Fall Festival 2022

Events & Celebrations, Former Students & Alumni, Life at Boarding School, News

The Fall Festival: for the students of Steinmühle, a well-known and beloved celebration that has been held for decades. On this one day of the year, all former students of Steinmühle School and Boarding School are invited to reminisce and share what they’ve been up to since leaving. “Those were such wonderful times at the boarding school,” you hear people say from all corners.

On the last Saturday in September, the time had finally come: the Fall Festival was able to take place in its usual format. There hadn’t been such a large reunion of former Steinmühle students since 2019.

For weeks beforehand, the boarding school students had been preparing for this big event. Everything was planned down to the last detail, because there was still a lot to do behind the scenes. The students did a fantastic job organizing everything. They selected recipes, scheduled baking times, and supported one another. Working independently and with great enthusiasm, the students immersed themselves in their baking, resulting in the most amazing and delicious variety of cakes. Their goal was not simply to bake the same recipes over and over, but to offer as many different flavors as possible and to let their creativity run wild.

And so it came to pass that Bremerhaus, Stammhaus, Mühle, Hessenhaus, Westfalenhaus, and Biohaus baked nearly a hundred cakes.

Several students also volunteered to help set up. With their handyman skills, they worked diligently to build the huts. At the fall festival itself, the boarding school students had their own tasks: they sold cake, grilled food, and cleared away dishes. All boarding school students carried out these duties until 6 p.m. to ensure that all guests had a wonderful day. From 6:00 p.m. onward, however, everyone became a guest and celebrated the fall festival together. Former and current boarding school students met and exchanged stories about boarding school life then and now.

On Sunday afternoon, a few of us met up again in the dining hall at “SchniPoSa” and talked about what a great festival it had been. We’re already looking forward to the Fall Festival in 2023.

Boats christened, achievements celebrated: RuS wrapped up the school year

Events & Celebrations, News, Rowing, Sports & Health

The summer festival of the Rudern und Sport Steinmühle club came to a close with everyone—guests, parents, students, and organizers—in high spirits, and with a substantial amount of money raised for the club’s coffers. This casual get-together featuring barbecue and cold drinks at the end of each school year has already become a tradition. It has also become customary for attendees of the summer concert—which previously took place in the Forum—to wrap up the evening at the newly renovated Steinmühle boathouse.

“The celebration was a complete success,” summarized Björn Gemmer, principal of Steinmühlen School and vice president of the RuS club. He, along with the main organizer—rowing instructor and coach Martin “Stromi” Strohmenger—and chairman Dietrich Mägerlein, were delighted with the successful summer celebration and the christening of two boats, which was performed by the deputy chairman of the school association, Gerhard Müller, as well as by Claus Duncker. The boats are now named “Schorsch” and… “Claus”! — If that isn’t a good omen for what’s to come…!

Many other prominent figures from the Marburg area attended the official expansion of the boat fleet. Among those present were First District Deputy Marian Zachow, Marburg Mayor Nadine Bernshausen, City Councilwoman Kirsten Dinnebier, Björn Backes, head of the Sports Department for the University City of Marburg, and Andreas Bartsch, who, as Chairman of the Board of Sparkasse Marburg-Biedenkopf, has always been and remains closely connected to Steinmühle in the context of all construction projects. At the same time, senior staff members from Steinmühle also stopped by, including Thomas Hoffmann (Managing Director of the boarding school) and Anke Muszynski (Head of the boarding school), Dirk Konnertz (Managing Director of the Steinmühle School) and Headmaster Bernd Holly, as well as members of the Buurman family—the boarding school’s shareholders—teachers from Steinmühle, and anyone else we may have inadvertently omitted from this list. On the athletic front, the highlight was the presence of Marc Weber. The elite athlete and new addition to RuS Steinmühle had just recently won a medal at the World Rowing Cup in Lucerne. We’ll be hearing more from him—and from the entire club as well. There are plans here that are no longer just sitting on the back burner.

Farewells and Praise at the Summer Festival: “Applause for everyone who achieves the impossible”

Events & Celebrations, Former Students & Alumni, News

The faculty’s summer party, held on the last Thursday before summer break, is a roller coaster of emotions: a sigh of relief that everyone has made it through another year, but also a moment of reflection as teachers leave Steinmühle.

