Easter Break at Boarding School: Relaxation, Learning, and Fun

Life at Boarding School, News

In March, the COVID-19 pandemic brought massive disruptions to our personal, academic, and social lives and required great sacrifices from all of us. As the Easter break approached, the boarding school was therefore committed to offering the children a restful and carefree vacation and, in doing so, providing some relief to their parents. And so, the boarding school students were given the opportunity to spend the entire Easter break on the Steinmühle grounds—under the constant supervision of the on-site educational team, safe and secure with no contact with the outside world, enjoying a wide range of recreational activities on the spacious campus, homeschooling, and special projects.

Take some time to focus on your personal interests

In addition to the daily recreational activities and support with homework while working from home, the opening of special project rooms was primarily intended to allow students to pursue personal interests that often take a back seat during the regular school year, or to broaden their horizons beyond the classroom.

The students interested in technology took their first steps in programming by working with the Arduino microcontroller and taking online courses on artificial intelligence offered by the University of Helsinki. This is a skill that is already in high demand today, but will be particularly sought after in future societies.

Learn a Foreign Language or Become an Office Pro

There were also extensive opportunities for anyone who wanted to develop their practical everyday skills. The program included learning another foreign language, as well as professional training in all Office applications and improving touch-typing skills. Our high school graduates in particular—who, despite all the challenges, had taken their written exams in a nearly heroic manner before the break and most of whom will be heading to college—showed great interest and dedication in these programs.

All athletes had the opportunity to train for the German Sports Badge, hone their basketball skills under the guidance of a basketball player, earn their C-level fitness trainer certification, or take a closer look at currently very popular fitness apps to assess their user-friendliness.

Anyone who wanted to hit the dance floor was in the right place in the boarding school’s mirror hall. Under the guidance of Timo, one of our 12th graders, students learned the rhythms of disco fox and cha-cha-cha, as well as the elegance of the tango, so they can cut a fine figure on any dance floor in the future.

My Own Creations on the Sewing Machine

Creative talents should also be given the freedom to flourish. In a hand-lettering class, the young people were able to practice their calligraphic skills and learn “the art of beautiful writing.” With Easter just around the corner, it was the perfect opportunity to send greeting cards and Easter wishes.

Upcycling projects—the processing and reuse of waste materials—have been very popular for years, especially when it comes to creating new furniture from old pallets. So, some students at the Westfalenhaus “armed” themselves with pencils, hammers, and paintbrushes to enhance the garden for the coming summer with a garden lounge, where future students will also be able to enjoy Marburg’s sunny days.

In addition, thanks to the active support of Corinna, one of our housekeepers, the boys and girls were able to showcase their talent at the sewing machine. Old clothes were transformed into new, original creations, and by sewing face masks, they rose to the challenge of the current situation.

Easter Break at Steinmühle: Perhaps the most enjoyable way to comply with stay-at-home orders…

Steinmühle Boarding School: A Safe and Reliable Home, Even in Times of Crisis

Life at Boarding School, News
Idyllic natural surroundings at the Steinmühle boarding school and nature camp in Marburg, Hesse, for students with behavioral challenges and gifted students

Even during the COVID-19 crisis, Steinmühle Boarding School remains a safe and reliable home for every boarding student. In compliance with the currently applicable general hygiene regulations, all residents have the opportunity to move about freely on the spacious boarding school grounds. This ensures that students can spend time close to nature in the fresh air and engage in individual physical activities.

To ensure the safety of all students and teaching staff, students are currently not permitted to leave the Steinmühle campus.

Since the state of Hesse suspended compulsory schooling, all students at Steinmühle have been participating in homeschooling. Steinmühle immediately implemented the necessary technical measures to facilitate this. The teachers provide as much support as possible to boarding students during homeschooling whenever questions arise regarding their assignments.

