STEM Campus in Louisenlund: Exciting Days and More Awards for Steinmühlen Teams

Contests & Awards, Life at Boarding School, News, STEM, Talent Development

From June 6 to June 9, a delegation from Steinmühlen traveled to the MINT Campus 2024 in Louisenlund: Maya Fischer (Grade 7), Anna-Lena Griesler (Grade 8), Jonathan Kurz (11th grade), and Fabian Sotonica (12th grade) set off on the long journey to the Baltic Sea with their chaperones, Dr. Jutta Töhl-Borsdorf and Dr. Sven Freibert, where they had the opportunity to enjoy a fantastic program combined with a pleasant atmosphere.

After the project booths were set up for the upcoming fair, the official program kicked off on Friday morning with a keynote talk by Dr. Caroline Rodenbeck from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) on the KATRIN experiment and neutrino mass—a complex topic presented in a clear and accessible way. This was followed by the main event—the fair, where everyone had the opportunity to present their current projects to a jury and the public. The event was divided into three categories: Math/Computer Science/Engineering; Biology/Environmental Sciences; and Physics/Chemistry. The wide range of topics provided ample opportunity for interesting discussions.
Shortly after the fair ended, an evening program began with a pub quiz, where participants had to answer questions from various categories in small groups at their tables. This was a pleasant way to get to know each other better. Afterward, we had time until midnight to chat with other participants outside the “school” setting, which created a relaxed atmosphere.

Workshops and Relaxation

On Saturday, the event began with workshops on various topics, followed by another keynote talk by Prof. Dr. Mira Pöhlker from the Leibniz Institute for Tropospheric Research on the topic of aerosols, and the event concluded with the awards ceremony. In the Biology/Environmental Sciences category, Fabian Sotonica won the prize for his “Boat” project. Maya Fischer and Anna-Lena Griesler received the prize in the Physics/Chemistry category. These were truly great achievements that we were all delighted to celebrate!
Last but not least, even the audience voted for Maya & Anna-Lena, so they can call themselves the “Winners of the Hearts.”

After a brief wrap-up with snacks, the plan was to go sailing as an optional extra activity, but that literally fell through. Unfortunately, due to the weather, this part of the program had to be canceled. Nevertheless, we were able to relax with a few games and snacks and bring our stay at Louisenlund to a close. Over the course of these just under four days, a truly wonderful sense of community developed, and we’re all glad we were there! After saying our goodbyes the next morning, we set off on our journey back to Marburg.

Research on Climate Neutrality: Clara Steiner from Steinmühle Boarding School Succeeds at the 35th MINT Inventors’ Lab

Contests & Awards, Ecology and Sustainability, Life at Boarding School, News, STEM, Talent Development

On a regular basis, exceptionally talented students from schools in Hesse present their research findings on specific topics at the Center for Chemistry’s (ZFC) MINT Inventor Lab. This year, our plusMINT student Clara Steiner was among the group of 16 students who were selected from a total of 237 applicants. Clara, a student at the plus-MINT Steinmühle Boarding School and already a college student majoring in mathematics, spent a week working on the production and analysis of photocatalytically active titanium dioxide layers. According to her, the experience gave her “insights into real research.”

For Clara, the journey to this year’s venue for the 35th Inventors’ Lab wasn’t very far: It took place in cooperation between ZFC and Philipps University in the departments of chemistry and physics on the Lahnberge in Marburg. Four groups of four each focused on different research topics, and Clara was especially looking forward to getting to know her three teammates so she could work with them as a team.

Titanium Dioxide: The All-Purpose Solution of the Future?

The quartet began their presentation of the research project to a predominantly virtual audience with a question: What do sunscreen, wall paint, and solar panels have in common? The answer led to the substance that was the subject of their joint study: titanium dioxide, TiO₂.

The goal was to determine whether this substance might be the “jack-of-all-trades” of the future: a versatile material that is thermally stable, has high coloring and opacity, is lightfast, and is practically insoluble in water. Of these, photocatalysis is arguably the most important property—that is, the ability to trigger chemical reactions through light. All of this explains the use of titanium dioxide in the aforementioned areas. Titanium dioxide is produced by electrolysis, is inexpensive, and is the most important white pigment. The young researchers examined the substance under a scanning electron microscope and focused on the production and analysis of photocatalytically active titanium dioxide layers. Thanks to its properties, the material could potentially contribute to the development of more efficient methods of energy conversion. However, according to Clara and her colleagues, a great deal of research is still needed before that can happen.

