The Friends Association Provides Support for Major Purchases

Archive, News

For the school, the gift-giving had already taken place before Christmas: On December 9, 2015, the Friends of the School Association, led by Ms. Weidenbach, presented the school principals with important equipment and instruments.

Two new high-tech “Epson Finger Touch Interactive Projectors” were purchased for the school’s general equipment. The new ultra-short-throw projector offers the ultimate in interactivity with its finger-touch function and support for two pens. The device offers high white and color brightness of 3,300 lumens and WXGA resolution. With the ultra-wide-angle lens, you no longer have to worry about shadows or glare when projecting large images from a very short distance.

The music department received 24 new mini bagpipes (“Beginner’s Flute Sets”) and two euphoniums for the wind instrument classes.

The school would like to thank the Friends of the School Association, which welcomes new members and donations.

Steinmühle School Association with a New Board of Directors

Archive, News

After a long and successful tenure, the board of the school association had announced its retirement. The chairman, Dr. Gerhard Pätzold, had steered the school’s fortunes for 38 years with a steady hand and great dedication. For many years, he did so alongside the vice-chairman, Mr. Dieter Jöllenbeck, who had introduced the all-day school program at Steinmühle as its principal in the 1970s and served for many years as director of the Marburg State School Board.

On December 7, 2015, the general meeting elected the new board of directors. Mr. Egon Vaupel was elected chairman. Mr. Vaupel served as mayor of the city of Marburg for eight years and as mayor for ten years. Mr. Gerhard Müller was elected as his deputy; he is very familiar with the Steinmühle, having held various positions on the school’s administration board there until 1995.

The school community welcomes the new leadership and, together with the two newly elected officials, hopes for continued success and smooth sailing.

Aspects of Good Schools in Hesse — Klaus Heiner Weber to Speak at Steinmühle on November 24

Archive, News

On November 24, 2015, Mr. Klaus Heiner Weber was a guest at an expanded school administration meeting. The school administration had two expectations of Mr. Weber, who had served as a school inspector in Hesse for many years: first, he was to help place Steinmühle in the context of high-performing schools in Hesse and provide criteria for doing so; second, as an experienced school inspector, he was expected to highlight evaluation options. The school administration was interested in hearing from him, based on his experience, about where schools’ instructional qualities are particularly recognized and where they are still needed to a greater extent—as well as where the possibilities and limitations of internal and external evaluation lie.

To get right to the point: Mr. Weber’s remarks were quite helpful for the school, and it was certainly an advantage that the Steinmühle was not unfamiliar territory to him, since his wife, Prof. Dr. Karin Bräu, had worked there as a biology and art teacher in the 1990s.

In his remarks, Mr. Weber repeatedly referred to three criteria for good schools that he has come to regard as indispensable over the years: the quality of school leadership, the commitment to following through on agreements within the school, and how the school handles diversity.

The Flexible 10th Grade – Also for New Students Entering 10th Grade in the 2016–17 School Year

Archive, News

With its elective model, Steinmühle is the only school in the Marburg-Biedenkopf district to offer both the G9 and G8 tracks. A key feature of the model is the flexible 10th grade for G9 students, which will be implemented for the first time in the 2016–17 school year. We plan to organize this flexible 10th grade into four classes instead of three in order to create capacity for students from other schools. Below, we’ll introduce you to this special grade level:

The period from the 2016 summer break to the 2017 Easter break …

… regular subject instruction takes place in nearly all academic subjects. The content specified by the Hessian curriculum is taught in the traditional Steinmühlen style—which is highly collaborative and promotes self-efficacy among our students. Most classes are held with the entire class; the second foreign language, religion and ethics, the arts subject, elective courses, and bilingual instruction are, as before, organized into parallel courses based on student selection.

From the 2017 Easter break through the 2017 summer break …

… the students can choose between:

  1. a stay abroad (language course or exchange program),
  2. a social or professional internship,
  3. or a class at the Steinmühle on the topic “Ready for High School.”

Re: a) Stay Abroad

Steinmühle has established partnerships with well-known and established providers of language travel programs and youth exchange programs. In addition to language acquisition, the goal of these stays abroad is always to strengthen personal skills such as self-confidence, independence, communication skills, and perseverance. If you are interested, please consult with Principal Björn Gemmer.

