Former student Vincent Haiges works as a war correspondent

Collaborations & Partnerships, Former Students & Alumni, News, Politics, Business & Responsibility

Images of bombed-out houses, scenes of war, dust, rubble, and ash: The images of Iraq shown on the news are authentic, but they don’t tell the whole story. This country—which is actually rich yet plagued by extreme poverty—has other facets as well. Selfies, hookah, bike races, pool, and excessive drinking under one of Baghdad’s Tigris bridges, where young men gather at night. At night, “at a bearable 35 degrees,” as Vincent Haiges says. People’s lives take place outdoors.

The former student at the Steinmühle boarding school lived in Iraq for two years—first in the north, then in the capital. He also visits other crisis-stricken areas—to touch on sensitive issues, to contribute to global transparency, and to get to know other perspectives. To provide a more complete picture, offer explanations, and share knowledge.

“Freedom comes with responsibility”

After graduating from high school, Haiges went on his first trip; at age 21, he arrived in Morocco. “Tell me about Germany,” he can still hear Mustafa say today. That was the moment Haiges began to become aware of global inequality. But what was he to do with that realization? he asked himself.

He realized that freedom comes with responsibility. Vincent Haiges began his studies in Vienna and London, focusing on conflict studies and international law.

He graduated from the university with a master’s degree in political science. His drive to seek out the world’s hotspots, capture the events through photography, and present them has remained undiminished.

This works well through images, and his documentaries resonate with audiences. A high-profile group of clients in the media sector is interested in what Vincent Haiges brings back to the safety of Central Europe: *Der Spiegel*, Deutsche Welle, *Die Zeit*, and the Goethe-Institut. But foreign publications are also interested: from Japan, Switzerland, and even Al Jazeera. Vincent Haiges also documents events in crisis zones for the UN.

“They were wearing masks— not because of COVID-19″

When the reporter talks about excessive drinking under the Tigris Bridge, he does not intend to downplay the violence and terror in the country. His visit to a maximum-security prison in Mosul, northern Iraq, remains his worst memory. According to Haiges, photos were able to capture what was happening there. “You could see people wearing masks.” “…But not because of COVID-19, but because of the smell of corpses.”

Over time, these experiences have instilled a certain humility in the reporter. Not everyone is cut out to be a crisis reporter, even if they can write or take photographs. It takes the ability to connect with people, a clear willingness to adapt, and a genuine desire to be one of them—at least temporarily. Vincent Haiges learned Arabic and always works with a female colleague who conducts on-site interviews with women—due to the social role of Iraqi women. In their presence, a foreign man is taboo, let alone as an interview subject. Nevertheless, bringing in a local producer and translator—a so-called “fixer”—is a necessity. It’s a system—albeit a manageable one—that must be organized and made to function.

“Let’s not get too at once”

During the lecture at the Steinmühle, Haiges is asked if he ever burns out. He finds peace during necessary breaks at his apartment in Berlin-Kreuzberg—a place whose very name instills respect in many people from the provinces. Some ways to maintain strength and energy are time-honored but still effective, says Haiges: taking breaks, not trying to do too much at once, eating well and sleeping well, and exercising.

His invisible adversary: post-traumatic stress disorder.

Vincent Haiges, born in 1988, still remembers rowing coach Martin Strohmenger as the head of his boarding house. Memories linger on both sides, though their priorities are certainly different today. While the Steinmühlen community began the new year quietly amid the ongoing lockdown, Haiges was preparing for his next mission in January. This time, it was in Europe—Bosnia, near the Croatian border.

He was asked if he would be ready again so soon, and his answer was clear: “Believe in what you’re doing. It’s the most important factor in resilience.”

(Vincent Haiges gave the presentation in December to 13th-grade students, in compliance with pandemic-related regulations. The event was organized by Bernd Hülsbeck, a teacher of politics, economics, and history at Steinmühle.)

“The Marburg Night Watchman”: An entertaining evening with Wilhelm “Willi” Stehling

Former Students & Alumni, News, Politics, Business & Responsibility

Former Steinmühle teachers often return to their old workplace: to have coffee, chat, and see what’s changed. It’s rather rare for them to invite the forum to a reading as an author. Wilhelm Stehling, who has been retired since February 2014, did just that. He presented his book, *Die Marburger Nachtwächter* (The Marburg Night Watchmen), at the Steinmühle. The audience was thrilled.