“Directly relevant to science”

The event was broadcast on multiple screens. Not only did the team from Steinmühle, led by supervisor Dr. Jutta Töhl-Borsdorf, follow the presentations, but Minister of Culture Armin Schwarz also joined virtually. He praised the participants’ outstanding achievements and described the topics covered in the Inventors’ Lab as “directly relevant to the state’s scientific and economic development.” The minister provided feedback to one of the four groups. The feedback for Clara and her team came from Michael Schmidt (Elkamet Kunststofftechnik). He emphasized that the presentation had excellently illustrated the wide range of applications for titanium dioxide and had also shown just how much fun and enjoyment the group had while conducting their research.

In addition to the technical presentations, the scientific event also offered plenty of entertainment. It wasn’t just the pedal boat ride on the Lahn River—which participants enjoyed during their free time at the research retreat—that was well received. In keeping with the overall theme, during the live broadcast, hosts Joelina Gärtner and Pablo del Rio—both MINTIES themselves—welcomed chemist and science slammer Arne Nisters from TU Darmstadt.

Opening remarks were delivered by Prof. Dr. Sabine Pankuweit, Vice President for Equal Opportunity and Career Development at Philipps University of Marburg; Dr. Thomas Schneidermeier from the event organizer, the Center for Chemistry (ZFC); and Julia Woth from the State Energy Agency (LEA) of Hesse. Videos and Reels were also used to explain how MINTIES work at the ZFC and what they hope to achieve.

Goal: STEM Assessment Competence

ZFC Board Member Dr. Thomas Schneidermeier emphasized how important it is to equip young people with STEM critical thinking skills so they can contextualize media headlines in the context of new technologies. For him and ZFC Project Manager Magdalena Schmitt, it is important to collaborate with schools, universities, companies, associations, foundations, and ministries on STEM projects for students, linking traditional classroom content with career fields in the STEM sector in everyday life. In this way, the ZFC association aims to help ensure a sufficient supply of STEM professionals.

A dozen wins and the Lahn Cup: RuS Steinmühle swept the board at the 112th Giessen Pentecost Regatta

Contests & Awards, Life at Boarding School, News, Rowing, Sports & Health, Talent Development

With no fewer than 12 victories under its belt, the Rudern und Sport Steinmühle club headed home from the 112th Giessen Pentecost Regatta. The concept of this traditional event—with its mix of elite and club sports—once again perfectly aligned with the Steinmühle Rowing Club’s mission to support both competitive and recreational rowing. The fact that Steinmühle’s results in Giessen were so outstanding proved once again: the right people are in the right place here.

Although he is now accustomed to competing on the international stage, Marc Weber decided to race in his home region once again. This return to his roots was well received by the organizers, and as expected, Marc—who has his sights set on an Olympic berth—secured two victories and the Lahn Cup. The RuS Junior A and Junior B competitive rowers also won their respective competitions. Johannes Germano claimed four victories and posted the fastest times in both the Junior B and Junior A competitions. Lilu Schmidt crossed the finish line first a total of five times. The talented Steinmühlen rower also impressed alongside her rowing partner from Eltville, Sofiia Krasnova, in the double sculls. “This duo could have a successful future ahead of them,” predicts Steinmühlen coach Martin “Stromi” Strohmenger.

Great performance by Maurits Juhre

The coach also praised Maurits Juhre’s outstanding performances. Together with Johannes Germano, Maurits—who had already impressed in Munich—posted the fastest times in the single sculls races. Maurits also took to the water with his Frankfurt rowing partner in the “development double,” and did so with phenomenal success: Out of a total of 15 competitors, they posted the fastest time. “Both train in an exemplary manner,” Strohmenger explained, seeing great potential for this boat combination in 2025.

Paula Koch had also signed up for the Pentecost Regatta. However, a last-minute illness put a damper on her plans. Several rowers from the U-15 age group would have competed as well—if they hadn’t been away at a Scout camp.

A united front sends a great message

“All these results are great,” says Coach Strohmenger happily. The coach considers the team spirit and the united front shown by the young athletes to be almost even more important, especially since all of the RuS competitive rowers competed in Giessen.