Re: b) Internship

School-based internships (social internship in 8th grade, workplace internship in 9th grade) are often considered too short to provide a genuine insight into a career field. With a timeframe of three to four months, however, the situation is different. Over this period, interns can refine or rule out their career aspirations, become valuable contributors to a company, and set the stage for long-term employment as summer workers or participants in a dual study program. Since this program requires a long-term leave of absence from classes, it must be closely coordinated with the school administration.

Regarding c) “Ready for High School”

The “Ready for High School” course involves small learning groups and focuses on reviewing key material from middle school—especially in those subjects where the pressure to advance is greatest, that is, in the core subjects, the natural sciences, and in elective subjects that cannot be dropped or are frequently chosen as exam subjects for the Abitur. In this way, we aim to ease the transition into the upper secondary level of the Gymnasium and lay a solid foundation for the most successful Abitur possible.

Students in our current 9a, 9b, and 9c classes will have the opportunity to transfer to the new 10d class. This would allow them to be part of an even smaller class than before and receive even more personalized academic support.

We welcome students from other schools! Students currently in the ninth grade at a G8 high school are welcome to join our flexible 10th-grade class and thus transition to the G9 system. Students in ninth grade at comprehensive schools may also transfer to Steinmühle (provided they meet the academic requirements for a Gymnasium). They should contact us and schedule an introductory meeting to consult with one of Steinmühle’s two principals.

After the tenth grade, all students who are promoted to the 11th grade are granted equivalence to the intermediate school diploma (Realschulabschluss).

Students continue their academic journey in the introductory phase (11th grade) of our specialized upper school program. You can find more information on our website, request brochures from the school office, or learn more about the specialized upper school program and the wide range of advanced courses (including sports and art) during a personal consultation.

Cultural Evening 2015

Archive, News

This year’s Cultural Evening took place on November 26. It featured a particularly varied program this year.

There was a radio play—by Ms. Fries’s 7th-grade class—self-written autumn poems illustrated with projected shadow puppets—also by Ms. Fries’s 7th-grade class—and a theater trailer—by Mr. Ullwer’s Q1 class—which offered a preview of an exciting performance coming this spring. Ms. Hohm’s bili 8 history class presented, in a very creative and humorous way, how Columbus came to discover America, Dr. Töhl-Borsdorf’s advanced chemistry class presented the story of Count Zeppelin both as a theatrical scene and as a scientific experiment complete with lots of noise and smoke, and two students from the current 9th grade class 9a, Sina Jeck and Janina Seip, presented an impressive video they had produced with great dedication last school year as part of an English project on racial discrimination in the U.S. under Ms. Wassum’s guidance. To round off the evening, the German honors class, led by Mr. Wagler, demonstrated how to imagine the dance that Goethe describes with great expertise in his epistolary novel *Werther* in a letter dated June 16. Also worth highlighting here are the outstanding musical performances of the evening, both of which were organized entirely by the students themselves: the band made up of students from Class 7b and the duo Alissa Thomas and Noah Herrmann. Both performances enchanted the audience and leave us hoping for a reunion—and the chance to hear them again—soon.

And we shouldn’t forget to mention the outstanding work of the technicians from “Sound and Light,” who probably broke a sweat a few times that evening.

2015 Sports Badge

Archive, News

Last year, 141 students and 2 teachers met the requirements for the “German Sports Badge.”

Anyone who wants to earn this badge of honor must earn points in the following categories:
1. Demonstrate swimming ability
2. Endurance: e.g., 800m/3000m run
3. Strength: e.g., ball throw, shot put, standing long jump
4. Speed: e.g., 50m or 100m run, 25m swim
5. Coordination: e.g., long jump, high jump, Schleuderball

Depending on performance, each category is awarded 1, 2, or 3 points.
If you score 2–5 in the four categories—for a total of 4–7 points—you receive the bronze sports badge; for 8–10 points, you receive the silver badge; and for 11 or 12 points, you receive the highest award, the gold badge.

In 2015, 26 bronze, 70 silver, and 48 gold badges were awarded at Steinmühle—a truly remarkable achievement! Particularly noteworthy is the achievement of Mr. Schubert, who succeeded for the seventh consecutive year and earned the gold sports badge in each of the past three rounds.

Congratulations!