“The hall was full—or what you’d call ‘full’ under the current restrictions,” reports Principal Björn Gemmer. The audience had a good time as “Willi” Stehling provided entertaining insights into the rough-and-tumble world of night watchmen. It’s a profession that’s often ridiculed, but in reality, the hardships involved are underestimated, and the job is associated with numerous anecdotes.

So anyone who wants to know more about the Marburg night watchmen—when they were active and what happened to them—will find the answers in Willi Stehling’s book, available from Büchner-Verlag. Perhaps while reading, some of you will recall not only Wilhelm Stehling’s classes in geography, physical education, and music, but also his Grade 5 choir, the brass band, swimming lessons, and much more.

Music “made in Steinmühle”: Philipp Stauzebach and his band Juno17 recorded a new album at the Forum

Art, Music & Theater, Former Students & Alumni, News

The German band “JUNO17” took advantage of the fact that schools were closed for the weekend to record parts of their new album at the Steinmühle Forum.

This extraordinary lineup has a history. The band, which has a large following on all social media platforms, has been around since 2015. Its members are Philipp Hofmann (vocals), Philipp Stauzebach (guitar), Joscha Mengel (bass), and Sebastian Schmitt (drums). Guitarist Philipp Stauzebach, from Marburg, was a student at Steinmühle himself. He graduated from high school here 13 years ago.

In 2016, the group celebrated its TV success in Germany when it provided the theme song for the season of *Celebrity Big Brother* with its song “Rebellen.” Since then, the musicians have been active primarily in Russia. There, they have built up a large fan base and have become an integral part of well-known music shows and the lineups of major festivals. With their cover version of the old Russian anti-war song “Beri Shinel, poshli damoy”—originally by Bulat Okudzhava—they performed on Victory Day in May 2019 (May 9), and have been traveling to Russia 5–6 times a year ever since. “We’re all working hard to learn Russian,” said singer Philipp Hofmann when asked how he and his colleagues were getting along with communication. “But we’re not quite there yet.”

Guitarist Philipp Stauzebach from Marburg still raves about the musical support he always received at the Steinmühle. He has remained in touch with his former school—especially with principal Björn Gemmer—to this day, and the sound of the Forum was one of the reasons Stauzebach chose to record parts of his new album right there, where, musically speaking, it all began for him.

Record Attendance at the Steinmühle Fall Festival

Events & Celebrations, Former Students & Alumni, News

The school and boarding school celebrated their 70th anniversary and introduced numerous new initiatives

During the weekend of its annual fall festival, Steinmühle had a second reason to celebrate: the 70th anniversary of the institution. Over the years, the family that owns the boarding school and the school association have transformed a site with old, dilapidated buildings surrounded by mud around a mill into a campus with new and completely renovated buildings, where students from the boarding school, high school, and the bilingual elementary school feel equally at home.

Numerous construction projects

Never before had so many visitors come to the Fall Festival on Steinmühlenweg. Never before had there been so many new things to marvel at. Following the completion of the new Forum and Learning Center 5/6 buildings, the Atrium—a new building for the middle school—was inaugurated earlier this year. Once that was finished, renovation of the main building began and was completed just in time for the start of the school year. The renovation of the cafeteria took place at the same time. This was accompanied by the redesign of the schoolyard, the completion of the parking lot, and the relocation of the bus turnaround loop in front of the school. A second, smaller schoolyard is now located in front of the Atrium.

Congratulations from the County Administrator

“These are the final projects for this year,” says Dirk Konnertz, executive director of the school association, with satisfaction and full of praise for the contractors. The collaboration between the school association, principals Björn Gemmer and Bernd Holly, and the boarding school’s governing body worked brilliantly and made these results possible in the first place. On Friday evening, Steinmühle celebrated its 70th anniversary with a small gathering featuring speeches and a festive dinner prepared by the boarding school kitchen. Guests of honor from the business and political worlds, including District Administrator Kirsten Fründt, congratulated the key players and the entire school community not only on what was on display but also on the ongoing successes evident in all areas of the school.

A Look Back at the Decades

In his speech, Egon Vaupel, chairman of the school association, highlighted the school’s tremendous progress since the association’s founding and emphasized the currently excellent collaboration between the school and the boarding school. Johanna Buurman-Rogalla, a witness to history who has lived in Steinmühle since the very beginning—for 70 years now— gave a detailed and vivid presentation, accompanied by many photographs, describing how Steinmühle has flourished and grown over the years, even though it was not spared the consequences of a fire and a flood.

