Students at Steinmühlen School Raise More Than 1,000 Euros for Refugee Children in Marburg

Archive, News

Students at Steinmühle raised 1,135 euros for refugee children in Marburg through a charity flea market and a fundraising appeal held during parent-teacher conferences. The money was presented to the organization “Vielfalt Marburg e.V.” on January 27 at the “Portal Gisselberg.”

Last fall, students from several different groups came up with the idea of using this spirit of generosity to support refugee children in Marburg, and the plan was a complete success.

The members of the Children’s and Youth Parliament, the Student Council, and the Interact Club joined forces to organize a “charity flea market” on Parents’ Day: All students were asked to bring games, CDs, books, or other items from home and offer them for sale to their classmates in the school hallways. In the afternoon, guests at the parent-teacher-student conference were also asked to make donations. The organizers were quite surprised when, by the end of the day, they had raised €1,135.

In consultation with Ms. Fleck-Delnavaz from the Coordination Office for Refugee Affairs in Marburg, the money was donated to the organization “Vielfalt Marburg e.V.” to support refugee children in Marburg. During the donation ceremony at “Portal-Gisselberg,” the newly opened refugee center in Marburg, students from Steinmühle were able to see for themselves how their donation would be used: toys are just as necessary as learning materials. Ms. Fleck-Delnavaz was visibly pleased with the students’ commitment and thanked them for their generous donation.

For the first time: Open Stage at the Steinmühle

Archive, News

Did the Steinmühle’s already rich cultural program really need yet another event? After the first Open Stage event on January 26, 2016, it was clear to all visitors and participants: absolutely! The audience enjoyed a total of 17 performances.

And it was a varied program: Following the lively opening performance by the “Swing and Sing” club, featuring students from grades 5 and 7, there were—in no particular order—nine vocal numbers and seven solo instrumental performances, with all the performers receiving long, sustained applause. The singers were skillfully and sensitively accompanied by pianist Olaf Roth.

Among the many excellent performances, there was once again something particularly noteworthy: the confidence with which Nelly Endres (piano), Tom Herfert (saxophone), and Johanna Sodmann (piano) played their instruments, and the skillful way in which Maria Theresa Alves Hengstl performed both on the harp and with her singing voice.

The musical highlight was undoubtedly Bodam Lee ’s violin performance, which would go on to earn her a perfect score of 25 out of 25 at the regional round of “Jugend musiziert” a few days later. As a special treat, there was also a remarkable joint performance with Marco Lüddecke (piano), during which our boarding school counselor revealed himself to be a composer.

And then, the emotional climax at the very end: Mohamad Saboor Tajik, our Afghan student, rapped “A Few Words About Afghanistan,” expressing his concern for his homeland and his personal feelings.

Educational Evening with Achim Schad

Archive, News
How Parents Become a Dream Team—the Couples and family therapist Achim Schad gave a talk at the Steinmühle Forum

How can relationships in partnerships, families, and schools be successful in the long term? The answer to this question—which is so important for our personal well-being and academic success—was the focus of an interesting and humorous lecture by renowned couples and family therapist Achim Schad at Steinmühle High School.

“To break the negative cycle, the ratio of positive relationship messages to negative relationship messages must be 5 to 1.”
Achim Schad concluded his insightful and entertaining lecture at the Steinmühle with this formula for sustainable relationships. About 200 parents and colleagues attended the educational evening at the Forum and were thoroughly impressed by the engaging presentation given by the couples and family therapist from Wuppertal.

Going to a lecture titled “How Can Parents Become a Dream Team in Raising Their Children?” isn’t exactly easy, since it might imply that one’s own parenting isn’t exactly going smoothly. “Thank goodness there are still plenty of friends and neighbors from whom you can pick up a tip or two,” Achim Schad remarked with a wink.

Within just a few minutes, it became clear just how much experience the speaker brought to the table from his 35 years as a therapist and counselor. Using numerous examples from his work with families and couples—and always without a preachy tone—he presented team rules that can help a group become or remain a team. Ultimately, he said, it isn’t important for parents to raise their children the same way or always agree. What matters is that one parent’s instructions are accepted by the other and not corrected. Schad gave examples of “good and bad alliances.” The child and one parent should never side against the other parent. “That always goes wrong,” Achim Schad asserted. “However, if your child thinks your clear, shared stance on limiting video game time is silly, you can take that as a compliment for your good parenting.” Given the inherent differences between men and women, it’s not always easy to find a clear middle ground. “If you can’t agree at all, then define who’s in charge. On even-numbered days of the month, one parent decides; on odd-numbered days, the other,” Schad recommended. The speaker encouraged the parents in attendance with examples from his own parenting experience, in which things didn’t always go smoothly either.