First of all, a big round of applause: The food at this event was once again absolutely delicious! One thing we can say right off the bat as a summary of this school year is this: Whenever the boarding school kitchen on campus provided the meals—it was fantastic!

Under these circumstances, the end of the school year got off to a splendid start. Although there was a touch of sadness as the farewells began. It was time to say goodbye to Johanna Zuschlag, who had helped out as a teacher for half a year and is now heading to Sweden. A heartfelt thank you went to Max Rubrecht, who—according to principals Björn Gemmer and Bernd Holly—“was not only reliable in his subjects of physical education and math, but could also be counted on for any task.” Those present said “Goodbye,” “Thank you very much,” and “Farewell” to Jolanta Hilbert after eight years on the Steinmühle cleaning team.

Charlotte Stroh’s colleagues expressed their hope that this would not be a permanent farewell. She teaches math and Spanish, and Spain will be her home for the next 12 months.

For Günter Eschenbrenner, who was unable to attend the farewell celebration for health reasons, his colleagues had prepared a special farewell ceremony. Led by Daniel Sans, those present sang a song for the Greek and Latin teacher—who also holds a teaching certification in ethics—and recorded it: “Gaudeamus igitur”! It was an original idea and a gesture through which everyone conveyed their best wishes for his recovery.

An exceptionally large number of warm farewell messages, tributes, and gifts were given to a teacher who, after 28 years and three months, is leaving Steinmühle to begin her retirement: Jeannine Walter. This multitalented language specialist—head of the Languages and Arts Department and a teacher of English, French, and Italian—was honored with praise and expressions of respect from the school administration and management, as well as from numerous colleagues: The mother of two, who once completed her teaching internship at Steinmühle with a grade of 1.0, had earned a reputation at Steinmühle as a fighter who always prioritized professionalism. “Respected and feared,” she tackled pedagogically challenging tasks and was regarded as demanding, extremely organized, energetic, and assertive. With a twinkle in their eyes, colleagues recounted Jeannine Walter’s nickname, “Master of the Raster”—everything had to be in a logical and understandable order at all times. Many said they had learned a great deal from Jeannine Walter and ultimately concluded that saying goodbye weighed heavily on their hearts, as today they had to bid farewell to a colleague who was not only capable but also very warm-hearted.

Jeannine Walter expressed her gratitude for the numerous gifts and the “fireworks of ideas that had been set off in her honor.” She said that at the Steinmühle, she had not only learned an incredible amount herself, but had also experienced a tremendous sense of camaraderie among her colleagues. Jeannine Walter: “Many friendships have developed that enrich my life.”

At the end of the evening, school director Dirk Konnertz thanked everyone present for an eventful year: “A round of applause for everyone who achieves the impossible.” Konnertz directed this message to the administrative office, to Till Buurman in his dual role as IT specialist and photographer, to Cornelia Oestreicher-Gold for “pulling off the Abitur,” and to Marcel Kalb, Lisa Ebinger, and Lothar Potthoff for their dedication to sports, particularly girls’ soccer. He also extended his thanks to the boarding school, specifically to Director Thomas Hoffmann for the fruitful collaboration. The final praise of the evening went to the head of lower secondary school, Frank Wemme: “A master of organization.”

Exercise and Socializing: New Sports Hall Officially Opened

Events & Celebrations, News, Sports & Health

It is the latest new building—for now—to open on the Steinmühle grounds following the construction of the Forum and Atrium, as well as the extensive renovation of the main building and the bistro: the new sports hall. Steinmühle celebrated this latest milestone in June with about 100 invited guests. Representatives from politics, partner institutions, supporters, and those involved in the construction project made their way to Steinmühle and raised their glasses together to a successful future.

The Steinmühle was built—but not just for itself. Unlike any other building on the grounds, the sports hall has been guided by the spirit of cooperation from the very beginning. Notable among these are the German Institute for the Blind (blista), as well as the Blau-Gelb Marburg sports club and other partner institutions, which can book time slots starting at 5:00 p.m. The gym is particularly well-suited for visitors with disabilities who require accessible facilities. In this way, the Steinmühle takes some of the strain off public buildings and offers new opportunities to people with disabilities.