Preserving Our Connection to Nature

Despite the absence of these hardships, and despite new construction and renovations, the Steinmühle campus today still bears many similarities to that era. Thanks in particular to its unspoiled, natural surroundings, the trees, and its location as a “small village on the outskirts of town,” the school and boarding school have been able to preserve their character. “That’s exactly what makes Steinmühle so unique—you won’t find anything like it anywhere else,” gushed a visitor to the Fall Festival. Adults and children alike took full advantage of the opportunity to stroll across the grounds at the Fall Festival on that sunny, warm Saturday before the start of fall, explore the buildings from the inside, visit the diverse booths set up by the Steinmühle students, and marvel at the experiments in the chemistry lab. “We’re overwhelmed by this atmosphere and the positive response,” summed up school principals Björn Gemmer and Bernd Holly at the alumni’s evening get-together, which didn’t end until late at night.

Steinmühle Boarding School Takes on Multiple Roles at the Fall Festival: In Charge of Catering, Actively Involved in Class Performances

Events & Celebrations, Former Students & Alumni, News

The boarding school students baked a total of 60 cakes for the annual big fall festival, which drew more visitors than ever before to the Steinmühlen campus on the Saturday before the break. How good it was to have made such thorough preparations! It wasn’t just the baked goods that were a hit on this sunny Saturday; the barbecue stand, with more serving stations than usual, also treated the many guests to a sumptuous feast. The boarding school handled the demands with flying colors: two bratwursts here, fries there— it went on nonstop well into the evening. There was also a lively crowd at the beer tent and in the wine tent. Here, too, the boarding school staff, supported by individual volunteers, kept things running smoothly.

With good organization

For the Steinmühle Boarding School, the Fall Festival is a crowd-pleaser every year—and comes with many challenges. It’s not just a matter of setting up the event and organizing food service for the numerous visitors. At the same time, the boarding school students are also participating in school projects with their class groups. That means juggling multiple tasks—for both students and teachers!

Lots of new things to marvel at

The fact that so many people came to Steinmühlenweg was clearly due to the fact that there was so much to see: the new building, the renovated main building, the redesigned schoolyard, and the cafeteria—which was almost unrecognizable. Parents, relatives, friends, and guests of Steinmühle gathered to get a firsthand look at what they had already heard about from their children. Stations featuring activities from all school grades were spread throughout the entire grounds and in individual rooms. Visitors completed a veritable obstacle course as they toured all the presentations and gladly accepted the invitation to take a guided tour of the new buildings.

Reminiscing

The Steinmühle Fall Festival is also a celebration for alumni, some of whom travel from far away to see “their” class again. “Do you remember…?” was a phrase heard in many corners. People shared memories and raised a glass or two. The younger students and current residents of the boarding houses also had plenty of fun. The dancing in the festival tent lasted well into the night.

Everything Under Control

Nevertheless, the next day, the boarding school students returned to the campus promptly at 10 a.m. to clean up, return the dishes, and take down the decorations, with the support of the teaching staff. And sure enough, the campus looked clean again in no time, as if the many visitors had never been there at all. The course of this traditional festival once again made it clear that work and celebration definitely go hand in hand. The feedback made it clear: Everyone had a great time at the Fall Festival!

Help That Makes a Difference: Fall Festival Fundraisers for the “Help for MiRO” Organization

Collaborations & Partnerships, Events & Celebrations, Former Students & Alumni, News, Social Engagement

Since 2010, Nadine Weigel, an editor at the Oberhessische Presse, has been supporting a children’s home in a suburb of Mombasa, Kenya. While conducting research for a feature story on various social projects, she came across the completely dilapidated orphanage during her trip to Africa. The journalist was confronted with dramatic scenes. Without hesitation, she decided to help right there on the spot.

What began as a spontaneous act of support that immediately saved a child’s life turned into long-term assistance. Together with several fellow activists, Nadine Weigel founded the nonprofit organization “Help for MiRO e.V.” in 2014, which she now leads as president.

Two groups of students from Steinmühle School found Nadine Weigel’s project so worthy of support that they decided to donate the proceeds from their fall festival activities to “Help for MiRO.”

Class 13d sold old geography maps that were laid out on the sports field. The maps are no longer needed, as map data is available online and displayed on screens.
The Interact Club, a Rotary-sponsored service club for children and young people, sold fruit cocktails to guests at the fall festival.

Total proceeds amounted to 625 euros, which Nadine Weigel gratefully accepted. The photo shows representatives from both groups, who were supervised by Principal Björn Gemmer. The “Interactors” can be recognized by their white polo shirts.

If you’re interested in learning more about the association’s work and its project, it’s worth taking a closer look at the website www.help-for-miro.de.