In closing, Achim Schad expanded on the concept of the “dream team”: “The school and the teachers are part of it, too.” He said it’s a no-go when parents and children team up against a teacher. Schad couldn’t recall a single instance in his more than thirty years of experience where this kind of alliance had led to success. “A respectful approach and harmonious cooperation among parents, students, and teachers are prerequisites for a positive learning environment and academic success,” emphasized Achim Schad, who described Steinmühle as a “model school” in this regard. And with that, he encouraged Steinmühle to continue placing special emphasis on good relationships between students, parents, and teachers in its educational work.

Chance 2016 – International Students Visit the Education Fair in Giessen

Archive, News

Under the motto “Shape Your Own Future!”, the annual “Chance” fair offers information on career guidance, vocational training, continuing education, and college.

This year, the trade show coincided with a “home-visit weekend” (Note: Every 14 days, the German students travel home with their families; the international students stay at Steinmühle and receive individual support). The international students took advantage of this welcome opportunity and visited the exhibition halls in Gießen.

Together, they explored the exhibition halls with their hundreds of exhibitors and gathered a lot of interesting information. Their interests varied widely. While some focused on volunteer and social work, others were more interested in mechanical engineering and engineering in general. Their bags quickly filled up with informational brochures, flyers, and small gifts.

After this successful afternoon, everyone had plenty of informational materials and was brimming with new ideas for the future.

Students Sent Off on Christmas Break

Archive, News

Because their teachers were attending a professional development workshop on December 21 and 22, the students were dismissed for winter break on December 18. Most classes and courses had held Christmas parties—with or without Secret Santa —during the last week of school, but on the final day of classes, everyone got into the Christmas spirit one last time:

While the 5th and 6th-grade classes watched the Hessian State Theater’s “Christmas play, ” *Beauty and the Beast*, the middle and upper school classes gathered in the Forum during the third period for a Christmas celebration.

In their brief remarks, the principals once again highlighted the highlights and special moments of the past few months and looked forward with optimism to the coming year, 2016. There was a big round of applause from the entire school for the students in Class 9i, who, as unaccompanied minor refugees, have been part of the school community since October 2015.

With “I Want You Back” and “All I Want for X-mas,” the StoneMill house band showed off its festive side—much to the delight of all the students, who enthusiastically demanded an encore.

Dr. Pätzold and Mr. Jöllenbeck are saying goodbye to the faculty at Steinmühle

Archive, News

The outgoing board of the school association bid farewell to all staff members during the faculty’s Christmas party. In his speech, Dr. Pätzold reflected on the events that had left a particular impression on him, including the story of helping refugees escape, the construction of the Centrum and Forum, and difficult structural and personnel decisions. He expressly praised the contributions of Mr. Jöllenbeck, his deputy, and Mr. Jäger, the long-time executive director.

On behalf of the school administration, Mr. Gemmer expressed words of thanks to the outgoing board, along with the hope that the school community would have another opportunity to bid a fitting farewell to its long-serving board in a different setting.

In brief remarks, Ms. Opper and Ms. Rabben-Martin highlighted a significant event at the start of the new year: Mr. Nauheimer’s retirement and his farewell party in February 2016.

Afterward, the physics and geography student councils entertained the crowd with a varied program and hands-on experiments. Once again, a gratifyingly large number of former colleagues attended the traditional Christmas party.

Student Profile: “Diya Ai from Nanjing”

Archive, News

Diya Ai from Nanjing, China, attended a German language course at the Humboldt Institute for about four months before starting at Steinmühle. There, she went by the name Andrea, a name by which many of her classmates here also know her.

Andrea has been living at the Steinmühle boarding school in the “Westfalenhaus” since early September. In a conversation with the new boarding school director, Jochen Eisold, she describes her first impressions of Germany.

She noticed that most Germans weren’t as strict as she had thought, that people here have a relatively large amount of free time, and that not everything is so fast-paced and hectic. “In China, you always have to work a lot.”