The next events are already marked on the RuS athletes’ calendars. Marc Weber will next compete at World Cup III in Poznan from June 14 to 16, while Johannes Germano, Lilu Schmidt, Maurits Juhre, and his rowing partner will compete at the 2nd International DRV Junior Regatta in Hamburg from June 1 to 2. The 88th Kassel Rowing Regatta, taking place the same weekend, will serve as the state qualifier for the national competition. There, Leonhardt Germano and Nils Grunwaldt will put their skills to the test.

Perfect weather and high spirits at the 2024 tennis tournament at Steinmühle Boarding School

Life at Boarding School, News, Sports & Health

Tennis matches featuring teams with varying lineups are among the most popular sports activities at Steinmühle Boarding School. The weather was kind to the many participants, and everyone gathered in high spirits on the school’s own tennis court under bright sunshine. After several thrilling matches, a student-teacher team once again claimed victory. Congratulations! Even after the official part of the event, the courts remained busy, as the enthusiasm showed no signs of waning. We’re looking forward to seeing what other matches we’ll get to watch in the coming weeks.

Johannes, Lilu, Maurits: Outstanding Achievements by Young Rowers at Steinmühle

Contests & Awards, Life at Boarding School, News, Rowing, Sports & Health, Talent Development

The young athletes from RuS Steinmühle achieved remarkable success at the regatta hosted by the Offenbach Rowing Club “Undine.” They secured a total of seven victories, four of which were won by Johannes Germano alone. The talented and hard-working rower racked up a total of eight victories of his own.

Another standout performer: Lilu Schmidt. At not even 15 years old, she finished first in three out of four races—and that against a field of 15- and 16-year-olds, and even some 18-year-olds. —What a celebration!

With this regatta performance, the Rudern und Sport (RuS) Steinmühle club came within a hair’s breadth of winning the overall trophy for the day; it missed out by just one point. “Still, we came in second—and that’s among about 30 clubs from all over Hesse and the surrounding area,” says coach Martin Strohmenger happily.

Other athletes from RuS Steinmühle are also currently in contention for top finishes. Notable among them are Leonhardt Germano and Nils Grunwaldt, who competed in the 12/13-year-old age group in Offenbach, narrowly lost in the single and double sculls, respectively, and returned home with valuable regatta experience.

Meanwhile, at the International Junior Regatta in Munich, 17-year-old RuS rising star Maurits Juhre once again demonstrated his skills. At Europe’s largest junior rowing event, the ambitious Steinmühlen rower held his own against a multinational and highly competitive field, finishing with an outstanding 4th place in the B final.

Guys and girls, we’re proud of you!

State Victory at “Jugend Forscht”: Steinmühle’s Plus-MINT Trio Qualifies for the National Finals and Will Compete Against Germany’s Best

Contests & Awards, Life at Boarding School, News, STEM, Talent Development

This is the best “Jugend Forscht” result in Steinmühle’s history: After Steinmühle student Akaash Bhagwat won the state championship in physics at “Schüler experimentieren” (the competition for younger students), the 12th-grade plus-MINT trio—consisting of Luis Gerloni, Fabian Sotonica, and Clara Steiner, also emerged as state champions at the “Jugend forscht” state competition held at Merck in Darmstadt. Originally submitted in the Earth and Space Sciences category, the project ultimately won the award for “Best Interdisciplinary Project” and will now compete in the national competition. “We’ve been participating in ‘Jugend forscht’ for seven years and have always done very well. But we’ve never had a success like this before,” explains their advisor, Dr. Jutta Töhl-Borsdorf.

Luis (16), Clara, and Fabian (both 17) were quite nervous as they had to hold their own among about 50 other projects and ultimately compete against three others in their category. For about half an hour, the jury members—representing research, academia, and industry—asked their questions—and they were on the same level. Under the title “Water Analysis 2.0: Autonomous Low-Cost Boat for Determining Water Quality,” the trio presented their research project. The discussion delved deeply into the subject matter—not a trace of easy questions whose answers would have been obvious. Relieved and almost in disbelief, the students—who participate in the plus-MINT program at the Steinmühle boarding school—heard that they had won—the reward for hours of dedicated tinkering, extensive expertise, endless perseverance, and tremendous interest.

Another criterion: public benefit

The next round—the national competition in Heilbronn—will feature the best German research projects. The young researchers explain in an interview that they’ll have to step it up a notch there. “There are only a few projects in our category, Earth and Space Sciences,” the three acknowledge. But that makes their efforts all the more closely scrutinized by the jury members.