Winter Teepee Camp

2020 Winter Teepee Camp

There was no snow, but everyone was in high spirits

This year, too, a total of 10 students and two educators set out to answer the call of the wild and set up their winter teepee camp in the wooded area of the “Zum Oertzwinkel” campground in Kreutzen near Münster. Even though this year’s winter camp had to make do without winter, the conditions still held their own charm for the campers. Bright sunshine, cool and clear nights, and pleasant temperatures provided the perfect setting and kept everyone in good spirits.

A Unique Atmosphere

While shooting with a bow and arrow during the day gave participants a glimpse of what life in the wild must have been like back then, the evening brought a unique and incomparable atmosphere as the campfire was lit— without which no real winter camping trip would be complete and which is what makes the experience of nature truly authentic. In the steady glow of the flames and accompanied by the crackling of the embers, we sang, cooked, ate, and—above all—laughed a lot with old friends and new acquaintances.

“Sturmfrei” with a Twist

On Sunday, our adventurers also demonstrated perfect timing. Just as they had stowed away their belongings and were ready to head home, Storm “Sabine” began whistling through the treetops at the campground. When we arrived home, exhausted but happy, and learned that we’d have the day off on Monday because “Sabine” had “blown” the classes off the schedule, an unforgettable weekend came to a perfect end.

The “Bad Taste” Badminton Tournament Kicks Off a Year Full of Boarding School Activities

Life at Boarding School, News, Sports & Health

For the 2019–2020 school year, the Boarding School Council has set some goals for the boarding school community: Throughout the year, activities for the entire Steinmühlen community will take place on boarding school weekends.

The Bad-Taste badminton tournament, which took place for the second time at Steinmühle Boarding School this weekend, kicked off the recreational program. The teams were drawn by lot in advance to ensure the fairest possible competition and some wild (costume) combinations.

From 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., the Steinmühlen students and teachers, dressed in wild costumes, fought fiercely for first through third place. In the eight groups, students battled it out in the preliminary rounds amid loud cheering in the gym to advance to the finals.

In the end, Martin Treml from the Bremerhaus, together with his teammate and house director Francine Olschewski, prevailed in the final match against young Elizabeth Förster from the Biohaus and Michel Hermens, the director of the Mühlenhaus. Students Yuhe Lin and Maxim Dyck took third place.

Since the tournament’s theme was “Bad Taste,” prizes were of course awarded accordingly: Johannes Tetzner won with his outfit consisting of sunglasses, a stuffed animal tied around his waist, a bicycle helmet worn upside down, and colorful socks (all of which he wore consistently even during the games), a Steinmühlen sweater—just like Felix Müller, who strolled around the hall dressed as an archery-shooting cowboy butcher.

However, to ensure that everyone had a chance to win a prize, additional participant prizes were drawn at the end: One team was delighted to learn that they wouldn’t have to attend any extracurricular activities for the coming week, while another team will have their entire menu request fulfilled for Wednesday’s dinner night. And the third team drawn in the raffle gets to take it easy at school: they won’t have to go to the study hall for a whole week.

And the boarding school council is already planning its next event: Takeshi’s Castle, the well-known Japanese game show in which contestants had to navigate funny—and sometimes insurmountable—obstacles. This real-life version of a platformer video game is now set to be brought back to life in the gym at Steinmühle Boarding School.

The boarding school community enjoys one last taste of summer

Life at Boarding School, News

The boarding school weekend gives each house the opportunity to organize its own activities and invites students to take advantage of various offerings

When the weather is nice, as it has been in recent weeks, students can really make the most of all the outdoor activities offered at Steinmühle Boarding School during their free time. Especially during the house evenings on Friday of every boarding school weekend, there are opportunities for great activities in the fresh air. During these house evenings, each residential group plans its own group activity. This helps the group grow even closer together, which fosters and strengthens the house community.