“Velociped Bike Tours” is donating bicycles to young refugees, and “Sanitätshaus Kaphingst” is providing safe helmets

Archive, News

On October 19, the fifteen unaccompanied minor refugees arrived at Steinmühle, accompanied by representatives from the youth welfare offices in Marburg and Frankfurt, as well as interpreters. The initial conversations focused on getting to know their new home and the staff there. The staff asked about the needs and wishes of the new Steinmühle students and were surprised to hear very soon: “A bike—that would be great!”

However, funding from the Youth Welfare Office did not seem possible. Fortunately, Principal Gemmer recalled the support and willingness to help shown by the Steinmühlen parents and launched a fundraising appeal via email.

It didn’t take long for the first positive responses to come in, once again confirming the great willingness of the Steinmühle parents to help. While the school administration gratefully accepted a few helmets and children’s bicycles donated by parents for the two 12-year-old students, an exceptionally generous offer from outside the school brought joy:

The company “Velociped Fahrradreisen” promised to donate 13 refurbished touring bikes that looked as good as new.

And Ms. Suntheim-Pichler promised to provide bicycle helmets on behalf of“Kaphingst.”

On November 5, 2015, Mr. Christian Rhode arrived at the Steinmühle schoolyard with his Velociped crew and 13 touring bikes. The bikes had been inspected at the workshop and fully refurbished. They were labeled with names, and the seat height and handlebar adjustment had already been customized for their future riders. Locks had also been provided.

After a few brief words of greeting and thanks, the bicycles found their young owners, who were delighted with their brand-new-looking bikes and immediately began getting to know them.

Road safety was also taken care of: Ms. Suntheim-Pichler from Kaphingst provided all new students with high-quality bicycle helmets, and Mr. Korbmacher from the Marburg Traffic Police invited them to a bicycle safety training session at the Großsportfeld facility.

Steinmühlen – Soccer Tournament on November 13 2015

Archive, News

This year’s Steinmühlen Soccer Tournament was held for the first time under a new format. The seven participating teams—comprising students from the day school (grades 8–12) and teachers, as well as students from the boarding school and their counselors—were grouped together by random draw before the tournament began. As a result, the field of participants was much more balanced than in previous years.

In a friendly and fair atmosphere, the games were played at the highest technical level. Many matches remained exciting right up to the end. In the first semifinal, for example, “Team Kurt” prevailed only narrowly in a penalty shootout. In the end, “FC Siewillja” emerged as the tournament champion with a well-deserved 3–1 victory over “Team Kurt.”
Given this year’s positive experience, this approach will be continued next year as well.

The teams’ rankings:

FC Siewillja 1st Place (Jannis Borsdorf, Hanibal, Jonathan Koreng, Marvin Peljord, Zahid, Sascha Huhn, Ella Herboth)
Team Kurt 2nd place (Maxi Lotz, Jakob Reinhard, Nils Blessing, Marc Miran, Max Bräuer, Morteza)
Puzzles 3rd place (Nils Schwand, Finn Busmann, Jannik Anfang, Philipp Schwarz, Tim Brunet, Nils Rupp, Cecilie Arroyo)
The “Hit It” Gang 4th place (Leon Sauer, Laurenz Haarmann, Luca Bode, Thomas Korte, Jonathan Wulf, Michael Hermens)
Basti’s Long Lumps Eliminated in the preliminary round (Achim Bauer, Basti Loh, Patrick Hahn, Ahmet Peker, Mirko Radatz, Dirk Lange)

The new wind instrument class is already hard at work

Archive, News

Once again, the music department didn’t really have to worry about getting a wind instrument class off the ground for this fifth-grade class. In September, the instruments were handed out, and by now everyone has had a chance to get familiar with them. During the first “orchestra rehearsals” with Ms. Wilmsmeyer, the first melodious notes were already heard, suggesting that the first piece will soon be mastered. 01_6766 (FILEminimizer) 02_6769 (FILEminimizer) 03_6770 (FILEminimizer) 04_6771 (FILEminimizer) 05_6763 (FILEminimizer)

High level of interest at the information sessions for future 5th graders

Archive, News

Steinmühle had invited people to information sessions in early November, which generated a great deal of interest. At the information session on November 4, the school administration presented the structure of Steinmühle to interested parents and provided details about its unique features.

On November 7, parents and children were given a tour of the school as part of an open house. Students presented interesting experiments from their science classes, took part in a unique physical activity program, had the chance to try their hand at pottery, and watched the 6th-grade wind ensemble perform, while their parents spoke with the school’s parent representatives to learn firsthand about their experiences at Steinmühle.