“Physical activity is part of the concept of education,” said Egon Vaupel, chairman of the board of the Steinmühle e.V. School Association, who expressed his gratitude on site to everyone involved in the construction as well as to all supporters.

The City of Marburg and the State of Hesse each provided a grant of 300,000 euros. “We can accept these funds with confidence thanks to this exceptional win-win situation,” explains Dirk Konnertz, the school’s executive director. The Steinmühle’s own support association, chaired by Jasmine Weidenbach, financed the portable sports equipment with a contribution of 28,000 euros.

The celebration, to which school administrators, boarding school representatives, other members of the school association and the booster club, as well as the sports department, parent representatives, and student representatives were invited, took place in a positive atmosphere despite the gloomy weather. Given the plans for its use, the area in and around the spacious sports hall is likely to become a regular gathering place very soon—for exercise and socializing.

The festive spirit is back: Steinmühlen Spring Festival 2022!

Events & Celebrations, Life at Boarding School, News

A promise kept: Steinmühle celebrated the start of spring with a festival, marking the return of group activities after the COVID-19 restrictions, which had previously prevented events of this scale. People chatted and laughed together—the lively bustle in the Steinmühle courtyard was back! Organizer Frank Wemme said, “It was wonderful to hear the buzz of voices again and to see students of all ages gathering at the various booths. Everyone pitched in—from elementary school all the way up to 12th grade. It was a wonderful and lively day after a period that wasn’t always easy.”

Thanks to Frank Wemme, who planned the party down to the last detail and organized it perfectly!

Steinmühle once again celebrated the 2022 high school graduation in the festival tent

Contests & Awards, Events & Celebrations, News

The 2022 high school graduates were not always a homogeneous group. With their diverse personalities, they each had their own minds, their attitudes varied, and tolerance was required on all sides. Principal Björn Gemmer also emphasized this in his speech at the graduation ceremony in the festival tent, while at the same time announcing another fact: This group of young people achieved the best Steinmühlen high school graduation results to date.

“Nevertheless”? Or “therefore”? Was this a matter of causality or coincidence? The only thing that’s certain is that diversity among young characters isn’t really anything out of the ordinary. Even the children’s book author Andreas Steinhöfel, whom Gemmer quoted, presented such examples as a clear reality in his work *Rico, Oskar, and the Deep Shadows*, while the principal “didn’t want to look at anyone” and just smiled. In any case, Steinhöfel’s recommendation is to take children and adolescents seriously. Who, if not Steinmühle, offers the ideal setting for this? It has made it its mission to both enable the personal development of each individual and to achieve goals in everyday school life. Quite clearly, this is working out excellently.

Principal Bernd Holly introduced these contributions—which recounted the events and anecdotes that took place over the years during this eventful period—from the perspectives of teachers and students. But he did not do so without thanking everyone involved who, in a symbolic sense, keeps Steinmühle running: parents, students, the teaching staff, the non-teaching staff, and the boarding school.

There was an outpouring of emotion at the farewell celebration, which also spread among the guests who filled the festival tent on the Steinmühlen grounds. Following the successful high school graduation ceremony last summer, Steinmühlen Managing Director Dirk Konnertz had no trouble deciding to hold the prom on the school’s own grounds again, together with the students’ families.

The graduating seniors took a moment to look back on their first day of school on August 20, 2013, and smiled at the flyer from back then, which had been created especially for their “big day.” The young people extended their greetings and thanks to all the teachers, the administrative staff, in the dining hall and cafeteria, the cleaning team led by Erika Thiel, and especially to the teachers who had made their experiences unforgettable by organizing ski and rowing trips as well as the trip to Schuby.

Events & Celebrations, Life at Boarding School, News

The speeches have been given, and the farewell celebration has taken place. The class of 21/22 was bid farewell the weekend before last amid much joy, but also many tears.