The Biohaus is home to the youngest students at the boarding school. The students in grades 5–7 took advantage of the beautiful weather to enjoy a barbecue evening followed by plenty of swimming fun in the Lahn River. Afterward, the young people tried their hand at stand-up paddleboarding and explored the Lahn River in one of the boarding school’s canoes. To wrap up the day, the residential group gatheredaround a campfire and enjoyed some homemade bread on a stick.

The Westfalenhaus hosted a barbecue in the garden. Hussam, in particular, was very involved and had taken charge of the preparations. There were authentic kebab skewers and a traditional salad with couscous. All of this created a cozy setting for celebrating Luise and Zhirui’s birthday around the campfire in the Westfalenhaus’s idyllic garden. “Grill ’n’ Chill” would be a fitting title to describe the activities of the Westfalenhaus residents. Just like many house groups before them , they, too, were drawn to the popular game “Werwolf,” which kept them entertained until it was time to turn in for the night.

At the Bremerhaus, the plan was to eat pizza in the evening sun under the trees on the school grounds. We had actually planned a cozy DVD night, but the weather was much too nice. So the residential group let off steam on the playground until night fell. This way, their energy was channeled into physical activity, and the evening ended with the teens exhausted but still relaxed. The main house hadn’t taken the “house evening” quite so literally. Thanks to the nice weather, the group began their activities as early as the afternoon at Lake Niederweimar—a recreational oasis near the Steinmühle. In the evening, the young people enjoyed delicious barbecue food and refreshing drinks on the boarding school grounds.

A Wide Range of Activities for the Rest of the Weekend

Every boarding school weekend, the educational team at Steinmühle Boarding School offers activities for the students on Saturdays and Sundays. They make sure to provide as wide a range of activities as possible: “We want to provide a break from the demands of everyday school life, get the students out of their rooms, and spend time with them,” the team explains. This allows the young people to truly experience the weekend as leisure time and recharge their energy for the upcoming school week.

On Saturday, Helmut Heilig organized activities at Lake Weimar starting at 1 p.m. The participants set off by bike for the Aqua Fun & Fitness Park there.

Starting at 1:30 p.m., our colleague Christian Schäfer visited the exhibition “Seeing People’s Hardship” at the University Church with a group of interested students. The exhibition features a selection of portrait drawings by Kurt Reuber from the Stalingrad Pocket in 1941–42. The portraits had been delivered by the last pilot to escape the encirclement and were thus preserved. They depict somber faces in which one can almost feel the distress and worry. Kurt Reuber himself had remained in Russia.

Students Luca and Hussam led a soccer practice starting at 2:00 p.m. Participants had the opportunity to learn techniques and tactics. They offered this as an additional skills training session to supplement the regular after-school club that takes place during the week.

Starting at 5 p.m., the popular bouldering session took place, once again led by Christian Schäfer. At 7 p.m., Anke Muszynski hosted an audio theater event featuring the play “The Sandman.” At 7:30 p.m., the long “High School Musical” night began with Francine Olschewski.

The Sunday program included a visit to the Celtic World with Nils Zeller at 1:00 p.m. There, at the foot of the Glauberg, the group toured the Celtic World and looked the mythical Celtic prince in the face. Of course, the excursion also included information about the living conditions of people back then: How did they live? What was a typical day like? What did they eat? To wrap things up, the students climbed the burial mound and ended the excursion with an ice cream.

But that wasn’t all. Another highlight of the weekend was the opportunity to learn the basics of canoeing on and along the Lahn River. Christian Schäfer offered a crash course and gave a brief introduction to paddling a Canadian canoe. Afterward, every participant knew how basic paddling strokes work and how to paddle in a straight line—an essential skill. They even played some games in the boats, despite the risk of falling into the water.

The afternoon continued with Francine Olschewski’s show jumping workshop, which began at 4:00 p.m. Several students at the Steinmühle boarding school have already developed a passion for this sport, and their numbers seem to be growing.