The questions asked there will also focus on other aspects. The jury will assess whether the project is truly the participants’ own—that is, whether they identify with the project’s goals and demonstrate genuine commitment. According to the trio, the project’s benefit to the community is also important. They can wholeheartedly affirm this—because their greatest hope is that their experiment will become a mass-market product for measuring water quality!

The Goal: To Inspire the Industry

A small “surfboard” serves as the basis for the remote-controlled, motorized platform for water analysis developed by Clara Steiner, Fabian Sotonica, and Luis Gerloni. It is not stationary—which sets it apart from many measurement systems. The “boat” can be equipped with various sensors for water analysis, and it can collect up to four water samples.

Inspiring industry and businesses with their idea is therefore the goal of the three plus-MINT talents, who—along with the Steinmühle School and Boarding School—have made it to the top ranks of Germany’s best young researchers. Their vision is a fully autonomous boat capable of navigating currents and saltwater that can be used by anyone, even private individuals, in any location. This would allow water measurements to be taken at a wide variety of locations across the country and transmitted online for analysis. “The result would be a nearly complete picture of the condition of our waterways.”

At the end of May, Luis, Clara, and Fabian will head to Heilbronn for the national “Jugend Forscht” competition. Joining them will be Dr. Jutta Töhl-Borsdorf, a multiple recipient of the Mentor Award. Alongside her are others who have supported the plus-MINT trio on their journey to the top. These include Antje Seel and Dr. Patrick Szabo from the Steinmühlen STEM team. The collaboration with Dr. Christoph Reudenbach from the Department of Geography at Philipps University of Marburg also provided valuable insights and support.

Four first-place finishes and three second-place finishes: A strong start to the season for Maurits Juhre and Johannes Germano

Contests & Awards, Life at Boarding School, News, Rowing, Sports & Health, Talent Development

A great start to the season for our rowers from RuS Steinmühle: Maurits Juhre and Johannes Germano got off to a flying start this weekend at the 52nd Early Season Regatta on Lake Aasee in Münster. Maurits competed four times over 2,000 meters, confidently securing second place three times and finishing third once. Johannes also raced four times, all over a distance of 1,500 meters. The young athlete, who recently joined RuS Steinmühle, won all four races by a wide margin—what a celebration! Coach Martin Strohmenger was impressed: “Both rowers received positive feedback and gained valuable experience this weekend, which will definitely benefit them in their upcoming regattas.” Their next races will take place in two weeks in Offenbach and then in Gießen. — Keep it up, guys! We’re rooting for you!

Enthusiastic About the Mountains: Steinmühle Boarding School’s Ski Trip Is Growing in Popularity

Class Trips, Field Trips, and School Outings, Life at Boarding School, News

Zell am See was the destination for 14 boarding school students in grades 6 through 13 who had signed up for a group ski trip. This was the fourth time the Steinmühle Boarding School had hit the slopes, and Zell am See was a first for them. The description of the accommodations—“a youth hostel right on the lake and just a few minutes from the Schmittenhöhe ski area”—had sounded promising. Suffice it to say, it lived up to expectations!

Accompanied by boarding school teachers Patric Hahn and Nils Schwandt, the group set off for their destination in two Steinmühle buses on the last day of February.

It takes a few hours to get from central Germany to the Pinzgau region in Austria. So they had a döner for dinner, but then it was time to check into their rooms—and soon it was lights out for the Steinmühlen students.

Let’s Go Skiing in the Sun Together

The next morning, a Friday, after breakfast at the youth hostel, the plan was to rent skis and pick up our ski passes. Then we took the AreitXPress gondola up to the Schmittenhöhe ski area. — What’s everyone’s skill level on the slopes? Who goes in which group? To figure that out and assign everyone to a group, we all took a test run together. In sunny weather, the Steinmühlen team hit the slopes.

Of course, exercising in the fresh air soon made everyone hungry. And despite being warned about the steep prices, the students ordered a midday snack. The delicious meal turned out to be a really expensive surprise for many, so that by the second day of skiing, most of them decided to take advantage of the free packed lunch offer after all.

Back at the hostel, dinner and group games were on the agenda later that evening. Favorites included “Lügenmäxchen” and the good old game “Mensch ärgere dich nicht.” Everyone also realized that they had a lot to share with one another!

Waltz or drive in reverse

The next day, Saturday, the group encountered mixed weather. The plan for the day was to head to the neighboring Kaprun glacier ski area. There, they tried their first jumps in the snow park. Other students were given special tasks by Patric: waltzing on skis, skiing backward—or a lesson in carving, true to the motto: “Skiing is all about turning.”