At the traditional boarding school brunch held before the official graduation dance, a total of 16 graduating students were personally honored. Among other awards, Oscars were presented for “the greatest transformation” and for the “superhero” of the boarding school class. Each graduate received a personalized speech from the teaching staff.

Great Speeches for Great Personalities

These very special moments between the teaching staff and the students they mentor always stir up a lot of emotion. Parents, family members, and friends of the graduates were once again deeply moved by these encounters this year. “I’ve rarely heard so many fitting and beautiful words spoken about my daughter at the same time,” said one mother, visibly moved. “Choosing the Steinmühle back then was simply the best decision we could have made.”

Both boarding school director Anke Muszynski and the teachers heard this phrase repeatedly that morning. And by that morning at the latest, one thing becomes clear to all graduating students: Steinmühle is more than just a time spent in school. You remain a Steinmühle student forever. A Temporary Farewell—The Next Fall Festival Is Coming

“We’ll definitely see each other again!” That’s what the teachers and graduates promised each other. We want to thank you for the time we spent together at boarding school and wish you all the best for your future. Dear graduates, we’ll see you again at the Fall Festival!

Steinmühle Celebrates Its New Sports Hall!

Events & Celebrations, News, Sports & Health

Late yesterday afternoon, about 100 invited guests celebrated the opening of the new sports hall. Egon Vaupel, chairman of the board of the Steinmühle Marburg e.V. school association, welcomed and thanked everyone involved in the construction as well as all supporters; site manager Jochen Schröder provided the key facts about the project; and Claus Duncker, managing director of BLISTA, spoke about the long-standing and successful partnership between Steinmühle and BLISTA, and prominent political figures (City Councilwoman Kirsten Dinnebier, State Parliament Representative Dirk Bamberger, and District Deputy Klaus Weber) congratulated Steinmühle on the new gym.

The celebration finally came to a close in a relaxed atmosphere outdoors, with bratwurst and cold drinks, despite the rainy weather, and plenty of pleasant conversation. (A more detailed report will follow shortly.)

Christmas Party 2.0: The Very Special Steinmühlen Christmas Market

Events & Celebrations, News

The Christmas party at Steinmühle Boarding School—traditionally THE highlight of the year for the boarding school community. And to keep that sense of anticipation alive, the teaching staff has outdone itself in creativity for this year’s Christmas party: despite the pandemic, the teachers put together an extraordinary, relaxed, and cheerful Christmas market in the Mühlenhof.

Under the guidance of Nils Schwandt, students and teachers painstakingly built five Christmas stalls of their own by hand. “It was absolutely wonderful to see how enthusiastic the students were and how much dedication they put into this project. We couldn’t have done it without them,” says teacher Nils Schwandt happily.

The students helping out were also thrilled by the construction project: “It’s so much fun to make something ourselves. And knowing that we’re doing this for the Christmas party makes me really proud to say, ‘We made that!’” says student Julian Timm.

And so it came to pass that, despite the restrictions, another Christmas party full of fun, cheer, and togetherness was organized. And there really was something for everyone: Aside from the classics—sausages and fries or punch and mulled wine at the tea room run by Michel Hermens—the students could indulge themselves at the candy bar. “We really have everything!” says teacher Luisa Völker. “From crêpes to waffles, gingerbread, and cookies, to cotton candy and marshmallow treats—everything your heart desires.”

And for those who preferred something less sweet, there were activities and games to let off some steam. Guessing the teachers based on children’s drawings, decorating Christmas ornaments, making their own candles, or putting their skills to the test with a new round of “1, 2, or 3”—the students certainly didn’t get bored that evening. Teachers Ben Zriki and Francine Olschewski led the evening with great energy.

In addition, there were frequent performances by the students themselves: For example, the Biohaus put on an incredibly adorable performance set to a Bruno Mars song. While the youngest students danced and sang, the entire boarding school community swayed along with them. And, as is tradition, student Felix Müller sang Christmas carols for the group with his gifted voice, accompanied this year by Friederike on the violin.

But anyone who thinks that was the highlight of the festivities is mistaken. The outdoor party really got going when learning center director Patric Hahn fired up the karaoke machine. From then on, there was no stopping it: Everyone sang, laughed, and danced together well into the night.