“Anyone up for starting a band?” was the question when the topic turned to making music at Bina. Initial interest was gauged to see if anyone was up for starting a Steinmühlen boarding school band. The last activity of the day, at 5 p.m., was organized by Philipp Dönges. He invited everyone to play Spikeball. This gave even those who had previously preferred the non-athletic activities a chance to burn off some energy.

To wrap up the weekend, the students gathered with the teaching staff in the gym to kick off the evening with a relaxed game of dodgeball. Having let off some steam and recharged, both the students and the teachers were now ready to start the new week.

Building a Community: The Field Trips Organized by Steinmühle Boarding School

Class Trips, Field Trips, and School Outings, Life at Boarding School, News

The Steinmühle boarding school community got off to a great start in the new 2019/2020 school year: The first week of school went well, and now it’s finally time for the house trips.

The first boarding school weekend of the school year is traditionally dedicated to building community and fostering teamwork within the house groups. It’s simply a matter of stepping off campus on purpose to get to know the new residential community better in a small group setting. Each residential team finds a suitable location for its students to participate in activities together that help transform a group of people—some of whom are still strangers to one another—into a cohesive residential community. During this weekend, academic pressure is deliberately set aside, with the focus instead on the joy of being together.

And so, last weekend, the six separate residential groups set out on short trips to various destinations across Germany.

A Wild Roller-Coaster Ride with the Biohaus at Europa-Park in Rust

The Biohaus organized an adventure-filled weekend at Europa-Park in Rust for the boarding school’s youngest students. On the border with France, the residential group camped right outside the park’s gates with a view of the various attractions. The students were already looking forward to the weekend on the day they arrived, enjoying a barbecue with a panoramic view of the park. On Saturday, the big day finally arrived: With perfect weather, they made the most of the roller coasters and shows, and in the evening, they wrapped up their action-packed day with a relaxing meal at a restaurant.

Ladies in Schöningen: Hessenhaus Takes a Stroll Through the City Galerie

The residential group, now under new educational leadership, settled in comfortably in Schöningen, on the border with Saxony-Anhalt. The newly formed Hessenhaus is once again an all-girls residential group this school year. What could have been better than a weekend of shopping at the City Galerie in Wolfsburg, followed by pizza and a movie to round off the weekend together?

Culture and Leisure: Mühle Enjoys Heidelberg’s Rich Cultural Heritage

The residents of the Mühle first enjoyed the beautiful view from Heidelberg Castle of the sunny Neckar Valley before strolling together through the streets of the Old Town and shopping to their hearts’ content. And to make sure the boys from the Mühle were thoroughly exhausted after such a weekend, they headed back to the Miramar swimming pool on Sunday. Every slide fan got their fill here: the Hurricane Loop and the Typhoon Slide gave the Mühle boys one last serious adrenaline rush before they headed back to the boarding school grounds.

The Steinmühle’s roller-coaster ride continues: Its flagship location at Phantasialand

The main group had a blast at Phantasialand near Cologne in perfect weather and threw themselves into the thrilling rides. After all the thrills and excitement of the day, the group relaxed at the campground at Rhine kilometer 681. Barbecuing right on the picturesque banks of the Rhine, students and teachers alike were able to enjoy the weekend as the sun set.

Ammersee and Andechs Abbey for the Westfalenhaus

When boarding schools support and cooperate with one another, something wonderful can happen: Landheim Schondorf gave the nearly 30 students and teachers from Westfalenhaus the opportunity to stay overnight free of charge in the beautiful facilities of the Upper Bavarian boarding school. As a result, the soon-to-be high school graduates from Steinmühle were able to spend a lovely weekend on Lake Ammersee and enjoy a cozy dinner and drinks in the evenings at Andechs Abbey.