At first, she found it strange that they had sparkling water here—which she didn’t like—and that people ate so much bread. In China, she had hot meals three times a day. The fact that “everything is closed on Sundays” here was also a completely new experience.

Diya (Andrea) immediately liked the bus system, which was designed to accommodate older adults and people in wheelchairs.

Andrea describes the way of learning in Germany as a unique experience. While school in China typically goes until 5:00 p.m., here you have to organize part of your time on your own. As an example, she mentions the support provided by the boarding school’s study center. There, students can partially manage their own schedules to take responsibility for their own learning process. As a student, she plays a major role in shaping the content of this support by defining her educational priorities and individual needs, which are then coordinated through the study center with subject teachers as well as the newly established support program during vacations and on weekends. “This was a completely new experience for me,” says Diya.

In particular, Diya had to adjust to the way lessons are taught at Steinmühle. Diya: “At school in China, things are first taught using a textbook. They explain to you what something is and how it works. Then comes practice, practice, practice… Here at Steinmühle, you learn much more through hands-on experience. Under guidance, you search for answers to questions on your own or in groups, and together you gradually work out the solutions. I have to get used to that first.”

“This account shows that the boarding school faces additional challenges as it welcomes international students. The boarding school staff—especially the house directors—are tackling this task with great dedication!” says boarding school director Jochen Eisold with enthusiasm.

Andrea is also familiar with the upcoming Christmas celebrations from her time in China. There, too, people decorate their windows and families get together. However, the main focus is on shopping together. The Chinese New Year at the end of January most closely resembles our Christmas. Along with the “Mid-Autumn Festival,” this is the traditional family celebration, during which people also exchange gifts.

The boarding school community is really looking forward to these celebrations and is excited to celebrate them together at the Steinmühle boarding school.

Steinmühlen Boarding School Expands Its Care Program

Archive, News

Since the 2015–2016 school year, the Steinmühle boarding school has allowed international students to stay at the boarding school during the weekends when they would normally travel home. The boarding school is also open to this group during the Easter and fall breaks. A new position was created within the boarding school’s educational team to provide additional support.

Steinmühle has been welcoming international students for many years. They attend classes alongside German students and spend their free time together. As an educational institution, Steinmühle has great ambitions to further open itself up to internationalization. The educational approach aims to optimally prepare Steinmühle students for an independent life in the future. At universities and in the professional world, young people encounter many different nationalities and need the appropriate intercultural skills to communicate with people from other cultures and work closely with them. It is therefore important that students learn and practice intercultural collaboration as part of their daily school and boarding school life.

In the past, Steinmühle Boarding School has had very positive experiences with the integration of international students. For everyone involved, this cultural exchange is both enriching and challenging. When selecting countries, the boarding school is open to students from all nations. Currently, Steinmühle has students from countries including Russia, China, Korea, France, Poland, and Switzerland.

If you are interested in an international boarding school spot, please contact the admissions office at Steinmühlen Boarding School.

2015 Winter Concert

Archive, News

There was a mix of old and new, including both classical and popular music. And Christmas carols were sung as well. It really had a little bit of everything, and the many visitors to the event were thrilled.

The Chamber Music Club, led by F. Wemme, set the first festive tone of the evening with two jazzy arrangements of Christmas carols.

The WU Lieder, conducted by Mr. Wever, evoked the “Oriental Wave” of the early 1960s with their performances, and since the lyrics of “Oh Mustapha” and “Cafe Oriental” hardly meet today’s standards of political correctness, they were given an ironic twist and translated into Persian—much to the audience’s delight.

Chamber music enthusiasts were treated to two groups: first, the Saxophone Quartet featuring Ms. Sturm von der Ahe, which performed Renaissance pieces and Christmas carols; and second, the Tango Trio featuring the Verweyen siblings. The trio took on quite a challenge with two pieces by Astor Piazzolla, but they mastered the task with ease.

In the end, the high school choir provided a rousing finale. A major part of the choir’s inspiring performance was due to its tireless motivator (choir director) D. Sans and the accompanying band featuring Frank Wemme (electric bass and electric guitar), Olaf Roth (keyboard), and Arthur Laux (drums). From “Killing Me Softly” to “Radio Gaga” to “Supergirl,” the set list offered something to delight the hearts of both the young and the young at heart.