“I was really skeptical and had actually planned to leave early because I had an important exam on Monday,” student Leon admits, “but then the evening turned out to be so much fun—I never would have thought! I just had to stay until the very end; it was so great!”

Wrapped up warmly in their coats, the boarding school community continued to celebrate together for hours. “We had considered holding the celebration in the dorms again due to COVID-19. But it was the right decision to move the party outdoors and celebrate together with everyone!” reports boarding school council member Verena happily. The boarding school council’s idea to organize its own raffle was also a huge hit. The absolute highlight among the prizes was the wet toilet paper, but the sweet surprises, hand warmers, and gift certificates were also celebrated by the winners.

Luke, a student who has been part of the boarding school community for years, even says, “That was the absolute best Christmas party ever!”

Necessity is the mother of invention—and here, the educational team has once again demonstrated how flexibly it can respond to any adversity. And the entire boarding school community provided hopeful proof that evening: Not even a pandemic can dampen our spirits or break our spirit of community. We live together, we celebrate together.

With that in mind, Steinmühle Boarding School wishes you a joyful holiday season and a healthy start to the new year!

The Future of Education After the Pandemic

Collaborations & Partnerships, Digitalization & AI, Events & Celebrations, News

The Boarding School Association (DIV) held its meeting at the Steinmühle with 135 participants

The Steinmühle School and Boarding School are linked in more ways than just their shared logo. The two institutions are financially separate but closely linked in their missions. Given this, it was only natural for Steinmühle School Principal Björn Gemmer—after a period of membership in “Die Internate Vereinigung” (DIV)—to take over as chair of the association this year. The “2021 Major Staff Conference of the Boarding Schools Association,” attended by representatives from all 16 member schools across Germany, was therefore held this year at Steinmühlenweg in Marburg.

Asking questions about our own daily lives, discussing them with speakers, and learning about our colleagues’ perspectives—the annual meetings aren’t just about patting each other on the back. Reflecting on the present, staying true to oneself, and gaining new inspiration—that was the goal of the 135 attendees this time, most of whom were educators. “We’re not competitors; either everyone is doing well or everyone is doing poorly,” was the sentiment expressed in summarizing past events. This time, the message was clear: All boarding schools are full.

The Importance of a Real Mentor

Whether on the North Sea coast or in the Alpine foothills, boarding schools have long struggled with image problems. They were seen as a “way out” for families—a place you end up if you’re not a good student or a well-behaved daughter. This image—unknown in England—has largely been overcome in Germany. The conference participants at the Steinmühle focused on solving other problems and addressing issues arising in the present: digitalization in schools, learning during and after the COVID-19 crisis, the importance of a real-life mentor, and the question of what asynchronous learning can or must look like.

The three-day conference featured presentations by experts and a panel discussion that, naturally, could not avoid addressing the interrelated topic of teacher education. Speaking as a local representative was Prof. Dr. Jürgen Handke, the “guru of digitalization” from Marburg, who, among other things, expressed the fear that after the pandemic, teaching would “fall back into the old rut” in which people had “made do with emergency solutions”: “We have neglected asynchronous knowledge transfer”; the way content is delivered must change, because simply providing assignments digitally is not enough in schools.

Prof. Dr. Martin Korte of the Technical University of Hannover focuses his research on the cellular basis of learning and memory. According to him, effective learning requires a school environment as well as a real mentor—even if, in the future, that mentor might find himself in the role of an advisor or learning coach.

Questioning Teacher Education

Another participant in the expert discussion was University Vice President Prof. Dr. Evelyn Korn, who is responsible for teacher education at Philipps University of Marburg. In her view, there is no single “right” way to conduct digital instruction, and so it is not part of teacher training to “hand out recipes” for it. Korn acknowledged that there is a difference between students’ physical presence and their digital presence: “For the first time, students knew more than their instructors. It undoubtedly changes the learning process.”

Prof. Dr. Klaus Zierer of the University of Augsburg, a full professor of school pedagogy, emphasized yet another approach. He called for a reevaluation of teacher training: “We need to address this differently; a lot is going wrong here.” Unlike in some other countries, he noted, the public perception of the teaching profession in Germany is not favorable, which in turn is one of the causes of a glaring shortage of teachers. “We need to find a way to inspire students to pursue a career in teaching again.”