Team-Building on a Raft at the Bremerhaus

The Bremerhaus, a brand-new residential group under new educational leadership, came together for the raft-building project at the Vingst outdoor natural swimming pool in Cologne. While the group had fought fiercely during the day to build the best—and above all, the most stable—raft, by evening all rivalries were forgotten: And so, during a cozy barbecue at the Germania Rowing Club’s facility in Düsseldorf, they laughed late into the night over the most spectacular (water) stories in the best Rhineland tradition.

Steinmühle Boarding School: A Gentle Start in a New Environment

Life at Boarding School, News, Uncategorized

“We’re both named Nils. But…you’ll figure it out.” With a wink, boarding school director Nils Schwandt welcomes a new boarding student on Sunday afternoon. The teenager grins mischievously, now knowing that Nils Schwandt and his colleague Nils Zeller are the house directors of the main dormitory. He’ll be moving into his room there shortly. It will be his home for the school year, which begins the next day. The other new arrivals are doing the same: getting their bearings in their new living and learning environment. They come from Munich, Jena, but also from South Korea and China. The Steinmühle boarding school currently has 79 children and teenagers and is thus continuing to expand. Exactly one year ago, the Biohaus on the Steinmühle campus was inaugurated as an additional residence for boarding students.

Additional Housing: The Bremerhaus

Recently, the Bremerhaus has also become housing for boarding school students. The group of unaccompanied minor refugees in this building was disbanded at the end of the school year; three of the refugees continue to live in the boarding school and are now preparing for their Abitur exams. “An example of successful integration,” says Francine Olschewski. The dorm director—like “Nils & Nils”—is a long-standing member of the teaching staff. “Some staff members are new to the faculty,” she says, adding, “We’ve restructured.”

A New Chapter in Life

Boarding school director Anke Muszynski fulfills the final individual requests of the new arrivals. Something is still missing here; something else needs to be taken care of there. For this dedicated and energetic educator, who dashes back and forth attentively, “service” is more than just a word.

In a few words, without any long-winded speeches, Anke Muszynski introduces the teaching staff to the new students and their parents. Some students are accompanied by their grandparents as well. It’s quite a big step for these young people to send their loved ones home alone shortly afterward. The atmosphere in the dining hall, with coffee, cake, and fruit, is relaxed and not at all wistful. Parents strike up conversations with other parents at the round tables. A new chapter in life is beginning—for everyone! So everyone is a little excited, “including us,” says Francine Olschewski. But she also knows: “Later, that is, tonight, everything will be just as usual.”

Getting to Know Each Other

The next morning is “business as usual.” That’s when classes begin, with students heading to the renovated main building or the newly constructed atrium. The upcoming weekend will be all about the so-called “ house trips.” The individual residential groups will go on outings to get to know each other better.

The main campus, for example—the group centered around “Nils & Nils”—is heading to Cologne. As part of this trip, they’ll also visit Phantasialand. But there won’t be any boredom later on at the Steinmühlen campus either. A wide variety of sports activities and the natural surroundings offer entertainment and learning in a comfortable atmosphere.

Defining Madness and the Depths of Boarding School Life

Life at Boarding School, News

Who actually decided what’s normal? The 11th-grade “Drama” class explored this question in depth with their production “The Perfectly Normal Madness.” As part of what’s known as a “scene collage,” the students brought various theatrical techniques to the stage: expression through movement, rhythm, voice, and props. Visitors learned that much of this depends on the perspective of the audience. It all comes down to what the viewers and listeners make of the messages conveyed.

The DS-Kurs 12 class presented the play *Dead Poets Society*, deliberately exaggerating the routines of a staunchly conservative boarding school and the unconditional support it receives—precisely for that reason—from some traditional parents. Discipline and self-expression are presented here as seemingly irreconcilable opposites; a student’s suicide is attributed to the unconventional teaching methods of a single teacher—because that’s easier than questioning oneself as a parent or the boarding school itself. – A wonderful evening with consistently excellent acting throughout.