In the afternoon, the weather became very stormy, and the Kitzsteinhorn ski resort was closed before the end of its regular daily operating hours. — This was a unique experience for some participants, who had never before seen this measure become necessary. On Saturday evening, games were once again on the agenda.

The weather can change quickly in the mountains—and so, the next day, Sunday, the blue sky was shining again! We headed back to the Kaprun glacier ski area, and at the end of the day on the slopes, the group enjoyed a little “après-ski” in the sun. The evening was once again spent playing games in the common room—not a trace of boredom!

Everyone wanted to stay a little longer

The young people were so taken with the slopes in the glacier area that they were back there again on Monday morning. Unfortunately, they then had to return the rented equipment and get changed—it was time to head back to Marburg.

The ski trip to Austria was a complete success: rustic accommodations, good and hearty food, snow, and great weather. There was only one reason why everyone was sad when it came to an end: the students from the Steinmühle boarding school would have loved to stay one more day.

So the motto for the trip ended up being “With a little room to grow.” That applied to the game “Lügenmäxchen,” it applied to skiing—and it certainly applied to the length of our stay as well.

Sustainability at the Steinmühle – A Report on a Themed Weekend

Ecology and Sustainability, Life at Boarding School, News

Themed weekends have now become an integral part of daily life at the boarding school. The educational team regularly organizes weekends during which the students engage in thoughtful exploration of topics such as physical and mental health, media education, and sustainable living. These weekends are characterized above all by real-life activities that allow students to gain new experiences and put them into practice.

Before the Christmas break, another weekend focused on sustainability was on the agenda. At a joint kickoff event in the dining hall, the entire boarding school community first had the chance to test their own knowledge and compete against each other in a Kahoot quiz, with questions covering various aspects of sustainability that clearly challenged everyone in the room. For example, did you know that coffee production uses more water than beef or a cotton shirt? Students were also actively participating in the quiz via Instagram Stories.

Throughout the rest of the weekend, the young people were able to participate in a variety of activities. During the planning phase, a conscious effort was made to cover as many different areas of life as possible in order to promote well-rounded experiences. The students also had the opportunity to get hands-on. For example, one group got together to make various natural cosmetics. This not only allowed them to give free rein to their creativity but, above all, to focus on producing everyday products with as little packaging as possible. The scented soaps and hand creams are also perfect for the cold season. Perhaps a Christmas gift or two was even created during this activity.

For the upcycling club, the young people brought fabric scraps and old clothes from their weekends at home, which were then used to sew pencil cases. While some were already true pros at the sewing machine, others were able to gain their first experience with it. It was nice to see the finished products pop up again and again in everyday life.

Another group worked on building a bench, which was set up in the schoolyard and will be used as a place to rest during breaks. The students were able to put their craftsmanship skills to the test while also making a positive contribution to the entire school and boarding school community.

The Birdhouse Club was also hard at work. Here, they built cozy shelters for the birds that stay in Germany through the winter instead of flying south to warmer climates.

As was the case last year, visitors had the opportunity to walk on the roof of the Steinmühle, which has been generating sustainable electricity for its own use via photovoltaic systems for several years now. An outside expert from Sonneninitiative e.V. explained to the young people how energy is generated using solar power.

A Steinmühlen bus set off for the Birkenhof educational center. There, the tour group spent a day on a farm. First, they picked fresh grass and fed it to the horses and cows. Some even dared to gently stroke the cows’ horns. A wooden replica of a cow gave them the chance to try their hand at milking. This experience also provided an opportunity to reflect on their own interactions with farm animals. “Now I’m imagining how the cows do that to us!” remarked one student when the topic of slaughter came up.

After visiting the chickens as well, it was time to harvest the vegetables for dinner. Once the dough for the bread on a stick had been prepared, we were able to continue enjoying the evening by a cozy campfire and the cauldron in which the soup was simmering.

The vegetables brought back from the farm were used the very next day to supply the cooking club with ingredients. Divided into several groups, the students prepared vegetable soup throughout the grounds.

On Sunday evening, the boarding school wrapped up the weekend with a group barbecue. Thanks to the nice weather, most of the boarding school community stayed out in the schoolyard a little longer, chatting and sharing their experiences from the past few days.

As part of this themed weekend, activities were organized that were enjoyable for all young people while also sparking sustainable processes to reflect on their own lifestyles and take advantage of opportunities to integrate sustainability into their daily lives.