Shortly after the event, Björn Gemmer, the conference director and organizer, received feedback on how the individual participants had personally benefited from attending the DIV conference in Marburg:

“Having just arrived home, I would like to once again express my sincere thanks for the invitation to the lecture. I thoroughly enjoyed it—it’s rare to experience so much educational ethos all in one place. Great!” (Prof. Dr. Klaus Zierer, Full Professor of School Pedagogy, University of Augsburg)

“I would like to express my gratitude for the excellent organization of my presentation and the panel discussion featuring myself and the other speakers. In my view, it was a truly successful event, and listening to Mr. Zierer was an experience in itself! I am deeply impressed by what the Boarding School Association has put together here!” (Prof. Dr. Martin Korte, Technical University of Braunschweig)

“On behalf of my wife as well, thank you once again for the opportunity to be part of your wonderful conference and to enjoy the various additional amenities. I am glad that my ideas and initiatives have fallen on such fertile ground, and you can be sure that I will hold up the high schools and boarding schools that were present at the DIV conference as exemplary and mention them in the future. A first workshop has already been scheduled at Louisenlund (with Dr. Rösner), where I would like to prepare students, teachers, and parent representatives for digital teaching through several hands-on workshops. I can well imagine that other schools and boarding schools would also like to take advantage of this offer, and I am open to establishing such contacts. In any case, we should stay in touch to continue strengthening the pioneering path your schools and boarding schools are taking.” (Prof. Dr. Juergen Handke, University of Marburg & 3M Solutions, RoboPraX – Robotikum)

“Now that we’ve returned safely to the Ammersee, I’d like to take a moment to once again express my heartfelt thanks for the excellent planning and execution of the conference. Our staff were absolutely thrilled and have already shared this with the rest of the faculty during our Monday meeting today. That’s exactly how it should be. An outstanding start for future events. I can well understand what it takes to organize such an event at the beginning of the school year. So, hats off to you! By the way, I’ll soon be meeting with colleagues from Neubeuern and Stein for one of our tried-and-true (Bavarian) exchange meetings. If desired, I’d be happy to beat the DIV drum once again there.” (Rüdiger Häusler, Foundation Director, Landheim Ammersee)

“Thank you so much for this absolutely wonderful conference, your fabulous organization, the fascinating topics, the delicious food, and especially for your comforting words right at the start: I took that literally and actually took a little ‘vacation’—I was able to unwind, even found time to explore the wonderful old town a bit, light a candle for my grandpa at St. Elizabeth’s Church, and just pause for a moment amid the constant hustle and bustle—which I actually really enjoy! The gathering and conference were so important—and how wonderful that we were finally able to see each other again and exchange ideas. And thank you for making Marburg a permanent fixture on my mental map from now on: a great city, but above all, a fantastic, innovative, and incredibly well-equipped school—thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you for your energy and time, for your perseverance and resilience in complicated times: that was exactly what was needed, and I’m very much looking forward to our continued collaboration and all the upcoming events and activities.” (Katja Maike Braun, Principal, Executive Board of the Ecole d’Humanité)

“After a tiring but incredibly varied, informative, and superbly organized weekend, I would like to express my sincere thanks—also on behalf of my colleagues—for the warm welcome we received at the Steinmühle Boarding School. The impressions we gained of the DIV, its member boarding schools, and especially Steinmühle Boarding School were so consistently positive and rewarding that we know it is definitely worth further strengthening our collaboration, and the three of us, as ambassadors in Roßleben, will always be happy to share the spirit of the DIV. We look forward to the invitations to the working groups and hope you’ll find some time to relax after what were surely exciting days for you as well.” (Yvonne Sonnenfeld, Roßleben Foundation Administration)

“I really enjoyed the weekend at Steinmühle! Delicious food, interesting presentations, a great atmosphere, nice people, and excellent organization—thank you so much to you and your team!!!” (Maik Lüdemann, Business Director at Marienau School)
