less. Theory was followed by practice, and the students made their own healthy snacks that could hold their own against chips and chocolate. Everyone was amazed at how quickly and easily delicious snacks could be prepared.

In addition to the workshops, there were other activities on the topic of happiness, which were well received. In the end, everyone agreed: It was a successful themed weekend that will linger in some people’s minds for a long time to come.