Family Day at Steinmühle Boarding School

Events & Celebrations, Former Students & Alumni, Life at Boarding School, News

The weather was on our side for the annual Family Day at Steinmühle Boarding School. The families of all boarding school students were invited to spend a few pleasant hours together in a relaxed atmosphere. A variety of activities kept everyone entertained: from canoeing on the Lahn to finger painting for young visitors, bull riding, and bubble balls, all the way to box climbing—everyone had a great time while the sun shone brightly. The day concluded with a barbecue buffet, where the chefs showcased their skills.

This traditional event focuses on general interaction. For parents and families, the gathering always offers an opportunity to get to know one another and network.

Hiking, Dresden, Canoe Trip, and More: Experiential Education Weekend

Class Trips, Field Trips, and School Outings, Life at Boarding School, News

Traditionally, Steinmühle Boarding School sets out on its experiential education trips in May. Students can choose from a variety of trips, which are selected and organized by the teachers. The groups left Steinmühle last Friday after lunch and returned to the boarding school on Sunday evening. They then immediately began sharing their experiences.

Hiking in the Thuringian Forest

The group’s destination was a self-catering vacation rental in Großbreitenbach where they would cook together. During their stay, the team went on a hike of about 20 kilometers along the Thuringian Forest High Trail to the highest point of the Rennsteig, the 948-meter-high Schneekopf. There, they took a break to enjoy the magnificent view.

The students enjoyed the scenery during the day and spent the evening doing activities together. Finally, there was one more highlight: On Sunday, the group headed to the Avenida Therme in Hohenfelden near Erfurt before heading back toward Marburg.

Climbing in Franconia

A team of nine went climbing in Franconian Switzerland near Morschreuth. The plan was to camp on the meadow of the “Zur guten Einkehr” inn. For some, it was their first time climbing on rock; for others, it was a chance to build on what they already knew. From rappelling to lead climbing to top-roping, there was something for everyone. For Leon, this was his first time lead climbing and, at the same time, his first time belaying. Jaques overcame his fear of heights, began to trust himself, and really started to enjoy the activity.

That also applied to activities that were simply about hanging out in the air, getting a taste of the mountain air and a little adrenaline—just letting yourself go. Of course, the delicious dinner was part of it. First at the inn, then off the grill on Saturday evening. In the mornings, we had a sumptuous breakfast. Everyone always pitched in and helped take care of the group.

For the group’s lead climbers in particular, the event was another highlight. It offered new experiences for everyone. The Steinmühle Boarding School would like to thank the Marburg Climbing Gym for lending them the climbing shoes.

Trip to Dresden

The participants checked into the A&O Hostel. Dinner was already a lot of fun: at the Roller Coaster Restaurant, each main course came hurtling in on a “weightless sparkler express.”

On Saturday, the group took a trip to Saxon Switzerland. They visited Bad Rathen with its Elbe Sandstone Mountains, hiked the Rauenstein ridge trail with views of the Elbe, and explored the Bastei, including the Gorge Trail with the “Schwedenlöcher,” passing by Amselsee.
A special city tour was on the agenda for Sunday. The route: Neumarkt with the Frauenkirche, the Semper Opera House, the Zwinger, the Royal Palace, Brühl’s Terrace, the Procession of the Princes, the Stallhof, the Catholic Court Church, the Taschenberg Palace, the Augustus Bridge, and a visit to the Frauenkirche. The verdict: Lots of history, lots of culture—and lots of fun.

Canoe Tour

The canoe trip began at our base camp, the Ederblick Campground near Bad Wildungen, where we set up our tents. The plan was to paddle down the Eder River past the dam and into the Fulda River. After a strenuous day in the canoes, the evening wrapped up with a campfire, a barbecue, and some light-hearted games. A total of 14 children, accompanied by three counselors, set out on the canoe trip.

Camping at Lake Eder

Camping on a meadow by Lake Eder was the ultimate outdoor experience: no running water, no electricity, and no restroom facilities.