Funds from the “Steinmühle Foundation” set aside for the same purposes

Former Students & Alumni, News, Social Engagement

Decades ago, the “Stiftung Steinmühle e.V.” was founded with the purpose of supporting boarding school students who had difficulty paying their school fees and, above all, their boarding fees. In recent years, the activities of the “Stiftung Steinmühle e.V.” had ceased to be visible. Following the death of Chairman Thilo von Thümen, who was a student at Steinmühle from 1956 to 1965, the decision was made to dissolve the association. It was particularly the former Steinmühle students and members Axel Becker (pictured left) and Udo Graul (right) who spearheaded the dissolution of the association and ensured that the association’s remaining funds could now be transferred to the Steinmühle Marburg School Association (Schulverein Steinmühle Marburg e.V.). As part of the celebration marking Steinmühle’s 70th anniversary on September 20, the two members presented Principal Björn Gemmer (center) with a check for the remaining balance of 7,418 euros. In line with the goal of “Stiftung Steinmühle e.V.,” the funds will be used for scholarships and tuition reductions.

Mobile Chemikum Returns to the Steinmühle Fall Festival

Collaborations & Partnerships, Events & Celebrations, Former Students & Alumni, News, STEM

As it does every year, WU-Forschen is represented at the Fall Festival with a hands-on booth. This year, our students received support from the mobile Chemikum Marburg—just as they did in 2015. The Steinmühle Friends Association made this collaboration possible.
In addition to hands-on experiments with secret codes, alginates, dry ice, and much more, the Chemikum also demonstrated the popular “ball explosion” (photo).
There was a lot of interest at the booth. Younger children, especially those from the bilingual elementary school, were able to learn a lot and have fun here.

We are saying goodbye to five wonderful teachers

Former Students & Alumni, News

The last Thursday evening before summer break is traditionally not only the date of the “teachers’ barbecue.” It is also a time to say goodbye to colleagues who are leaving Steinmühle.

This summer, five teachers are saying goodbye to Steinmühle and beginning their retirement. They are Dr. Dietmar von der Ahe, Rosie Boebel, Wolfgang Reinert, Sigrid Stechmann, and Ulrike Wassum.

At the Steinmühle Forum, Principal Björn Gemmer paid tribute to the achievements of his colleagues and spoke in detail about their individual contributions over the years and decades. In doing so, he highlighted specific incidents that he either remembered particularly well or that were especially characteristic of the retiring staff members’ work.

Afterward, the stage belonged to the faculty associations to which the teachers belonged. Through humorous skits, the members took a close look at the characteristics, habits, and behaviors of the long-serving teachers and reflected on certain past events. Both the school administration and their colleagues managed, through their remarks, to use their words to take some of the wistfulness out of the evening.

Dirk Konnertz, executive director of the school association, used the farewell ceremony to thank Tanja Herfert for her four years of service as director of the Steinmühle youth welfare facility. The facility closed at the end of the school year.

After the many words of praise and reflection, it was only natural that both the honorees and the audience—consisting of the rest of the faculty—began to feel the need for cold drinks and grilled food. As is the case every year, everyone was then able to enjoy the food and refreshments while chatting in front of the Forum. Hardworking hands had set up beer tables and benches there. Sausages, steaks, salads, and the radiant evening sun ensured that the evening came to a pleasant culinary conclusion.

A small, fit group tackled the Marburg Night Marathon

Former Students & Alumni, News, Sports & Health

With the support of several new teachers and former students, a group of dedicated participants from Steinmühle took part in this year’s Night Marathon.

Due to the summer break, only a small number of participants gathered for the sporting event this time. In particular, no current students were available due to scheduling conflicts. However, the active participation of alumni from the classes of 2015 and 2016 demonstrated their traditional connection to the event. Steinmühle has now participated in the Marburg sports event for the seventh consecutive year, with initiator Dr. Andreas Heiske and Principal Björn Gemmer taking part every year. “Next year, we’re aiming for even greater participation. It’s essential that we keep this tradition alive,” they said in unison.

The group photo of the three classes shows (from left): Marcel Kalb (student teacher), Marc Bepperling (teaching assistant), Max Ritz (alumnus), Philipp Kreiter (alumnus), Adrian Hamel (alumnus), Malte Schweitzer (alumnus), Ines Vielhaben (teacher), Hannah Achenbach (teacher), Dr. Claudia Schmölz (chair of the parents’ council), Dr. Andreas Heiske (teacher). Missing from the photo are Laura Cubillas (teacher) and Björn Gemmer (principal).
